Hi all!<\/p>\n

This week you will get what is probably the biggest Dublin Event Guide ever. There are soooo many events that I will have to publish it in the smart phone app and on the website first again and will then still add more events until all is covered. Only then I will send the e-mail version. It is not the perfect way to do it, but I think it is better than waiting until all is completed because then half of Saturday is already over.
\n[This is the final version with all events included. APOLOGIES for the crazy delay this week. It is getting worse and worse and I currently have no clue as to what to do to fix this problem. :-(( ]<\/p>\n

A huge junk of the events at the moment are 1916 talks. Some of them are really really interesting, but unfortunately some take place midday in a library far away. Pity that they are not all recorded and then made available as podcasts.<\/p>\n

But if you are not that interested in history, there are still plenty of other things going on. Have a look!<\/p>\n

And please don’t forget that there are two areas the Dublin Event Guide needs your continued help with every week: Your donations<\/a> help paying the bills for sending the Dublin Event Guide every week, so please help if you can. The Carnival Party that Real Events has organised last year brought 2600 people out and was a massive success and they are repeating all this again this year.<\/p>\n

It will take place in DTwo in Harcourt Street and there will be lots of entertainment during the night:
\nSamba & Pagode Band “Coisa D’ Preto”, Ax\u00e9 Band “LR Project”, Frevo performance, Samba Band “Morro 16”, Banda Som de Lata, DJs (Ronyx and Sagg), Samba Passistas, Special Guest Camila Black, Dance Animators and Miss Carnival Ireland 2016 (in association with The Studio).<\/p>\n

Ceili Fundraiser for Care4Calais<\/h2>\n

\nTeacher’s Club, 36 Parnell Square West, Dublin 1<\/p>\n

A fundraising Ceili (Irish Dancing) will take place in the Teacher’s Club and all proceeds will go to Care4Calais who provide food, books and household supplies etc to refugees living in the camp in Calais in France.<\/p>\n

A Ceili is a traditional Irish collective dance carried out to an accompaniment of traditional music. There will be a ceili ‘caller’ who will explain the dances and demonstrate them and easy dances will be chosen so that total beginners will be able to participate. The music will be provided by top class Irish Trad musicians.<\/p>\n

Admission is EUR 10 andy ou can pay at the door. There will be a full bar available.<\/p>\n

This new stage play tells the true story of Pete Best who drummed with The Beatles for two years and was mysteriously fired from the band a few weeks before they released their first single and took over the world. The play is directed by Stephen Kennedy and performed by Padraic McGinley and Jim Elliott.<\/p>\n

This could be the biggest merger of pub companies in the Irish history: The Mercantile Group and the Capital Bars Group have announced that they plan to merge.<\/p>\n

The Mercantile Group owns pubs and live music venues The Mercantile, Whelan’s, East Side Tavern, Opium, South William and restaurants The Green Hen, Pichet, Marcel’s, Le Petit Parisien and the Mercantile Hotel and the Lost Society night club.<\/p>\n

Fifty Printmakers from eight printmaking studios around Ireland were invited by The Leinster Printmaking Studio, Clane, Co. Kildare to create \u2018little prints\u2019 on \u2018little known events or incidents\u2019 during or around the time of the 1916 Rising and the exhibition will tour the Dublin Libraries in 2016.<\/p>\n

Each library displaying the exhibition will host a workshop in basic printmaking. Participants will be invited to illustrate an incident\/artefact of their choice. “Graphic Explorations in Print – 32 years of student work from Distillers Press, NCAD” is a showcase of work produced by graphic design students at Distillers Press from 1983 until present day.<\/p>\n

Distillers Press, previously known as the graphic print workshop, had its origin at the National College of Art and Design\u2019s original location on Kildare Street. In the 1980s when the Department of Visual Communication moved to the college\u2019s new location on Thomas Street, the facility was expanded.<\/p>\n

The Press now has a number of operational letterpress proofing presses and a large collection of metal and wooden type in a wide variety of fonts. It is used by students on a daily basis for creative projects and also as a teaching tool to introduce the fundamentals of typography. Ireland\u2019s first practice-based Masters in the visual arts was undertaken at the Press in 1986; samples of this work can be viewed in the exhibition.<\/p>\n

The Spring Festival Fair is the main Family Event of the Chinese New Year Festival celebrations this year. It will take place on Saturday and Sunday and will be in a more unusual place than in previous years; The chq Building at Customs House Quay near the IFSC is this year’s venue for the festivities.<\/p>\n

The Year of the Monkey starts on Monday therefore, monkeys play a big role, but as always there as also Chinese Dragons and other animals present. Along with Lion, Dragon and Unicorn performances there will also be an appearance of the famous Monkey King, or Sun Wukong, known as a character from Journey to the West, one of China\u2019s classic novels.<\/p>\n

A mix of indoor and outdoor activities and performances will entertain you throughout the day and Chinese and Asian food and tea will look after the other needs.<\/p>\n

Enjoy music performances on the cucurbit flute, bamboo flute, Chinese pipa and guzheng. Learn how to play Chinese chess (xiangqi), Go (w\u00e9iq\u00ed), a more challenging ping pong game with pans and wooden spoons and other games.<\/p>\n

Witness and sample the traditional Chinese form of Folk Art called Sugar painting with Sugar Painting Artist Mr Liu Binbin from China, who will create two dimensional figures. using just hot, liquid sugar. The result is a snack that is popular among children and selecting a figure is normally determined by spinning the arrow on a wheel<\/p>\n

You can participate in hands-on activities from paper-cutting, calligraphy, kite, lantern and red envelope (Huan Bao) making workshops or you can watch martial arts and dance demos.<\/p>\n

A Fashion Show of Chinese traditional dress (Qipao) will showcase silk and embroidery with thick laces trimmed at the collar, sleeves and edges. (Saturday+Sunday 15:00-16:00)<\/p>\n

The exhibition “Trauma – Built to Break” (20 Nov – 21 Feb) in the Science Gallery is exploring the biological, psychological and societal aspects of trauma. As a sudden, violent, stressful event, trauma can be short-lived or long-lasting with impacts that range from deeply personal to universal.<\/p>\n

Like all Science Gallery exhibitions, TRAUMA is suitable for all ages and while younger children might need some further explanation, there are lots of exhibits that can easily explained.<\/p>\n

The Science Gallery mediators are helpers (usually students or graduates) that know the whole exhibition inside out and are very happy to help with a lot more information than the little labels at the exhibits can provide. Use their excellent service!<\/p>\n

The Spring Festival Fair is the main Family Event of the Chinese New Year Festival celebrations this year. It will take place on Saturday and Sunday and will be in a more unusual place than in previous years; The chq Building at Customs House Quay near the IFSC is this year’s venue for the festivities.<\/p>\n

The Year of the Monkey starts on Monday therefore, monkeys play a big role, but as always there as also Chinese Dragons and other animals present. Along with Lion, Dragon and Unicorn performances there will also be an appearance of the famous Monkey King, or Sun Wukong, known as a character from Journey to the West, one of China\u2019s classic novels.<\/p>\n

A mix of indoor and outdoor activities and performances will entertain you throughout the day and Chinese and Asian food and tea will look after the other needs.<\/p>\n

Enjoy music performances on the cucurbit flute, bamboo flute, Chinese pipa and guzheng. Learn how to play Chinese chess (xiangqi), Go (w\u00e9iq\u00ed), a more challenging ping pong game with pans and wooden spoons and other games.<\/p>\n

Witness and sample the traditional Chinese form of Folk Art called Sugar painting with Sugar Painting Artist Mr Liu Binbin from China, who will create two dimensional figures. using just hot, liquid sugar. The result is a snack that is popular among children and selecting a figure is normally determined by spinning the arrow on a wheel<\/p>\n

You can participate in hands-on activities from paper-cutting, calligraphy, kite, lantern and red envelope (Huan Bao) making workshops or you can watch martial arts and dance demos.<\/p>\n

A Fashion Show of Chinese traditional dress (Qipao) will showcase silk and embroidery with thick laces trimmed at the collar, sleeves and edges. (Saturday+Sunday 15:00-16:00)<\/p>\n

How does trauma affect the brain, the body, the national psyche or all three? How do buildings, bodies, artworks and stories record the traumas of our past? How do we bounce back after a trauma?<\/p>\n

The exhibition “Trauma – Built to Break” (20 Nov – 21 Feb) in the Science Gallery is exploring the biological, psychological and societal aspects of trauma. As a sudden, violent, stressful event, trauma can be short-lived or long-lasting with impacts that range from deeply personal to universal.<\/p>\n

Like all Science Gallery exhibitions, TRAUMA is suitable for all ages and while younger children might need some further explanation, there are lots of exhibits that can easily explained.<\/p>\n

The Science Gallery mediators are helpers (usually students or graduates) that know the whole exhibition inside out and are very happy to help with a lot more information than the little labels at the exhibits can provide. Use their excellent service!<\/p>\n

A few years ago, there was one or two places in town were you could watch the Super Bowl, the American Football final, live, then a few more switched their TVs on, but kicked people out of the pub when the game was only half over because they hadn’t checked how long an American Football Game will take.<\/p>\n

All this has changed and in 2016, the list of pubs that is showing the game is longer than your arm. I still wouldn’t trust that all will show it until the end, so you better ask, but it got big!<\/p>\n

So, no reason to avoid pubs? Well, you can also watch it on BBC2 where it will be broadcast from 23:00-03:30. Chicken Wings made in your oven and beer from the off-licence. Not the worst alternative. ;-)<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

The most visible consequence of the Rising was the destruction of Sackville Street (O\u2019Connell Street) and the adjoining thoroughfares. This resulted in significant material loss for the citizens and property owners of Dublin. Farmleigh House Writer-in-Residence Lia Mills will host “In the Wake of the Rising”, an evening of readings form February issue of the literary magazine “A Stinging Fly”.<\/p>\n

The topic of this issue is “In the Wake of the Rising” and because many of the leaders of the Easter Rising were writers, it asks the question “What do today’s writers make of the events in 1916 and their aftermath?”<\/p>\n

Guest Editor Sean O’Reilly and editor and publisher Declan Meade will be joined by contributors (Elaine Feeney, Paul Lynch and Lisa McInerney) to read from the issue and to talk about issues raised by the centenary of the Rising and the current state of Ireland and Irish writing. They will also talk about what it takes to start a literary magazine, how to keep it going and why?<\/p>\n

Democracy? Not in Ireland!?<\/strong><\/p>\n

After a long wait and some unnecessary game playing by the Taoiseach who – oddly enough – is the one who is allowed to choose the date of a General Election, the date has finally be announced for Fri 26 February 2016.<\/p>\n

From now until 10 March, Ireland will be without a parliament and any laws that were intended but didn’t get to completion will have to started anew when the new Dail (parliament) will be formed in March,<\/p>\n

In the next three weeks, all parties will try to convince you that you should vote for them and if you talk to their representatives, they will tell you what they will do in Ireland if and when they are in power. But the surprise might be big – or at least it SHOULD be big – when people will NOT find the possibility to vote for a party on their ballot paper on election day. Instead, you can only vote for one of 3-5 people in Ireland (depending on the size of your constituency it will be 3,4 or 5).<\/p>\n

So, what’s up with that?<\/p>\n

Well, in Ireland you can only vote for an individual and then you are totally dependent on the moods, abilities and personal wants of this individual. If your representative, the person you have voted for, gets elected, he\/she can do whatever he\/she wants for the next 5 years and you have no control anymore. If your representative was a member of Party X and that’s why you voted for him\/her, but a day after being elected he\/she leaves that party and either becomes a an independent (automatically with no influence) or joins another party, you just got the opposite of what you wanted. And it gets worse: If you vote for a candidate that does not get elected, it is possible that your vote will have absolutely no influence on the future composition of the parliament.<\/p>\n

This is quite undemocratic!<\/p>\n

If you could vote for a party and separately for an individual of that party, the risk would be reduced, but as long as all depends on that individual you have no democratic choice.<\/p>\n

It is shocking that this system is still in place and if this was a South American or African state that had such a screwed up system, we would demand their system to be changed!<\/p>\n

It has happened numerous times in the past that a TD (member of parliament) was kicked out of his\/her party or decided to leave that party over issues that were not even current at the last election. So you would have never had a chance to discuss this issues with the candidate and then decide if you still want to vote for him\/her. But after he\/she was kicked out or has left, now your intended vote for Party X is not supporting that Party anymore.<\/p>\n

Unless you support a party because your father and grandfather did, most people decide who to vote for based on promises this party makes before the elections, but because you never were able to vote for a party, you have NO way in Ireland to decide for or against the programme of a party.<\/p>\n

Look into it and you will be amazed about the oddness and undemocratic-ness (that word SHOULD exist! ;-) ) of this system!<\/p>\n
