I hope you had a great start of 2016. It will be a very busy year and it will start racing away underneath your feet. How do I know that? Because once you have reached adulthood, EVERY year does that and the years are passing faster and faster the older you get.<\/a><\/p>\n

This year will also bring the 100th anniversary of the Easter Rising, which is an event that will be politicised by some as much as possible and will leave others completely cold. Because the main event is at Easter on 27\/28 March (even if that date is historically totally incorrect), there will be a mad rush to squeeze the main Easter Rising events in the first few months of this new year. Let’s see how that works out! …and let’s hope that the Easter Rising is celebrated for its positive results on the Irish society and not as a military event or as a long line of funerals.<\/a><\/p>\n

If your week was great, you might not need it, but most of us had some challenging moments in the last week and there could be more in the coming week and this section is for the people that want to overcome the hurdles, achieve more and remember that despite all, life is great!<\/a><\/p>\n

Today’s feel good slot HAS to be about goal setting!! ;-) “Goal Setting” is the New Year’s Resolutions of the successful people! New Year’s Resolutions don’t work in more than 90% of cases because they either create a conflict that our brain struggles with and ultimately fights against or they describe an outcome that is not clearly enough defined.<\/a><\/p>\n

“In 2016 I will become fit.” There is no definition of what “fit” is and therefore we can’t work towards it in manageable steps. So you have to be clearer, which is done when you use Goal Setting. (Similar: “I will go to the gym more often”. “I will lose weight.” “I will learn a language.” All too woolly!)<\/a><\/p>\n

Or an example for the creation of a conflict: “In 2016 I will take part in a mini-marathon.” If you never even ran 10 metres, then this is sooooo far away from the NOW, that the “future you” will be in conflict with the “current you”. And because you don’t provide a path from the current You to the future You, this conflict can not be resolved. Self-sabotage follows and soon the New Year’s resolution will be abandoned.<\/a><\/p>\n

College Green and the traffic<\/h2>\n
\n

Whoever thinks that Dublin City a) has a clue what they are doing regarding traffic measures or b) thinks they are doing a good job, really needs to wake up. The public transport in our beloved Dublin is horrendously poor and the prices are much too high. The attempts to ban cars from the city are in principal not a bad idea, but because it all happens totally disjointed while ignoring some of Dublin’s geographical particularities and without improving the poor Public Transport, things are not looking good. The LUAS improved things a little, but plan to build two isolated lines should have appeared odd many many years ago. Now the cross-city LUAS is being added and it just points out the incapabilities of the people running the city.<\/a><\/p>\n

Last week then, the current Dublin City “Manager” Owen Keegan, who was the Director of Traffic (!!) for many years in Dublin, said that he has no clue what to do with the buses that used the route along College Green once the LUAS tracks are installed. Dublin Bus wants to use the route again (that’s where the passengers are), Dublin City Management wants to ban all cars from College Green and if you ban cars, then I think ALL traffic (including buses and taxis) should be banned from an area. Either pedestrianise it or not!! Imagine they had allowed taxis and buses to continue driving in Grafton Street and Henry Street when they pedestrianised these streets!?<\/a><\/p>\n

And you wonder what will happen to the buses on College Green? Who knows! If the Dublin City Manager and former Director of Traffic has no clue – as he has shown over the years – things are looking bad!<\/a><\/p>\n

Some weekly events still on holidays<\/h2>\n

THis time of the year is a little unpredicatble as far as the regular\/weekly events are concerned. Nearly all markets, for example, are taking some time out and won’t be back until the 09\/10 January and also some of the other weekly gigs etc are takijg the opportunity to recover from the Christmas and New Year’s celebrations and won’t be back until next week.<\/a><\/p>\n

Where I had a clear indication that an event was not taking place, I removed it from the listings, but in a lot of cases there is no clear “we are off” message on the website or Facebook Page. So there might be some events listed that are not happening, but all should come back again next week.<\/a><\/div>\n<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n

First Fortnight – Mental Health Arts Festival<\/h2>\n

Since 2009, “First Fortnight”, a Mental Health Arts Festival takes place every year in the first two weeks of the new year. It is a great event with some charitable background and that’s why I mention it here separately. at some stage most events were free, but that has changed. There are still some free events and they will be listed in this and the next Dublin Event Guide, but there are many many more non-free events, which unfortunately don’t fit in the “Dublin Event Guide (for Free Events)”. Every year, for the whole month of January, the National Gallery shows 31 watercolours and drawings by JMW Turner (1775-1851). The collection covers all periods of the artist\u2019s career, including topographical scenes and expressive images from his later European tours.<\/a><\/p>\n

“Design it” is an exhibition exploring design in a child\u2019s world and it is part of Irish Design 2015.<\/a><\/p>\n

How does trauma affect the brain, the body, the national psyche or all three? How do buildings, bodies, artworks and stories record the traumas of our past? How do we bounce back after a trauma?<\/a><\/p>\n

The exhibition “Trauma – Built to Break” (20 Nov – 21 Feb) in the Science Gallery is exploring the biological, psychological and societal aspects of trauma. As a sudden, violent, stressful event, trauma can be short-lived or long-lasting with impacts that range from deeply personal to universal.<\/a><\/p>\n

Like all Science Gallery exhibitions, TRAUMA is suitable for all ages and while younger children might need some further explanation, there are lots of exhibits that can easily explained.<\/a><\/p>\n

The Science Gallery mediators are helpers (usually students or graduates) that know the whole exhibition inside out and are very happy to help with a lot more information than the little labels at the exhibits can provide. Use their excellent service!<\/a><\/p>\n

How does trauma affect the brain, the body, the national psyche or all three? How do buildings, bodies, artworks and stories record the traumas of our past? How do we bounce back after a trauma?<\/a><\/p>\n

The exhibition “Trauma – Built to Break” (20 Nov – 21 Feb) in the Science Gallery is exploring the biological, psychological and societal aspects of trauma. As a sudden, violent, stressful event, trauma can be short-lived or long-lasting with impacts that range from deeply personal to universal.<\/a><\/p>\n

Like all Science Gallery exhibitions, TRAUMA is suitable for all ages and while younger children might need some further explanation, there are lots of exhibits that can easily explained.<\/a><\/p>\n

The Science Gallery mediators are helpers (usually students or graduates) that know the whole exhibition inside out and are very happy to help with a lot more information than the little labels at the exhibits can provide. Use their excellent service!<\/a><\/p>\n

The Science Gallery has very visitor friendly opening hours of Tue-Fri 12:00-20:00 and Sat+Sun 12:00-18:00.

Everyone has those songs that get us up when we\u2019re feeling down. CoMotion creates a unique opportunity to share those personal songs with a stranger. Each participant will be asked to make a short playlist of the songs they turn to when in need of a pick-up. They\u2019ll then be assigned a walking partner and a pair of headphone splitters before being sent off on a stroll. This is a chance to share a moving musical experience. So bring an inquisitive mind, some headphones and the songs that get you through.<\/a><\/p>\n

The “Dublin Sketchers” is an informal group of (hobby) artists who go somewhere different in Dublin every Sunday (e.g. National Museum, Maritime Museum, Dublin Flea Market, Farmleigh, Botanic Gardens, Dublin Castle, Science Gallery, …), sketch for one to two hours and then meet up for coffee afterwards and discuss their sketches.<\/a><\/p>\n

There are some hugely talented people among them and it is a great idea to meet up with others who have the same hobby. The Moving Crib of the St. Martin Apostolate is a whole basement full of handcrafted figures in front of painted backgrounds of nativity related scenes. There are 14 scenes, beginning with Adam and Eve and finishing with Christmas. Nearly all figures are moving and this historic crib, which was created in 1956, still fascinates children (and some adults!)<\/a><\/p>\n

Admission is free, but for the upkeep of the crib, a donation of EUR 1.50 per person is suggested.<\/a><\/p>\n

The Moving Crib of the St. Martin Apostolate is a whole basement full of handcrafted figures in front of painted backgrounds of nativity related scenes. There are 14 scenes, beginning with Adam and Eve and finishing with Christmas. Nearly all figures are moving and this historic crib, which was created in 1956, still fascinates children (and some adults!)<\/a><\/p>\n

#FEMPOWER – Feminist Conference & Activist Fair<\/h2>\n

“The purpose of #FEMPOWER is to inspire real, positive change for women in our communities. At the conference, guests will hear from some of Ireland\u2019s most prominent female speakers on topics ranging from education, leadership and childcare, to body image, consent and the eighth amendment. It will also act as a space for discussion and engagement with the panellists and with one another.<\/a><\/p>\n

Speakers are Una Mullally (journalist at The Irish Times), Lynn Ruane (president of Trinity College Dublin Students\u2019 Union), Sin\u00e9ad Burke (academic and writer), Dil Wickremasinghe (broadcaster at Newstalk and co-founder of Insight Matters), Rosaleen McDonagh (writer, performer and disability activist), Moninne Griffith (executive director of BeLonGTo and Chairperson of the NWCI), Maria Walsh (Business Woman and 2014 Rose of Tralee), Senator Katherine Zappone (Independent general election candidate in Dublin South West, feminist theologian, co-founder of An Cos\u00e1n and former CEO of the National Women’s Council)<\/a><\/p>\n

Following the discussion will be a feminist fair, where local and national organisations will have the chance to present their latest work, publications and sign up volunteers. A light lunch will be provided.<\/a><\/p>\n

Am I a terrorist? – Civil rights, Authorities and Terrorist Plots<\/strong><\/p>\n

On Tuesday, media outlets reported that Belgium successfully stopped terrorists from attacking Brussels during the New Year’s celebrations there: “Belgium arrests 2 men in New Year’s terror plot<\/a>” or – a little less excitable – on RTE: “Belgium arrests two people over suspected New Year attack plot<\/a>“<\/p>\n

Sounds like a near miss, right? Now, we don’t really know what happened in Belgian, but if you read the sparse information that is available, maybe the whole story is a good bit less sensational. Six people were arrested, four were released again, seemingly without charges. Not explosives and no weapons were found, but what was found is “military-style uniforms”, computer hardware (!!!) and IS propaganda material.<\/a><\/p>\n

Going by that find, I could be a terrorist as well: I have some military-style uniform pieces and – shock! – I have computer hardware in my possession. I don’t have any IS propaganda material, but I know that I went to a website of some dodgy organisation a few months ago and I wonder if that will make me automatically dodgy as well?<\/a><\/p>\n

We don’t really know what was found and how apparent the IS link was, but when authorities start getting hot headed, I always get worried because even in the most democratic and least-panicking countries, it seems that police organisations have a tendency to over-exaggerate the danger and their amazing successes and the consequence is that civil rights and liberties are gradually eroded.<\/a><\/p>\n

Maybe the Belgian police has very clear indications\/proof that some attacks were planned, then we should all be glad that they stopped the potential terrorists and we should thank the police. But how can we ensure that the evidence found was more than computer hardware, some uniform trousers and a few leaflets? <\/a><\/div>\n
