Hi all!<\/a><\/p>\n

Late again! :-S I had a great time in Germany at some beautiful Christmas Markets and with my parents and there was plenty of time to spend with my wonderful nephew and niece, who are just at that ideal age of 7 and 4. Ben, my nephew, gave me a stone that he found as a souvenir when we left. How sweet!! Anna, my niece, had something else for us! She generously passed on a whopping cold to us that she probably picked up in her Kindergarten. So this week I wrote this Dublin Event Guide with a big headache, fever, a running nose etc.<\/a><\/p>\n

Some people have asked me if there will be an edition next week as well and I can confirm that there will be one. I might not write it on Christmas Day, which is next Friday, and there will also be less events (Understandably!) but you will definitely get something.<\/a><\/p>\n

Dublin Christmas Markets Update<\/h2>\n

I went to the “Christmas Market” at the RDS during the week and found out that it is not that! It has no rresemblance with a Christmas Market, apart from the fact that the few stalls are in wooden huts and there are also some food stalls. There are 2 or 3 craft-like shops and the rest is phone covers, yellow smiley pillows, and the type of cheap “merchandise” stuff that you are sold outside Croke Park or Lansdowne Road on match or concert days. Perfect for kids that want to go to Funderland and that is the target group, but don’t go there expecting a nice Christmas Market.<\/a><\/p>\n

I still haven’t been to Dun Laoghaire this year, but I am told it is very very small. If you have been and can tell me about it, please send your critique to dublineventguide@gmail.com. The same goes for your critique about the Malahide Christmas Kingdom! I would love to get your input!<\/a><\/p>\n

After writing about, thinking about and talking about Christmas Markets for the last few weeks, I realised that Dublin has only two suitable locations for a Christmas Market…and George’s Dock, where the “I believe” market is, is not one of them,<\/a><\/p>\n

The only two suitable locations are St. Stephen’s Green and the courtyard of Dublin Castle! Unfortunately – in this case – both are owned\/looked after by the Office of Public Works (OPW), who run great events at Farmleigh House, but have never really made Dublin Castle or St. Stephen’s Green available for big long-duration events like a Christmas Market.<\/a><\/p>\n

I also have concluded that a market HAS to be organised and run by Dublin City (or the OPW) but NOT by an event management company and that as soon as a PR company gets hired, you can forget the whole thing because the focus is wrong.<\/a><\/p>\n

Despite the tall (and totally ridiculous) claim that the “I believe” Market will be one of Europe’s top Christmas Market in 3-5 years. there are more and more people that expect that there will not even be a Year 2 for this market. It is significantly better than last year’s Dublintown-organised Christmas Market on the footpath outside St. Stephen’s Green, but it is not good enough to leave any significant impression.<\/a><\/p>\n

Maybe all these trial and errors are to be expected in the childhood days of an event? Many forget that the first Christmas Market in Dublin took place just about 10 years ago. That is not that long ago! The N\u00fcrnberg Christkindlesmarket, with about 2 million visitors every year, has a 400 year long history! So maybe we should give Dublin Christmas Markets some more time to get it right? But what about the Galway Market and the Belfast Market? Where everybody is telling me that they are really good. They didn’t need more time!!<\/a><\/p>\n

“Design it” is an exhibition exploring design in a child\u2019s world and it is part of Irish Design 2015.<\/a><\/p>\n

The exhibition and a range of (non-free) events will introduce children to the process of design, illustrating how designers take an idea and then make it a reality.<\/a><\/p>\n

The Ark have challenged five Irish designers to create new products for children, taking inspiration from iconic children\u2019s toys, furniture and textiles.The Design It exhibition recreates each designer\u2019s individual studio giving us a glimpse at their working practices, using their sketches, photographs and working prototypes, to reveal how they get from an initial idea to the final product.<\/a><\/p>\n

With 20 stalls selling food and crafts, it is not one of the bigger markets but nestled between the new LexIcon library and the Maritime Museum it might have a better chance to create some Christmas atmosphere than the location at “The Metals” (near the Pavilion Theatre) was able to. Admission is free.<\/a><\/p>\n

The Maritime Museum will also be involved this year and will host some events, but it seems that none of these events are free.<\/a><\/p>\n

The outdoor children\u2019s amusements that comes with Christmas in Dun Laoghaire will be on Harbour Plaza.<\/a><\/div>\n

At George’s Dock and at the side of the CHQ building will be this year’s main Christmas market for Dublin. There is a Christmas Village (elsehwere you call that a Christmas Market!) and admission to it is free.<\/a><\/p>\n

The market runs every day from 26 Nov-23 Dec (Mon-Fri: 11:00-20:00, Sat: 10:00-21:00, Sun 10:00-20:00).<\/a><\/p>\n

The Christmas Market will be on the platform in George’s Dock and at the side of the CHQ building. There are also a small number of pop-up-shops and some activities in the CHQ building.<\/a><\/p>\n

It seems that the hopes and expectations of the organisers and – even more importantly – of the traders at this market were not fulfilled, so my personal expectation is that a return of this market next year is not guaranteed. Go while it is still there!<\/a><\/div>\n

The Moving Crib of the St. Martin Apostolate is a whole basement full of handcrafted figures in front of painted backgrounds of nativity related scenes. There are 14 scenes, beginning with Adam and Eve and finishing with Christmas. Nearly all figures are moving and this historic crib, which was created in 1956, still fascinates children (and some adults!)<\/a><\/p>\n

Admission is free, but for the upkeep of the crib, a donation of EUR 1.50 per person is suggested.<\/a><\/p>\n

The exhibition “Trauma – Built to Break” (20 Nov – 21 Feb) in the Science Gallery is exploring the biological, psychological and societal aspects of trauma. As a sudden, violent, stressful event, trauma can be short-lived or long-lasting with impacts that range from deeply personal to universal.<\/a><\/p>\n

Like all Science Gallery exhibitions, TRAUMA is suitable for all ages and while younger children might need some further explanation, there are lots of exhibits that can easily explained.<\/a><\/p>\n

The Science Gallery mediators are helpers (usually students or graduates) that know the whole exhibition inside out and are very happy to help with a lot more information than the little labels at the exhibits can provide. Use their excellent service!<\/a><\/p>\n

The Dun Laoghaire Christmas Festival is this year taking place at the new location near the Maritime Museum. It runs from Thursdays to Sundays every week until 24 Dec.<\/a><\/p>\n

With 20 stalls selling food and crafts, it is not one of the bigger markets but nestled between the new LexIcon library and the Maritime Museum it might have a better chance to create some Christmas atmosphere than the location at “The Metals” (near the Pavilion Theatre) was able to. Admission is free.<\/a><\/p>\n

The Maritime Museum will also be involved this year and will host some events, but it seems that none of these events are free.<\/a><\/p>\n

The outdoor children\u2019s amusements that comes with Christmas in Dun Laoghaire will be on Harbour Plaza.<\/a><\/div>\n

At George’s Dock and at the side of the CHQ building will be this year’s main Christmas market for Dublin. There is a Christmas Village (elsehwere you call that a Christmas Market!) and admission to it is free.<\/a><\/p>\n

The market runs every day from 26 Nov-23 Dec (Mon-Fri: 11:00-20:00, Sat: 10:00-21:00, Sun 10:00-20:00).<\/a><\/p>\n

The Christmas Market will be on the platform in George’s Dock and at the side of the CHQ building. There are also a small number of pop-up-shops and some activities in the CHQ building.<\/a><\/p>\n

It seems that the hopes and expectations of the organisers and – even more importantly – of the traders at this market were not fulfilled, so my personal expectation is that a return of this market next year is not guaranteed. Go while it is still there!<\/a><\/div>\n

The Moving Crib of the St. Martin Apostolate is a whole basement full of handcrafted figures in front of painted backgrounds of nativity related scenes. Nearly all figures are moving and this historic crib, which was created in 1956, still fascinates children (and some adults!)<\/a><\/p>\n

The exhibition “Trauma – Built to Break” (20 Nov – 21 Feb) in the Science Gallery is exploring the biological, psychological and societal aspects of trauma. As a sudden, violent, stressful event, trauma can be short-lived or long-lasting with impacts that range from deeply personal to universal.<\/a><\/p>\n

Like all Science Gallery exhibitions, TRAUMA is suitable for all ages and while younger children might need some further explanation, there are lots of exhibits that can easily explained.<\/a><\/p>\n

The Science Gallery mediators are helpers (usually students or graduates) that know the whole exhibition inside out and are very happy to help with a lot more information than the little labels at the exhibits can provide. Use their excellent service!<\/a><\/p>\n

The Gardiner Street Gospel Choir will perform a lunchtime gig at the I Believe Christmas Market either on the George’s Dock platform or in the CHQ building (weather dependent).<\/a><\/p>\n

The Gardiner Street Gospel Choir is one of Ireland’s best Gospel Choirs and it was one of only two choirs that started the gospel choir movement in Ireland more than 15 years ago.<\/a><\/p>\n

There will be gospel songs, Christmas Songs in gospel arrangements, but as well contemporary, even pop songs.<\/a><\/p>\n

Admission is free.<\/a><\/p>\n

The “Dublin Sketchers” is an informal group of (hobby) artists who go somewhere different in Dublin every Sunday (e.g. National Museum, Maritime Museum, Dublin Flea Market, Farmleigh, Botanic Gardens, Dublin Castle, Science Gallery, …), sketch for one to two hours and then meet up for coffee afterwards and discuss their sketches.<\/a><\/p>\n

There are some hugely talented people among them and it is a great idea to meet up with others who have the same hobby. At George’s Dock and at the side of the CHQ building will be this year’s main Christmas market for Dublin. There is a Christmas Village (elsehwere you call that a Christmas Market!) and admission to it is free.<\/a><\/p>\n

The market runs every day from 26 Nov-23 Dec (Mon-Fri: 11:00-20:00, Sat: 10:00-21:00, Sun 10:00-20:00).<\/a><\/p>\n

The Christmas Market will be on the platform in George’s Dock and at the side of the CHQ building. There are also a small number of pop-up-shops and some activities in the CHQ building.<\/a><\/p>\n

It seems that the hopes and expectations of the organisers and – even more importantly – of the traders at this market were not fulfilled, so my personal expectation is that a return of this market next year is not guaranteed. Go while it is still there!<\/a><\/div>\n

The Moving Crib of the St. Martin Apostolate is a whole basement full of handcrafted figures in front of painted backgrounds of nativity related scenes. Nearly all figures are moving and this historic crib, which was created in 1956, still fascinates children (and some adults!)<\/a><\/p>\n

Admission is free, but for the upkeep of the crib, a donation of EUR 1.50 per person is suggested.<\/a><\/p>\n

At George’s Dock and at the side of the CHQ building will be this year’s main Christmas market for Dublin. There is a Christmas Village (elsehwere you call that a Christmas Market!) and admission to it is free.<\/a><\/p>\n

The market runs every day from 26 Nov-23 Dec (Mon-Fri: 11:00-20:00, Sat: 10:00-21:00, Sun 10:00-20:00).<\/a><\/p>\n

The Christmas Market will be on the platform in George’s Dock and at the side of the CHQ building. There are also a small number of pop-up-shops and some activities in the CHQ building.<\/a><\/p>\n

It seems that the hopes and expectations of the organisers and – even more importantly – of the traders at this market were not fulfilled, so my personal expectation is that a return of this market next year is not guaranteed. Go while it is still there!<\/a><\/div>\n

The Moving Crib of the St. Martin Apostolate is a whole basement full of handcrafted figures in front of painted backgrounds of nativity related scenes. Nearly all figures are moving and this historic crib, which was created in 1956, still fascinates children (and some adults!)<\/a><\/p>\n

Admission is free, but for the upkeep of the crib, a donation of EUR 1.50 per person is suggested.<\/a><\/p>\n

And if you are in company and not happy with it, maybe don’t go next year or leave early? :-)<\/a><\/p>\n

It is one of the few days of the year, when shops, pubs and restaurants are closed and I always pity tourists from the European Continent on that day. Because in the rest of Europe, Christmas Eve is the BIG event, restaurants are open again on Christmas Day. Not so in Ireland! It has been a number of times that I saw tourists in the City Centre that were absolutely shocked and lost because nearly everything is closed.<\/a><\/p>\n

Thanks to our brothers and sisters from other countries and – in this case – especially from other religions, you now find a few Centras, Spars etc open on that day because Christmas doesn’t rate highly in their calendar.<\/a><\/p>\n

If you are a tourist and read this to find out where to go for food, try the Spar in Dame Street at the corner with George’s Street. You might be in luck.<\/a><\/p>\n

And after a long search, I found another exception for everyone who could do with going out on Christmas Day. It is a Christmas Dinner in a Bar and a free gig by the Dublin City Rounders in Murray’s Bar in O’Connell Street (see separate event listing in this Dublin Event Guide).<\/a><\/p>\n

If you forgot to buy the cream for the Christmas Pudding, hurry out in the morning because some shops only open for a few hours in the morning.<\/a><\/p>\n

A lot will be back to normal on 26 Dec, despite the fact that it is still a holiday. Many shops will be back open and restaurants and pubs will also welcome you again.<\/a><\/div>\n

Are you having fun with food???
<\/strong><\/p>\n

Most of us have heard at some stage in our life that playing with food is not ok. And maybe even the poor children in Africa was thrown in by your parents\/guardians as an enhancing and emphasising argument. The argument was a strong one and apart from events like the Tomatina in the Valencian town of Bu\u00f1ol, where participants throw mountains of tomatoes at each other, there is really not much “playing with food” happening.<\/a><\/p>\n

But then I discovered “fun sized apples” and “fun sized bananas”! WTF?!?!<\/a><\/p>\n

Are they then for having fun with and why? Or are they only for playing because they are small? Or is fun meant in a different way? Maybe there are not to have fun with, but to make fun about? Crude people!
And there are more questions: Who came up with the idea that small things are “fun sized”? Does that make it ok to go to someone smaller than you, who you met on a night out and tell him or her: “You are fun sized!” ;-) And can tall people not be fun? There is discrimination (against apples and bananas!) written all over this! :-P<\/p>\n

But seriously, the shops really must think we are idiots if they think that if they called these apples “Small apples”, we would buy them less than if they are called “fun sized”?<\/a><\/p>\n

And why have ALL supermarkets adopted this stupid naming??<\/a><\/p>\n
