And another week is over or – as many of us prefer to look at it – another weekend is starting! :-)<\/p>\n

The Temple Bar Tradfest in Dublin and the Banjo and Bovril Trad Fest in the Harbour Bar in Bray will both start on Wednesday and have a great line-up. The festival in Bray is completely free and the Temple Bar Tradfest had a large amount of high-profile bands and musicians on their free “Frontrow” programme and I had it listed in the “Upcoming Events” section for a number of weeks. At this stage, however, all (free) tickets are gone. The only remaining thing if you want “free”, is the Music Trail, but have a look at the complete programme maybe you find something that interests you among the non-free events.<\/p>\n

After a very meager first half of January, last week a good few people helped with donations, but there is only one week left and we are still EUR 80 down from what we need to pay the bill.<\/p>\n

So, please don’t forget that there are two areas the Dublin Event Guide needs your continued help with every week: Your donations<\/a> help paying the bills for sending the Dublin Event Guide every week, so please help if you can. Just 1 Euro per month (12 Euro per year) would be great. Unfortunately not many subscribers are prepared to or able to help, so please don’t rely on others!<\/p>\n

And secondly: without you spreading the word we would have never reached 24,000 subscribers and 60,000 Facebook Likes. But it is just the start!! The goals are MUCH bigger than that! :-) Imagine if everyone just got ONE additional person to subscribe to the Dublin Event Guide (for Free Events). This section is intended to provide some help in picking and choosing from the huge number of events by sharing with you what I will\/might or would do. This is not a “best of…” list and if an event is not listed here, it by no means implies that the event is not interesting. Instead my “picks” are just based on my personal preferences. The Trad Fest in Temple Bar and the Trad Fest in the Harbour Bar in Bray both sound interesting. Bray is completely free, and in Temple Bar, most of the high-profile free events needed tickets, which are gone now. But the pubs still have more trad music than usually, so you still benefit.<\/p>\n

But what should you do before Wednesday when the Trad Festivals start?<\/p>\n

I will mention the Science Gallery exhibition again! It is worth it. In addition there is a Gift Swap combined with a new spoken word event “The Narration Station” on Sunday evening, “How to Tell The Time” is an Astronomy lecture on Monday.<\/p>\n

Dublin City has a problem with Buskers and Street Performers<\/h2>\n
\n

For tourists and for us, who live in Dublin, a vibrant busking scene in the City Centre is great entertainment when you go to Grafton Street or Henry Street or Temple Bar and I would seriously miss it, if there was no music or street performance in the City Centre. But some shops and Dublin City don’t seem to like buskers and street performers. This is the conclusion you have to come to when you read the Street Performers Bye-Laws.<\/p>\n

Street Performers have to get a license in Dublin! And Dublin City would even like to test their musical abilities. That is nearly as bad as having to get a skills cert if you want to play golf on a German golf course (Yes, you really need to have that!)<\/p>\n

There were very strict rules and now Dublin City wants to make them MUCH stricter.<\/p>\n

Until 12 February you can voice your opinion about the Street Performers Bye-Laws and you should! The website for the consultation is here<\/a> and the one that you want to read and comment on is the third document “The draft revised Bye-Laws with the proposed changes marked in red<\/a>“.<\/span><\/p>\n

Not everything in the document is bad, but a lot of things are just sooo restrictive that you have to wonder if Dublin City would prefer to make busking illegal. Strange!
\n<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n

Screenclick is gone<\/h2>\n
\n

Many didn’t even realise and the shock was tiny when a few weeks ago, Screenclick closed for ever. If you can’t remember, Screenclick was the company that sent you one or more DVD that you could keep for a few weeks or a month and after you had watched them, you would send the DVDs back and get a new batch sent to you.<\/p>\n

So it was a DVD rental shop that worked via mailorder. It didn’t need expensive shops and would give you more time to watch the DVD, but there was no chance for “Let’s watch a film tonight!” if you hadn’t prepared for it days in advance, so it seemed moderately interesting. However, with Netflix and other online services (some legal, some not), Screenclick came to the end of its life and has now closed the doors when the mother company dvdrentals.ie decided to shut down.<\/p>\n

It seems that only the Irish Times wrote about it<\/a>. A sign of the insignificance of the service in 2016?<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n

The 10th Annual Adult Learners\u2019 Festival in 2016 is a nationwide celebration of adult learning, coordinated by AONTAS, the National Adult Learning Organisation.<\/p>\n

It will take place from 22-27 February 2016 and AONTAS invites community groups, organisations and local businesses to get involved by hosting free adult learning events during this six day festival.<\/p>\n

JMW Turner – The Vaughan Bequest<\/h2>\n

Every year, for the whole month of January, the National Gallery shows 31 watercolours and drawings by JMW Turner (1775-1851). The collection covers all periods of the artist\u2019s career, including topographical scenes and expressive images from his later European tours.<\/p>\n

Henry Vaughan, an English collector of art died in 1899 aged 90 and he gave instructions to distribute his art collection among major public museums. The bulk of his Turner watercolours was divided between the National Gallery of Scotland (38) and the National Gallery of Ireland (31) with the condition that they have to be shown every January.<\/p>\n

Fifty Printmakers from eight printmaking studios around Ireland were invited by The Leinster Printmaking Studio, Clane, Co. Kildare to create \u2018little prints\u2019 on \u2018little known events or incidents\u2019 during or around the time of the 1916 Rising and the exhibition will tour the Dublin Libraries in 2016.<\/p>\n

Each library displaying the exhibition will host a workshop in basic printmaking. Participants will be invited to illustrate an incident\/artefact of their choice. A small selection of the resulting work may be added to the website and may be included in the display in the library. Please check with the library for date and time of their respective workshop.<\/p>\n

“Graphic Explorations in Print – 32 years of student work from Distillers Press, NCAD” is a showcase of work produced by graphic design students at Distillers Press from 1983 until present day.<\/p>\n

Distillers Press, previously known as the graphic print workshop, had its origin at the National College of Art and Design\u2019s original location on Kildare Street. In the 1980s when the Department of Visual Communication moved to the college\u2019s new location on Thomas Street, the facility was expanded.<\/p>\n

The Press now has a number of operational letterpress proofing presses and a large collection of metal and wooden type in a wide variety of fonts. It is used by students on a daily basis for creative projects and also as a teaching tool to introduce the fundamentals of typography. Ireland\u2019s first practice-based Masters in the visual arts was undertaken at the Press in 1986; samples of this work can be viewed in the exhibition.<\/p>\n

How does trauma affect the brain, the body, the national psyche or all three? How do buildings, bodies, artworks and stories record the traumas of our past? How do we bounce back after a trauma?<\/p>\n

The exhibition “Trauma – Built to Break” (20 Nov – 21 Feb) in the Science Gallery is exploring the biological, psychological and societal aspects of trauma. As a sudden, violent, stressful event, trauma can be short-lived or long-lasting with impacts that range from deeply personal to universal.<\/p>\n

Like all Science Gallery exhibitions, TRAUMA is suitable for all ages and while younger children might need some further explanation, there are lots of exhibits that can easily explained.<\/p>\n

The Science Gallery mediators are helpers (usually students or graduates) that know the whole exhibition inside out and are very happy to help with a lot more information than the little labels at the exhibits can provide. Use their excellent service!<\/p>\n

The Science Gallery has very visitor friendly opening hours of Tue-Fri 12:00-20:00 and Sat+Sun 12:00-18:00.

How does trauma affect the brain, the body, the national psyche or all three? How do buildings, bodies, artworks and stories record the traumas of our past? How do we bounce back after a trauma?<\/p>\n

The exhibition “Trauma – Built to Break” (20 Nov – 21 Feb) in the Science Gallery is exploring the biological, psychological and societal aspects of trauma. As a sudden, violent, stressful event, trauma can be short-lived or long-lasting with impacts that range from deeply personal to universal.<\/p>\n

Like all Science Gallery exhibitions, TRAUMA is suitable for all ages and while younger children might need some further explanation, there are lots of exhibits that can easily explained.<\/p>\n

The Science Gallery mediators are helpers (usually students or graduates) that know the whole exhibition inside out and are very happy to help with a lot more information than the little labels at the exhibits can provide. Use their excellent service!<\/p>\n

The “Dublin Sketchers” is an informal group of (hobby) artists who go somewhere different in Dublin every Sunday (e.g. National Museum, Maritime Museum, Dublin Flea Market, Farmleigh, Botanic Gardens, Dublin Castle, Science Gallery, …), sketch for one to two hours and then meet up for coffee afterwards and discuss their sketches.<\/p>\n

There are some hugely talented people among them and it is a great idea to meet up with others who have the same hobby. Two great events, a Christmas Gift Swap and the new Spoken Word Event “The Narration Station” will take place this Sunday in conjunction with each other. They are both organised by Alt Events and take place in the same venue.<\/p>\n

For the Gift Swap bring all your unwanted Christmas presents (good quality but unwanted stuff!) and swap them for something better.<\/p>\n

And while the Gift Swap is going on, the brand new spoken word event “The Narration Station” will get participants to pick a favourite passage from a book they have a connection to, explain why this particular passage means so much to them and then narrate the section to the audience. You can be audience or you can participate.<\/p>\n

Admission is free, but the event is in aid of the homeless charity Focus Ireland and therefore a donation of EUR 5 per person is suggested.<\/p>\n

A Robert Burns Commemoration “Burns Night Out” will take place in Rathmines on Monday to celebrate the birth of Robert Burns (Scotland’s National Poet) in 1759.<\/p>\n

Corrigan’s Pub (Mountpleasant Inn) in Rathmines will host a reading aloud of poems by ‘Rabbie’ Burns along with a discussion of his life and works. You will also hear some of the works by other poets who influenced Burns and works by later poets who were influenced by his poetry.<\/p>\n

Some local eateries will also participate by putting a Scottish traditional dish on their menu that night. An Bhialann and The Cinnamon will partake.<\/p>\n

The event is organised by Howard Linnane.<\/p>\n

The Spanish Civil War (1936-1939) is the most traumatic event in the recent history of Spain. This would be the biggest extractive project that Latin America has ever seen.”<\/p>\n

At some point in life we learned that if we form strong alliances and work in a team, we are stronger than if we fight against each other. And we also should have learned by now that hostility against people that grew up or live somewhere else than we do, is not cool at all.<\/p>\n

So, who was the smart cookie, that came up with this amazingly clever idea to create “Dublin Northside Attractions” as a separate tourist entity with their own website at www.dublindna.ie<\/a>? As tiny as Dublin is and as close as Northside and Southside are, it is totally nonsensical, bordering on idiotic, to artificially create further a divide than we need to. I am not convinced that Failte Ireland or Dublin Tourism had that idea, but they are certainly endorsing it according to the website.<\/p>\n

So, the Northside Attractions seem to think they are something better OR they think they are inferior. (These are typically the drivers for the creation of gangs! And there is no organisation or website for “Dublin Southside Attractions” at the moment.) We don’t know why, though.<\/p>\n

But if you start your own gang, there is one important element to consider: You have to be ruthless and rigorous in the application of the rules, otherwise your inverse-discrimination doesn’t work.<\/p>\n

And that is where the next idiocy comes in: One outsider attraction that was accepted in the “Dublin Northside Attractions” gang is the Guinness Storehouse in the Liberties! Northside? Not at all!<\/p>\n

So why did they break their own rules and accept a Southside attraction in their midst? Well, because it is the most popular attraction in Dublin and gangs always want the popular kid in their own gang, not in the enemy gang.<\/p>\n

Narrow-minded nonsense!<\/p>\n
