Hi all!<\/p>\n

This week, I am posting the first update a good bit earlier than most week. This is because I already have a lot of events for the weekend in there AND because there are two big events that start already from 09:00 on Saturday, although you can still arrive later in the day: The UCD Festival (tickets still available) and the Coderdojo Coolest Projects Awards.<\/p>\n

In addition Saturday is the good weather day this weekend, so I better equip you with a list of things to do. Sunday looks wet and grey if my forecast is right.<\/p>\n

But despite my hard work, I didn’t get ALL events in. So I will update them throughout the morning (and early afternoon) on Saturday and will send the final mail out when all is included. The updates throughout the day will happen on the website and in the smart phone app.<\/p>\n

This is the FINAL version and 28 (!) events were added to the preliminary version posted online this morning.<\/p>\n

Super helpful donors last week, so the required amount before the end of the month went down to to EUR 60. Thanks for all the help! Can YOU also help?<\/a><\/p>\n

Car Sharing – A new company is entering the market<\/h2>\n
\n

For a long time GoCar<\/a> was the only Car Sharing initiative in Ireland. It is a great service for people that only sometimes need access to a car and we all have seen the white Go Cars with the green writing on it. GoCar already launched back in 2010 and they have hundreds of cars on the street. A great service!<\/p>\n

But things move on and while GoCar currently still says “Ireland’s Only Car Sharing Company” in their tag line on the website, this has changed now.<\/p>\n

Toyota Ireland has announced the launch of their Yuko Car Sharing club. At the moment, they will only have three bases and 15 cars (all hybrid cars!), so they are still far behind GoCar, but it is just the start for the YUKO Car Club. Pets of celebrities including rugby hero Gordon D\u2019Arcy, TV star Glenda Gilson, healthy food fanatic Roz Purcell and singer Mary Byrne, feature in \u2018Petography: The Secret Life of Pets Exhibition\u2019, an exhibition that captures pets getting up to mischief while their famous owners aren\u2019t around.<\/p>\n

The pets of celebrities including Rosanna Davison, Holly Carpenter, Kathryn Thomas, Mark Cagney, Cathal Penred, Gillian Quinn, Aoibheann McCaul, Dr Eva Osmond, Pete Wedderburn and PJ Gallagher also feature in the exhibition.<\/p>\n

The exhibition has been created by the team from Universal Pictures Ireland to celebrate the release of The Secret Life of Pets, which hits Irish cinemas on June 24th.<\/p>\n

The free exhibition is has been organised in conjunction with the animal charity ISPCA. The pictures that feature in Petography will be auctioned in aid of the ISPCA when the exhibition closes. The exhibition “Seditious Types – Legacy of the Printers of 1916” will explore the role of printers active in 1916 and the central role of printed media in shaping the image and meaning of the Easter Rising.<\/p>\n

Politics and the print industry had a complex relationship in 1916 Ireland. As a commercial sector the print industry produced vast amounts of stationary and advertising for the main political parties and the British administration. This often resulted in material from varying political points of view being produced in the same printing shops. However, a number of print shops were associated with the Gaelic League and the nationalist literary movement. This group of printers actively published works which would not have been printed by the mainstream printers of the time, including works by Yeats, Synge and O’Casey. In recognition of the power of print to inform and win public opinion, a nationalist print counter-culture existed in the form of journals, pamphlets and books. This \u2018mosquito press\u2019 circulated mainly in Dublin among radical political activists. In the case of the more seditious groups and individuals, small printing presses were often established in secret locations. By 1916 many of the key political activists were printers, compositors and editors.<\/p>\n

Fifty Printmakers from eight printmaking studios around Ireland were invited by The Leinster Printmaking Studio, Clane, Co. Kildare to create \u2018little prints\u2019 on \u2018little known events or incidents\u2019 during or around the time of the 1916 Rising and the exhibition will tour the Dublin Libraries in 2016.<\/p>\n

Each library displaying the exhibition will host a workshop in basic printmaking. Participants will be invited to illustrate an incident\/artefact of their choice. A small selection of the resulting work may be added to the website and may be included in the display in the library. The Coderdojo is a unique pan-European initiative that was esstablished on a voluntary basis by industry professionals to support and inspire a generation of innovators, creators and entrepreneurs aged from 7 to 17.<\/p>\n

This awards event creates a platform for young people to develop a broad set of digital abilities by offering them the opportunity to showcase the skills they have learned at CoderDojo.<\/p>\n

The event runs from 09:00-18:00 with the awards ceremony as the crowning segment in the afternoon from 16:30. The full schedule is here<\/a>. During the day a large amount of speakers will give interesting talks that are related to Coding, Internet and Start-ups.<\/p>\n

Admission to the event is free, but tickets are required via the website here<\/a> for all that have not entered a project (i.e. family members, guests and supporters). I am not sure, however, if tickets are still available on SAturday during the day, but it is worth checking.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

On Saturday 18 June, UCD will host the first ever UCD Festival. Events will take place across Belfield and visitors will experience a large variety of talks and exhibitions, theatrical performances, live music, interactive workshops and family entertainment.<\/p>\n

There will be something for everyone, including discussions with well known alumni (e.g. Miriam O’Callaghan and Jarlath Regan), family activities, a 5km run, food fairs and much more.<\/p>\n

Please note: There might be a conflict with the Family Fun Day at Ballaley Park, organised by the same person also for the Dun Laoghaire Biodiversity event schedule on the same day and at the same time according to the Dun Laoghaire events website. But the good news is that at least one of the two should take place.<\/p>\n

Armed with bug jars and nets you will be heading off into the park, in search of six-legged creatures. Learn lots about insects at this nature event.<\/p>\n

A Commemorative 1916 Cycle from the Pearse Museum in St. Enda\u2019s Park, Rathfarnham to Eamon Ceannt Park in Crumlin will mark the role that the bicycle played in the Easter Rising as volunteers left what was Scoil Eanna on the morning of Easter Monday and made their way by bike into the city centre to participate in the rebellion.<\/p>\n

The cycle (at 11:30) will be preceded by a free tour of the museum and a talk by the museum curator.<\/p>\n

At the finish at Eamon Ceannt Park\/ Sundrive Park there will also be a brief talk about the role of Eamon Ceannt and Joseph Plunkett, who\u2019s family had an estate where volunteers trained at Larkfield (now the site of Supervalu at the corner of Sundrive Road and Kimmage Road).<\/p>\n

There are a number of conflicting starting times for this event. On some websites it is 12:00 and on others 13:00. The timings that I will pick is in the middle: At 12:30 the Dutch Ambassador will launch the event, followed by a gentle 6km family cycle at 12:45.<\/p>\n

There will be some stalls with food and bike related products in closed-for-traffic Chesterfield Avenue in the middle of Phoenix Park and the Cargobike races will happen there as well. You can bring your own picnic.<\/p>\n

Sarah Pierce’s “Pathos of Distance” is the first installation ever displayed at the National Gallery of Ireland. It is the product of a research collaboration between Pierce and the Gallery\u2019s ESB CSIA. Formed around 42 images relating to Irish migration and diaspora, created between 1813 and 1912, the exhibition explores the concept, themes and subject of matter of the ESB CSIA research project: Visualising the Irish Diaspora.<\/p>\n

ActionAid is inviting to the documentary screening of “Stealing Africa” to mark World Public Services Day.<\/p>\n

The documentary exposes how mining companies in Zambia are making huge profits and are avoiding their fair share of taxes, while two-thirds of people in Zambia live below the poverty line.
\nZambia has an abundance of natural resources, but it continues to rank among the poorest 20 countries in the world. When multinationals avoid paying taxes, countries like Zambia are starved of revenue to fund public services like schools, hospitals, medicines and roads.<\/p>\n

ActionAid\u2019s Tax Justice Photo exhibition will be on display in the room from 17:30 and can be viewed before and after the film screening. The Irish Film Board present their collection of “After \u201916” short films. After \u201916 is commemorating and celebrating the centenary of the Easter Rising in 1916.<\/p>\n

The nine short films that make up the collection are a creative response by Irish filmmakers to the 1916 events. The stories told are a mixture of live action drama, animation and documentary. The full list of films in the series can be found on the website below.<\/p>\n

Films last between 8-12 minutes with a combined totla run time of 115 minutes.<\/p>\n

Six times will the \u201cPeople\u2019s Art 2016″ exhibition take place this year. It is an art exhibition on the rails\/fence of St. Stephen\u2019s Green.<\/p>\n

People\u2019s Art Dublin is a voluntary, part time, non profit making group, brought together by Dublin City Council to promote the visual arts to the public of Dublin. “The government\u2019s failure to follow through on its promise to host 4000 refugees (we\u2019ve taken in 10 people so far), coupled with its inhumane asylum procedure (1000s of people languishing in Direct Provision centres unable to work or develop) contradicts the empathy being demonstrated by the Irish public.”<\/p>\n

World Refugee Week 2016 – Celebration<\/h2>\n

The Smithfield Sessions are back. Once every month, Bluefire will organise an event throughout the summer and the first one is in collaboration with the Irish Refugee Council as part of World Refugee Week.<\/p>\n

There will be Djembe (West-African drumming) workshops, Forr\u00f3 Ireland Dance Workshops & Performances, music performances & spoken word, arts & crafts for adults, pavement chalking and a world cafe.<\/p>\n

The performers are Dylan Tighe (Dublin based singer song writer\/ EndDP activist), Jambo Jambo (Warm Congolese sounds), The Vulture Collective (Crusty swing jazz), The King Mob (Spoken Word).<\/p>\n

And there will be a World Cafe, a place to start conversations and discuss and link ideas about a particular topic. A weekend long music festival is coming up in The Workman’s Club from 24-26 June.<\/p>\n

It starts on Friday with hip-hop, soul and R&B DJs. Then at 20:00 the live bands & performers The Altered House, Cian Nugent and Toby Kaar will perform.<\/p>\n

On Saturday it starts from 12:00 with the Greenshoe Market, at 15:00 the Alison Spittle Chat Show with Danish comedian Sofie Hagen will entertain. The live music later will come from Beach, TooFools, Steven McCann, Lorcan O’Dwyer.<\/p>\n

On Sunday Black Bank Fold will be on stage from 20:00 and at midnight the weekend will be completed with the Workman’s Club Karaoke. A variety of DJs will spin in between.<\/p>\n

BREXIT and Who are these neighbours of ours?
\n<\/strong><\/p>\n

It is less than a week until the British voters will decide if they will stay in the EU or if they will leave and while we in Ireland have no influence over the vote, it is still interesting to look at the what Britain was before the EU discussion began and what it is now.<\/p>\n

I love the multicultural society in Ireland and if you compare it to an Ireland from the 80s, the society has changed SIGNIFICANTLY. Not for everyone, I know and you don’t have to change anyway if you don’t want to, but for the people that like variety, they can find events from all different countries and cultural backgrounds in Dublin.<\/p>\n

But whenever I was in the UK in the past, I was always puzzled that the UK was soooo much more multicultural and that all seems to be working quite well in the society. There are Indians&Pakistani, Africans, Asians and Caucasians and a lot more in close proximity and nobody seemed to mind in the slightest.<\/p>\n

The favourite national dish seems to be Indian, Italians are in charge of the previous national dish: Fish & Chips and they brought Coffee and Ice Cream, Jamaicans provide the music and had a sizeable influence on youth culture in the 60s and 70s were hugely important, Black people seemed better integrated than in most other countries. All in all, it just seemed as if Britain endorsed their colonial past by accepting all different cultures in and giving them the same opportunities. I know that Irish people had to deal with a lot of subliminal or even open racism at some point, but it seemed to me that this had improved a lot as well.<\/p>\n

Please note: No formal research went into this, it was just an impression!!<\/p>\n

But then the Brexit discussion happened! And the “new” Britain seems to be divisive, intolerant, selfish, excluding, “we are better than they”, confrontational , bullying and Anti-European or even Anti-International. What happened??<\/p>\n

Imagine you had a nice, friendly and tolerant neighbour who over night became an intolerant, antisocial bully. You would probably not WANT to have anything to do with the bully anymore, right? So, if the majority of British people decides for leaving the EU, I think we should be glad that they are gone and we should treat them like you would treat the anti-social bully neighbour.<\/p>\n

By the way: I don’t think the EU is perfect and we should be grateful for all it does, BUT I do think that Ireland and many other countries have and still do benefit hugely from the EU. I also am a strong believer in co-operation and “strength in numbers” instead of doing it on your own and I think that improving the EU from the inside is the right approach. So, Brexit supporters, I don’t understand you at all!<\/p>\n
