Hi all!<\/p>\n

This edition is much too late again, but luckily a LITTLE earlier than in some weeks! I hope you enjoy it nevertheless and find lots of free events that interest you!<\/p>\n

It will be an interesting weekend after the election, it could (and probably will) change the political landscape and the power distribution in the Dail completely. We will find out a lot of details during the day on Saturday, but – depending on the number of re-counts required – the final results will only be clear early next week.<\/p>\n

The free events are continuing as if nothing has happened. At least for now! But there often are medium to long term effects from a change in the government configuration, because money will get distributed differently or budget cuts will happen. Unfortunately it is extremely rare that culture and arts will get a significant additional amount of money.<\/p>\n

Speaking of money (and I really don’t like doing it, but there is no avoiding!): For February we are currently 20 Euro short and Tuesday is already 01 March. In March money for the next EUR 190 bill has to be collected, so if you can, please help with a donation. Any amount is appreciated, but if you are looking for a guideline, then consider EUR 12 as explained in the next paragraph.<\/p>\n

This is my weekly appeal, but in some weeks I need to stress it more (see paragraph above) than in other weeks: Please don’t forget that there are two areas the Dublin Event Guide needs your continued help with every week: Your donations<\/a> help paying the bills for sending the Dublin Event Guide every week, so please help if you can. Just 1 Euro per month (12 Euro per year) would be great. Unfortunately not many subscribers are prepared to or able to help, so please don’t rely on others!<\/p>\n

And secondly: without you spreading the word we would have never reached 24,000 subscribers and 60,000 Facebook Likes. But it is just the start!! The goals are MUCH bigger than that! :-) Imagine if everyone just got ONE additional person to subscribe to the Dublin Event Guide (for Free Events). The New Form Theatre Company will perform The Divide from 29 February. “The Divide” is a romantic tragedy comedy that covers taboos within Western society. It shows a deeply religious devote Muslim woman torn from ambition and love for someone who is the forbidden fruit whilst at the same time showing the all too hidden human side of the elder lover.<\/p>\n

The Preview for the play will be on Monday 29 Feb at 20:00 (EUR 10 for all tickets) and the official run is from Tuesday 01 March until Saturday 05 March. Performances are at 20:00 with an extra performance on Sat 05 March at 14:00. Tickets are EUR 15\/10 and can be booked with the theatre by ringing 01-850 9000 or 089 966 9489. National Childrens’ Science Centre for Dublin<\/h2>\n
\n

After many many years of discussions and quite a number of different ideas that never materialised<\/a>, the National Children’s Science Centre “Exploration Station” has moved a big step closer to becoming reality. Let’s hope it will happen this time! The charitable trust “Irish Children’s Museum” is working on this for more than 17 years and a science museum (with a permanent exhibition) is really missing in Dublin. The wonderful Science Gallery with its four yearly temporary exhibitions is quite different, despite the fact that it also targets a similar age group.<\/p>\n

If the planning permission that was now submitted by the OPW will be granted, then the new Exploration Station<\/a> will take over the (currently empty) North Wing of the National Concert Hall and will add a big building with planetarium in Iveagh Gardens. The work on the National Concert Hall part will be funded by the state, but for the new build another EUR 13 mio have to be raised through philanthropic donations, foundations and corporations.<\/p>\n

IF planning permission is granted and IF the money can be raised and IF everything else goes according to plan, the new museum will open at the end of 2018.<\/p>\n

It is a great development in a quite good location. As I said, I hope we won’t get disappointed this time, but it is definitely not yet all done and dusted, a lot of hurdles and hiccups can still endanger the project. I haven’t seen any plans yet, but I hope the impact on the wonderful Iveagh Park will only be small, on the other hand, space is limited in the City Centre for any new development of that sort and maybe we have to sacrifice a bit of the park for the cultural and touristic improvement such a museum will bring to Dublin.<\/p>\n

ALERTS: Cancer causing Irish Tap Water and Johnson’s Baby Powder and Beer<\/h2>\n
\n

During the week, three new cancer warnings emerged:<\/p>\n

The most important one was about Irish tap water: The environmental pollutant Trihalomethane, which is cancer-causing, has been found in Irish tap water<\/a> in excessive amounts. It gets into the drinking water as a result of a reaction between organic materials (e.g. peaty soil) and chlorine, which is added by Irish Water as a disinfectant. 400,000 people in Ireland might be affected and environmental activist Erin Brockovich (her true story was the background to the film from 2000, called “Erin Brockovich” with Julia Roberts) has warned that this puts especially pregnant women in danger<\/a>.<\/p>\n

The second one was about Johnson’s Baby Powder<\/a> and came from a court case that determined that Johnson & Johnson knew since the 1980s that their talc-based baby powder carries a cancer risk. A woman who used it for many decades died of ovarian cancer and her illness was linked to the Baby Powder. There are over 1000 more cases filed in Missouri, USA and New Jersey, USA.<\/p>\n

And in Germany (it hasn’t made it into the News in Ireland yet!) it was found that Glyphosat, a Monsanto-manufactured pesticide that is suspected to cause cancer, was in 14 of the most popular beer brands in Germany. For drinking water the max glyphosat limit is 0.1 microgramme, but oddly there is no limit for beer. The lowest amount found in beer was 0.46 microgramme and the highest amount was a huge 29.74 microgramme per litre. All German media outlets<\/a> (in German) have reported extensively about it and the question is regularly thrown up if it is really cancer causing or not. An English language article is here<\/a>. The full results of the Umweltinstitut Munich measurements are here<\/a> (in German only). Since the same Monsanto-produced pesticides (e.g. Roundup) are used in Ireland and other countries, there is a high likelihood that similar results would be found in beers here.<\/p>\n

More dog-friendliness!<\/h2>\n

Since the MVP Pub in 29 Upper Clanbrassil Street was first forbidden to let dogs anymore and they then announced a few days later that they will ignore this<\/a> (at least for now) and will let you and your four-legged friends back in again, the focus was put on dog-friendly establishments.<\/p>\n

And it turns out that there is another place, a Caf\u00e9 that is also in Clanbrassil Street, that will let dogs in. In this case, the dog-friendliness is even expressed in the name. The Caf\u00e9 is called “Pupp” and is in 37 Lower Clanbrassil Street. Interesting that they are both in the same street! But it is great and I’d say if the two will be able to resist and HSE issues, there will be many more that will loosen their “No dogs!” policy.<\/p>\n

Fifty Printmakers from eight printmaking studios around Ireland were invited by The Leinster Printmaking Studio, Clane, Co. Kildare to create \u2018little prints\u2019 on \u2018little known events or incidents\u2019 during or around the time of the 1916 Rising and the exhibition will tour the Dublin Libraries in 2016.<\/p>\n

Each library displaying the exhibition will host a workshop in basic printmaking. Participants will be invited to illustrate an incident\/artefact of their choice. A small selection of the resulting work may be added to the website and may be included in the display in the library. The Five Lamps Arts Festival is a creative arts festival in the North Inner City that is packed with events and many of them are free events. Aengus Fanning was the editor of the Sunday Independent for 27 years until his death due to cancer in 2012.<\/p>\n

Patrick McDonnell who is the producer of the new play “The Divide<\/a>“, which will be on stage in the Sean O’Casey Theatre from 29 Feb – 05 March, is also the nephew of Aengus Fanning and he has organised a charity event as a tribute to Aengus Fanning. Local musicians will perform and the audience is invited to help raise funds for the cancer unit in the St. Luke’s Children’s Hospital. The tribute concert will precede the performance of the play “The Divide” on 01 March.<\/p>\n

Entry charges at nearly all OPW-managed Heritage sites in Ireland are waived once a month. The Office of Public Works (OPW) wants to encourage people to visit the historic sites that it manages and has therfore started this initiative in 2011.<\/p>\n

“Let’s Talk and Walk” are historical walking tours in Dublin that are organised by Dublin City. All walks are free, have a duration of 1.5-2hr and are lead by a historian.<\/p>\n

The 1916 Walk and Talk series will visit the main areas of action of the 1916 Rising, both in the city centre and the suburbs and the full programme is available in PDF format here<\/a>.<\/p>\n

The origins of the Dublin Pipers\u2019 Club are tied up with the Literary Revival, which focused interest on all aspects of Irish culture including music. The tours introduce the current exhibitions and also offer an interesting insight into the work of the artists.<\/p>\n

Beginning at Temple Bar Gallery + Studios, you will be introduced to the new solo exhibition Imitation of Life by Amie Siegel. Fianna Fail vs Fine Gael – No real difference, but big enemies!
\n<\/strong><\/p>\n

The election is over and at the time of writing this, the polling stations are just about to close so I have no idea yet, what the outcome of the election will be. BUT, we all have certain expectations and these expectations are usually influenced by the media reporting in the last few days and weeks.<\/p>\n

Most commentators expect the outcome to be a “hung” Dail. Hanging in this case is nothing bad or negative and it is a strong word for the situation that means nothing else that not one party or one previous coalition has a clear majority. Big deal! Just find new alliances and form a new coalition. Yes, that’s what most would think, but in Ireland things work a little different, because for some odd reason the two parties that ALWAYS have been the biggest parties in the Dail, really don’t get on with each other.<\/p>\n

Substantial difference of opinion? Different ideologies? Not at all! And that is the oddest thing about it! Fianna Fail and Fine Gael really have largely the same opinions about society, economy, justice and nearly all other areas of politics. Yes, there are some differences, but they are really quite small and sometimes you feel they disagree just to pretend that they have separate identities.<\/p>\n

So, why do two parties that have the same opinions not work together? Looking at this situation from the outside (or as a foreigner) really doesn’t show any reason for their opposition to each other. But if you ask that question in Ireland, most informed people will have an immediate answer and they will tell you that it goes back to the Irish Civil War.<\/p>\n

WHAT? So, the separation of these near-twins goes back more than 90 years and they still haven’t realised (or are struggling with the realisation) that they are more alike than different? Any coalition, Fianna Fail with the Greens in the previous Dail and Fine Gael with Labour in the just finishing Dail period HAS to be much more of a challenge than a coalition between Fianna Fail and Fine Gael. Do they not realise that?<\/p>\n

Seemingly they don’t! And so it could happen that if there will indeed be a “hung” Dail we will have sooner a re-election than a cooperation between these two oh so similar parties.<\/p>\n

(BTW: I am no suggesting that either of them or a coalition of the two is the best solution for Ireland. They both have not convinced in their periods of governing the country and with that in mind, putting two bad apples together wouldn’t create a yummy peach, it just would probably cause a bigger rotten fruit. The above article is more a reflection on the astonishing fact that they feel they can’t work together, 90 years after their disagreement. Imagine if that idiotic stubbornness was still in place in Northern Ireland! They would still kill each other!)<\/p>\n
