This weekend is the REAL anniversary of the Easter Rising 1916 and consequently there are a number of events taking place organised by political and union-related groupings. The GPO will see at least FOUR events in Sunday that all are not directly related. So O’Connell Street will be slightly mad, but with less culture and more protest than on Easter Monday, it seems.<\/p>\n

Somewhat quieter but always interesting and worth a visit will be the Dublin Flea Market. I also like the sound of the Fingal 1916 Commemorations, even with a Fireworks Display.<\/p>\n

Red 1916 Postboxes are interactive<\/h2>\n
\n

I only realised that last week and in case you missed it as well, I want to tell you today about the Red interactive 1916 postboxes in Dublin! To promote the (unfortunately relatively expensive – EUR 10) GPO Witness History exhibition in the GPO,<\/p>\n

An Post painted nine postboxes in Dublin red<\/a> as they were in 1916. In addition the postboxes carry a keyword and if you send this keyword via Freetext to 50100, a link to a short video about 1916 events at this location will be sent to you.<\/p>\n

The postbox locations are: Royal College of Surgeons, St Stephen\u2019s Green; Grafton Street; Liberty Hall; Dun Laoghaire Pier; Mount Street; Haddington Road; Four Courts; O\u2019Connell Street and Father Matthew Hall in Church Street.<\/p>\n

The campaign will run until May.<\/p>\n

Here are some of the keywords, so that you won’t have to go to all 9 postboxes: EDEN at Liberty Hall, STEPHENS at the Royal College of Surgeons, MOUNT at Mount Street. Send the keyword to 50100 and a message will be sent back to you.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n

Let us be counted – Census 2016<\/h2>\n
\n

Sunday 24 April is the key date for the Census 2016. The statistical snapshot of the country will be taken on that evening, but don’t worry, the form won’t self-detect when you fill it in. It doesn’t HAVE to be on Sunday evening, just describe the situation as it was on Sunday evening.<\/p>\n

The census form has a few other interesting aspects: Oddly, the statisticians want to know your name. This doesn’t make much sense, but we are assured that no cross-linking will be done with other databases in case you have something to hide. Some of the questions on the form seem a little outdated and that is because they were taken from the last census in 2011. Only one question got changed: The marital status question.<\/p>\n

If you are not too sure how to fill in a certain section you can either ask the person who will collect your form OR you can make a “best effort attempt” in answering. So don’t panic, just do your best and answer what you think is right. A number of people have mentioned already and you might have read that elsewhere that the question about your religion is NOT a question about what your parents decided for you but how you feel today about it. So tick what religion you feel is yours TODAY, not how you were, for example, baptised.<\/p>\n

There is one aspect about the census that I find quite nonsensical: If a member of your household is not in Ireland on Sunday night, then – according to census rules – that person has to sign a declaration that he\/she was absent and where he\/she was, but after that no details will be captured. I think the form should be filled in based on what NORMALLY is the case. So if “Jim” is in London for the weekend but lives in your household every other day of the year, in my opinion he should be listed as if he was here, It saves you the “absence declaration” and is more relevant for future planning based on the statistics than the fact that he was away for a weekend.<\/p>\n

By the way, the Census phone number is 1850 201604 and in their ignorance, the Central Statistics Office claims that this is a “LoCall” number, implying that the cost for calling this number are lower than the cost for calling a geographical number, but this is – as we know – all incorrect since mobile plans with included minutes exist. Ringing 1890 and 1850 numbers is ALWAYS more expensive if you are on a plan with included minutes than ringing a 01 number. I wish companies informed themselves better!<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n

Block T<\/a>, the arts space that was based at Smithfield Plaza\/Haymarket, had to leave their building at the end of March because the lease was not extended, but unlike other creative spaces (like Mabos, Moxie Studios and the Joinery), they luckily found a new home in Basin View, Dublin 8 and are currently refurbishing the place.<\/p>\n

For all the refurbishment work and to move and restart the operation in the new place, they are looking for financial support and if you want to help their fundraising efforts, you can do so here<\/a>.<\/p>\n

Spring Into Heritage – Events Programme – Dun Laoghaire Rathdown<\/h2>\n

The “Spring into Heritage 2016” programme, is a series of free guided tours over the next 10 weeks from 21 March until 29 May in Dun Laoghaire Rathdown. It is a great programme that gives you a chance to learn more about the history of this part of greater Dublin. The National Maritime Museum, the Dalkey Castle & Heritage Centre and a 1916 Graves tour in Deansgrange Cemetery were added new this year and there are also tours of the Oratory on Library Road in Dun Laoghaire, Cabinteely House and Marlay House.<\/p>\n

1916 Sackville Street: Remembering 262 Civilians Through Art<\/h2>\n

There were more civilians killed in the 1916 Easter Rising than Irish Volunteers or British soldiers. Of the 485 people who died, 262 were civilians. These men, women and children have no memorial and lie in graves, some forgotten.<\/p>\n

The objective of the 1916 Sackville Street Art Project is to hold an exhibition to commemorate the lives of these ordinary civilians that were killed in the 1916 Easter Rising. Schools, educational groups, youth groups and individuals were invited to create a 3D house from any art form to represent a civilian that was killed during the 1916 Rising, and where possible, to provide a brief historical profile of that civilian and\/or the art project.<\/p>\n

Little Stories, Little Prints – Exhibition<\/h2>\n

Fifty Printmakers from eight printmaking studios around Ireland were invited by The Leinster Printmaking Studio, Clane, Co. Kildare to create \u2018little prints\u2019 on \u2018little known events or incidents\u2019 during or around the time of the 1916 Rising and the exhibition will tour the Dublin Libraries in 2016.<\/p>\n

Each library displaying the exhibition will host a workshop in basic printmaking. Participants will be invited to illustrate an incident\/artefact of their choice. A small selection of the resulting work may be added to the website and may be included in the display in the library. Please check with the library for date and time of their respective workshop.<\/p>\n

The exhibition “Field Test – Radical Adventures in Future Farming” (11 Mar – 05 Jun 2016) in the Science Gallery is exploring how farming will look like in the future and what new developments will change farming so that we can deal with the global food challenges.<\/p>\n

From Farm Cyborgs (for example a Virtual Reality environment for chicken so that they can think they are free range), via odd, unique and forward looking foods (e.g. insects for improving your protein intake); growth houses for your home; very different seeds (e.g. beans that taste like beef) to the “LOCI Food Lab” (outside near the entrance to the Science Gallery) where you can get a customised snack, the exhibition has a lot of interesting exhibits that revealing, intriguing or surprising.<\/p>\n

Like all Science Gallery exhibitions, FIELD TEST is suitable for all ages with a particular focus on the age group of 15-25, but I would say that chilren from 10 years of age can understand the whole exhibition if they get some additional explanations and there are even some exhibits that would work for younger children.<\/p>\n

When you go to see the exhibition, get help from the Science Gallery mediators! They are helpers (usually students or graduates) that know the whole exhibition inside out and are very happy to help with a lot more information than the little labels at the exhibits can provide. Use their excellent service!<\/p>\n

The Science Gallery has very visitor friendly opening hours of Tue-Fri 12:00-20:00 and Sat+Sun 12:00-18:00.

The exhibition “Field Test – Radical Adventures in Future Farming” (11 Mar – 05 Jun 2016) in the Science Gallery is exploring how farming will look like in the future and what new developments will change farming so that we can deal with the global food challenges.<\/p>\n

From Farm Cyborgs (for example a Virtual Reality environment for chicken so that they can think they are free range), via odd, unique and forward looking foods (e.g. insects for improving your protein intake); growth houses for your home; very different seeds (e.g. beans that taste like beef) to the “LOCI Food Lab” (outside near the entrance to the Science Gallery) where you can get a customised snack, the exhibition has a lot of interesting exhibits that revealing, intriguing or surprising.<\/p>\n

Like all Science Gallery exhibitions, FIELD TEST is suitable for all ages with a particular focus on the age group of 15-25, but I would say that chilren from 10 years of age can understand the whole exhibition if they get some additional explanations and there are even some exhibits that would work for younger children.<\/p>\n

When you go to see the exhibition, get help from the Science Gallery mediators! They are helpers (usually students or graduates) that know the whole exhibition inside out and are very happy to help with a lot more information than the little labels at the exhibits can provide. Use their excellent service!<\/p>\n

The Science Gallery has very visitor friendly opening hours of Tue-Fri 12:00-20:00 and Sat+Sun 12:00-18:00.

“Reclaim the Vision of 1916” is the main event on Sunday. It is a march from Merrion Square to the GPO, where there will be music, poetry and dance. Assembly at Merrion Square will be at 14:00 and the march starts at 14:40. The route will be from Merrion Square to Westland Row, then Pearse Street, D’Olier Street and then on to O’Connell Bridge.<\/p>\n

From 15:00 there will be entertainment on a stage at the GPO with actor Adrian Dunbar hosting a festival of music, dance and readings.<\/p>\n

Actor Stephen Rea, Fionnuala Flanagan, Panti Bliss and Stephen Murphy will give readings. Musician Donal Lunny will play a piece he composed solely for the occasion. Singers Don Baker, Frances Black and Damien Dempsey and Sib\u00e9al N\u00ed Chasaide will perform. Fingal (North Coutny Dublin) celebrates their 1916 Commemoration this Sunday on the correct anniversary date of the Easter Rising.<\/p>\n

The events will start with a parade through Swords’ Main Street at 16:45 that will include the raising of the Flag, reading of the Proclamation, bugler playing “Reveille”, piper playing “Piper’s Lament” and a wreath laying. The parade will then continue to the Town Park.<\/p>\n

In the town park there will be band performances from The Black Raven Pipe Band, St Maur\u2019s Pipe Band, St Lawrence Pipe Band, St Patrick\u2019s Pipe & Reed Band, The Communications Workers Union Band and Dublin 15 Brass Band. In addition a choir performance from Enchiriadis Treis (Malahide Choir) and a poetry reading by Loreto Secondary School Balbriggan will take place.<\/p>\n

Just before 21:00 a Fireworks Display in Swords Town Park will conclude the event.<\/p>\n

On 24 April 1916, Easter Monday, twenty-two year old Kathleen King (n\u00e9e Murphy) learned of the launch of the Rebellion via a phone call from her brother Paddy. She began to record a daily diary of \u2018Dublin\u2019s Eventful Weeks as We Heard Them\u2019. Full of local interest about food shortages, the difficulty gaining a pass into Dublin from Kingstown and rumours of local fighting in Cabinteely and elsewhere, the diary is a marvellous snapshot of a turbulent period.<\/p>\n

The book “M\u00e9xico ins\u00f3lito en Europa” (The Unknown of Mexico in Europe) by Miguel Gleason is the result of research and audiovisual documentation that lasted more than 12 years, with the participation of several European and Mexican specialists.<\/p>\n

Miguel Gleason was born in Mexico City (1962). He completed a Degree in Communications from the Universidad Iberoamericana. Gleason is the founder of the Mexico in Europe Association.<\/p>\n

The Contemporary Music Centre Salon Series 2016 will feature Redmond O’Toole. who will perform a concert on his 8 string guitar.<\/p>\n

Redmond O\u2019Toole is recognised as one of the most distinctive and original guitarists of his generation. He was the first to adopt Paul Galbraith\u2019s \u2018Brahms guitar\u2019. This groundbreaking instrument and technique uses an 8-string guitar in the position of a cello.<\/p>\n

The Nepal Ireland society is organizing a Nepal Conference in Dublin on Saturday 30 April 2016. The Nepal Embassy London, Action Aid Ireland and Engineers Without Borders Ireland are working with the Nepal Ireland Society.<\/p>\n

The main objective of this conference is to build on the relationships forged as a result of many Irish organisations collaborating successfully to help in the Nepal Recovery Process after the devastating earthquake last year.<\/p>\n

There will be talks about the current status in Nepal and the challenges ahead and there will be networking opportunities, round table discussions and open discussions.<\/p>\n

Framleigh House Writer-in-Residence Lia Mills presents “THE STATE WE\u2019RE IN”, is a fictional panel debate. It takes place in 2026 and is about a Social Contract (The Fair Share) which has been incorporated in the New Irish Constitution of 2016, for a 10 year trial period. Costly social commitments have had to be counterbalanced by zero-tolerant measures to contain Public Expenditure.<\/p>\n

The audience will have an opportunity to participate in this entertaining political satire written by Gerard Dalton and performed by Umbrella Theatre Company.<\/p>\n

Just ruin it for everybody! – Nonsensical Compensation Case
\n<\/strong><\/p>\n

Ireland has a serious compensation problem and NOTHING is done about it. But hopefully shocking cases like this one will EVENTUALLY get a government to fix this stupid situation. But what happened?<\/p>\n

A 59-year old woman (Teresa Wall from Swords) went for a hill walk on the Wicklow Way in August 2013. Because she wasn’t careful enough, she tripped and fell on her knee. It seemingly was a bad fall that required a few stitches, but nothing was broken and no long-term pain or damage has been reported. Similar situations have happened MANY times before and if you go hillwalking or mountain climbing or do any other rough-ish outdoor sport\/exercise, you should know that you can get injured.<\/p>\n

In this case, the woman was walking on a “board walk” that is made up of old railway sleepers. The board walk is there to protect the flora and fauna on the mountain, but also to help walkers get over boggy\/marshy\/wet stretches. The railway sleepers are made of wood and they suffer from the wet and wind and were “badly rotted”. Well, what would normal people do? Be EXTRA careful in the same way as you would be extra careful on bad ground. And if they fall? They get up again and sort out the damage, but they are NOT running to the courts!<\/p>\n

Teresa Wall wanted money! She sued the National Parks and Wildlife Service and unfortunately she wasn’t told to get lost, but instead judge Jacqueline Linnane outrageously awarded her EUR 40,000….for a few stitches on the knee! Unbelievable!<\/p>\n

The woman claimed that she walked “all around the world” for 40 years, that she ran half-marathons on a weekly basis and that she had climbed in the Himalayas to the base camp on Mount Everest. She also claimed that the injury meant that she now could no longer hill climb or run marathons.<\/p>\n

What do you think mountain climbers get who get injured or even killed on Mount Everest? Do they sue Nepal? Or maybe the creator of the mountain? They sure won’t! And if something bad had happened on her climb in the Himalayas she wouldn’t have received a cent.<\/p>\n

And what is the ridiculous amount of 40k for that judge Linnane so generously gave away of not-her-own-money?<\/p>\n

Now, accidents and compensations happen all the time, but why is this one such a significant case? See, the result of it is that anybody else who gets a little scratch on a walk in the Wicklow Mountains or any other outdoor activity area in Ireland on private or public ground will be able to sue for the most ridiculous reasons. And for that reason we will see more “DO NOT ENTER” signs and wonderful walks like the Wicklow Way might be closed for the public.<\/p>\n

The negative follow-on effect thanks to Teresa Wall and Jacqueline Linnane’s actions is not yet comprehensible, but will most likely be HUGE!!<\/p>\n

This has to be changed! Crazy claims like this should be thrown out of court and even where compensation is paid, it should be based on a predetermined compensation “price list” as it is done already in many other countries to take this total randomness our of judges decisions.<\/p>\n

An example for leg-related injuries from the German claims table is here<\/a>. If you translate it with Google Translate or something similar or if you are able to read German, you will be able to see that the money paid for a light injury (dog bite with car to thigh fracture) is EUR 450-5900. For a middle severity injury which results in a severe disability and reduction in earning capability of 60% (That’s quite serious!!) is up to EUR 65,000, but that is FAR FAR worse than what happened on Wicklow Way.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n
