Hi all!<\/p>\n

Soooo many events!! There are more than 200 events in this Dublin Event Guide and if you look in the Upcoming Events section where I also mention some of the non-free festivals, the list is long there as well.<\/p>\n

Open House is one of the main events this weekend, but I want to mention it especially because often people hesitate going to it, thinking that it is too architecture focused. Nothing could be further from the truth! It is an architecture festival, but it is for everybody and the guided tours explain WHY a building was built that way and what the architect was thinking and that is really interesting. I did go to Busaras a few years ago and experienced the best tour ever and where lots of people think Busaras is an ugly building, to me it now looks completely different. So, give Open House a go! :-)<\/p>\n

And unfortunately I have to mention this again: Money! This month I got 5 donations until now, which is a total of 60 Euro, but in two weeks I need to pay EUR 190. So, I have just two weeks to find EUR 130. If you can help, please do<\/a>! There are also some sponsorship packets available if you or your company want to help a little more! Thanks!<\/p>\n

The show has been described as \u2018Mesmerising\u2019 (Metro Herald) \u2018Ingenious\u2019 Mail on Sunday and \u2018Effortlessly entertaining\u2019 (Examiner.com USA). It tells the fascinating tale of a young author who wrote a book of stories about the ordinary Dublin people – the rogues, the mitchers, the perverts and the gamblers – and then found he couldn’t get it printed. Until an English publisher who had previously rejected it spent one fraught night of conscience torn between his love of a wonderful book, his need to make money and his fear of losing everything.<\/p>\n

New Marketing Image for Dublin!<\/h2>\n

Soooo, Dublin has a new Marketing Image and a lot has changed. The first realisation in this You Tube clip here https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=w9vVo9kV_gI<\/a> is that Adventure is big and culture is small. Music and Arts is a side story to biking, kayaking, running, climbing etc. Pubs? They are completely erased from Dublin’s marketing. And 38 seconds out of the 78 second content show scenes that are NOT from the City but are nature\/adventure scenes from outside of Dublin.<\/p>\n

And the final scene, the logo, shows us that squiggles are in. First the odd new Eircom logo and now Dublin gets some squiggles too. Ohh and the seagulls feature in it too. Well, no wonder, considering that they are allegedly attacking people on a regular basis. ;-)<\/p>\n

The current exhibition in the Science Gallery (08 Aug – 01 Nov) is called “SECRET – Nothing To See Here” and explores Privacy, Surveillance and Espionage.<\/p>\n

Once again it is a really interesting exhibition, that has some intriguing, fascinating and revealing exhibits. Be prepared to do a good bit of reading to understand the background of the exhibits OR get one of the well informed and extremely helpful mediators to explain the details to you.<\/p>\n

I would say that SECRET is for a slightly older audience (maybe 16+), but there are plenty of things that younger children will get as well if you make the effort to explain it to them.<\/p>\n

From an airport-style security conveyor belt that records what you have in your pocket; via a Wifi traffic eavesdropping device (Transparency Grenade); a secret handshake training device; books full of stolen passwords (you might find yours!?); a Crypto Bar where you can download cryptographic software, a privacy wall that hides your identity to an installation with notepads where the lines are microprinted lists of Iraqi civilian victims of the Iraq war, you will find lots of interesting secrets.<\/p>\n

The Science Gallery has very visitor friendly opening hours of Tue-Fri 12:00-20:00 and Sat+Sun 12:00-18:00, so there are no excuses! ;-) Admission is free.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

It is a great event to look behind the facade and to find out more about the buildings in the city we live in. I call it the Culture Night for buildings. ;-)<\/p>\n

The current exhibition in the Science Gallery (08 Aug – 01 Nov) is called “SECRET – Nothing To See Here” and explores Privacy, Surveillance and Espionage.<\/p>\n

Once again it is a really interesting exhibition, that has some intriguing, fascinating and revealing exhibits. Be prepared to do a good bit of reading to understand the background of the exhibits OR get one of the well informed and extremely helpful mediators to explain the details to you.<\/p>\n

I would say that SECRET is for a slightly older audience (maybe 16+), but there are plenty of things that younger children will get as well if you make the effort to explain it to them.<\/p>\n

From an airport-style security conveyor belt that records what you have in your pocket; via a Wifi traffic eavesdropping device (Transparency Grenade); a secret handshake training device; books full of stolen passwords (you might find yours!?); a Crypto Bar where you can download cryptographic software, a privacy wall that hides your identity to an installation with notepads where the lines are microprinted lists of Iraqi civilian victims of the Iraq war, you will find lots of interesting secrets.<\/p>\n

The Science Gallery has very visitor friendly opening hours of Tue-Fri 12:00-20:00 and Sat+Sun 12:00-18:00, so there are no excuses! ;-) Admission is free.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

The Bram Stoker Festival is back from 23-26 October with four days of Living Stories and four nights of Deadly Adventures. The day events are mostly family friendly events, talks and interactive experiences. And in the night the shenanigans turn a bit more macabre, ghostly and also come in the form of parties.<\/p>\n

+ Irish street-artist Maser will create an interactive installation in Smithfield.
\n+ Macnas, the street spectacle company from Galway will lead a festival parade on Monday.
\n+ Stokerland, a gothic theme park with street performers, will happen on Sunday for families on Wolfe Tone Square.
\n+ New Blood at the Projects Arts Centre on Sunday is a Halloween Party with art installations, live electronic acts and DJs.<\/p>\n

And there are LOTS of other events.<\/p>\n

Some of the events are free, some are not and a good few need pre-booking, so check them out on the website below.
\nThe festival is an initiative of Dublin City Council in association with F\u00e1ilte Ireland.<\/p>\n

Street Stories 1916 is a weekend of events to mark the 100th anniversary of the 1916 Rising. (It is not clear why this takes place 7 months too early, but it’s not that relevant.) The events include the launch of our commemorative magazine, public talks, walking tours, film screening and live music. Nearly all events will take place around Smithfield.<\/p>\n

The weekend will start with a launch on Friday in the “Sacred Heart Chapel” on Church Street (There are a number of churches on Church Street, but I wasn’t able to find the Sacred Heart Chapel.)<\/p>\n

At the event there will be the launch of the 1916 Street Stories Festival and magazine \u20181916 in Stoneybatter, Smithfield and The Markets\u2019. Guest Speaker will be RTE\u2019s Joe Duffy and live music will come from the “Landless”, who sing traditional songs a-capella,<\/p>\n

Haunted Forest Walk – Samhain 2015 – Marlay Park<\/h2>\n

Every year Dun Laoghaire Rathdown is inviting families to a Haunted Forest Walk in Marlay Park. There will be chills and freaks, lights and sound effects, on the 1.7km long walk. Come in Halloween gear but keep in mind that it is an outdoor event.<\/p>\n

Entry is free, but you need to have a wristband, Wristbands can be collected at the dlr Co Co Markets in Marlay Park on Saturday 17 October and Saturday 24 October from 09:00 each day. Wristbands will be available while stocks last on a strictly first come first served basis, limited to six per family. Half of the available supply will be distributed each Saturday.
\nEntry time to queue for the Haunted Walk are printed on your wristband and will be 15:30, 16:30, 17:30 18:30 and 19:30.<\/p>\n

Ideal Homes Exhibition<\/h2>\n

The autumn edition of the Ideal Homes Exhibition takes place from Friday until Monday and if you pre-register, you can get in for free either on Friday or Monday. The link is http:\/\/idealhome.ie\/free-ticket-registration\/<\/a> Tickets are a pricey EUR 15 (Kids are free) for Saturday and Sunday, but if you pre-register you can get a 2-for-1 discount.<\/p>\n

The Ideal Homes Exhibition is particularly for home owners and gives ideas and advise for extensions, modernisations and enhancements. But you don’t have to own your home to be interested in making it nice. There are a wide variety of companies selling anything from home insulations to kitchen machines, food or even handbags and teeth whitening.<\/p>\n

Web Summit vs Irish Government
\n<\/strong><\/p>\n

When the Web Summit, Paddy Cosgrave’s yearly Internet conference, declared that they will move to Lisbon from 2016 after four successful years in Dublin, the surprise and even shock in Dublin was sizeable. Immediately there were speculations about Lisbon “buying” the event with subsidies or even direct payments to Cosgrave’s company, but after a few days it seemed to die down and there was not that much talk about it anymore.<\/p>\n

But maybe there was still a lot of rumbling going on behind the scenes OR it is an intentional marketing “trick” to bring the focus back onto the Web Summit: Suddenly – and to most people unexpectedly – Paddy Cosgrave released the e-mail correspondence<\/a> between him and a clearly very little interested Nick Reddy, who is the Taoiseach’s Private Secretary, in the run up to the announcement about the move to Lisbon.<\/p>\n

I am of the opinion that the Web Summit far outgrew Dublin and that the vast amount of 30,000 participants this November, will bring Dublin to its breakpoint. Neither the RDS, not the traffic and public transport infrastructure in the area is suitable for such a massive event. And with the goals of growing the conference to even 50-60,000 delegates, it was absolutely unavoidable that event would have to move. Dublin is too small for it and Ballsbridge is not the place where you can implement the traffic management plans that the Web Summit management expected.<\/p>\n

But it seems that despite this, Paddy Cosgrave didn’t want to move and desperately tried to get the current Irish Government to listen to him and to help him. He repeatedly stresses that he is not looking for money and that instead he is looking for help with Traffic Management, Public Transport, the over pricing by hotels and the WiFi in the RDS. He received no support. Maybe that was because there IS no solution to the problem, but there was not even the attempt to help or to fight to keep the Web Summit. The Taoiseach’s Private Secretary couldn’t have been any less interested.<\/p>\n

The most interesting document in this exchange of e-mails<\/a> however is a mail from 03 September. I strongly recommend that you read it on Page 9. It shows how totally incompetent the Irish Government behaved in comparison to governments from other countries in making good use of this huge event. The ignorance and incompetence is truly shocking!<\/p>\n

Sure, we all know that Enda Kenny and his accomplices are not in the premier league when it comes to statesmanship or management skills, but the picture described in this mail from 03 September makes you wonder if they even make it into the lowest league.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n
