This is the 425th week of publishing this monstrosity of a publication. ;-) Sometimes people tell me it is soooo long I can’t read the whole thing. YES, I know it is long, I write it! ;-) But I have some important news for you!<\/p>\n

If in the past you were trying to read the “Dublin Event Guide (for Free Events)”, I have a better suggestion for you: Like with a newspaper, you don’t read EVERY article, so I suggest you do the same with the Dublin Event Guide. Go to the day on which you have time (there are control buttons at the top). Then read the headlines only (and maybe the time, in case you have limited time available). If you find a headline that grabs your attention, read the rest. This approach takes much less time than trying to read the whole Dublin Event Guide from start to finish and you can use the time to go to events instead. ;-)<\/p>\n

I hope this helps and makes the Dublin Event Guide more usable for you!<\/p>\n

And here is my weekly appeal to you: These are two areas the Dublin Event Guide needs your continued help with: Your donations<\/a> help paying the bills for sending the Dublin Event Guide every week, so please help if you can. Just 1 Euro per month (12 Euro per year) would be great. Not very many subscribers are prepared to or able to help, so please don’t rely on others!<\/p>\n

And without you spreading the word we would have never reached 23,000 subscribers and 59,000 Facebook Likes. But it is just the start!! The goal is 50,000 subscribers and 100,000 Facebook Likes! Twisted Pepper closing!?<\/h2>\n

It started with a rumour (as it always does), but the strength and frequency of this rumour has increased and while there are no confirmations on website\/Facebook page or Twitter Page, it seems as if The Twisted Pepper in Middle Abbey Street is closing.<\/p>\n

It is a pity because another music venue will go with it. The Twisted Pepper didn’t have many free live-music events, but they nevertheless had very good other events.<\/p>\n

The rumour mill claims that the venue will be turned into a restaurant, but no confirmation for this is available (yet).<\/p>\n

It also not clear when the venue will close …or are the doors maybe already shut???<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n

Summer of Heritage – Dun Laoghaire-Rathdown<\/h2>\n

Dun Laoghaire-Rathdown is running their Summer of Heritage programme again and this year it will be from 29 June – 06 September.<\/p>\n

The programme is full of guided tours and other events and everything is free. 25 different venues\/locations take part and tours take place throughout the week (Not every day in evenry location, but if you are flexible, you will be able to find a tour somewhere from Monday-Sunday).<\/p>\n

Some of the locations are: Deansgrange Cemetery, Historic Milltown, Historic Blackrock, James Joyve Tower, Seapoint Martello Tower, Cabinteely House, The Metals, Historic Dun Laoghaire, Historic Dundrum, Foxrock Beckett Country Walk, Dublin Mountains Walk, Monkstown Castle and more.<\/p>\n

Manuals on how to be a good wife had been widely available in Ireland at the start of the twentieth century, but with the emergence of new technologies, the advice extended to newly married women and housewives began to change in the 1960s. The concept of being an \u2018ideal wife\u2019 became closely bound up with being a \u2018modern wife\u2019. This is best identified in the pages of women\u2019s magazines, which came to replace the traditional manual as a source for guidance. The message, driven by the advertisers, was clear: a \u2018good wife\u2019 was not just beautifully presented, but also used all the latest \u2018modern\u2019 devices. Her home – especially the kitchen – was an extension of her appearance and reputation.<\/p>\n

“Emotional States” is the theme this year and the carving started on 27 July. People ask usually how the sand withstands the rain and want to know if something is mixed in, but it is just normal sand with no added stuff. Once again it is a really interesting exhibition, that has some intriguing, fascinating and revealing exhibits. Be prepared to do a good bit of reading to understand the background of the exhibits OR get one of the well informed and extremely helpful mediators to explain the details to you.<\/p>\n

I would say that SECRET is for a slightly older audience (maybe 16+), but there are plenty of things that younger children will get as well if you make the effort to explain it to them.<\/p>\n

From an airport-style security conveyor belt that records what you have in your pocket; via a Wifi traffic eavesdropping device (Transparency Grenade); a secret handshake training device; books full of stolen passwords (you might find yours!?); a Crypto Bar where you can download cryptographic software, a privacy wall that hides your identity to an installation with notepads where the lines are microprinted lists of Iraqi civilian victims of the Iraq war, you will find lots of interesting secrets.<\/p>\n

Shakespeare in Iveagh Gardens is back!!<\/p>\n

The theatre production company Fortune’s Fool Productions under the leadership of the great Stephanie Courtney is coming back to Iveagh Gardens this year with eleven (!!) Open Air performances of “(Not a Traditional) Taming of the Shrew” by William Shakespeare.<\/p>\n

If you have been at their plays in previous years in Iveagh Gardens and Ranelagh Park, you know that they are high-class performances of popular Shakespeare plays that are provided completely free. All actors are super talented and passionate and the event is hugely popular every year. Let’s just hope for good weather!!<\/p>\n

The dates this year are 06-16 August with plays during the week (6, 7, 10, 11, 12, 13, 14 August) at 19:00 and at the weekend (8, 9, 15, 16 August) at 15:00.<\/p>\n

The Ironman 70.3 is coming to Dublin. It is a HALF Iron Man with the following distances 1.9km Swim, 90 km Bike, 20.1 km Run. The Swim will be in Dun Laoghaire, the cycle in Dublin and Kildare and the run will be in Phoenix Park.<\/p>\n

The swim starts at<\/p>\n

The sizeable amount of 2480 athletes will take part (I am thinking of the logisitical challenge to build a Transition area for nearly 2500 people.) and with the distances combined with the number of participants means that there will be EXTENSIVE road closures in Dublin which will seriously upset traffic.<\/p>\n

Dun Laoghaire to the East Link Bridge will be closed from 06:30-10:30, The whole City Centre around the Liffey will be closed from 07:00-10:45. ALL bridges across the Liffey are closed.
\nWest Dublin will be affected from 07:00-11:00 in some and until 14:30 in other areas. And large parts of Phoenix Park will be closed from 06:30-17:00. In addition there are road closures in Meath and Kildare. Details are here<\/a>.
\nWith so much impact on traffic in the Greater Dublin Area it really has to be asked if it makes sense to run an event like that in Dublin! Do the (potential) benefits for the Tourism Industry really balance out the upset it will cause to definitely 10s and possibly even 100s of thousands of people?<\/p>\n

It is meant to be a great event for Spectators too and the Spectator’s Guide suggests to keep that guide as a souvenir ;-) but will it really attract masses of interested people?<\/p>\n

The yearly Sand Scultpures exhibition will be in the Upper Courtyard of Dublin Castle again.<\/p>\n

“Emotional States” is the theme this year and the carving started on 27 July. The work is weather dependent and while the artists are working on it, you can watch them doing their thing (The artists are from Fleeting Sculpture<\/a> and often are happy to answer questions.) The exhibition will run until 25 August and admission is free.<\/p>\n

People ask usually how the sand withstands the rain and want to know if something is mixed in, but it is just normal sand with no added stuff. Once the carving is finished the “skin” will be sprayed with something to make it a little harder, but the holding together of the sculpture is purely down to the compacting of the sand.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

The current exhibition in the Science Gallery (08 Aug – 01 Nov) is called “SECRET – Nothing To See Here” and explores Privacy, Surveillance and Espionage.<\/p>\n

Once again it is a really interesting exhibition, that has some intriguing, fascinating and revealing exhibits. Be prepared to do a good bit of reading to understand the background of the exhibits OR get one of the well informed and extremely helpful mediators to explain the details to you.<\/p>\n

I would say that SECRET is for a slightly older audience (maybe 16+), but there are plenty of things that younger children will get as well if you make the effort to explain it to them.<\/p>\n

From an airport-style security conveyor belt that records what you have in your pocket; via a Wifi traffic eavesdropping device (Transparency Grenade); a secret handshake training device; books full of stolen passwords (you might find yours!?); a Crypto Bar where you can download cryptographic software, a privacy wall that hides your identity to an installation with notepads where the lines are microprinted lists of Iraqi civilian victims of the Iraq war, you will find lots of interesting secrets.<\/p>\n

The Science Gallery has very visitor friendly opening hours of Tue-Fri 12:00-20:00 and Sat+Sun 12:00-18:00, so there are no excuses! ;-) Admission is free.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

More Biodiversity Monitoring Talks will take place in August on four Sundays (09+16+23+30 August) and one Saturday (22 Aug) in the Arkle Room of Farmleigh House.<\/p>\n

This week’s talk is entitled: “Invasive species of Ireland and Farmleigh”<\/p>\n

As many species of pollinators (bees, wasps, etc) continue to decline around the world, the need to monitor them has increased. The pollinators now rely on us to provide them with a healthy habitat and in turn provide us with food and beauty. By learning a few simple steps to help provide a healthy environment, these species can then continue to provide us with useful functions such as pollination.<\/p>\n

The talks will cover various interesting aspects of Biodiversity Monitoring in Ireland including species identification, how to set up a monitoring transect & how to increase pollen and nectar sources in you garden.<\/p>\n

The event will start with a 25 minute Biodiversity presentation in the Arkle room followed by a 25 minute outdoor exploration to view some species on Farmleigh grounds. (Weather Permitting).<\/p>\n

The theatre production company Fortune’s Fool Productions under the leadership of the great Stephanie Courtney is coming back to Iveagh Gardens this year with eleven (!!) Open Air performances of “(Not a Traditional) Taming of the Shrew” by William Shakespeare.<\/p>\n

If you have been at their plays in previous years in Iveagh Gardens and Ranelagh Park, you know that they are high-class performances of popular Shakespeare plays that are provided completely free. All actors are super talented and passionate and the event is hugely popular every year. Let’s just hope for good weather!!<\/p>\n

The dates this year are 06-16 August with plays during the week (6, 7, 10, 11, 12, 13, 14 August) at 19:00 and at the weekend (8, 9, 15, 16 August) at 15:00.<\/p>\n

The theatre production company Fortune’s Fool Productions under the leadership of the great Stephanie Courtney is coming back to Iveagh Gardens this year with eleven (!!) Open Air performances of “(Not a Traditional) Taming of the Shrew” by William Shakespeare.<\/p>\n

If you have been at their plays in previous years in Iveagh Gardens and Ranelagh Park, you know that they are high-class performances of popular Shakespeare plays that are provided completely free. All actors are super talented and passionate and the event is hugely popular every year. Let’s just hope for good weather!!<\/p>\n

The dates this year are 06-16 August with plays during the week (6, 7, 10, 11, 12, 13, 14 August) at 19:00 and at the weekend (8, 9, 15, 16 August) at 15:00.<\/p>\n

Shakespeare in Iveagh Gardens is back!!<\/p>\n

The theatre production company Fortune’s Fool Productions under the leadership of the great Stephanie Courtney is coming back to Iveagh Gardens this year with eleven (!!) Open Air performances of “(Not a Traditional) Taming of the Shrew” by William Shakespeare.<\/p>\n

If you have been at their plays in previous years in Iveagh Gardens and Ranelagh Park, you know that they are high-class performances of popular Shakespeare plays that are provided completely free. All actors are super talented and passionate and the event is hugely popular every year. Let’s just hope for good weather!!<\/p>\n

The dates this year are 06-16 August with plays during the week (6, 7, 10, 11, 12, 13, 14 August) at 19:00 and at the weekend (8, 9, 15, 16 August) at 15:00.<\/p>\n

The yearly Sand Scultpures exhibition will be in the Upper Courtyard of Dublin Castle again.<\/p>\n

“Emotional States” is the theme this year and the carving started on 27 July. The work is weather dependent and while the artists are working on it, you can watch them doing their thing (The artists are from Fleeting Sculpture<\/a> and often are happy to answer questions.) The exhibition will run until 25 August and admission is free.<\/p>\n

People ask usually how the sand withstands the rain and want to know if something is mixed in, but it is just normal sand with no added stuff. Once the carving is finished the “skin” will be sprayed with something to make it a little harder, but the holding together of the sculpture is purely down to the compacting of the sand.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

The theatre production company Fortune’s Fool Productions under the leadership of the great Stephanie Courtney is coming back to Iveagh Gardens this year with eleven (!!) Open Air performances of “(Not a Traditional) Taming of the Shrew” by William Shakespeare.<\/p>\n

If you have been at their plays in previous years in Iveagh Gardens and Ranelagh Park, you know that they are high-class performances of popular Shakespeare plays that are provided completely free. The yearly Sand Scultpures exhibition will be in the Upper Courtyard of Dublin Castle again.<\/p>\n

“Emotional States” is the theme this year and the carving started on 27 July. The work is weather dependent and while the artists are working on it, you can watch them doing their thing (The artists are from Fleeting Sculpture<\/a> and often are happy to answer questions.) The exhibition will run until 25 August and admission is free.<\/p>\n

People ask usually how the sand withstands the rain and want to know if something is mixed in, but it is just normal sand with no added stuff. Once the carving is finished the “skin” will be sprayed with something to make it a little harder, but the holding together of the sculpture is purely down to the compacting of the sand.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

Shakespeare in Iveagh Gardens is back!!<\/p>\n

The theatre production company Fortune’s Fool Productions under the leadership of the great Stephanie Courtney is coming back to Iveagh Gardens this year with eleven (!!) Open Air performances of “(Not a Traditional) Taming of the Shrew” by William Shakespeare.<\/p>\n

If you have been at their plays in previous years in Iveagh Gardens and Ranelagh Park, you know that they are high-class performances of popular Shakespeare plays that are provided completely free. All actors are super talented and passionate and the event is hugely popular every year. Let’s just hope for good weather!!<\/p>\n

The dates this year are 06-16 August with plays during the week (6, 7, 10, 11, 12, 13, 14 August) at 19:00 and at the weekend (8, 9, 15, 16 August) at 15:00.<\/p>\n

If you are not very familiar with Shakespeare plays, you might want to read some information about the play here<\/a>, so that you can follow it easier. But keep in mind that the play has “(Not the Traditional)” in the title, so expect some interesting modernisations.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

Dublin Mountains Partnership – Guided Walks<\/h2>\n

Every month the Dublin Mountain Partnership runs free guided walks in the Dublin Mountains on some Saturdays or Sundays during the month. Suing a satirical magazine? Is that the last resort?

You probably have heard of Waterford Whispers News<\/a>, an Irish satirical news magazine that came to immense popularity because the guys who write it are really really good. It is satire at its finest with the finger on the pulse of what is current and interesting in Ireland and abroad.<\/p>\n

With the brief of staying current and not sparing anything that CAN be turned into satire, businessman Denis O’Brien is a regular target of the WWN satire.<\/p>\n

In a recent article entitled “Denis O\u2019Brien receives 20 year jail sentence for mobile phone license bribe in a parallel universe” they wrote that in a parallel and non-existing universe Denis O’Brien was found guilty to have given two bribes to Michael Lowry. Everybody knows that he has not been found guilty and that he is not in prison and EVERYBODY also knows that Waterford Whispers News is a SATIRE magazine.<\/p>\n

O’Brien, however, didn’t see the funny side of this and was VERY offended. He sent his lawyers to threaten WWN and they had no other choice than to remove the article.<\/p>\n

The letter from the solicitors (Meagher Solicitors) made it online and is an interesting read. Find it here<\/a>. Also spend some time to read the content and look at the number of Shares.<\/p>\n

O’Brien’s tetchiness is not making him any friends and you could wonder what is more damaging to the reputation of a person: A satire article that everyone know is untrue and after a few giggles forgets quickly OR running rampant, threatening and\/or suing like a mad man? Odd!!<\/p>\n
