Hi all!<\/p>\n

Once again this much too rare occasion of having the Dublin Event Guide in your Inbox on a Friday already. I hope you won’t get tooo confused with that. The reason is that I will be on my “summer holidays” over the weekend. Not much time because I have to be back for the next Dublin Event Guide. But at least some – hopefully warm – days away.<\/p>\n

Oddly it doesn’t seem to matter when I send the Dublin Event Guide, though. Most of you rightly and understandably want to receive it earlier than the usual late Saturday delivery. But when I send it on a Friday morning already, surprisingly the same amount of people opens it. :-O I winder why that is!?<\/p>\n

An update on the bills again: The month is nearly over and we are still EUR 65 short. :-((. Not good! Can you help here?<\/a><\/p>\n

Outdoor Movie \u201cDirty Dancing\u201d + British Irish Chamber Raceday – Ticket Competition<\/h2>\n

Leopardstown Racecourse is inviting to the British Irish Chamber Raceday, the only Friday evening race in Leopardstown and they will also provide a free open air screening of the movie “Dirty Dancing” on their large screen after the final race.<\/p>\n

There will be a limited number of fold-out chairs available (first come first served), but if you bring blankets, deck chairs, cushions etc you can create your own little outdoor luxury viewing spot. The Bulmers festival Marquee will be open to provide cover if needed to sell refreshments.<\/p>\n

The Bohemian String Quartet will perform well known movie themes before the movie starts.<\/p>\n

NO Dublin City Soul Festival 2016!<\/h2>\n

I have to mention it because some event websites (e.g. visitdublin.com) still wrongly list the Dublin City Soul Festival for the coming weekend and also the website of the Dublin City Soul Festival itself seems a little misleading. Unfortuantely there will be NO Dublin City Soul Festival in 2016 because funding could not be found.<\/p>\n

There is still some hope that this great festival will return at some stage, but if, when and how is totally unclear.<\/p>\n

This is a very interesting exhibition. Lynsey Browne and Lucy Ryan gave 45 homeless people a disposable camera and invited them to use them to record scenes from their life. 30 cameras were returned and only 15 photographers came a second time to provide captions for the images.<\/p>\n

Some of the pictures are shown at an exhibition in the Powerscourt Townhouse Centre. All pictures are on sale.<\/p>\n

Fifty Printmakers from eight printmaking studios around Ireland were invited by The Leinster Printmaking Studio, Clane, Co. Kildare to create \u2018little prints\u2019 on \u2018little known events or incidents\u2019 during or around the time of the 1916 Rising and the exhibition will tour the Dublin Libraries in 2016.<\/p>\n

Each library displaying the exhibition will host a workshop in basic printmaking. Participants will be invited to illustrate an incident\/artefact of their choice. A small selection of the resulting work may be added to the website and may be included in the display in the library. Please check with the library for date and time of their respective workshop.<\/p>\n

Battle for the Bay is a yearly Kitesurfing and SUP (Standup Paddleboard) competition on Saturday and Sunday that has been expanded to a popular festival on Dollymount Beach. It is a good atmosphere event for the whole family and admission is free. The organiser is Puremagic Water Sports.<\/p>\n

In addition to the Kitesurfing and SUP competitions, there will be other watersports demonstrations. The exhibition “Field Test – Radical Adventures in Future Farming” (11 Mar – 05 Jun 2016) in the Science Gallery is exploring how farming will look like in the future and what new developments will change farming so that we can deal with the global food challenges.<\/p>\n

From Farm Cyborgs (for example a Virtual Reality environment for chicken so that they can think they are free range), via odd, unique and forward looking foods (e.g. insects for improving your protein intake); growth houses for your home; very different seeds (e.g. beans that taste like beef) to the “LOCI Food Lab” (outside near the entrance to the Science Gallery) where you can get a customised snack, the exhibition has a lot of interesting exhibits that revealing, intriguing or surprising.<\/p>\n

Like all Science Gallery exhibitions, FIELD TEST is suitable for all ages with a particular focus on the age group of 15-25, but I would say that chilren from 10 years of age can understand the whole exhibition if they get some additional explanations and there are even some exhibits that would work for younger children.<\/p>\n

When you go to see the exhibition, get help from the Science Gallery mediators! They are helpers (usually students or graduates) that know the whole exhibition inside out and are very happy to help with a lot more information than the little labels at the exhibits can provide. Use their excellent service!<\/p>\n

Battle for the Bay is a yearly Kitesurfing and SUP (Standup Paddleboard) competition on Saturday and Sunday that has been expanded to a popular festival on Dollymount Beach. It is a good atmosphere event for the whole family and admission is free. The organiser is Puremagic Water Sports.<\/p>\n

In addition to the Kitesurfing and SUP competitions, there will be other watersports demonstrations. This year’s Africa Day event will take place again at Farmleigh House in Phoenix Park. Irish Aid and the embassies from seven African countries are organising this event. Admission is free.<\/p>\n

There will be LOTS of music, food, an African Bazaar, a Dance Zone, Drumming Workshops and a Kids Zone with workshops and storytelling and games etc. .<\/p>\n

The exhibition “Field Test – Radical Adventures in Future Farming” (11 Mar – 05 Jun 2016) in the Science Gallery is exploring how farming will look like in the future and what new developments will change farming so that we can deal with the global food challenges.<\/p>\n

From Farm Cyborgs (for example a Virtual Reality environment for chicken so that they can think they are free range), via odd, unique and forward looking foods (e.g. insects for improving your protein intake); growth houses for your home; very different seeds (e.g. beans that taste like beef) to the “LOCI Food Lab” (outside near the entrance to the Science Gallery) where you can get a customised snack, the exhibition has a lot of interesting exhibits that revealing, intriguing or surprising.<\/p>\n

Like all Science Gallery exhibitions, FIELD TEST is suitable for all ages with a particular focus on the age group of 15-25, but I would say that chilren from 10 years of age can understand the whole exhibition if they get some additional explanations and there are even some exhibits that would work for younger children.<\/p>\n

When you go to see the exhibition, get help from the Science Gallery mediators! They are helpers (usually students or graduates) that know the whole exhibition inside out and are very happy to help with a lot more information than the little labels at the exhibits can provide. Use their excellent service!<\/p>\n

The Science Gallery has very visitor friendly opening hours of Tue-Fri 12:00-20:00 and Sat+Sun 12:00-18:00.

Around 12,000 people in Ireland are thought to suffer from Myalgic Encephalomyelitis (ME), now often diagnosed under the name Chronic Fatigue Syndrome (CFS). Symptoms include overwhelming flu-like exhaustion made worse by exertion (physical or mental exertion), muscle and joint pains, sore throats, swollen glands, disturbed sleep, impaired concentration & memory, dizziness and headaches. A particular feature of the disease is that the condition waxes and wanes over time and symptoms can fluctuate a great deal from day to day, or even within a day.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

Conflict + The City is a free 2-day conference on Tuesday and Wednesday organised by Dublin City Council and the School of Architecture in UCD. 1916 is over, now we need to move on to the next historical period and it doesn’t get necessarily easier to explain what happened afterwards. This conference focuses on the architectural development of Dublin after the destructions in 1916 and in the following years.<\/p>\n

“The two-day public conference will explore the street conflicts in Dublin from 1916 to 1922, as key moments and aspects in pursuit of Irish independence, which led to major architectural destruction, and which in turn brought about significant urban rebuilding schemes. Thinking about the physical make-up of the city, especially the commercial spaces of Dublin\u2019s north city centre, much of how we move through, spend time in and experience the city comes out of these 1920s reconstruction projects. So then, the scars of conflict and the efforts towards rebuilding resonate through Dublin\u2019s architecture today, almost 100 years later.”<\/p>\n

But since destruction and reconstruction was not unique to Dublin in the first half of the last century, it will be compared to other cities: from contemporary Beirut to Blitz-time London; from Cold War bunkers to Belfast\u2019s peace-lines.<\/p>\n

Free Wednesday – Free Entrance to OPW Heritage Sites<\/h2>\n

Entry charges at some OPW Heritage sites are waived once a month, on the “Free Wednesday”, the first Wednesday of the month. The Office of Public Works (OPW), who looks after the state owned heritage sites, wants to encourage people to visit the historic sites that it manages and has therefore started this great initiative in 2011.<\/p>\n

Most OPW managed sites can already be visited for free (e.g. Farmleigh House, Phoenix Park, National Botanic Gardens, Pearse Museum, etc), but some sites that normally charge a fee will be free every first Wednesday as well. According to the World Health Organisation (WHO), the use and misuse of antibiotics accelerates the emergence of drug-resistant bacterial strains. If these new strains of bacteria cause an infection, there will be no immediate treatment and the patient may die. In the U.S., 700,000 deaths occur every year due to antibiotic resistance.<\/p>\n

Antibiotics are not just used to treat human infections, but are also being misused in animal agriculture. 80% of all antibiotics sold in the U.S. are for animal agriculture.<\/p>\n

Big Time Crime vs Small Time Crime: Speed Limits and Killing people!
\n<\/strong><\/p>\n

I got caught breaking the law! Yes, it is hard to admit (especially for a German :-) ), but I did break the law (unintentionally) and I got caught AND paid for it. A few weeks ago, I drove home on a very quiet Sunday evening on a well built and well lit street in Dublin. Hardly any traffic, no pedestrians or cyclists and I was not distracted by mobile phone or anything else. All was well…<\/p>\n

…until about two weeks later when a letter arrived, telling me that I was recklessly breaking the law. What a bad boy! I know! I drove 59 km\/h in a 50 km\/h zone. I had to pay EUR 80 and will be punished for three years due to the 3 points I also got.<\/p>\n

Interestingly, if I had driven 120km\/h in a 50km\/h zone, I would have been punished in the EXACT same way. Odd!!!<\/p>\n

Then on Tuesday, I heard about the shooting of another gang member of the two feuding Dublin criminal gangs. We might think, that it is not the worst if they terminate each other, but keep in mind that in every killing one side will win over the other and it will give that “winning” side more power, which is never a good thing when you talk about criminals. These ongoing killings are a bad bad thing on another level. As we have seen, the risk for random bystanders is significant, because these killers seem to have trouble at times knowing who they really want to get and also because they are getting more and more ruthless.<\/p>\n

So how does my speeding tickets link to the gang war in Dublin? — It doesn’t really! I am not the type of person who complains that the police should spend their time on hunting down the big criminals and let the small criminals go. I broke the law and got punished, which is annoying but fair. But when it comes to fairness, it seems that bigger criminals get away with a lot more.<\/p>\n

For Friday of this week a big “clampdown” on speeding has been announced. It’s easy!! Put up a few vans around the country in locations that are not really accident hotspots and then just send the tickets by post. You will get lots of money back and have a nice Press Release about the success and the catching of the criminals.<\/p>\n

At the same time, the gangs, make millions through drugs and from their HUGE amount of properties that most likely were bought from drug money as well. Clampdown? Not much!<\/p>\n

Is it resources? I don’t think so! It is just easier to get honest people to own up and pay up for their small crimes than to get criminals to own up to their big crimes. It not wrong to punish the small time criminals, but it is wrong to let the big time criminals get away with as much as they do.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n
