Hi all!<\/p>\n

With super weather on St. Patrick’s Day we were spoiled and no matter if you did go to the parade or if you had better things to do, it was a great day. The St. Patrick’s Festival will continue this weekend with the Treasure Hunt and the Big Day Out. They are good events and entirely family friendly!<\/p>\n

Looking at the whole programme of the St. Patrick’s Day Festival, some might wonder if the organisers just adjusted the dates a little and essentially re-cycled the programme from the last few years and it is indeed becoming a little “same old, same old”. None of the events are bad events (some details could be improved, but in general the events are ok), but having exactly the same events every year with no significant change would suggest that maybe some new ideas could be helpful to rejuvenate the St. Patrick’s Day Festival. And there is another lesson in this short video clip. This week the picking of some events that I will go to\/recommend is relatively easy. I love the St. Patrick’s Festival Treasure Hunt and strongly recommend it. Discover parts of Dublin that you probably have not visited\/seen for a long time! The weather won’t be as good as on St. Patrick’s Day, but no rain is forecasted.<\/p>\n

And on Sunday, you will definitely find me at the Big Day Out on the streets around Merrion Square and in the park. The sun will come out on Sunday, so that’s great! :-)<\/p>\n

The weak is a little quieter in general. After St. Patrick’s Day and before Easter, that is not overly surprising, but you won’t have to be bored. There is still plenty happening!<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

Reflecting the Rising – Huge Easter Rising Event – Registration required<\/h2>\n

On Easter Monday (28 March), Dublin will be buzzing with more than 300 events to commemorate the Easter Rising. There will be talks, workshops, gigs & concerts, performances, children activities, a parade and lots more all over Dublin’s City Centre.<\/p>\n

The events are free, but registration is required for most events and you should register as soon as possible, because tickets will go very fast.<\/p>\n

Spring into Heritage – Dun Laoghaire Rathdown<\/h2>\n

The “Spring into Heritage 2016” programme, is a series of free guided tours over the next 10 weeks from 21 March until 29 May in Dun Laoghaire Rathdown. It is a great programme that gives you a chance to learn more about the history of this part of greater Dublin. The National Maritime Museum, the Dalkey Castle & Heritage Centre and a 1916 Graves tour in Deansgrange Cemetery were added new this year and there are also tours of the Oratory on Library Road in Dun Laoghaire, Cabinteely House and Marlay House.<\/p>\n

Wild Postcard Project – Children’s Art Competition<\/h2>\n
\n

The Wild Postcard Project is a competition for kids and teens (Age 5-18) whereby the participants create artwork depicting Ireland’s biodiversity.<\/p>\n

Biodiversity is all living things on Earth, including animals, plants, micro-organisms, and genes; and the environments and ecosystems within which they are found. A survey several years ago in the UK found that the general public is largely unfamiliar with the term \u2018biodiversity\u2019 (with many respondents thinking it to be a type of washing powder). So something has to be done about it and the Wild Postcard Project took the initiative!<\/p>\n

Entries (on size A4 paper or smaller) have to be sent before 15 April to Wild Postcard Project, c\/o Botany Department, Trinity College Dublin, Dublin 2. Full competition details are available at http:\/\/www.wildpostcardproject.com<\/a><\/p>\n

A jury will select the top 10 pieces of art, which will then be converted into postcards so that they can be shared around the world easily. Fifty Printmakers from eight printmaking studios around Ireland were invited by The Leinster Printmaking Studio, Clane, Co. Kildare to create \u2018little prints\u2019 on \u2018little known events or incidents\u2019 during or around the time of the 1916 Rising and the exhibition will tour the Dublin Libraries in 2016.<\/p>\n

Each library displaying the exhibition will host a workshop in basic printmaking. Participants will be invited to illustrate an incident\/artefact of their choice. A small selection of the resulting work may be added to the website and may be included in the display in the library. Please check with the library for date and time of their respective workshop.<\/p>\n

The Dublin Bay Prawn Festival is back from Friday 18 March until Sunday 20 March and you might be surprised to read about it already.<\/p>\n

It indeed is more than a month earlier than in previous years AND it overlaps with the St. Patrick’s Day Festival. So this is either an inspired move or a really bad decision. Maybe the St. Patrick’s Day Festival doesn’t interfere too much, but for me the the Dublin Bay Prawn Festival is definitely a good weather festival. With March being still a good bit colder, I am not sure if bringing it forward is scuh a great idea. But at least Sunday is meant to be sunny, so maybe the organisers were really lucky.<\/p>\n

The festival starts every day at 12:00 and there will be cooking demonstrations and live music among many other (free and non-free) events. The full programme is here:<\/p>\n

The exhibition “Field Test – Radical Adventures in Future Farming” (11 Mar – 05 Jun 2016) in the Science Gallery is exploring how farming will look like in the future and what new developments will change farming so that we can deal with the global food challenges.<\/p>\n

From Farm Cyborgs (for example a Virtual Reality environment for chicken so that they can think they are free range), via odd, unique and forward looking foods (e.g. insects for improving your protein intake); growth houses for your home; very different seeds (e.g. beans that taste like beef) to the “LOCI Food Lab” (outside near the entrance to the Science Gallery) where you can get a customised snack, the exhibition has a lot of interesting exhibits that revealing, intriguing or surprising.<\/p>\n

Like all Science Gallery exhibitions, FIELD TEST is suitable for all ages with a particular focus on the age group of 15-25, but I would say that chilren from 10 years of age can understand the whole exhibition if they get some additional explanations and there are even some exhibits that would work for younger children.<\/p>\n

When you go to see the exhibition, get help from the Science Gallery mediators! They are helpers (usually students or graduates) that know the whole exhibition inside out and are very happy to help with a lot more information than the little labels at the exhibits can provide. Use their excellent service!<\/p>\n

The Science Gallery has very visitor friendly opening hours of Tue-Fri 12:00-20:00 and Sat+Sun 12:00-18:00.

The Dublin Bay Prawn Festival is back from Friday 18 March until Sunday 20 March and you might be surprised to read about it already.<\/p>\n

It indeed is more than a month earlier than in previous years AND it overlaps with the St. Patrick’s Day Festival. So this is either an inspired move or a really bad decision. Maybe the St. Patrick’s Day Festival doesn’t interfere too much, but for me the the Dublin Bay Prawn Festival is definitely a good weather festival. With March being still a good bit colder, I am not sure if bringing it forward is scuh a great idea. But at least Sunday is meant to be sunny, so maybe the organisers were really lucky.<\/p>\n

The festival starts every day at 12:00 and there will be cooking demonstrations and live music among many other (free and non-free) events. The full programme is here:<\/p>\n

The exhibition “Field Test – Radical Adventures in Future Farming” (11 Mar – 05 Jun 2016) in the Science Gallery is exploring how farming will look like in the future and what new developments will change farming so that we can deal with the global food challenges.<\/p>\n

From Farm Cyborgs (for example a Virtual Reality environment for chicken so that they can think they are free range), via odd, unique and forward looking foods (e.g. insects for improving your protein intake); growth houses for your home; very different seeds (e.g. beans that taste like beef) to the “LOCI Food Lab” (outside near the entrance to the Science Gallery) where you can get a customised snack, the exhibition has a lot of interesting exhibits that revealing, intriguing or surprising.<\/p>\n

Like all Science Gallery exhibitions, FIELD TEST is suitable for all ages with a particular focus on the age group of 15-25, but I would say that chilren from 10 years of age can understand the whole exhibition if they get some additional explanations and there are even some exhibits that would work for younger children.<\/p>\n

When you go to see the exhibition, get help from the Science Gallery mediators! They are helpers (usually students or graduates) that know the whole exhibition inside out and are very happy to help with a lot more information than the little labels at the exhibits can provide. Use their excellent service!<\/p>\n

The Science Gallery has very visitor friendly opening hours of Tue-Fri 12:00-20:00 and Sat+Sun 12:00-18:00.

The Trinity 360 Project consists of a newly commissioned work of spatial music for Trinity Orchestra, the Cue Quartet and an eight-channel loudspeaker array, to be performed on campus on 08 April 2016. In this talk, composer Enda Bates discussed the inspiration behind this multi-movement work, the 360 audio and video recording techniques which will be used to record the performance, and how the commencements bell in the Trinity campanile (which will also be used in the concert) influenced the harmonic language of the piece.<\/p>\n

In the “Political & Social Life In Dublin In 1916 Lunchtime Talks Series” the fourth and final talk will be “Dublin Protestants and the 1916 Rising” with Martin Maguire.<\/p>\n

This talk will consider the reaction of Dublin Protestants to the Easter Rising. While for most of them the Rising only served to confirm them in their strong unionism and loyalty to the Crown, a small number of young Protestant men and women (e.g. Harry Nicholls and Kathleen Lynn), who saw themselves as bearers of a radical dissenting tradition, participated as republican rebels.<\/p>\n

Dr Martin Maguire is a historian and senior lecturer in the Department of Humanities, Dundalk Institute of Technology. He has published many articles and book essays on the history of Irish Protestantism, with a particular focus on the workings of social class identities within Irish Protestant culture.<\/p>\n

Admission is free, with a suggested donation of EUR 5. The website clearly says that there is no entry fee, but – and that makes a lot of sense – that your donations are very much appreciated (Musicians need to pay for rent and food too!) Be generous after the gig if you liked it, but if someone wants to charge an admission charge, please point out that the “rules” as described on their website are like I have explained.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

Good Friday in Ireland<\/h2>\n

Good Friday is a very important day in Ireland. It is SO important that it even has its own laws. It is also a confusing day.<\/p>\n

It is confusing because it is a bank holiday, but NOT a public holiday, so most companies work normally, but banks don’t. Why it wasn’t declared a public holiday is surprising, considering that the day was made so “special” through other laws. “Catholic Ireland” still reigns, as long as these old laws (from 1927) that were totally influenced by the catholic church are still in effect.<\/p>\n

The laws forbid the sale of alcohol on Good Friday and therefore all pubs and many restaurants close on that day. The restaurants could stay open, because there are exceptions to the law and these exceptions are as stupid as the law itself.<\/p>\n

If you are travelling, you are allowed to buy alcohol, so the restaurants in Irish Trains, in airports, railway stations, on ferries and in hotels (only with food) can sell beer and wine etc. So, you can get alcohol in Connolly Station if you are travelling, but not if you stay put! So to be allowed to drink you need a ticket that is for a minimum distance of 40km. How stupid!<\/p>\n

If you are on a ship in Ireland (even on the canals), you are also allowed to buy alcohol. Why? Nobody knows!<\/p>\n

More silly loopholes? Sure! Go to a play in a theatre and you are allowed to drink your pint. But go to a reading\/gig\/concert and you are not allowed! Nonsensical! And the last one: If you gamble you are allowed to drink, but seemingly only at the dog races.<\/p>\n

Don’t get me wrong, I am NOT of the opinion that alcohol is a basic food item and a day (or more) without alcohol is definitely a good thing for everybody, but I am also totally against stupid laws. And I am against the influence of any religious organisation on a state. If someone wants to follow rules of a religious organisation in their own life, they should have the freedom to do so, but nobody else should be forced to follow these same rules.<\/p>\n

Mind you the reaction by the people to the laws is as nonsensical as the laws themselves: There will be long queues in Off license shops on Thursday night because panic sets in if the pubs are closed for one day. A societal addiction to alcohol<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

An international football match is on, but all pubs are closed because of Good Friday. Well, not all of them are closed: I found that the Woolshed Baa and Grill (Parnell Street) is open from 12:00-22:00 with live music from 15:00 and they will show the Ireland vs Switzerland match from 19:45.<\/p>\n

Imagine all the football fans that are coming over from Switzerland and want to enjoy Dublin a bit before and after the match and they find pubs and restaurants closed. Odd! And the other odd thing: In the Lansdowne Road Stadium (Aviva) the crowd will be able to buy alcohol, but nowhere else near the stadium.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

Easter Rising: Selective Storytelling?
\n<\/strong><\/p>\n

“Hagiography” is a biography that idolises its subjects and having written about a LOT of Easter Rising talks and events in the last few weeks, I am wondering lately if there is a bit of “hagiographing” going on in all these talks. The largest amount of talks was about the role of women in the Easter Rising and the other section of talks is about the leaders of the Rising. Unfortunately I didn’t get a chance to go to any of the talks yet, but reading the descriptions, it seems that (nearly) every speaker feels obliged to paint a heroic-ish picture of the participants in the Rising.<\/p>\n

For a historic treatment of an event it would be good to look at ALL aspects. And unfortunately, the immediate outcome of the Easter Rising was an unmitigated disaster. The surrender can’t have been the planned or preferred end of the Rising and it can’t have been the intention either to get so many of the leaders killed after the events. So where did they fail and why did they fail and who would have to take the responsibility for the failure of the Easter Rising? Bad planning? Bad execution? Too much idealism? Wrong assessment\/expectation of the British reaction? What could have been done differently to successfully achieve the goals that they had? Was it even possible to achieve them?<\/p>\n

I know all these questions could criticise the leaders of the Rising and that seems to be inappropriate this year. In hindsight, but only in hindsight!!!, we know that the sacrifice of the volunteers involved in 1916 achieved Ireland’s independence some years later, but that does not turn the Easter Rising itself into a success. The events in 1916 were an important trigger that lead to the the successful separation from Britain and it posthumously justified the Easter Rising, but it was still a failed operation if you look at the events in 1916 only.<\/p>\n

Discussing this wouldn’t have to dirty the reputation of the volunteers, but ignoring it unfortunately turns many of the talks into blinkered hagiographies.<\/p>\n
