I love bank holidays and I bet you do to! An additional weekend day is nothing to complain about. But I have to admit that I am shocked and slightly disturbed about the fact that it is already August. It’s not just that the year is racing by, it is even worse: It is a kind of a sneaking by in hyperspeed, because I can’t even keep track of it. There I was looking forward to the summer and then summer never happened. :-O<\/p>\n

Luckily we got a chance to enjoy a few festivals and we are not at the end yet. This week the Dame District is inviting to the Rock-n-Roll Festival, while elsewhere there is also lots happening at non-free festivals.<\/p>\n

By the way, did you know that I regularly mention some of the headline non-free events as well? They are mentioned in the Upcoming Events section!<\/p>\n

And here is my weekly appeal to you: These are two areas the Dublin Event Guide needs your continued help with: Your donations<\/a> help paying the bills for sending the Dublin Event Guide every week, so please help if you can. Just 1 Euro per month (12 Euro per year) would be great. Not very many subscribers are prepared to or able to help, so please don’t rely on others!<\/p>\n

If you are reading the Dublin Event Guide (for Free Events) for a while, you hopefully know that there is also a Facebook presence for the Dublin Event Guide and nearly 60,000 people have joined our Facebook community. Every day a brief event reminder is posted on that page, mostly before 07:30 in the morning and lots of people use them to plan their day.<\/p>\n

The problem was, however, that Facebook decided if you should see it and because of that many many people that wanted to see the Dublin Event Guide updates were not shown by Facebook anymore.<\/p>\n

Facebook has now made BIG changes and for the first time YOU are in charge of what you want to see. If you want to make sure that you see the daily event reminders from the Dubln Event Guide do the following:<\/p>\n

1) From your Desktop: Go to http:\/\/www.facebook.com\/DublinEventGuide<\/a> and lock for the LIKED button in the banner at the top of the page. Click on this LIKED button and you should see a menu that contains the option “SEE FIRST”. Tick it and all is good! ;-) You can change it any time again, so there is no risk.<\/p>\n

Do you remember the massive changes that Dublin City is considering for the City Centre? It will COMPLETELY change the City Centre if it will go ahead. If you have an opinion about it, no matter if you are in favour, partially in favour of against, you have to make your opinion heard NOW. Summer of Heritage – Dun Laoghaire-Rathdown<\/h2>\n

Dun Laoghaire-Rathdown is running their Summer of Heritage programme again and this year it will be from 29 June – 06 September.<\/p>\n

The programme is full of guided tours and other events and everything is free. 25 different venues\/locations take part and tours take place throughout the week (Not every day in evenry location, but if you are flexible, you will be able to find a tour somewhere from Monday-Sunday).<\/p>\n

Some of the locations are: Deansgrange Cemetery, Historic Milltown, Historic Blackrock, James Joyve Tower, Seapoint Martello Tower, Cabinteely House, The Metals, Historic Dun Laoghaire, Historic Dundrum, Foxrock Beckett Country Walk, Dublin Mountains Walk, Monkstown Castle and more.<\/p>\n

But Plutonium, one of the nuclear waste products has a half-life of 24,000 years and maybe we can assume that it is gone after 10 half-times, which is 240,000 years!!<\/p>\n

Now compare the wall paintings we find in caves or hieroglyphics with our ways of express information today. How can we ensure that even in 240,000 years the people living then will understand our warning signs and continue to protect and look after these nuclear burial grounds?<\/p>\n

“Riddle of the Burial Ground” attempts to imagine a time in which language, signs and forms will be beyond our current comprehension and the 16 artists involved in this exhibition expressed this through sculpture, film, photography, documentary, fiction, science-fiction, history, landscapes and imagined futures.<\/p>\n

Modern Wife, Modern Life is an exhibition exploring the \u2018ideal wife\u2019 turned \u2018modern wife\u2019 in 1960s Ireland as seen through the pages of women\u2019s magazines.<\/p>\n

Manuals on how to be a good wife had been widely available in Ireland at the start of the twentieth century, but with the emergence of new technologies, the advice extended to newly married women and housewives began to change in the 1960s. The concept of being an \u2018ideal wife\u2019 became closely bound up with being a \u2018modern wife\u2019. This is best identified in the pages of women\u2019s magazines, which came to replace the traditional manual as a source for guidance. The message, driven by the advertisers, was clear: a \u2018good wife\u2019 was not just beautifully presented, but also used all the latest \u2018modern\u2019 devices. Her home – especially the kitchen – was an extension of her appearance and reputation.<\/p>\n

The funeral of O\u2019Donovan Rossa and P\u00e1draig Pearse\u2019s graveside oration was an important event in the lead up to the 1916 Rising.<\/p>\n

A state commemoration of Jeremiah O\u2019Donovan Rossa’s funeral will therefore take place on Saturday in the presence of President Michael D. Higgins, Taoiseach Enda Kenny and Minister for Arts, Heritage and the Gaeltacht Heather Humphreys.<\/p>\n

1500 tickets to this event were distributed through the Glasnevin Cemetery website for access to areas adjacent to the Church and O\u2019Connell Tower in the Cemetery and you must have a valid ticket to access this area.<\/p>\n

A non ticketed public viewing area, with space for up to 5,000 people will be available outside the Cemetery. This viewing area will be fitted with large screens televising the event. No tickets are required there.<\/p>\n

Please note: Parking in the area will be severely limited and road closures will be in place, so you should walk or come by public transport.<\/p>\n

The event is the first of the State ceremonial events of the Ireland 2016 Centenary Programme. It will follow the proceedings of the original funeral of O\u2019Donovan Rossa and will culminate with a wreath laying ceremony, the firing of a volley of shots, the raising of the National Flag and the National Anthem.<\/p>\n

The details about this event are extremely hard to come by as if the state doesn’t want you to know. The start time was no where to be found despite researching at least 20 relevant websites, but in the end the “Dublin Event Guide (for Free Events)” was able to get the information for you. ;-) However, there is still confusion: Glasnevin Cemetery says that the event starts at 10:00, the AA says it starts at 10:30 and the President’s office claims it starts at 11:00. I would think that the event actually starts at 11:00, but people are expected from 10:00\/10:30, but that is just my guess.<\/p>\n

It seems as if this state commemoration and the funeral re-enactment (including procession with hearse and marching bands from Dublin City Hall to Glasnevin Cemetery) are organised completely separately.<\/p>\n

The yearly Sand Scultpures exhibition will be in the Upper Courtyard of Dublin Castle again.<\/p>\n

“Emotional States” is the theme this year and the carving started on 27 July. The work is weather dependent and while the artists are working on it, you can watch them doing their thing (The artists are from Fleeting Sculpture<\/a> and often are happy to answer questions.) The exhibition will run until 25 August and admission is free.<\/p>\n

People ask usually how the sand withstands the rain and want to know if something is mixed in, but it is just normal sand with no added stuff. Once the carving is finished the “skin” will be sprayed with something to make it a little harder, but the holding together of the sculpture is purely down to the compacting of the sand.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

Jeremiah O’Donovan Rossa was a prominent member of the Irish Republican Brotherhood and a Fenian leader. He was born on 10 September 1831 in Co. Cork and he died on 29 June 1915 in New York where he lived since 1870 with no right to return to Ireland.<\/p>\n

After his death his body was returned to Ireland to be buried on Glasnevin cemetery and the funeral took place on 01 August 2015. The graveside oration given by P\u00e1draig Pearse, is one of the most famous speeches of the Irish independence movement.<\/p>\n

O’Donovan Rossa is seen as one of the forefathers of the Easter Rising of 1916 and the re-enactment of his funeral on its 100th anniversary on Saturday is the first event of the 2016 commemorations of the Easter Rising.<\/p>\n

The coffin will be “lying in state” from 12:00 in City Hall. Then at 13:00 the funeral procession assemble at 13:00 on Barnardos Square and at 13:30, the coffin will be brought to the Horse Drawn Hearse from the Rotunda in City Hall. The Cortege departs at 14:00 with a Guard of honour and a number of marching bands.
\nThe route will be Dame St, Westmoreland St, O\u2019Connell St. (at 14:20), Parnell St, Parnell Sq, Mountjoy St, Berkley Road, Cabra Road, Finglas Road and at 15:00 it will arrive at Glasnevin Cemetery.<\/p>\n

This event is seemingly organised by Sinn Fein and it appears as if it is not connected in any way to the State Event at Glasnevin Cemetery that is also taking place on the same day.<\/p>\n

Atmosphere is Dun Laoghaire’s new festival for Balloons, Kites & Flight and it will be on Newtownsmith Green along the sea front between the East Pier in Dun Laoghaire and the 40 Foot in Sandycove.<\/p>\n

Newtownsmith will be transformed with sculptures and displays made of latex balloons and kite enthusiasts showing off their latest creations and stunt skills. There will be balloon modelling and kite making workshops.<\/p>\n

Professional balloon modellers will show their skills by creating models of Movie Characters, Animals, Cartoon Characters and lots more. Each balloon artist will give a workshop on how to create a particular character at intervals throughout the day and then you can try their skills at balloon modelling in special make and do areas.<\/p>\n

Master kite flyers will demonstrate their skills and creations and will give workshops on kite aerodynamics, design and skills followed by the opportunity for you to build your own kite.<\/p>\n

A falconry display will also be there.<\/p>\n

The yearly Sand Scultpures exhibition will be in the Upper Courtyard of Dublin Castle again.<\/p>\n

“Emotional States” is the theme this year and the carving started on 27 July. The work is weather dependent and while the artists are working on it, you can watch them doing their thing (The artists are from Fleeting Sculpture<\/a> and often are happy to answer questions.) The exhibition will run until 25 August and admission is free.<\/p>\n

People ask usually how the sand withstands the rain and want to know if something is mixed in, but it is just normal sand with no added stuff. Once the carving is finished the “skin” will be sprayed with something to make it a little harder, but the holding together of the sculpture is purely down to the compacting of the sand.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

The yearly Sand Scultpures exhibition will be in the Upper Courtyard of Dublin Castle again.<\/p>\n

“Emotional States” is the theme this year and the carving started on 27 July. The work is weather dependent and while the artists are working on it, you can watch them doing their thing (The artists are from Fleeting Sculpture<\/a> and often are happy to answer questions.) The exhibition will run until 25 August and admission is free.<\/p>\n

People ask usually how the sand withstands the rain and want to know if something is mixed in, but it is just normal sand with no added stuff. First Wednesday – Free Entrance to OPW Sites<\/h2>\n

Entry charges at nearly all OPW sites are waived once a month. The Office of Public Works (OPW) wants to encourage people to visit the historic sites that it manages and has therfore started this initiative in 2011.<\/p>\n

Most OPW owned sites can already be visited for free, but the sites that normally charge a fee will be free every first Wednesday as well. In the (extended) Greater Dublin Area this means you can visit the following sites for free:

The yearly Sand Scultpures exhibition will be in the Upper Courtyard of Dublin Castle again.<\/p>\n

“Emotional States” is the theme this year and the carving started on 27 July. The work is weather dependent and while the artists are working on it, you can watch them doing their thing (The artists are from Fleeting Sculpture<\/a> and often are happy to answer questions.) The exhibition will run until 25 August and admission is free.<\/p>\n

People ask usually how the sand withstands the rain and want to know if something is mixed in, but it is just normal sand with no added stuff. Once the carving is finished the “skin” will be sprayed with something to make it a little harder, but the holding together of the sculpture is purely down to the compacting of the sand.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

The yearly Sand Scultpures exhibition will be in the Upper Courtyard of Dublin Castle again.<\/p>\n

“Emotional States” is the theme this year and the carving started on 27 July. The work is weather dependent and while the artists are working on it, you can watch them doing their thing (The artists are from Fleeting Sculpture<\/a> and often are happy to answer questions.) The exhibition will run until 25 August and admission is free.<\/p>\n

People ask usually how the sand withstands the rain and want to know if something is mixed in, but it is just normal sand with no added stuff. Once the carving is finished the “skin” will be sprayed with something to make it a little harder, but the holding together of the sculpture is purely down to the compacting of the sand.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

The theatre production company Fortune’s Fool Productions under the leadership of the great Stephanie Courtney is coming back to Iveagh Gardens this year with eleven (!!) Open Air performances of “(Not a Traditional) Taming of the Shrew” by William Shakespeare.<\/p>\n

If you have been at their plays in previous years in Iveagh Gardens and Ranelagh Park, you know that they are high-class performances of popular Shakespeare plays that are provided completely free. The yearly Sand Scultpures exhibition will be in the Upper Courtyard of Dublin Castle again.<\/p>\n

“Emotional States” is the theme this year and the carving started on 27 July. The work is weather dependent and while the artists are working on it, you can watch them doing their thing (The artists are from Fleeting Sculpture<\/a> and often are happy to answer questions.) The exhibition will run until 25 August and admission is free.<\/p>\n

People ask usually how the sand withstands the rain and want to know if something is mixed in, but it is just normal sand with no added stuff. Once the carving is finished the “skin” will be sprayed with something to make it a little harder, but the holding together of the sculpture is purely down to the compacting of the sand.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

Bicycle On the sport fines coming into effect<\/strong><\/p>\n

On 01 August the new penalties for misbehaviours by cyclists came into effect and a garda can give you an on the sport fine if you ignore a red light etc. There are seven spelled out offences, but don’t be fooled, this is not the full story! Read more below!<\/p>\n

First of all let me remind you that the penalty is EUR 40. The Fixed Charge Penalty Notice will be sent to the address you gave the gardai. However, if he has reason to suspect that the address you gave is not correct, he can seize your bicycle immediately. If you decide not to pay and the whole matter goes to court, it could increase the cost to EUR 2000, but there COULD also be a chance to get off, depending on the case.<\/p>\n

Helmets and High-viz vests are NOT compulsory, despite a misleading recent Garda poster that could have interpreted to mean that you could be charged if you don’t wear a helmet.<\/p>\n

And what were these 7 offences again? Here they are:<\/p>\n

1. Cyclist driving a pedal cycle without reasonable consideration.
\n2. No front lamp or rear lamp lit during lighting-up hours on a pedal cycle.
\n3. Cyclist proceeding into a pedestrianised street or area.
\n4 . Cyclist proceeding past traffic lights when the red lamp is illuminated.
\n5. Cyclist proceeding past cycle traffic lights when red lamp is lit.
\n6. Cyclist failing to stop for a School Warden sign.
\n7. Cyclist proceeding beyond a stop line, barrier or half barrier at a railway level crossing, swing bridge or lifting bridge, when the red lamps are flashing.<\/p>\n

It is unclear why these 7 were chosen. Driving the wrong way into a one-way street is not on the list. Cycling on a footpath is not either, but cycling into an pedestrianised area is on it!? Seems odd.<\/p>\n

But the oddest thing of all is the first one on the list above! The “without reasonable consideration” is a catch all rule and instead of having clear rules you now depend on the interpretation of reasonable consideration by a garda again. Does this make sense? I don’t think so! Laws should be clear and precise and should spell out what you are allowed to do and what now. They should not and NEVER require interpretation by a garda on the street!<\/p>\n
