Hurray! This Dublin Event Guide is a little earlier than in other weeks. But, believe me, it is hard work to achieve that. This week I already started on Monday working on it, which is unfortunately not something I can do in normal weeks. I hope, though that it helps you to get this weeks e-mail sooner!<\/p>\n

And at the end of this week already the next month starts with another EUR 190 bill looming. The Feminist Film Festival takes place next weekend. The purpose is to counteract the mis\/under representation of women in film and to fundraise for the Sasne charity in Nepal. There will be a range of feature films, short films and even some free (but ticketed events) and a Panel Discussion.<\/p>\n

The show has been described as \u2018Mesmerising\u2019 (Metro Herald) \u2018Ingenious\u2019 Mail on Sunday and \u2018Effortlessly entertaining\u2019 (Examiner.com USA). It tells the fascinating tale of a young author who wrote a book of stories about the ordinary Dublin people – the rogues, the mitchers, the perverts and the gamblers – and then found he couldn’t get it printed. Until an English publisher who had previously rejected it spent one fraught night of conscience torn between his love of a wonderful book, his need to make money and his fear of losing everything.<\/p>\n

New BAD Marketing Image for Dublin – Things are getting worse!<\/h2>\n

Are the cents going? – Voluntary Rounding Scheme from 28 October<\/h2>\n
\n

I like the 1 cent and 2 cent coins. Sure they clutter your pocket or wallet, but I keep finding them on the street and despite the fact that the value is relatively small, it just feels good finding money on the street. ;-)
\nBut these coins are expensive to manufacture and to manage and because of that, there are moves of getting rid of them. Some countries already have done it and the Central Bank in Ireland will – after a trial in Wexford in 2013 – introduce a VOLUNTARY rounding scheme.<\/a><\/p>\n

Many people are VERY worried about it, so here are the facts without the panic:<\/p>\n

This will NOT lead to inflation and price increases are NOT the automatic consequence of this scheme.
\nFirst of all, it is – at least for the moment – voluntary, so you can opt out and still get your cents back. If you decide for rounding (and I expect that the shops will ask you), it will only apply to the total of your purchase not to the individual prices. So your item for 1.99 will still cost the same, but if you buy three items for 1.99 and the total is 5.97, then you will only have to pay 5.95 but ONLY if you pay with cash. If you pay by card, you will pay 5.97.
\nBecause the total will be rounded up when you buy other items that come to a price of 3.98 and you have to pay 4.00. It will average itself out.<\/p>\n

However, there are a few things to keep in mind:
\nIf you always buy just one item for 3.99, you will lose out over time. Also, if you want to game the system, you can do that at the moment as long as it is voluntary: Everytime your price is xx.96 or xx.97 you ask for it to get rounded and everytime the price is xx.98 or xx.99 you decide against rounding. That way you will make a profit. BUT you can only make a “profit” of 2 cent per transaction, so it will take a while to get rich that way.<\/p>\n

If you usually pay by card, it won’t affect you at all.<\/p>\n

With all that in mind, I suggest that you don’t listen to the people who panic about inflation and price increases, they are taking rubbish.<\/p>\n

Does the rounding make sense? Well, there are some advantages and some disadvantages and if most people opt out, it might be stopped again or if most people opt in, it will be made compulsory, so you possibly have some small bit of influence. It will already start on 28 October and that is soon, but as I said no reason to panic or worry! Watch it for a few weeks consciously and you will get the hang of it. ;-)<\/p>\n

The Bram Stoker Festival is back from 23-26 October with four days of Living Stories and four nights of Deadly Adventures. The day events are mostly family friendly events, talks and interactive experiences. And in the night the shenanigans turn a bit more macabre, ghostly and also come in the form of parties.<\/p>\n

+ Irish street-artist Maser will create an interactive installation in Smithfield.
\n+ Macnas, the street spectacle company from Galway will lead a festival parade on Monday.
\n+ Stokerland, a gothic theme park with street performers, will happen on Sunday for families on Wolfe Tone Square.
\n+ New Blood at the Projects Arts Centre on Sunday is a Halloween Party with art installations, live electronic acts and DJs.<\/p>\n

The current exhibition in the Science Gallery (08 Aug – 01 Nov) is called “SECRET – Nothing To See Here” and explores Privacy, Surveillance and Espionage.<\/p>\n

Once again it is a really interesting exhibition, that has some intriguing, fascinating and revealing exhibits. Be prepared to do a good bit of reading to understand the background of the exhibits OR get one of the well informed and extremely helpful mediators to explain the details to you.<\/p>\n

I would say that SECRET is for a slightly older audience (maybe 16+), but there are plenty of things that younger children will get as well if you make the effort to explain it to them.<\/p>\n

From an airport-style security conveyor belt that records what you have in your pocket; via a Wifi traffic eavesdropping device (Transparency Grenade); a secret handshake training device; books full of stolen passwords (you might find yours!?); a Crypto Bar where you can download cryptographic software, a privacy wall that hides your identity to an installation with notepads where the lines are microprinted lists of Iraqi civilian victims of the Iraq war, you will find lots of interesting secrets.<\/p>\n

Street Stories 1916 is a weekend of events to mark the 100th anniversary of the 1916 Rising. (It is not clear why this takes place 7 months too early, but it’s not that relevant.) The events include the launch of a commemorative magazine, public talks, walking tours, film screening and live music. Nearly all events will take place around Smithfield.<\/p>\n

The weekend started on Friday and the main day is on Saturday. There will be four sessions with talks on Saturday in venues around Smithfield Square and in the evening a gig with the Bionic Rats (not free!) in the Cobblestone will end the day.<\/p>\n

On Sunday a Walking Tour and Film Screening will complete the festival.<\/p>\n

The current exhibition in the Science Gallery (08 Aug – 01 Nov) is called “SECRET – Nothing To See Here” and explores Privacy, Surveillance and Espionage.<\/p>\n

Once again it is a really interesting exhibition, that has some intriguing, fascinating and revealing exhibits. Be prepared to do a good bit of reading to understand the background of the exhibits OR get one of the well informed and extremely helpful mediators to explain the details to you.<\/p>\n

I would say that SECRET is for a slightly older audience (maybe 16+), but there are plenty of things that younger children will get as well if you make the effort to explain it to them.<\/p>\n

From an airport-style security conveyor belt that records what you have in your pocket; via a Wifi traffic eavesdropping device (Transparency Grenade); a secret handshake training device; books full of stolen passwords (you might find yours!?); a Crypto Bar where you can download cryptographic software, a privacy wall that hides your identity to an installation with notepads where the lines are microprinted lists of Iraqi civilian victims of the Iraq war, you will find lots of interesting secrets.<\/p>\n

The Science Gallery has very visitor friendly opening hours of Tue-Fri 12:00-20:00 and Sat+Sun 12:00-18:00, so there are no excuses! ;-) Admission is free.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

Street Stories 1916 is a weekend of events to mark the 100th anniversary of the 1916 Rising. (It is not clear why this takes place 7 months too early, but it’s not that relevant.) The events include the launch of a commemorative magazine, public talks, walking tours, film screening and live music. Nearly all events will take place around Smithfield.<\/p>\n

The weekend started on Friday and the main day is on Saturday. There will be four sessions with talks on Saturday in venues around Smithfield Square and in the evening a gig with the Bionic Rats (not free!) in the Cobblestone will end the day.<\/p>\n

On Sunday a Walking Tour and Film Screening will complete the festival.<\/p>\n

Every year Dun Laoghaire Rathdown is inviting families to a Haunted Forest Walk in Marlay Park. There will be chills and freaks, lights and sound effects, on the 1.7km long walk. Come in Halloween gear but keep in mind that it is an outdoor event.<\/p>\n

Entry is free, but you need to have a wristband, Wristbands can be collected at the dlr Co Co Markets in Marlay Park on Saturday 17 October and Saturday 24 October from 09:00 each day. Wristbands will be available while stocks last on a strictly first come first served basis, limited to six per family. Half of the available supply will be distributed each Saturday.

This is the last Bank Holiday Monday in 2015 and you will have to wait until 28 March (Easter Monday) to get the next Monday off. Luckily we have Christmas, New Year’s Day and St. Patrick’s Day in between! ;-)<\/p>\n

The central event on October Bank Holiday is the Dublin Marathon. Not because soo many people from Dublin take part, but because it has quite some impact on the City Centre on Monday. From 2016 the Marathon will take place on Sunday of the same weekend (to attract more foreign participants), we’ll see what impact that has on other events on the Bank Holiday weekend.<\/p>\n

This year the Bram Stoker Festival got bigger and better and the Macnas parade on Monday is probably one of the main events for all non-Marathon runners.<\/p>\n

By the way, (nearly) all shops are usually open on the October Bank Holiday. Traffic rules like on a Monday apply, but buses and trains are on a weekend schedule. Pay & Display parking will not be enforced, but Bus Lanes, Loading Bays and certainly Wheelchair Parking spaces are off limits.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

On October Bank Holiday traditionally the Dublin City Marathon takes place and again more than 15,000 men and women will take part. The fastest runner will take approx. 2hrs and 15 minutes to run the full distance and the slowest walker will be back at the finish line about 7 hours after the start.<\/p>\n

The Start is at Fitzwilliam Square and the run then will go to Phoenix Park and via a long and windy route back to the Finish at Merrion Square. 42km is a long long way! The full route map can be found via this link http:\/\/www.dublinmarathon.ie\/the-course\/<\/a><\/p>\n

Admission as a participant is closed (and was not free), but there will be a number of “cheering zones” along the way and the map shows you where they are.<\/p>\n

This is the last year for the Dublin Marathon on a Monday. From 2016 it will be on the Sunday of the Bank Holiday weekend. The move was decided to attract more international runners.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

The Bram Stoker Festival is back from 23-26 October with four days of Living Stories and four nights of Deadly Adventures. The day events are mostly family friendly events, talks and interactive experiences. And in the night the shenanigans turn a bit more macabre, ghostly and also come in the form of parties.<\/p>\n

+ Irish street-artist Maser will create an interactive installation in Smithfield.
\n+ Macnas, the street spectacle company from Galway will lead a festival parade on Monday.
\n+ Stokerland, a gothic theme park with street performers, will happen on Sunday for families on Wolfe Tone Square.
\n+ New Blood at the Projects Arts Centre on Sunday is a Halloween Party with art installations, live electronic acts and DJs.<\/p>\n

“Maurice and Jane O\u2019Keeffe are principals of Irish Life and Lore, an organisation which has dedicated 25 years to the recording and archiving of oral history in Ireland. This has resulted in several books on the oral history of various areas of the country being published. Maurice will discuss the methodology of the compilation of oral history collections, and will also use audio examples to demonstrate the importance and value of the recorded testimony. Catch me if you Can – Citywide Street Game<\/h2>\n

Catch Me If You Can is a race through city streets, a citywide street game and it sounds soooooo interesting!<\/p>\n

This is how it works:<\/p>\n

You start as a Runner (in teams of up to 4) and you will try to make it to a series of checkpoints as fast as you can, while avoiding being caught by Chasers. But if you are caught by a Chaser, you will become a Chasers as well, turning to pursue your former friends and allies.
\nIt is a footrace, so only your own two feet and public transport are permitted. No bicycles, skates, cars or taxis.<\/p>\n

When you sign in, your picture will be taken and you will be given a map (indicating the checkpoints) and two ribbons. The Runner ribbon you tie on your arm at the beginning. It identifies that you are a Runner and it must be clearly visible. Hiding your ribbon is considered cheating. (The Chaser ribbon you hope to never use.)<\/p>\n

Runners are prison escapees. You’ve scaled the wall, but now you’ve got to earn your freedom. You’ll need cash, wheels, a new identity, a ticket out and an accomplice to get you out of the city<\/p>\n

When the event begins, we will tell you who to look for at the first checkpoint and give the signal to begin. You should immediately start moving to the first checkpoint. Once you reach it, you must find the Agent waiting with further instructions. When you do, they will give you one of your needed items; they will then tell you who to look for at the next checkpoint; and so on until you reach the end, where there will be drinks and merriment. Whoever reaches the end first wins.<\/p>\n

The people trying to stop you are the Chasers. Each Chaser wears a Chaser ribbon on their arm. If a Chaser tags you, you must give them your Runner ribbon as a trophy; you now put on your Chaser ribbon and become a Chaser yourself. Your job is to find and tag the other players, preventing them from safely reaching the finish.<\/p>\n

There are some areas where you will be safe from Chasers, including the checkpoints. While in these safe zones, you cannot tag or be tagged. You must go to the checkpoints in order. If you arrive at a checkpoint after the Agent has left, you might not be able to complete the game.<\/p>\n

Prizes will be awarded for top finishers and best chaser.<\/p>\n

It just sounds brilliant! And it gets better: Participation is free! But you have to make sure that you register soon, because there are limited places available.<\/p>\n

Drink Driving still ok in Ireland
\n<\/strong><\/p>\n

For a long long time it was completely normal in Ireland to drive your car with an alcohol level higher than you could walk with, but luckily significant progress was made in the last 20 years.<\/p>\n

The limits of milligrammes of alcohol per 100 millilitres of blood dropped steadily from 1978 to today (1978: 100 mg, 1994: 80mg, 2011: 50 mg) and you would hope that people start understanding more the seriousness of driving under the influence of alcohol.<\/p>\n

You would hope! BUT the figures and anecdotal evidence don’t seem to confirm that. We hear in the countryside drinking and driving is still a done thing and the figure of 20,000 people in court between January 2013 and May 2015 is FAR higher than it should be.<\/p>\n

But it gets worse! The Road Safety Authority has informed that out of the 20,000 people who definitely or most likely had more alcohol in them than allowed, only a measly 6,700 were actually convicted. That is just 40%. Shocking!<\/p>\n

The reason for the low numbers seems to be a pure technicalities in the process which indicates to me that the law makers have absolutely no interest in making the laws waterproof. Shocking!!<\/p>\n
