This week, I ran into problems AGAIN. You might know that I work through the night on a Friday (and on the Thursday) to get this weekly e-mail magazine written for you. But for some reason, I was absolutely not able to keep my eyes open and in the middle of a sentence I would fall asleep in front of my computer and it happened again and again and again. No chance to even do the two stage sending as I have done before because I was so so late with everything.<\/p>\n

I know I will pay for it dearly with UNSUBSCRIBES from people that have enough of all my delays and I am really sorry about it, but there was nothing I could do. :-(. And believe me, I am as frustrated about it as you are.<\/p>\n

This section is intended to provide some help in picking and choosing from the huge number of events by sharing with you what I will\/might or would do. This is not a “best of…” list and if an event is not listed here, it by no means implies that the event is not interesting. Instead my “picks” are just based on my personal preferences. All events mentioned here are described in detail further down.<\/em><\/p>\n

The May Bank Holiday weekend is never the best weekend for big events. The bank holiday weekends in June and August are usually better. BUT we can’t complain this time.<\/p>\n

There is the Gumball 3000 events on Saturday and Sunday, Phizzfest is happening this weekend, the Bray Jazz festival is on for the whole weekend, the Dublin Music Trail is happening on Sunday and Monday, the Latvian May Festival is on Sunday, the Smithfield Market Fair is also on Sunday, a Cinco de Mayo festival is on on Monday, Green Drinks Dublin is on Tuesday and the First Wednesday (free entrance to heritage sites) is on Wednesday. If that is not enough!! :-)<\/p>\n

And a special event (not free, but really good!) is happening on Friday. Kevin Doyle and his band is performing an Elvis Tribute Gig and Kevin is BRILLIANT! Close your eyes and you will think Elvis is singing to you. I will be there and while I won’t be on stage (I am in a backing choir that sings with Kevin at bigger gigs), I am wholeheartedly supporting this gig.<\/p>\n

Kevin Doyle sounds just like Elvis Presley! Unlike some other Elvis Tribute Artists, Kevin knows very well that he is not Elvis and he is not even trying to be, but he brings you the closest ever to hearing the “King” live. Kevin is a great singer and a really nice guy and he has a super band behind him, the “Elvis The Way It Was Orchestra”.<\/p>\n

On Friday 06 May, they are playing a gig in the Sugar Club and it will be a great event. I have been at many of Kevin’s gigs and you can trust me on this. There might even be some unexpected surprises!! ;-)<\/p>\n

The Carmichael Centre is a support organisation for 48 different charities and voluntary groups and their main fundraiser is a yearly concert in St. Patrick’s Cathedral for the past 21 years.<\/p>\n

Bealtaine Festival – celebrating creativity as we age<\/h2>\n

Every May, the Bealtaine Festival is organised by “Age & Opportunity”.<\/p>\n

Bealtaine is Irish for May, so the name doesn’t reveal what the festival is about. The tag line “Celebrating creativity as we age” helps a LITTLE further, but it is – probably on purpose – a very “limp” tag line. Some years ago, the festival organisers made it clear who it was for when they said that it was of Age 55+, but do we really see 55 now as “older” people? I guess it depends where you are yourself. 55 is ancient for an 8 year old, but for a 50 year old, 55 is just middle aged.<\/p>\n

Spring Into Heritage – Events Programme – Dun Laoghaire Rathdown<\/h2>\n

The “Spring into Heritage 2016” programme, is a series of free guided tours over the next 10 weeks from 21 March until 29 May in Dun Laoghaire Rathdown. It is a great programme that gives you a chance to learn more about the history of this part of greater Dublin. The National Maritime Museum, the Dalkey Castle & Heritage Centre and a 1916 Graves tour in Deansgrange Cemetery were added new this year and there are also tours of the Oratory on Library Road in Dun Laoghaire, Cabinteely House and Marlay House.<\/p>\n

Fifty Printmakers from eight printmaking studios around Ireland were invited by The Leinster Printmaking Studio, Clane, Co. Kildare to create \u2018little prints\u2019 on \u2018little known events or incidents\u2019 during or around the time of the 1916 Rising and the exhibition will tour the Dublin Libraries in 2016.<\/p>\n

Each library displaying the exhibition will host a workshop in basic printmaking. Participants will be invited to illustrate an incident\/artefact of their choice. A small selection of the resulting work may be added to the website and may be included in the display in the library. The exhibition “Field Test – Radical Adventures in Future Farming” (11 Mar – 05 Jun 2016) in the Science Gallery is exploring how farming will look like in the future and what new developments will change farming so that we can deal with the global food challenges.<\/p>\n

From Farm Cyborgs (for example a Virtual Reality environment for chicken so that they can think they are free range), via odd, unique and forward looking foods (e.g. insects for improving your protein intake); growth houses for your home; very different seeds (e.g. beans that taste like beef) to the “LOCI Food Lab” (outside near the entrance to the Science Gallery) where you can get a customised snack, the exhibition has a lot of interesting exhibits that revealing, intriguing or surprising.<\/p>\n

Like all Science Gallery exhibitions, FIELD TEST is suitable for all ages with a particular focus on the age group of 15-25, but I would say that chilren from 10 years of age can understand the whole exhibition if they get some additional explanations and there are even some exhibits that would work for younger children.<\/p>\n

When you go to see the exhibition, get help from the Science Gallery mediators! They are helpers (usually students or graduates) that know the whole exhibition inside out and are very happy to help with a lot more information than the little labels at the exhibits can provide. Use their excellent service!<\/p>\n

The Gumball Rally or Gumball 3000 is a yearly 3000 mile road rally of super cars that takes in Europe and usually starts in Britain. This year the starting point is Dublin and the rally will then go via Belfast, Edinburgh, London. Luxembourg, Germany, Prague, Budapest to Bucharest.<\/p>\n

On Saturday from 12:00-22:00 you can admire the super cars when they arrive bit by bit. Expect to see Ferrari, Porsche, Bugatti, Lamborghini, Aston Martin, Koenigsegg, Jaguar, Bentley, Rolls Royce and more. There will also be many vintage cars. All together more than 100 cars will take part. The cars can be viewed close up until 22:00.<\/p>\n

On Sunday Gumball 3000 will start from Merrion Square at 10:00 and you can come and see the superstars and supercars set off. Some well known participants are David Hasselhoff, Formula 1 driver David Coulthard, rapper EVE, actor Sullivan Stapleton and DJ Afrojack.<\/p>\n

It is an extremely stubborn myth in Ireland that Summer starts on 01 May. Primary teachers were and are still (!!) teaching it, despite Met Eireann’s repeated attempts to correct this misinformation.<\/p>\n

It is true that the Celts started their “summer” on 01 May, but they lived by a completely different calendar: For the Celts the Dark half of the year started on 01 November and the light half started on 01 May. So strictly speaking it wasn’t even their start of summer, it was just the start of the light half of the year. In addition their day started at sunset!<\/p>\n

So, if you live like the Celts, your year starts on 01 November and your day starts at sunset, then for you, 01 May is a good day to start the summer. ;-)<\/p>\n

The Gumball Rally or Gumball 3000 is a yearly 3000 mile road rally of super cars that takes in Europe and usually starts in Britain. This year the starting point is Dublin and the rally will then go via Belfast, Edinburgh, London. Luxembourg, Germany, Prague, Budapest to Bucharest.<\/p>\n

On Saturday from 12:00-22:00 you can admire the super cars when they arrive bit by bit. Expect to see Ferrari, Porsche, Bugatti, Lamborghini, Aston Martin, Koenigsegg, Jaguar, Bentley, Rolls Royce and more. There will also be many vintage cars. All together more than 100 cars will take part. The cars can be viewed close up until 22:00.<\/p>\n

On Sunday Gumball 3000 will start from Merrion Square at 10:00 and you can come and see the superstars and supercars set off. Some well known participants are David Hasselhoff, Formula 1 driver David Coulthard, rapper EVE, actor Sullivan Stapleton and DJ Afrojack.<\/p>\n

The exhibition “Field Test – Radical Adventures in Future Farming” (11 Mar – 05 Jun 2016) in the Science Gallery is exploring how farming will look like in the future and what new developments will change farming so that we can deal with the global food challenges.<\/p>\n

From Farm Cyborgs (for example a Virtual Reality environment for chicken so that they can think they are free range), via odd, unique and forward looking foods (e.g. insects for improving your protein intake); growth houses for your home; very different seeds (e.g. beans that taste like beef) to the “LOCI Food Lab” (outside near the entrance to the Science Gallery) where you can get a customised snack, the exhibition has a lot of interesting exhibits that revealing, intriguing or surprising.<\/p>\n

Like all Science Gallery exhibitions, FIELD TEST is suitable for all ages with a particular focus on the age group of 15-25, but I would say that chilren from 10 years of age can understand the whole exhibition if they get some additional explanations and there are even some exhibits that would work for younger children.<\/p>\n

When you go to see the exhibition, get help from the Science Gallery mediators! They are helpers (usually students or graduates) that know the whole exhibition inside out and are very happy to help with a lot more information than the little labels at the exhibits can provide. Use their excellent service!<\/p>\n

The “Dublin Sketchers” is an informal group of (hobby) artists who go somewhere different in Dublin every Sunday (e.g. National Museum, Maritime Museum, Dublin Flea Market, Farmleigh, Botanic Gardens, Dublin Castle, Science Gallery, …), sketch for one to two hours and then meet up for coffee afterwards and discuss their sketches.<\/p>\n

There are some hugely talented people among them and it is a great idea to meet up with others who have the same hobby. \u201cForgotten Voices\u201d is a 2-hour walking tour that will explore the lives of the people who lived in Dublin’s inner city from the Georgian Period to the middle of the last century.<\/p>\n

Meeting point is at the entrance of the Four Courts Dublin. The tour is free but donations are welcome and booking is required via email to jsfolkloregirl024@gmail.com or – if you can’t book beforehand – just show up on the day.<\/p>\n

The Ecuadorian community in Ireland is hosting a Fundraising Cultural event on Monday. Admission is free, but places are limited. Proceeds will be used to help the victims of the earthquake in Ecuador which happened on 16 April 2016.<\/p>\n

It is not clear if us normal people are invited to this event or not, but I wasn’t able to find any further information about that. Reading between the lines, though, it seems that we are not really welcome there.<\/p>\n

Michael D. Higgins will unveil a plaque naming the East Link Bridge “Tom Clarke Bridge”. Thomas J. Clarke was one of the first signatory of the Proclamation in 1916. A Defence Forces colour party will be attening and a Dublin Fire Brigade piper will play. Irish traditional music group \u2018Laeg\u2019 will also provide music.<\/p>\n

Since the bridge is now owned by Dublin City, I would be a lot more impressed by an announcement that using the bridge will be free in the future. But I think we will be waiting a long long time for that.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

Admission is free, with a suggested donation of EUR 5. The website clearly says that there is no entry fee, but – and that makes a lot of sense – that your donations are very much appreciated (Musicians need to pay for rent and food too!) First Wednesday – Free Entrance to OPW Heritage Sites<\/h2>\n

Entry charges at nearly all OPW Heritage sites are waived once a month, on the “First Wednesday”. The Office of Public Works (OPW), who looks after the state owned heritage sites, wants to encourage people to visit the historic sites that it manages and has therefore started this great initiative in 2011.<\/p>\n

Most OPW managed sites can already be visited for free (e.g. Farmleigh House, Phoenix Park, National Botanic Gardens, Pearse Museum, etc), but the sites that normally charge a fee will be free every first Wednesday as well. In the (extended) Greater Dublin Area this means you can visit the following sites for free:
\n+ Dublin Castle, State Apartments
\n+ Kilmainham Gaol
\n+ The Casino, Marino
\n+ Rathfarnham Castle
\n+ Br\u00fa na B\u00f3inne Visitor Centre at Newgrange
\n+ Glendalough Visitor Centre in Wicklow<\/p>\n

As you can imagine, this event is very popular and therefore it is strongly recommended to arrive early at the venues. Once the day’s tickets are given out, you will not get access anymore. Most venues start handing out tickets in the morning for visits throughout the day.
\nDublin Castle facilitates continuous access for self-guided tours, so you might have to queue a bit and at some stage the queue will close, but you don’t have to “fight” for tickets.

\nLast month at the April First Wednesday quite a number of people were surprised or even shocked that Kimainham Gaol did charge the usual entry charge. This happened because they were told by the OPW that they are NOT taking part in the “First Wednesday” system anymore with immedaite effect. Many people told me about their experience and I contacted the OPW and sent them a submission asking for the restoration of the free access to Kilmainham Gaol from the May Wednesday. I am very happy to say that the OPW listened to the input they got. The Kilmainham Gaol is added to the list of free sites again!

\nPlease note: If you book tickets for Kilmainham Gaol online for that day, the tickets will NOT be free, but if you go to the Gaol tickets are free as long as they are available.<\/p>\n

IMPORTANT Update on 03 May:<\/p>\n

The OPW changed the First Wednesday PDF document on the front page of their website www.heritageireland.ie<\/a> on 26 April and in the new version of that document it said that Kilmainham Gaol will be free when you arrive at the site, but not for on-line bookings. This is understandable and no problem and luckily a clarification was provided. On Tuesday (03 May) I checked again and all was still the same, but to be on the safe side, I rang the Dublin sites and to my surprise, I was told that Kilmainham Gaol was taken OFF the list of free sites on “First Wednesday”. When I pointed out that the Heritage Ireland website clearly said something different, I was told that only on Friday, the arrangement was changed and the website would be updated during the Tuesday. At around 12:00 that finally happened and the new document now does not list Kilmainham Gaol anymore.<\/p>\n

After that experience I also rang Dublin Castle and Rathfarnham Castle. The people at Dublin Castle told that they are NOT admitting people continously anymore, but instead hand out a small number of free tickets for the timeslots throughout the day. Not sure if that is a better solution! If you arrive at 09:00 you might be happy to queue for a while, but getting a ticket for 15:30 is not necessatily the better way of doing it.
\nRathfarnham Castle also confirmed that they will waive the admission charges this Wednesday, but they told me that this will be the last First Wednesday for them.
\nI get the impression that this all has to do with the new or to be formed government. First Wednesday was introduced by the minister who was in charge of the OPW and since there is no full minister (only an acting minister) and a future minister might have different plans, the OPW is going back to their default position, which means that admission is NOT free in these sites.<\/p>\n

It’s a big pity, but it might be worth lobbying the next minister with responsibility for the OPW in the new cabinet to continue the First Wednesday!<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

Ireland introduces Free Legal Aid for everybody! – …as it seems
\n<\/strong><\/p>\n

Some big news: Free Health services for everyone is something the government promised for years, but it didn’t happen. Instead – in a total surprise move – free legal aid for everyone was introduced in April. …we just weren’t told about it yet!<\/p>\n

“Free Legal aid” means that the state covers the cost for solicitor\/barrister and all other legal cost and this route is available to people with limited financial means to ensure that not only wealthy people can get justice, but that also poor people can defend themselves when they are accused of something.<\/p>\n

It is a very fair concept and I don’t think that anybody could have an issue with the concept of it.<\/p>\n

The question about “Who can get it?”, however, can be a more controversial one, but it seems that this problem has been removed now because it emerged that a member of the Irish Parliament, who is on a salary of approximately EUR 90,000 per year PLUS significant expenses can get free legal aid and if he can get it, then the majority of people in Ireland (who earn a lot less than him) MUST also be eligible for it. Right?<\/p>\n

Anti Austerity Alliance TD Paul Murphy is accused of falsely imprisoning Tanaiste Joan Burton during a water charges protest in November 2014 and he has applied for free legal aid on the grounds that he can’t afford the court costs. Judge Melanie Greally from the Dublin Circuit Criminal Court has decided that based on his average weekly income, he will get free legal aid! :-O<\/p>\n

How can that be the case for someone who has a monthly salary of EUR 4000? Well, Murphy has an agreement with his party that he only gets EUR 1,800 (after tax) per month and that the party can keep the rest.<\/p>\n

So the money that arrives in his bank account is genuinely quite low, BUT this is a voluntary arrangement that he has with his party and herein lies the problem!<\/p>\n

Imagine if you had a voluntary arrangement with your parents or spouse or a friend to give them more than half of your monthly salary (assuming you were lucky enough to earn 4k), do you you think a judge would also have sympathy with you? I don’t think so!<\/p>\n

And even more so in this case, it means that you and I will pay for Paul Murphy’s legal aid (because taxes will pay for it) and his party can continue pocketing his salary, so we are indirectly funding his party! Doesn’t sound right!! We are talking about approximately EUR 50,000!<\/p>\n

The case he has to defend himself in is somewhat irrelevant in this situation, but if we looked at what he is accused of then it becomes even more questionable if he should receive a cent of tax payers money and it even makes you wonder if he is fit to be a TD: Tanaiste Joan Burton came from an event in a school in Tallaght and was on her way to a church for the rest of the event, when a protest against water charges blocked her car in and “imprisoned” her in her car for about 2 hours.<\/p>\n

Protesting is a legal right, but stopping someone’s movements against their will is not. It was a stupid and unjustified action. No serious harm was done to anyone and you could argue that bringing him to court is a bit of an overreaction, but unfortunately there are no other means to penalise someone who misbehaves.<\/p>\n

The real bad news is that free legal aid has NOT been introduced for everyone, instead only someone who could afford to pay from his own pocket and who knowingly broke the law, will get the money paid by you and me!<\/p>\n
