I have to say it at some stage and I was trying to hold back as long as possible, but I can’t any longer:<\/p>\n

Do you realise that it is less than 3 months until Christmas?? :-O I know! It is a shock, right? And it is at least as shocking that Brown Thomas already have their Christmas shop open for quite some weeks. But see, they have nothing else to sell and leaving the floor empty wouldn’t look good, so they really are between a rock and a hard place. LOL<\/p>\n

Anyway, there is a lot more to focus on before Christmas (but it does freak me out sometimes how fast time moves!). This week moving time and looking back on it is coming up at the Dublin History Festival. Do you regularly check the Joerg’s Picks? You see there what I have on my short list.<\/p>\n

And thanks a lot again for the wonderful people that helped with donations last week, It is a struggle every month and it seems to get tougher to get the money, so I appeciate your help hugely!<\/p>\n

Here is my weekly appeal to you: These are two areas the Dublin Event Guide needs your continued help with: Your donations<\/a> help paying the bills for sending the Dublin Event Guide every week, so please help if you can. Just 1 Euro per month (12 Euro per year) would be great. Not very many subscribers are prepared to or able to help, so please don’t rely on others!<\/p>\n

This weekend the People’s Art Exhibition is back at St. Stephen’s Green. If you like history, you will love the Dublin History Festival.<\/p>\n

In Ranelagh is a Garden party to finish the Arts Festival. The Oktoberfest, Sculpture in Context and the SECRET Science Gallery Exhibition are still continuing and there is another German Navy ship in Dublin, this time it is not a sailing ship, but a more modern Navy Vessel, called the “Ludwigshafen am Rhein”. And Ludwigshafen is quite near to where I am from. ;-)<\/p>\n

Ah and the Dublin Flea Market is making its monthly appearance and the Vegetarian Day Festival is a yearly event.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

Two of Dublin’s most soulful groups will be in the Bello Bar for a gig on Sunday 27 Sept. They are “Danny G & the Major 7ths” and “Pia Dunne and the Eleusians”.<\/p>\n

Danny G is Daniel Groenland, a singer, flautist, guitarist and composer who was with the great funk band Mob Fandango and still performs with the African-trad fusion outfit Tig Linn and the Discovery Gospel Choir. His band, the Major 7ths, love harmonies and grooves and the 7-10 musicians in a line-up with four of them singing, will bring you the soulful sounds of Neo-Soul artists like D\u2019Angelo and Dilla, as well as the old classics like Marvin Gaye and Curtis Mayfield.<\/p>\n

Pia Dunne is fronting the Elusians that consist of several backing singers and a lineup of jazzy musicians. Pia is a song writer and an outstanding soul, blues, jazz and folk singer with a smooth and melodic voice that makes you want to listen for hours.<\/p>\n

I am not too sure, however, if an events list in the form of a Google Doc spreadsheet is really the best and suitable way to provide this information. Five times this year the \u201cPeople\u2019s Art 2015″ exhibition will take place. It is an art exhibition on the rails\/fence of St. Stephen\u2019s Green.<\/p>\n

Visiting the People\u2019s Art Exhibition is free and you will be able to admire (and buy) a huge amount of art works. The event starts close to 11:00 and typically finishes around 17:00, it runs from Friday until Sunday with the main activity on Saturday and Sunday.<\/p>\n

People\u2019s Art Dublin is a voluntary, part time, non profit making group, brought together by Dublin City Council to promote the visual arts to the public of Dublin.<\/p>\n

A huge variety of art\/paintings are displayed and if the weather is nice it is a great art-filled stroll around Stephen\u2019s Green. Definitely recommended!<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

The Dublin Festival of History 2015 takes place from 25 Sept until 11 October. On 26 September 2014, 43 students from a teacher-training college were participating in a demonstration when they were rounded up by the police and – according to reports – handed over to Guerreros Unidos, a criminal gang of drug traffickers. They were never seen again. Their disappearance is showing what a close cooperation exists between the state including the police and paramilitary drug gangs, despite the alleged “war on drugs”.<\/p>\n

The hugely popular Oktoberfest in Dublin takes place from 17 Sept – 04 Oct again. It is a German Beer Festival with Erdinger Weissbr\u00e4u Beer (including alcohol-free wheat beer), lots of German Bavarian Food and authentic Bavarian music.<\/p>\n

Opening hours are Mon-Thurs 12:00-23:30, Fri+Sat: 12:00-00:30, Sun 12:00-22:30.<\/p>\n

The best place to experience the festival is in the Festival Tent on the platform in George’s Dock. But because the yearly festival is soo popular, there are at times long queues due to severe admission restrictions (quantity of people). Last year the queues already started at 17:30. Luckily around George’s Dock are more food and drink stalls so that you don’t HAVE to be in the Festival tent to enjoy the event. Pre-booking is possible, but check the cost.<\/p>\n

Admission is free, but after 22:00 an odd meal voucher system kicks in: You will have to buy a wristband for EUR 6 that gives you a EUR 5 food voucher (and 1 Euro goes to charity). Allegedly licensing rules force them to do that, but have we heard of any other events or pubs where you need to buy meal vouchers?<\/p>\n

I get my yearly fix of Bavarian food at the Oktoberfest. The Schweinshaxn (pigs trotter) is a must for me, but just once a year. ;-)<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

The current exhibition in the Science Gallery (08 Aug – 01 Nov) is called “SECRET – Nothing To See Here” and explores Privacy, Surveillance and Espionage.<\/p>\n

Once again it is a really interesting exhibition, that has some intriguing, fascinating and revealing exhibits. Be prepared to do a good bit of reading to understand the background of the exhibits OR get one of the well informed and extremely helpful mediators to explain the details to you.<\/p>\n

I would say that SECRET is for a slightly older audience (maybe 16+), but there are plenty of things that younger children will get as well if you make the effort to explain it to them.<\/p>\n

From an airport-style security conveyor belt that records what you have in your pocket; via a Wifi traffic eavesdropping device (Transparency Grenade); a secret handshake training device; books full of stolen passwords (you might find yours!?); a Crypto Bar where you can download cryptographic software, a privacy wall that hides your identity to an installation with notepads where the lines are microprinted lists of Iraqi civilian victims of the Iraq war, you will find lots of interesting secrets.<\/p>\n

The Science Gallery has very visitor friendly opening hours of Tue-Fri 12:00-20:00 and Sat+Sun 12:00-18:00, so there are no excuses! ;-) Admission is free.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

The 90m long 1850 tonne German Navy Vessel “Ludwigshafen am Rhein” was meant to visit Dun Laoghaire this weekend (from 25-28 September), but diverted instead to Dublin.<\/p>\n

Originally it was also planned that there would be two Open Ship events on Saturday (13:00-17:00) and Sunday (14:00-16:00), but it is not clear if these two opportunities to visit the ship will still be there. But check it out, there is still a good chance.<\/p>\n

The hugely popular Oktoberfest in Dublin takes place from 17 Sept – 04 Oct again. It is a German Beer Festival with Erdinger Weissbr\u00e4u Beer (including alcohol-free wheat beer), lots of German Bavarian Food and authentic Bavarian music.<\/p>\n

Opening hours are Mon-Thurs 12:00-23:30, Fri+Sat: 12:00-00:30, Sun 12:00-22:30.<\/p>\n

The best place to experience the festival is in the Festival Tent on the platform in George’s Dock. But because the yearly festival is soo popular, there are at times long queues due to severe admission restrictions (quantity of people). Last year the queues already started at 17:30. Luckily around George’s Dock are more food and drink stalls so that you don’t HAVE to be in the Festival tent to enjoy the event. Pre-booking is possible, but check the cost.<\/p>\n

Admission is free, but after 22:00 an odd meal voucher system kicks in: You will have to buy a wristband for EUR 6 that gives you a EUR 5 food voucher (and 1 Euro goes to charity). Allegedly licensing rules force them to do that, but have we heard of any other events or pubs where you need to buy meal vouchers?<\/p>\n

I get my yearly fix of Bavarian food at the Oktoberfest. The Schweinshaxn (pigs trotter) is a must for me, but just once a year. ;-)<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

The current exhibition in the Science Gallery (08 Aug – 01 Nov) is called “SECRET – Nothing To See Here” and explores Privacy, Surveillance and Espionage.<\/p>\n

Once again it is a really interesting exhibition, that has some intriguing, fascinating and revealing exhibits. Be prepared to do a good bit of reading to understand the background of the exhibits OR get one of the well informed and extremely helpful mediators to explain the details to you.<\/p>\n

I would say that SECRET is for a slightly older audience (maybe 16+), but there are plenty of things that younger children will get as well if you make the effort to explain it to them.<\/p>\n

From an airport-style security conveyor belt that records what you have in your pocket; via a Wifi traffic eavesdropping device (Transparency Grenade); a secret handshake training device; books full of stolen passwords (you might find yours!?); a Crypto Bar where you can download cryptographic software, a privacy wall that hides your identity to an installation with notepads where the lines are microprinted lists of Iraqi civilian victims of the Iraq war, you will find lots of interesting secrets.<\/p>\n

The Science Gallery has very visitor friendly opening hours of Tue-Fri 12:00-20:00 and Sat+Sun 12:00-18:00, so there are no excuses! ;-) Admission is free.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

The Dublin Festival of History 2015 takes place from 25 Sept until 11 October. A large number of talks will be in the Printworks building in the lower court yard of Dublin Castle (former Revenue Commissioner), some other events will be in Dublin’s Libraries, in City Hall, Mansion House and a few other venues.<\/p>\n

German Navy Ship in Dublin – Open Day?<\/h2>\n

The 90m long 1850 tonne German Navy Vessel “Ludwigshafen am Rhein” was meant to visit Dun Laoghaire this weekend (from 25-28 September), but diverted instead to Dublin.<\/p>\n

Originally it was also planned that there would be two Open Ship events on Saturday (13:00-17:00) and Sunday (14:00-16:00), but it is not clear if these two opportunities to visit the ship will still be there. But check it out, there is still a good chance.<\/p>\n

Admission is free.<\/p>\n

At the same time one of the most modern vessesls of the British Royal Navy is also in Dublin Port. The HMS Duncan will, however, not let you on board.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

The “Dublin Sketchers” is an informal group of (hobby) artists who go somewhere different in Dublin every Sunday (e.g. National Museum, Maritime Museum, Dublin Flea Market, Farmleigh, Botanic Gardens, Dublin Castle, Science Gallery, …), sketch for one to two hours and then meet up for coffee afterwards and discuss their sketches.<\/p>\n

Artist Aga Grandowicz is exhibiting her drawings “A Girl is a Girl”, which was inspired by the short film “Testimony” by Kamila Dydyna. The film addresses topics of domestic violence and alcoholism seen through the eyes of a child who\u2019s brought to a court in order to testify against her father. Aga’s drawings are in the style of a court room sketch.<\/p>\n

A Lunar Eclipse will happen on Sunday night and Astronomy Ireland are setting up the most powerful telescopes in Ireland, to show you the Moon in addition to lots of other night sky objects.<\/p>\n

The event will take place at 02:00 in the night from Sunday to Monday and everybody is invited to come to the Astronomy Ireland HQ no matter how the weather is. The hugely popular Oktoberfest in Dublin takes place from 17 Sept – 04 Oct again. It is a German Beer Festival with Erdinger Weissbr\u00e4u Beer (including alcohol-free wheat beer), lots of German Bavarian Food and authentic Bavarian music.<\/p>\n

Opening hours are Mon-Thurs 12:00-23:30, Fri+Sat: 12:00-00:30, Sun 12:00-22:30.<\/p>\n

The best place to experience the festival is in the Festival Tent on the platform in George’s Dock. But because the yearly festival is soo popular, there are at times long queues due to severe admission restrictions (quantity of people). Last year the queues already started at 17:30. Luckily around George’s Dock are more food and drink stalls so that you don’t HAVE to be in the Festival tent to enjoy the event.<\/p>\n

The hugely popular Oktoberfest in Dublin takes place from 17 Sept – 04 Oct again. It is a German Beer Festival with Erdinger Weissbr\u00e4u Beer (including alcohol-free wheat beer), lots of German Bavarian Food and authentic Bavarian music.<\/p>\n

Opening hours are Mon-Thurs 12:00-23:30, Fri+Sat: 12:00-00:30, Sun 12:00-22:30.<\/p>\n

The best place to experience the festival is in the Festival Tent on the platform in George’s Dock. But because the yearly festival is soo popular, there are at times long queues due to severe admission restrictions (quantity of people). Last year the queues already started at 17:30. Luckily around George’s Dock are more food and drink stalls so that you don’t HAVE to be in the Festival tent to enjoy the event.<\/p>\n

Admission is free, but after 22:00 an odd meal voucher system kicks in: You will have to buy a wristband for EUR 6 that gives you a EUR 5 food voucher (and 1 Euro goes to charity). Allegedly licensing rules force them to do that.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

The hugely popular Oktoberfest in Dublin takes place from 17 Sept – 04 Oct again. It is a German Beer Festival with Erdinger Weissbr\u00e4u Beer (including alcohol-free wheat beer), lots of German Bavarian Food and authentic Bavarian music.<\/p>\n

Opening hours are Mon-Thurs 12:00-23:30, Fri+Sat: 12:00-00:30, Sun 12:00-22:30.<\/p>\n

The best place to experience the festival is in the Festival Tent on the platform in George’s Dock. But because the yearly festival is soo popular, there are at times long queues due to severe admission restrictions (quantity of people). Last year the queues already started at 17:30. Luckily around George’s Dock are more food and drink stalls so that you don’t HAVE to be in the Festival tent to enjoy the event.<\/p>\n

Admission is free, but after 22:00 an odd meal voucher system kicks in: You will have to buy a wristband for EUR 6 that gives you a EUR 5 food voucher (and 1 Euro goes to charity). Allegedly licensing rules force them to do that.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

The hugely popular Oktoberfest in Dublin takes place from 17 Sept – 04 Oct again. It is a German Beer Festival with Erdinger Weissbr\u00e4u Beer (including alcohol-free wheat beer), lots of German Bavarian Food and authentic Bavarian music.<\/p>\n

Opening hours are Mon-Thurs 12:00-23:30, Fri+Sat: 12:00-00:30, Sun 12:00-22:30.<\/p>\n

The best place to experience the festival is in the Festival Tent on the platform in George’s Dock. But because the yearly festival is soo popular, there are at times long queues due to severe admission restrictions (quantity of people). Last year the queues already started at 17:30. Luckily around George’s Dock are more food and drink stalls so that you don’t HAVE to be in the Festival tent to enjoy the event.<\/p>\n

Admission is free, but after 22:00 an odd meal voucher system kicks in: You will have to buy a wristband for EUR 6 that gives you a EUR 5 food voucher (and 1 Euro goes to charity). Allegedly licensing rules force them to do that.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

The Volkswagen Scandal!
\n<\/strong><\/p>\n

What a shocking revelation! One of the most trusted car companies has systematically cheated for years. The software that delivers low emission results when a Diesel car is tested on a stationary test stand and then increases the emission output 20-30 (!!) times when the car is driven on the street is used in cars at least since 2009. The scandal emerged in the context of American cars due to the low emission limits in California, but why was the software used in other VW Diesel cars as well? Maybe because many countries – like Ireland – charge motor tax based on emissions? It could mean that all affected Diesel car owners will have to pay higher taxes from now on or even respectively. What a disaster!<\/p>\n

But there is another interesting aspect: If you follow Formula 1, you are probably surprised that year after year quite significant changes are made to the rules for engines and other parts of the car, but despite all that, the F1 teams still have quite similar performing cars when the new season starts. They are competing, are not discussing with each other what they will do in the next season and still the differences are small.<\/p>\n

Volkswagen indicated that they were not able to stay within the low emission rules in California and at the same time produce a car that is enjoyable to drive. Is VW just exceptionally bad or – with the Formula 1 example in mind – could it be that all other manufacturers of Diesel cars struggle in the same way with the emission limits? And taking that one step further, could it be that some or all other manufacturers used similar deception strategies to also have two different performance levels?<\/p>\n

Could it be that we are currently only looking at the tip of the iceberg and soon the scandal will extend to all car manufacturers in that Diesel class?<\/p>\n

And one other thing: If a company uses dishonesty, secrets and cheating tactics to achieve their goals in such a major way and were able to keep it under wraps for many years, can anybody really think that governments won’t do the same? So do we really know everything about what happened at – for example – 9\/11?<\/p>\n<\/div>\n
