What a wonderful day we had last weekend at the Africa Day and the Soul Festival! I say “we”, because I know that MANY of you were at one or both of the festivals. Some of you are getting this Event Guide today the first time because you got a flyer from me last Sunday and have subscribed now to the e-mail and you are VERY welcome. :-)<\/p>\n
This week brings more festival (Maritime Festival) and in this week’s Dublin Event Guide for Free Events I have more competitions with great prizes than we had ever before. You should DEFINITELY check out the competition section, the prizes are amazing!<\/p>\n
Do you remember that I mentioned last week that the Gardiner Street Gospel Choir was singing at the Africa Day? Long term readers of this Event Guide know that I am involved with the Gospel Choir. I do the sound engineering at the weekly mass on a Sunday evening in Gardiner Street Church and I look after sound and all technical and most logistical issues at concerts and public performances. This wonderful Gardiner Street Gospel Choir – it is the BEST Gospel Choir in Ireland ;-) – has a concert coming up. The concert is on 06 June in the Helix in DCU and we need YOU to come to the concert. \nRaffael Abarca’s Lx Promotions is bringing the “The Shamans of Bulgaria” show to Dublin. Elitsa Todorava and Stoyan Yankoulov are the Master Percussionists performing in this show. Elitsa & Stoyan, a former choir singer of “Mystery voices” and a jazz drummer, took ancient rhythms, broke them down and created new captivating arrangements and compositions to accommodate an ensemble of their own haunting and blend authentic ethno folk with jazz & world music style through drumming and singing, creating a dramatic performance spectacle. \nThere is building work going on a number of street corners in Dublin AND when I first saw it the row of knee-high poles looked weird, but then I realised that this must be the long awaited Rent-a-bike scheme and since then I found the confirmation.

\nThe idea is really good and renting bikes for a while in Dublin would often be helpful and could change the way we perceive “public” transport in Dublin. But I have to admit that I am a bit sceptical. 400 bikes for 100 000s of people is not exactly a revolutionary development and then there is the big concern that the bikes are stolen as fast as all other bikes in Dublin. :-(<\/p>\n
\nDid you ever try to find out which bus to take from A to B and thought that the Dublin Bus website should be able to help you? I did and was shocked! There is no proper map information available on the Dublin Bus website that shows you the route a bus takes and unless you know your way around the streets and the parts of Dublin really well (preferably in Irish AND in English), it won’t be easy to find what you need.
\nUnless now, that is! By coincidence I came across a map site on the Internet, that shows all the bus routes on a Google Maps background. Brilliant idea and well done! (I am not sure if Dublin Bus has anything to do with it.) The site can be used of other maps as well, so you can build your own maps there. http:\/\/mkmap.com\/dublin<\/a><\/p>\n
\nThe Project Arts Centre in Temle Bar is looking for a number of native Spanish speakers, aged between 17 – 70 years, to take part in a one off performance.
\nVisual Artist Jon Mikel Euba is looking for 10 volunteers to take part in a performance for the Dublin instalment of If I Can\u2019t Dance I Don\u2019t Want to be Part of Your Revolution. Volunteers will be asked to sit on stage with the artist and, in turn, translate sections of text from Spanish to English.

\nThe MPhil. course in Music and Media Technologies, Trinity College presents MMT FEST09, the Music and Media Technologies Graduate Show. The Masters students will present a variety of work, including interactive installations, surround sound technologies, audiovisual pieces and a live performance of original electroacoustic and mixed media compositions. An exhibition showcasing interactive installations, audio spatialisation and surround sound systems will take place in the Joy Gallery from Thurs 28 – Sat 30 May from 12:00-20:00. Admission is free. \nFrom 29 May – 01 June the Docklands Maritime Festival will take place on the North and South Quays along the Liffey. From 12:00 on Friday until 18:00 on Monday you can visit the tall ships, listen to good music and eat tasty food.
\nThere is an Outdoor Market with more than 80 stands and lots of food stands, on a number of stages music will be performed and street entertainers will keep you amused. Some of the musical acts are Spraoi Drums, Orkestra Del Sol, Solo Flamenco (dance performance), Paprika Balkanicus, The Cockney Awkestra, Torann, Gypsy Jazz Quartet and The Swinging Bluecats.

\nThe Dockland Festival is a great festival and I definitely recommend it for everybody. The weather will be great over the weekend, so get out and venture down to the Liffey near the IFSC.<\/p>\n
\nThis June bank holiday sees the 3rd annual Battle for the Bay windfestival get under way, featuring the very best of Irish and international kitesurfers and windsurfers on Dollymount Strand, Clontarf on the way to Howth.
\nThe festival will feature freestyle competitions and course racing and is a fantastic opportunity for you to see what kitesurfering is all about. This year\u2019s festival will feature the presence of Alex Caizergues the fastest man across the water and triple world champion and Irish windsurfing speed champion John Kenny. Kitesurfing is one of the fastest growing if not the fastest growing watersport in the world and Dollymount is home to the biggest community of kitesurfers in Ireland. Last year\u2019s festival was a huge success and provided some great entertainment to all visitors. Between freestyle demonstrations and the comparatively new sport of kitesurf racing there is plenty of action and activity.
\nThis year\u2019s festival promises to be even bigger featuring action to suit everyone from young to old. The competitive schedule includes the Irish Kitesurfing Championship freestyle competitions which should see national champion Eamon Armstrong battle for the right to retain his title against young guns Sean Murphy and Ross Harte. This year will see the 2008 ladies\u2019 champion, Dominika Kupciw fight to defend her title against Aleks Bondareva, the 2007 ladies champion after last year\u2019s closely fought battles between the pair.
\nThe competitive part of the event takes place on Dollymount Strand from Sat 30 May (10:30-19:00) until Sun 31 May (10:00-18:00). And on Monday (like on most das of weekends) you can watch a number of kite surfers to free ride.

\nThe first Monday in June is a bank holiday in Ireland. Most shops are open, but you can’t always be certain and some shops close on the Sunday but re-open on Monday. This lack of structure might be a little odd to you if this is your first bank holiday in Ireland, but you will get used to it. :-) Coincidentally this year the June Bank Holiday is on the same day as other countries celebrate Pentecost, however this is not an official holiday in Ireland.

\nThe main event on the June Bank Holiday every year is the Women’s Mini Marathon. Many, many of you have trained hard for it and SOME of you ;-) had intended to train VERY hard and realise now that NEXT year they will achieve that goal better. :-P The staggering number of more than 40,000 women will take part in this 10km run for charity and this is allegedly the biggest event of its kind in the whole world. (I wonder if someone can confirm that!)
\nThe race starts at 15:00 at Merrion Square and goes along Mount Street, Northumberland Road to Ballsbridge, then passing by the RDS to Merrion Shopping Centre, then up Nutley Lane to RTE. Then to the UCD bridge where the route turns back towards the City Centre and passing through Donnybrook, following Lesson Street, the runners will go back to the finish at St. Stephen’s Green.
\nAs you can imagine, the impact for traffic will be significant. Cars and busses (incl the aircoach) will be diverted and you should plan a lot more time for your trip than usually.
\nBy the way, it will interest many that men are absolutely forbidden (according to the official rules) to take part. And if you have seen men in previous years running the 10km (usually in skirts and with wigs) then you have seen things that CAN’T be true. ;-)
\nRegistration for the event is closed now, but you can still join the fun by cheering on the runners. The weather forecast is very good and it should be a wonderful day for the run.

And the fifth poster is only imaginable in rural Ireland. :-) It is for a Laois\/Offaly candidate who seriously needs an image consultant. ;-) But he is said to sing well.
