October!?!?! Where did the year go?<\/p>\n

Most of us feel that years are passing faster and faster, but I feel this year came with an extra speed boost button and someone has his\/her finger firmly on this button. I certainly had planned more for this year than I have achieved until now. Do you feel the same? Well, we still have another 3 months to turn it around, but it does require focus and dedication.<\/p>\n

One of my goals was to spread the word about the Dublin Event Guide further and while – with your help – this was achieved to a certain degree, I think we have to give it another big push. See, the more people use the Dublin Event Guide, the more event organisers will consider this big group in their planning. That will increase free events, but it will also increase the number of competitions and it will allow me to provide more and better information to you.<\/p>\n

So, here is my weekly appeal to you: These are two areas the Dublin Event Guide needs your continued help with: Your donations<\/a> help paying the bills for sending the Dublin Event Guide every week, so please help if you can. Just 1 Euro per month (12 Euro per year) would be great. Not very many subscribers are prepared to or able to help, so please don’t rely on others!<\/p>\n

And without you spreading the word we would have never reached 24,000 subscribers and 60,000 Facebook Likes. But it is just the start!! The goals are MUCH bigger than that! :-) Imagine if everyone just got ONE additional person to subscribe to the Dublin Event Guide (for Free Events). This weekend check out the Hard Working Class Heroes today, there are lots of free gigs throughout the day. The Okoberfest ends on Sunday, so go if you have never experienced it. The Sculpture in Context exhibiton in the National Botanic Gardens is still on (not much longer) and Secret in the Science Gallery and you should them also on your list.<\/p>\n

They will tell the story of Dracula and all the history of Dracula’s origins and influences from the Great Famine to the Cholora Epidemics and its Irish Writer Bram Stoker’s origins.<\/p>\n

It is a great show and there are also exhibits of memorabilia from Dracula and Bram Stoker. Even a lock of Bram Stoker is in Castle Dracula.<\/p>\n

I have been at the show in Castle Dracula before and it was a brilliant, mesmerising and spooky experience. I definitely recommend it!<\/p>\n

The Liberties part of Dublin 8 willg et a new park and it will be called “Weaver Park”, at least for now.<\/p>\n

“The main features of the park include a central lawn that acts as a multi-functional space, a fenced play area for small children, a new pavilion and terrace at the entrance from Cork Street and micro wooded and planted areas.”<\/p>\n

UPC became Virgin Media<\/h2>\n
\n

UPC became Virgin Media on Thursday when Richard Branson was over to promote the launch, but don’t think Branson’s Golden Touch will now turn UPC, a company that is not very popular in the public mind, into a star performer.<\/p>\n

Branson owns a tiny stake in the company, is not on the board of Virgin Media and is also not the CEO of the company. Instead he just has a licensing deal that allows Liberty Global (who already owned UPC before this “transition”) to use the Virgin brand.<\/p>\n

So, what will change? Absolutely nothing as a consequence from the re-branding. If Liberty Global wants to change the quality of service the company provides they can (and should) do that, but the name change was not required and has nothing to do with it.<\/p>\n

Maybe they hope that they get a new chance because people think that it is now a new company? Maybe we are meant to have hope in Richard Branson and therefore might give the company a new chance? Currently UPC is in the Top 10 of the Irish companies with the worst reputation.

Positive Ageing Week<\/h2>\n

Positive Ageing Week takes place from 01-09 October and comes with a good few events all over Ireland. The AgeAction website at https:\/\/www.ageaction.ie\/positive-ageing-week-2015<\/a> gives some more details and it also has a list of all events.<\/p>\n

The events are all in a big Google Doc spreadsheet and if we assume for a moment that among the target audience there might be some people that are not totally whizz-kids (aged ones!) then a Google Spreadsheet must be one of the worst ways of presenting information. A pity, because the list of events seems to be long.<\/p>\n

For Dublin there are 74 events in this spreadsheet, but they are not all free and – to be honest – I found it so painful to search through the list that I gave up and I predict the target group will do the same. Pity!<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<\/tbody>\n<\/table>\n\n\n\n

Sculpture in Context is Ireland\u2019s largest outdoor sculpture exhibition and it is a brilliant exhibition in the beautiful surroundings of the National Botanic Gardens, Some of Ireland\u2019s best artists are showing new work and the sculptures are displayed throughout the gardens, ponds, Great Palm House and Curvilinear Range, with the smaller works exhibited in the in the gallery in the Visitors Centre.<\/p>\n

The Ireland-Spain-LatinAmerica – ISLA Literary Festival is back the Instituto Cervantes and in some other venues. The theme this year is “Memory” and over three days nearly 20 authors from Spain, Latin America and Ireland will feature.<\/p>\n

There will be talks, discussions, film screenings, writing workshops and literary strolls and most events are free.<\/p>\n

The large number of round table discussions, I won’t list separately in this Dublin Event Guide, so please check the programme on the website below for that. The hugely popular Oktoberfest in Dublin takes place from 17 Sept – 04 Oct again. It is a German Beer Festival with Erdinger Weissbr\u00e4u Beer (including alcohol-free wheat beer), lots of German Bavarian Food and authentic Bavarian music.<\/p>\n

Opening hours are Mon-Thurs 12:00-23:30, Fri+Sat: 12:00-00:30, Sun 12:00-22:30.<\/p>\n

The best place to experience the festival is in the Festival Tent on the platform in George’s Dock. But because the yearly festival is soo popular, there are at times long queues due to severe admission restrictions (quantity of people). Last year the queues already started at 17:30. Luckily around George’s Dock are more food and drink stalls so that you don’t HAVE to be in the Festival tent to enjoy the event.<\/p>\n

Admission is free, but after 22:00 an odd meal voucher system kicks in: You will have to buy a wristband for EUR 6 that gives you a EUR 5 food voucher (and 1 Euro goes to charity). Allegedly licensing rules force them to do that.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

The current exhibition in the Science Gallery (08 Aug – 01 Nov) is called “SECRET – Nothing To See Here” and explores Privacy, Surveillance and Espionage.<\/p>\n

Once again it is a really interesting exhibition, that has some intriguing, fascinating and revealing exhibits. Be prepared to do a good bit of reading to understand the background of the exhibits OR get one of the well informed and extremely helpful mediators to explain the details to you.<\/p>\n

I would say that SECRET is for a slightly older audience (maybe 16+), but there are plenty of things that younger children will get as well if you make the effort to explain it to them.<\/p>\n

From an airport-style security conveyor belt that records what you have in your pocket; via a Wifi traffic eavesdropping device (Transparency Grenade); a secret handshake training device; books full of stolen passwords (you might find yours!?); a Crypto Bar where you can download cryptographic software, a privacy wall that hides your identity to an installation with notepads where the lines are microprinted lists of Iraqi civilian victims of the Iraq war, you will find lots of interesting secrets.<\/p>\n

The Science Gallery has very visitor friendly opening hours of Tue-Fri 12:00-20:00 and Sat+Sun 12:00-18:00, so there are no excuses! ;-) Admission is free.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

The Ireland-Spain-LatinAmerica – ISLA Literary Festival is back the Instituto Cervantes and in some other venues. The theme this year is “Memory” and over three days nearly 20 authors from Spain, Latin America and Ireland will feature.<\/p>\n

There will be talks, discussions, film screenings, writing workshops and literary strolls and most events are free.<\/p>\n

The hugely popular Oktoberfest in Dublin takes place from 17 Sept – 04 Oct again. It is a German Beer Festival with Erdinger Weissbr\u00e4u Beer (including alcohol-free wheat beer), lots of German Bavarian Food and authentic Bavarian music.<\/p>\n

Opening hours are Mon-Thurs 12:00-23:30, Fri+Sat: 12:00-00:30, Sun 12:00-22:30.<\/p>\n

The best place to experience the festival is in the Festival Tent on the platform in George’s Dock. But because the yearly festival is soo popular, there are at times long queues due to severe admission restrictions (quantity of people). Last year the queues already started at 17:30. Luckily around George’s Dock are more food and drink stalls so that you don’t HAVE to be in the Festival tent to enjoy the event.<\/p>\n

Admission is free, but after 22:00 an odd meal voucher system kicks in: You will have to buy a wristband for EUR 6 that gives you a EUR 5 food voucher (and 1 Euro goes to charity). Allegedly licensing rules force them to do that.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

The current exhibition in the Science Gallery (08 Aug – 01 Nov) is called “SECRET – Nothing To See Here” and explores Privacy, Surveillance and Espionage.<\/p>\n

Once again it is a really interesting exhibition, that has some intriguing, fascinating and revealing exhibits. Be prepared to do a good bit of reading to understand the background of the exhibits OR get one of the well informed and extremely helpful mediators to explain the details to you.<\/p>\n

I would say that SECRET is for a slightly older audience (maybe 16+), but there are plenty of things that younger children will get as well if you make the effort to explain it to them.<\/p>\n

From an airport-style security conveyor belt that records what you have in your pocket; via a Wifi traffic eavesdropping device (Transparency Grenade); a secret handshake training device; books full of stolen passwords (you might find yours!?); a Crypto Bar where you can download cryptographic software, a privacy wall that hides your identity to an installation with notepads where the lines are microprinted lists of Iraqi civilian victims of the Iraq war, you will find lots of interesting secrets.<\/p>\n

The Science Gallery has very visitor friendly opening hours of Tue-Fri 12:00-20:00 and Sat+Sun 12:00-18:00, so there are no excuses! ;-) Admission is free.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

“Extreme Threats” is a talk by Prof. Mike Tipton (University of Portsmouth, UK) in which he will discuss the extreme environmental threats our home, the Earth, has for us, their origins, consequences and ways of mitigating them.<\/p>\n

We perceive Earth as a \u201cblue planet\u201d, an oasis amongst otherwise inhospitable and indifferent spheres. However, the idea of an Eden-like home that we have evolved to be in harmony with, that nurtures us as we care for it, is some way from the truth.<\/p>\n

“On one side of the ecological coin we have the damage we do to our world by our very existence. On the other side we have the fact that 70% of our planet is covered in water, with an average ocean depth of 4,000 metres. Light penetrates only to about 80 metres into water, so most of our planet is in permanent darkness. The rest of it is in intermittent darkness with day and night. Only 15% of the surface of the Earth is not water, desert, ice or mountain. For humans, a sub-tropical, 1-G, low altitude, air-breathing homeothermic animal, most of our home represents a hostile place.”<\/p>\n

The Kilmacurragh Estate in Wicklow, once the seat of the Acton family, is a satellite garden to the National Botanic Gardens, Glasnevin. The gardens, once the centrepiece of the 5,500 acre estate fell into serious decline following the death of two Acton brothers on the European battle fields. Seamus O’Brien recounts their story and the recent restoration of the famous gardens at Kilmacurragh.<\/p>\n

Seamus O’Brien is Head Gardener at the National Botanic Gardens, Kilmacurragh, Co. Wicklow. He is Ireland’s leading authority on the flora of China and has travelled widely across North America, Chile, China, the Himalayas, Australia, Tasmania and New Zealand to study the flora of those regions.<\/p>\n

60,000!!! …at Lisdoonvarna Matchmaking Festival!

A few days ago I read that 60,000 people were at the Lisdoonvarna Matchmaking Festival and I find this number just incredible. Nobody knows how many people were really there, so this number could be as euphemistically wrong as the 500,000 that allegedly see the St. Patrick’s Day every year, but even if it was only 20,000, that’s a hell of a lot of people looking for a partner. And if you keep in mind that Lisdoonvarna has less than 1000 inhabitants, the number gets even more significance.<\/p>\n

For blow-ins (a.k.a foreigners) like myself, let me tell you a little bit about the Lisdoonvarna Match Making Festival. I am not an expert, but this is what I understand: It is a yearly event in the last week of September and it is running for 159 (!!) years. For these 159 years human match makers with big books have created matches and they are a disappearing breed, everyone seems to be talking about Willie Daly, one of the match makers as if he is the last man standing in that trade.<\/p>\n

I always had the impression that this was a festival for old farmers with money and American women who wanted some of it (or was it the other way around????). But with up to 60,000 visitors this clearly must have moved on from there and reaches a much younger audience.<\/p>\n

Clearly pubs, social circles, Internet dating and all the other methods have failed the 60,000, but what is it that gets thousands to hand their love life over to Willie Daly? The mind boggles! SIXTY THOUSAND!!?? That’s mad, Ted!<\/p>\n<\/div>\n
