Hi all!<\/p>\n

This week could be full of good news and I won’t even consider the “or”. There is the soccer game against Poland, the rugby game against France and there is a budget announcement on Tuesday (and possible an announcement of a General Election).<\/p>\n

Let’s dream for a moment: Ireland will win against Poland and will qualify for the European Soccer Championship, Ireland will win the rugby against France and we get a significant tax reduction on Tuesday (I did say dream, right? ;-) )<\/p>\n

How would you order these three things by priority? I.e. what do you want most? I have no influence over any of these three, but I did what I could to bring you a packed Dublin Event Guide with plenty of free events, so that even if none of the three works out, you can STILL have a great week! :-)<\/p>\n

And here is my weekly appeal to you: These are two areas the Dublin Event Guide needs your continued help with: Your donations<\/a> help paying the bills for sending the Dublin Event Guide every week, so please help if you can. Just 1 Euro per month (12 Euro per year) would be great. Not very many subscribers are prepared to or able to help, so please don’t rely on others!<\/p>\n

This weekend ou HAVE to go to Sculpture in Context if you haven’t been there yet and if you want to see it. It is already the last weekend of that great exhibition in the Botanic Garden. And the Fusion Sunday World Culture market is happening again, I really like that market.<\/p>\n

They will tell the story of Dracula and all the history of Dracula’s origins and influences from the Great Famine to the Cholora Epidemics and its Irish Writer Bram Stoker’s origins.<\/p>\n

It is a great show and there are also exhibits of memorabilia from Dracula and Bram Stoker. Even a lock of Bram Stoker is in Castle Dracula.<\/p>\n

I have been at the show in Castle Dracula before and it was a brilliant, mesmerising and spooky experience. I definitely recommend it!<\/p>\n

No Christmas Market at St. Stephen’s Green in 2015?<\/h2>\n
\n

Last year Dublintown pushed the Christmas Market at St. Stephen’s Green in a big way and with massive goals.<\/p>\n

I quote “Dublin\u2019s first city centre traditional Christmas market expected to attract an additional 600,000 visitors and generate up to EUR 20 million in revenue for Dublin businesses, creating 150 seasonal jobs.” and I remeber even reading that Dublin will in a few years be a top Christmas market destination for tourists.<\/p>\n

Well, it didn’t happen! Traders were very unhappy with the market, but on top of that it didn’t attract the masses and it certainly wasn’t a Christmas market any Christmas market expert would write home about. So many things were done wrongly! The location was wrong, the stall selection was wrong, the food business was the wrong one. I could go on and on. (Maybe I should provide my services as Christmas Market Consultant! ;-) Dublin needs one!)<\/p>\n

Yesterday Dublintown sent out their Press Release regarding Christmas 2015 and there is no word about a Christmas market in it.<\/p>\n

The mess that the Luas work causes doesn’t help at or near St. Stephen’s Green , but Dublintown (which is the trader organisation for Dublin) didn’t listen to Samuel Beckett who said “Ever tried. Ever failed. No matter. Try Again. Fail again. Fail better.” The experiment last year failed (to a degree), but it would be better to improve it than to give up, at least Mr Beckett thought so!<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n

General Election and Sport<\/h2>\n

There are speculations that if Ireland wins in the soccer match against Poland on Sunday it is near certain that the next General Election will be in November. And if Ireland also wins in the Rugby match on the same day, then it is a near certainty that the current government wants to use the enthusiasm in the country and quickly arrange for an election.<\/p>\n

It is a very odd scenario that the Taoiseach can decide whenever he wants to have an election. The current term of the Dail is coming to an end on 09 March 2016, so an election has to take place before 08 April 2016, So, wouldn’t it make sense to have laws in place to complete the term before an election instead of deciding a date based on sports results?<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n

Sculpture in Context is Ireland\u2019s largest outdoor sculpture exhibition and it is a brilliant exhibition in the beautiful surroundings of the National Botanic Gardens, Some of Ireland\u2019s best artists are showing new work and the sculptures are displayed throughout the gardens, ponds, Great Palm House and Curvilinear Range, with the smaller works exhibited in the in the gallery in the Visitors Centre.<\/p>\n

The current exhibition in the Science Gallery (08 Aug – 01 Nov) is called “SECRET – Nothing To See Here” and explores Privacy, Surveillance and Espionage.<\/p>\n

Once again it is a really interesting exhibition, that has some intriguing, fascinating and revealing exhibits. Be prepared to do a good bit of reading to understand the background of the exhibits OR get one of the well informed and extremely helpful mediators to explain the details to you.<\/p>\n

I would say that SECRET is for a slightly older audience (maybe 16+), but there are plenty of things that younger children will get as well if you make the effort to explain it to them.<\/p>\n

From an airport-style security conveyor belt that records what you have in your pocket; via a Wifi traffic eavesdropping device (Transparency Grenade); a secret handshake training device; books full of stolen passwords (you might find yours!?); a Crypto Bar where you can download cryptographic software, a privacy wall that hides your identity to an installation with notepads where the lines are microprinted lists of Iraqi civilian victims of the Iraq war, you will find lots of interesting secrets.<\/p>\n

The Science Gallery has very visitor friendly opening hours of Tue-Fri 12:00-20:00 and Sat+Sun 12:00-18:00, so there are no excuses! ;-) Admission is free.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

This is the last weekend of Scultpure in Context 2015!!<\/p>\n

Sculpture in Context is Ireland\u2019s largest outdoor sculpture exhibition and it is a brilliant exhibition in the beautiful surroundings of the National Botanic Gardens, Some of Ireland\u2019s best artists are showing new work and the sculptures are displayed throughout the gardens, ponds, Great Palm House and Curvilinear Range, with the smaller works exhibited in the in the gallery in the Visitors Centre.<\/p>\n

The current exhibition in the Science Gallery (08 Aug – 01 Nov) is called “SECRET – Nothing To See Here” and explores Privacy, Surveillance and Espionage.<\/p>\n

Once again it is a really interesting exhibition, that has some intriguing, fascinating and revealing exhibits. Be prepared to do a good bit of reading to understand the background of the exhibits OR get one of the well informed and extremely helpful mediators to explain the details to you.<\/p>\n

I would say that SECRET is for a slightly older audience (maybe 16+), but there are plenty of things that younger children will get as well if you make the effort to explain it to them.<\/p>\n

From an airport-style security conveyor belt that records what you have in your pocket; via a Wifi traffic eavesdropping device (Transparency Grenade); a secret handshake training device; books full of stolen passwords (you might find yours!?); a Crypto Bar where you can download cryptographic software, a privacy wall that hides your identity to an installation with notepads where the lines are microprinted lists of Iraqi civilian victims of the Iraq war, you will find lots of interesting secrets.<\/p>\n

The Science Gallery has very visitor friendly opening hours of Tue-Fri 12:00-20:00 and Sat+Sun 12:00-18:00, so there are no excuses! ;-) Admission is free.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

How do you setup and run a community garden? Hear about the lessons learned from two inspiring community garden projects: one in Dublin city centre and the other in rural Co. Clare.<\/p>\n

You will start with a talking tour of the NCAD Community Garden on Thomas Street, hosted by Rian Coulter and Fabian Strunden. There you will harvest some of the produce from the garden and head over to the Fumbally Stables (a ten minute walk).<\/p>\n

At the Stables, Matt Smith and Fergal Smith from Moy Hill Community Garden will talk from their perspective about what community is, how to succeed in keeping it going, and the lessons learned overcoming challenges in setting up Moy Hill.<\/p>\n

Meanwhile a chef will work with what you have harvested from Thomas Street, along with some fresh veg brought up from Moy Hill, to create a dish for everyone to share.<\/p>\n

Moy Hill Community Garden {http:\/\/www.growing.ie<\/a>} is a group of community volunteers that have created a non-profit project in the Moy Hill Community, close to Lehinch, in County Clare. They were donated 2 acres of land by a local hero for a field and community garden that are used for growing organic and native fruits and vegetables, as well as for planting a native tree orchard to preserve our Irish heritage.<\/div>\n

The Festival of Inclusion in Dun Laoghaire (10-17 October) really includes just everything and doesn’t seem to focus on anything at all.<\/p>\n

There are events for Refugees, Men, Women, History Lovers, Alcoholics, Older People, Childcarers, Africans, Cancer Sufferers, Blind people, Grandparents, Ga y people, Holistic medicine followers and you wonder if some of the groups that are involved in the Festival of Inclusion were even ever EXcluded, considering that the events suggest that we have to INclude them again.<\/p>\n

The Dublin Animation Film Festival is most likely back (“most likely” because the website doesn’t seem to be fully up-to-date) on Friday and Saturday 16+17 October. The film screenings and award ceremony are not free, but if I remember it right, then there were some free talks on the Friday in the IADT in previous years.<\/p>\n

My suggestion: If you are interested in maiking Animated Films, check out the website below on Monday or Tuesday. If it hasn’t been updated, maybe this year’s festival is not taking place and if it is updated, you should find all relevant information.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

The Festival of Inclusion in Dun Laoghaire (10-17 October) really includes just everything and doesn’t seem to focus on anything at all.<\/p>\n

There are events for Refugees, Men, Women, History Lovers, Alcoholics, Older People, Childcarers, Africans, Cancer Sufferers, Blind people, Grandparents, Ga y people, Holistic medicine followers and you wonder if some of the groups that are involved in the Festival of Inclusion were even ever EXcluded, considering that the events suggest that we have to INclude them again.<\/p>\n

Long Boat Quay: Fire Safety, Dublin City and Incompetence
\n<\/strong><\/p>\n

Long Boat Quay is an apartment block on Sir Rogerson’s Quay that was built in 2006 by now-bankrupt builder Bernard McNamara and the building is now in the news because Dublin City has informed the residents that the apartment owners would have to pay EUR 4mio to make the building fire-proof or they will get evicted.<\/p>\n

This is not the first time something like that is happening. Priory Hall in North Dublin is currently costing Dublin City 27mio to refurbish it and the residents were evicted there as well.<\/p>\n

But how can something like that happen? Why are plans not checked before planning permission is given or before the building is built? Why is a building not checked before people are moving in to make sure that the building meets the specs? If efficient checks were part of the process at the right time, it should never happen that a building is later found inadequate!<\/p>\n

Reading articles about Long Boat Quay, you wonder if the situation is not a good bit more complicated than it appears at first: Allegedly<\/a> Dublin Fire Brigade gave the Ok for the building in 2011, but then seemingly withdrew this Ok in 2013. Could that be? That would be shocking and suddenly a large part of the fault would be with the Dublin Fire Brigade or Dublin City.<\/p>\n

It also seems that where suddenly there is such a hurry now, last year things were seen less critical: The Irish Examiner<\/a> writes that “an internal Dublin Fire Brigade report recommended the serving of a fire notice on Longboat Quay in May of last year”. So more than a year nothing happened and the building was not seen as dangerous, but now it is so urgent that the residents need to move out by 01 November?<\/p>\n

The Irish Examiner article lists some of the defects that the Dublin Fire Brigade found, but when an RTE programme<\/a> had a consultant engineer visit the place, he listed completely different issues. The enginneer said here that the building had been fitted with a fire detection and warning system designed to \u201csuit a suburban semi-detached house, not an apartment in a complex in the centre of Dublin\u201d. And that “most of the doors in each apartment looked fire-resistant but had no fire or smoke seals” and he was “particularly concerned” about the fact that there is no door between the kitchen and living areas.<\/p>\n

RTE’s engineer obviously has different eyes or had a different focus than the Dublin Fire Brigade, but if the engineer RTE got is right, then I better quickly look for a tent or a bridge to sleep under, because the apartment I live in is then definitely not safe: One single smoke alarm per apartment; no automatic smoke vents in the public area; no fire seals at apartment doors and the door to the kitchen has never been closed. My eviction notice must be in the post! And what about apartments where kitchen and dining room are one?<\/p>\n

Are there maybe different standards applied? Or are the experts checking these newer apartments the type of Health&Safety nuts that get palpitations when someone uses a bread knife or lights a candle with an OPEN FLAME. *shock horror*<\/p>\n

There is incompetence somewhere, but can we be certain that we have identified the contributor with the highest incompetence yet?<\/p>\n
