I tried hard and it is not as late as in other weeks, but this Dublin Event Guide is not really early either. It will be struggle again when more events start happening. Mind you, we already have about 170 this week. That’s not bad for a first week back after the holidays. But let me keep this short this week and get the mail out to you! ;-)<\/p>\n

First Fortnight – Mental Health Arts Festival<\/h2>\n

Since 2009, “First Fortnight”, a Mental Health Arts Festival takes place every year in the first two weeks of the new year. It is a great event with some charitable background and that’s why I mention it here separately. at some stage most events were free, but that has changed. There are still some free events and they will be listed in this and the next Dublin Event Guide, but there are many many more non-free events, which unfortunately don’t fit in the “Dublin Event Guide (for Free Events)”. JMW Turner – The Vaughan Bequest<\/h2>\n

Every year, for the whole month of January, the National Gallery shows 31 watercolours and drawings by JMW Turner (1775-1851). The collection covers all periods of the artist\u2019s career, including topographical scenes and expressive images from his later European tours.<\/p>\n

Henry Vaughan, an English collector of art died in 1899 aged 90 and he gave instructions to distribute his art collection among major public museums. The bulk of his Turner watercolours was divided between the National Gallery of Scotland (38) and the National Gallery of Ireland (31) with the condition that they have to be shown every January.<\/p>\n

Charlotte Prodger will present her recent Margaret Tait award winning work, Stoneymollan Trail. This feature length single-screen video revolves around the idea of screens and how they measure and mediate subjectivity. Comprising material from multiple formats that includes an archive of miniDV tapes that Prodger shot between 1999 and 2004, recent footage shot on her iPhone and HD camera, recorded voiceover and screenprinted graphic forms, Stoneymollan Trailtraces a history of recent video formats as well as the artist\u2019s personal history.<\/p>\n

“Graphic Explorations in Print – 32 years of student work from Distillers Press, NCAD” is a showcase of work produced by graphic design students at Distillers Press from 1983 until present day.<\/p>\n

Distillers Press, previously known as the graphic print workshop, had its origin at the National College of Art and Design\u2019s original location on Kildare Street. In the 1980s when the Department of Visual Communication moved to the college\u2019s new location on Thomas Street, the facility was expanded.<\/p>\n

The Press now has a number of operational letterpress proofing presses and a large collection of metal and wooden type in a wide variety of fonts. It is used by students on a daily basis for creative projects and also as a teaching tool to introduce the fundamentals of typography. Ireland\u2019s first practice-based Masters in the visual arts was undertaken at the Press in 1986; samples of this work can be viewed in the exhibition.<\/p>\n

“Design it” is an exhibition exploring design in a child\u2019s world and it is part of Irish Design 2015.<\/p>\n

The exhibition and a range of (non-free) events will introduce children to the process of design, illustrating how designers take an idea and then make it a reality.<\/p>\n

How does trauma affect the brain, the body, the national psyche or all three? How do buildings, bodies, artworks and stories record the traumas of our past? How do we bounce back after a trauma?<\/p>\n

The exhibition “Trauma – Built to Break” (20 Nov – 21 Feb) in the Science Gallery is exploring the biological, psychological and societal aspects of trauma. As a sudden, violent, stressful event, trauma can be short-lived or long-lasting with impacts that range from deeply personal to universal.<\/p>\n

Like all Science Gallery exhibitions, TRAUMA is suitable for all ages and while younger children might need some further explanation, there are lots of exhibits that can easily explained.<\/p>\n

The Science Gallery mediators are helpers (usually students or graduates) that know the whole exhibition inside out and are very happy to help with a lot more information than the little labels at the exhibits can provide. Use their excellent service!<\/p>\n

The Science Gallery has very visitor friendly opening hours of Tue-Fri 12:00-20:00 and Sat+Sun 12:00-18:00.

“Noramollyannalivialucia: The Muse & Mister Joyce” is a one-woman “play for voices” that will be performed by the Curlew Theatre Company.<\/p>\n

Joyce\u2019s wife, Nora Barnacle Joyce, is living in Zurich, at the Pensione Neptune. The time is around 1950, so she is in her 60s. She is being visited by a group of people (The Audience!) who could be members of a “literary tour”.
\nThey are eager to hear something of Nora\u2019s life with Joyce. Its difficulties and its rewards, the sadness of their daughter\u2019s illness, their relationship, her importance as “muse” (among other “muses”) to her husband in his work. Interspersed in her memories are snatches from the works of her husband.

How does trauma affect the brain, the body, the national psyche or all three? How do buildings, bodies, artworks and stories record the traumas of our past? How do we bounce back after a trauma?<\/p>\n

The exhibition “Trauma – Built to Break” (20 Nov – 21 Feb) in the Science Gallery is exploring the biological, psychological and societal aspects of trauma. As a sudden, violent, stressful event, trauma can be short-lived or long-lasting with impacts that range from deeply personal to universal.<\/p>\n

Like all Science Gallery exhibitions, TRAUMA is suitable for all ages and while younger children might need some further explanation, there are lots of exhibits that can easily explained.<\/p>\n

The Science Gallery mediators are helpers (usually students or graduates) that know the whole exhibition inside out and are very happy to help with a lot more information than the little labels at the exhibits can provide. Use their excellent service!<\/p>\n

“Pull Down a Horseman” depicts a secret meeting between Pearse and Connolly, who discussed if and when to go ahead with the 1916 Rising. The dramatic conflict comes out of their expression of their differing political philosophies and perspectives.<\/p>\n

The incident described, which is believed to have taken place in a cottage in South County Dublin in early Spring 1916, has a basis in historical research. The play was written in 1966 by playwright Eugene McCabe to commemorate the Rising\u2019s 50th Anniversary and was first presented by the Abbey Theatre.<\/p>\n

Admission is free, with a suggested donation of EUR 5. The website clearly says that there is no entry fee, but – and that makes a lot of sense – that your donations are very much appreciated (Musicians need to pay for rent and food too!) Be generous after the gig if you liked it, but if someone wants to charge an admission charge, please point out that the “rules” as described on their website are like I have explained.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

Ireland joined the United Nations on 14 Dec 1955. To celebrate 60 years of the country\u2019s active membership, the Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade have developed a programme of events to raise awareness and promote debate around Ireland\u2019s involvement in this important global organisation.<\/p>\n

As part of these celebrations the Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade and the Academy\u2019s Documents on Irish Foreign Policy project have organised the exhibition “UN60: \u00c9ire ag na N\u00e1isi\u00fain Aontaithe \/ Ireland at the United Nations, 1955-2015”.<\/p>\n

The Royal Irish Academy Library will host this short duration exhibition, which will reflect upon Ireland\u2019s membership and role in the UN.<\/p>\n

“Pull Down a Horseman” depicts a secret meeting between Pearse and Connolly, who discussed if and when to go ahead with the 1916 Rising. The dramatic conflict comes out of their expression of their differing political philosophies and perspectives.<\/p>\n

The incident described, which is believed to have taken place in a cottage in South County Dublin in early Spring 1916, has a basis in historical research. The play was written in 1966 by playwright Eugene McCabe to commemorate the Rising\u2019s 50th Anniversary and was first presented by the Abbey Theatre.<\/p>\n

Festival Sponsorship not the way it should be?
\n<\/strong><\/p>\n

Junior Minister Michael Ring (Tourism & Sport) has announced which festivals will get funding from Failte Ireland this year and there are some oddities among them. In total 23 national festivals and events are getting 1.8mio in 2016, but some should get (a lot) less and others should get more. Have a look at the list here<\/a>, before you continue reading so that you can form your own opinion first.<\/p>\n

One single festival takes the majority of money and really just leaves crumbs for the rest: The St. Patrick’s Festival sucks up a whole 1 mio and I really don’t think it is worth that amount. While the parade has significantly improved from the parades 10 or 20 years ago, it has come to a standstill for many years now. There is no more improvement and year after year, the same formula with just slight alterations will be applied. The festival route is still too short for the amount of people that would like to see something and are left bitterly disappointed and the festival would definitely benefit from an overhaul. Sure, there are still up to approximately 300,000 people on the streets for it (don’t believe the 500k lie!!) but in terms of cultural value, the St. Patrick’s Day Festival is definitely not the top event!<\/p>\n

And a little further down the list, there are these four:

\nCity Spectacular EUR 25,000
\nRock n Roll, Dublin Half Marathon EUR 20,000<\/p>\n

The Bikefest hasn’t really impressed in recent years and 30k seems relatively high for that, where the Bloomsday uses up 25k is difficult to see and that the 100% commercial Rock ‘n’ Roll Half Marathon gets ANY funding is extremely surprising. But the City Spectacular on the other hand, which is one of the, if not THE best event in Dublin only gets 25k!? That’s odd!! They deserve a LOT more!<\/p>\n<\/div>\n
