From Tuesday until Thursday I was at my first and last Web Summit. It is a very interesting event, both in the GOOD and in the BAD meaning of “interesting” and the controversy around its departure from Dublin to Lisbon from next year is also “interesting”. Both sides seemed to have screwed up badly, but after having experienced it, I would say that the RDS is really not a good venue for an event like that and since we have no other big venue, the organisers’ plans and the infrastructure available in Dublin are just not compatible anymore. I also think that the event is much too big and the plans to grow it by another 20,000 people is – in my eyes – absolute madness, but it probably makes much too much money for a “repair” of the problems to get considered.<\/p>\n

This coming weekend I will be in the UK for a few days and somehow this Dublin Event Guide had to be created in between. Challenging to say the least! ;-)<\/p>\n

And here is my weekly appeal to you: These are two areas the Dublin Event Guide needs your continued help with and one I mentioned already: Your donations<\/a> help paying the bills for sending the Dublin Event Guide every week, so please help if you can. Just 1 Euro per month (12 Euro per year) would be great. Not very many subscribers are prepared to or able to help, so please don’t rely on others!<\/p>\n

In a successful 17-year senior football playing career, Packie Bonner made 641 appearances for Celtic, winning 4 Scottish League titles, 3 Scottish Cups and a League Cup between 1978 and 1995. He also played 80 times for the Republic of Ireland, was in two World Cup tournaments and one European Championship and he was the penalty-stopping goal keeper in the shootout at the 1990 World Cup in Italy, when Ireland made it through to the quarter final.<\/p>\n

Since retiring from playing, he has diversified into public speaking, media commentary and presentation as well as continuing to work as a representative of UEFA.<\/p>\n

Now Packie Bonner has told his story in “The Last Line” and to present his book and talk about his life and career, he is inviting to “An evening with Packie Bonner hosted by Gerard McDade”.<\/p>\n

Robert Grogan has written a one-man show entitled “Strolling Through Ulysses!” in which he tells the story of “Ulysses” and enacts some of the dialogue and narration in the book. The show is aimed at people who have never read “Ulysses” and the events and characters are highlighted in a light-hearted way while at all times keeping loyal to the text and respecting the authenticity of the novel. The show is amusing and entertaining and emphasises the humorous nature of “Ulysses” without compromising the extraordinary novel.<\/p>\n

Robert will perform his 70 minute show in the International Bar from Monday until Sunday. Tickets are EUR 10 and can be bought at the Sound Cellar on Nassau Street or online at Ticketmaster or you can also just pay at the door if there is still room.<\/p>\n

Mad Bank of Ireland Cash rules<\/h2>\n
\n

There was a time when a bank was the institute that looked after your money and your bank “manager” was there to help you. Now they don’t want to have anything to do with real money anymore and want to run everything cashless and person-less.<\/p>\n

Bank of Ireland have – in their wisdom – decided that the rules for “Over the Counter” cash transactions will be changed to make it nearly impossible for normal people to ever use the services of a bank employee when withdrawing or lodging money anymore and even the handing in of cheques to a person is now severely limited:<\/p>\n

You are only allowed to withdraw money at the counter if you withdraw more than EUR 700, a lodgement has to be for more than EUR 3000 and a cheque lodgement over the counter has to be for a minimum of 15 cheques.<\/p>\n

When these new rules were revealed there was an outcry and the Bank of Ireland was heavily criticised. So a little while later they “gave in” as you can read here<\/a> but the only change is that “vulnerable” people (old people and people that are unfamiliar with technology) will continue to be served at the counter. For younger aged people now exceptions are made.<\/p>\n

It is obviously still possible to lodge and withdraw money for lower amounts, but only at ATMs.<\/p>\n

If you are unhappy about this further reduction of customer service, think about a bank change, Unfortunately there is a high likelihood that some other banks will follow Bank of Ireland’s “lead”. But you should regularly check other banks out and move if another one offers better conditions.<\/p>\n

This is just a warning because I came across some questionable sellers:
\nIf you are a parent and are pestered by your children to buy them a Hoverboard \/ E-Board, which is a self-balancing electric two-wheeler (see picture here<\/a>), for Christmas, watch out and don’t fall for the rip-off traders!<\/p>\n

Science Week 2015 takes place from 08-15 November. There are about 1392 events all over Ireland and the main target group are children and teenagers. Approx. 150 events are in Dublin, 27 of them are free events and 18 are free events in Dublin for adults and families. That is unfortunately only HALF the free events for adults and families than last year! Some of the events require pre-booking (and could be booked out already).<\/p>\n

Science Week 2015 takes place from 08-15 November. There are about 1392 events all over Ireland and the main target group are children and teenagers. Science Week 2015 takes place from 08-15 November. There are about 1392 events all over Ireland and the main target group are children and teenagers. Approx. 150 events are in Dublin, 27 of them are free events and 18 are free events in Dublin for adults and families. Science Week 2015 takes place from 08-15 November. There are about 1392 events all over Ireland and the main target group are children and teenagers. Approx. 150 events are in Dublin, 27 of them are free events and 18 are free events in Dublin for adults and families. That is unfortunately only HALF the free events for adults and families than last year! Some of the events require pre-booking (and could be booked out already).<\/p>\n

Science Week 2015 takes place from 08-15 November. There are about 1392 events all over Ireland and the main target group are children and teenagers. Approx. 150 events are in Dublin, 27 of them are free events and 18 are free events in Dublin for adults and families. The DNA sculpture in the grounds of the National Botanic Gardens celebrates the role of Irish scientists in the search for the molecule of inheritance, as well as some remarkable insights into the origins of life. It was a lecture given by the physicist Erwin Schr\u00f6dinger at Trinity College Dublin in February 1943 that inspired the search for DNA and a number of Irish scientists were vital to the understanding and discovery of how living things ultimately work.<\/p>\n

Matthew Jebb will reveal some of the amazing stories captured in this sculpture as well as explaining what scientists currently think about how and where life first began.<\/p>\n

Science Week 2015 takes place from 08-15 November. There are about 1392 events all over Ireland and the main target group are children and teenagers. Young Bankers in Ireland – Is there any hope for us?

On 25 October, the Sunday Business Post printed a letter in the “Ask Emma” money advise column from a “Tim” in Meath.<\/p>\n

“Tim” wrote that he is 33 and single and just moved back from London to Ireland after 6 years in London. He is now living with his parents in Meath and just got a permanent job with a salary of EUR 42,000 in Dublin. Tim now wants to know from the newspaper’s Money Editor Emma Kennedy hos much he should save every month and what savings accounts options he has so that he can save for a deposit to buy his own place.<\/p>\n

Tim is 33 and seems to be intelligent enough to get a 42k job, so you could think that he shouldn’t find it too difficult to check a few banking websites and compare the available products. But on the other hand, it is a question that probably a good few people have and in addition, the banking industry is definitely not the best when it comes to clarity and simplicity. So, I guess “Tim’s” questions are normal and understandable questions.<\/p>\n

But wait…..! What is Tim’s new permanent job for 42k? Ohhh!! Tim’s new job is “Fund Administrator”. :-O<\/p>\n

If a Fund Administrator can’t read banking websites to find out about savings products and if a Fund Administrator needs to ask a newspaper (money) agony aunt how much money he should save, then we are in serious trouble in this country!! Odd!!<\/p>\n
