Hi all!<\/a><\/p>\n

This weekend is the 9th anniversary of the Dublin Event Guide (for Free Events)!! 9 years or 468 weeks, some of you are receiving this weekly e-mail magazine and I didn’t miss one single week in these nine years. Some are getting today the 468th version, others have joined later, but no matter when you joined our still growing community, you are very welcome and hopefully will enjoy all the great things Dublin has to offer.<\/a><\/p>\n

I was on holidays until Wednesday and consequently there was relatively little time this week to prepare for the Dublin Event Guide, which means that I am hopelessly delayed today again. Last night Mr Sandman just sabotaged my work in the most irreverent way, so I wasn’t as productive as I needed to be and therefore this week unfortunately will be again posted in two stages. The first stage on the website and in the smart phone is a preliminary Dublin Event Guide. Then when all events are included the final version will be sent.<\/a><\/p>\n

This is the FINAL version! Apologies for the huge delay again!<\/a><\/p>\n

And on the 9th anniversary I have some good news regarding the bills! The full amount came together for the May bill thanks to some generous people! So a bit was taken already from the June amount and now only EUR 130 are still needed. Thanks for all the help! Can you help here?<\/a><\/p>\n

This section is intended to provide some help in picking and choosing from the huge number of events by sharing with you what I will\/might or would do. This is not a “best of…” list and if an event is not listed here, it by no means implies that the event is not interesting. Instead my “picks” are just based on my personal preferences. All events mentioned here are described in detail further down.<\/em><\/p>\n

This weekend the Dublin Port Riverfest definitely has to be on the list of the Picks. Because the current Science Gallery exhibition closes on Sunday, I also have to add that once again here. If the Bloom Festival in Phoenix Park was free, it would have the top spot here, but it isn’t free.<\/a><\/p>\n

Because the weather will change soon again (unfortunately!) I would say, do this weekend what is most weather compatible. As long as it is good, be outside and when it turns sour again, look for the indoors events, there are plenty of both!<\/a><\/p>\n

I got my Electricity Bill this week and discovered a table on the back of the page that identifies how the electricity is generated. The table says that in Ireland 34.5% of the electricity is made from renewable energy sources, the rest id from Natural Gas, Coal and Peat. Unfortunately the ESB only uses 19.4% from renewable energy sources.<\/a><\/p>\n

On the same day I discovered this video on Facebook https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/greenpeace.international\/videos\/10153896061433300\/<\/a> It is a video by Greenpeace that says that from 07-11 May Portugal powered the entire country solely from renewable energy. And in 2016 until now, about 75% of the energy was from renewable sources (Solar, wind and hydro). It continues to say that in Germany 87% of the electricity on 08 May was from renewables. And in the UK Solar power beat coal generated power for one day.<\/p>\n

Looks like Ireland – and especially the ESB – will have a LOT of catching up to do!!<\/a><\/div>\n<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n

Play-it-forward Family Event – Used children’s toys\/books and clothes needed<\/h2>\n

The Primary School Shellybanks Educate Together will run a “Play-it-forward family event” next Saturday (11 June from 12:00-16:00) and if you have used children\u2019s toys, books and clothes for their market on Saturday, they would love you forever. ;-) Donations for the market will aprpecaited on Friday 10 June, from 17:00 to 19:00 in Mount Tabor Hall at Sandymount Gree, in Sandymount Village.<\/a><\/p>\n

Next Saturday thre will also be an entertainment programme including face painting, arts and crafts, dance party, bake sale and a raffle. Admission is free and you are all welcome.<\/a><\/p>\n

Fifty Printmakers from eight printmaking studios around Ireland were invited by The Leinster Printmaking Studio, Clane, Co. Kildare to create \u2018little prints\u2019 on \u2018little known events or incidents\u2019 during or around the time of the 1916 Rising and the exhibition will tour the Dublin Libraries in 2016.<\/a><\/p>\n

Each library displaying the exhibition will host a workshop in basic printmaking. Participants will be invited to illustrate an incident\/artefact of their choice. A small selection of the resulting work may be added to the website and may be included in the display in the library. Please check with the library for date and time of their respective workshop.<\/a><\/p>\n

The exhibition “Field Test – Radical Adventures in Future Farming” (11 Mar – 05 Jun 2016) in the Science Gallery is exploring how farming will look like in the future and what new developments will change farming so that we can deal with the global food challenges.<\/a><\/p>\n

From Farm Cyborgs (for example a Virtual Reality environment for chicken so that they can think they are free range), via odd, unique and forward looking foods (e.g. insects for improving your protein intake); growth houses for your home; very different seeds (e.g. beans that taste like beef) to the “LOCI Food Lab” (outside near the entrance to the Science Gallery) where you can get a customised snack, the exhibition has a lot of interesting exhibits that revealing, intriguing or surprising.<\/a><\/p>\n

Like all Science Gallery exhibitions, FIELD TEST is suitable for all ages with a particular focus on the age group of 15-25, but I would say that chilren from 10 years of age can understand the whole exhibition if they get some additional explanations and there are even some exhibits that would work for younger children.<\/a><\/p>\n

When you go to see the exhibition, get help from the Science Gallery mediators! They are helpers (usually students or graduates) that know the whole exhibition inside out and are very happy to help with a lot more information than the little labels at the exhibits can provide. Use their excellent service!<\/a><\/p>\n

The Science Gallery has very visitor friendly opening hours of Tue-Fri 12:00-20:00 and Sat+Sun 12:00-18:00.

Hard Working Class Heroes and First Music Contact are organising six weekends of “Dublin Live Music Trails” this year. The performances will be 20 minutes long and will be acoustic in all sorts of usual and unusual venues. So it is feasible to see & hear ALL gigs because they are all in walking distance.<\/a><\/p>\n

This is the last day of “Field Test”:<\/a><\/p>\n

The exhibition “Field Test – Radical Adventures in Future Farming” (11 Mar – 05 Jun 2016) in the Science Gallery is exploring how farming will look like in the future and what new developments will change farming so that we can deal with the global food challenges.<\/a><\/p>\n

From Farm Cyborgs (for example a Virtual Reality environment for chicken so that they can think they are free range), via odd, unique and forward looking foods (e.g. insects for improving your protein intake); growth houses for your home; very different seeds (e.g. beans that taste like beef) to the “LOCI Food Lab” (outside near the entrance to the Science Gallery) where you can get a customised snack, the exhibition has a lot of interesting exhibits that revealing, intriguing or surprising.<\/a><\/p>\n

Like all Science Gallery exhibitions, FIELD TEST is suitable for all ages with a particular focus on the age group of 15-25, but I would say that chilren from 10 years of age can understand the whole exhibition if they get some additional explanations and there are even some exhibits that would work for younger children.<\/a><\/p>\n

When you go to see the exhibition, get help from the Science Gallery mediators! They are helpers (usually students or graduates) that know the whole exhibition inside out and are very happy to help with a lot more information than the little labels at the exhibits can provide. Use their excellent service!<\/a><\/p>\n

The Science Gallery has very visitor friendly opening hours of Tue-Fri 12:00-20:00 and Sat+Sun 12:00-18:00.

Women’s Mini Marathon<\/h2>\n

The yearly Women’s Mini Marathon will happen again on the June bank holiday. It is a 10km run with the start line in Baggot Street and the finish line at Fitzwilliam Square. The event is a charity fundraiser where usually the participants choose their preferred charity and raise money for it. Only women are allowed to participate!<\/a><\/p>\n

Registration is closed now and the event is not free, but it is free to cheer on and support the nearly 40,000 runners.<\/a><\/p>\n

The course map is here<\/a> and the route is roughly from Fitzwilliam Street via Baggot Street to Merrion Road, then via Nutley Lane to Stillorgan Road. Then the course does a loop out on Stillorgan Road towards the Radisson Hotel and back again to Nutley Lane. Then onwards through Donnybrook and back to Fitzwilliam Street.<\/p>\n

Race numbers and bags have to be collected at the Woman’s World Show in the RDS Simmonscourt Complex on Saturday or Sunday between 10:00 and 18:00.<\/a><\/p>\n

(The road closures are listed here<\/a>. They seem quite extensive (or excessive!?) considering that even roads that don’t seem to be on the course are closed at various times between 07:00 and 19:30.)<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

The event series “The Invention of Italy” continues with a talk about “1960: The economic miracle and La Dolce Vita” by Simona Colarizi.<\/a><\/p>\n

In just over a decade Italy had emerged from the material and moral ashes of the Second World War and a searing civil war that spelled the end of Fascism. A new democratic and republican State had been born, but the changes with respect to the past were not limited to institutions and politics. As elsewhere in Western Europe the Golden Age had also dawned in Italy, which experienced a genuine economic, social and cultural revolution. The primarily agricultural country was transformed into an industrial power, ranked seventh among the world\u2019s greatest. A miracle \u2013 this was the exact term used to define those years of tumultuous growth in Italy, the years of Federico Fellini\u2019s \u201cLa Dolce Vita\u201d which captured both the highs of the economic boom but also growing nostalgia for a world of tradition and certainty that was forever past.<\/a><\/p>\n

The Irish Film Board present their collection of “After \u201916” short films. After \u201916 is commemorating and celebrating the centenary of the Easter Rising in 1916.<\/a><\/p>\n

The nine short films that make up the collection are a creative response by Irish filmmakers to the 1916 events. The stories told are a mixture of live action drama, animation and documentary. The full list of films in the series can be found on the website below.<\/a><\/p>\n

The Balloon Trip is free, but it seems that \u201cfirst come, first served\u201d is the chosen method of filling the balloon. The EURO 2016, the European Soccer Championship, is starting on Friday with the match of France vs Romania.<\/a><\/p>\n

EURO 2016 will take place in France this year and it will run until 10 July. Ireland’s first match is on Monday (13 June) at 17:00.<\/a><\/p>\n

Unfortunately I haven’t heard about any public viewings in Dublin. They are extremely popular in many other countries, but Ireland hasn’t adopted that great idea yet (?).<\/a><\/p>\n

New Architecture and Planing in Dublin – Is it getting better or worse?
<\/strong><\/p>\n

Let me start with this: I am NOT an architect, not an expert in building design and I also am not a structural engineer or a town planer, so I am not speaking from a place of trained or studied knowledge, BUT I do have an opinion.<\/a><\/p>\n

On Friday it was announced that Hawkins House in Poolbeg Street, near Tara Station will be knocked down and replaced by a new building. The Department of Health will move out and once the building is finished some other department will move in. The Department of Health will move to the former Bank of Ireland building in Baggot Street.<\/a><\/p>\n

TheJournal.ie had one of the best articles about this development here<\/a> and they also provide some detail about the new building.<\/p>\n

Through my day job, I know the current Hawkins House building reasonably well and I have to say that it is VERY ugly and doesn’t seem to be structurally safe anymore. Scaffolding is supporting the building in many places OR is protecting pedestrians from pieces that might come off. On the inside, Hawkins House is certainly not modern (it is from 1962), but not too bad looking. However, I can see many areas regarding comfort, but also regarding energy efficiency etc where significant improvements would be hugely beneficial.<\/a><\/p>\n

After the announcement a good few people argued that building projects and the massive amount of money they will cost shouldn’t carried out as long as sick children can’t be looked after well and appropriately and I can empathise with this point. However, I don’t think one is directly linked to the other or simpler put, I don’t think one should exclude the other!<\/a><\/p>\n

So with Hawkins House needing some significant work anyway, it probably makes more sense to knock it down than to patch it up.<\/a><\/p>\n

The newspapers write about the “ugliest building in Dublin” and there are many competing for the prize. Hawkins House is a strong contender, so I was curious to see the proposal for its replacement and shockingly (but not THAT surprisingly) the replacement doesn’t look much better at all. It is a more modern ugly building, but it is questionable if any normal office building can ever look good.<\/a><\/p>\n

I heard (but have no proof for it) that Hawkins House won some prizes when it was built in 1962 and in the same way the new building could win prizes, but in 40 years time, I would expect the new Hawkins House also being declared ugly. So now change there.<\/a><\/p>\n

What puzzles me the most, though, is the fact that the current 11 storey building will be replaced with a 10 storey building. How does that makes sense? Liberty Hall and the Ulster Bank buildings are quite near and they are all higher than Hawkins House. And with space limitations in the City Centre, we need to make maximum use of the available space, so I would have expected an INCREASE in height, not a decrease. It should be at least 13 or 14 floors high, not 10.<\/a><\/p>\n

And if you accept that in 30-50 years it will be declared as ugly anyway, then I also wonder if it should be attempted to make it “pretty” for today’s taste!?<\/a><\/div>\n
