This weekend the Festival of Curiosity with lots of “sub-events” is taking place, have a good look through the Dublin Event Guide to find them all.<\/p>\n

If there is only ONE event you can go to then consider the Treasure Hunt on Sunday. I like Treasure Hunts because they get you out to explore aspects of Dublin that you otherwise wouldn’t see and they usually don’t take too long (in this case 1.5 hours) if you don’t have that much time. Sure they are for kids, but, hey, we are all kids, just some of us are big ones. So get in touch with your inner-kid and enjoy the treasure hunt….or whatever else you will do.<\/p>\n

Thanks a lot to the people that helped with a donation last week. The EUR 190 that are needed per month nearly came together. With a bit of luck (and your goodwill) there are some more donations this week and then the Dublin Event Guide is secured again for a month, :-) Thanks!<\/p>\n

And here is my weekly appeal to you: These are two areas the Dublin Event Guide needs your continued help with: Your donations<\/a> help paying the bills for sending the Dublin Event Guide every week, so please help if you can. Just 1 Euro per month (12 Euro per year) would be great. Not very many subscribers are prepared to or able to help, so please don’t rely on others!<\/p>\n

And without you spreading the word we would have never reached 23,000 subscribers and 59,000 Facebook Likes. But it is just the start!! The goal is 50,000 subscribers and 100,000 Facebook Likes! Mothercare and Best Menswear in examinership<\/h2>\n

It would be great to have only good news in this section, but sometimes the not so good news also have to get mentioned to ensure that you don’t lose out. During the week it was announced that both Mothercare<\/a> and Best Mens Wear<\/a> were put in Examinership.<\/p>\n

Examinership is usually not the end, instead a company got into trouble and the examiner has decided that there is a good chance that the company can get fixed or sold. And after a period of “healing” and renegotiation of debts and rents, many companies can leave examinership again and continue. But nothing is guaranteed and therefore you need to consider this development especially if you have a gift voucher for either of the shops or if you have to bring back something or have any type of running “dispute” over a product you bought.<\/p>\n

Currently both shops are open and are fully operational, but in some circumstances this can change during or after the examinership. So don’t wait!<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n

STOP the Spars, Centra, Londis & Starbucks in the City Centre!<\/h2>\n
\n

Do we not have enough Spars, Centras, Londis and Starbucks in the City Centre? Do we really need one of each at every street corner?<\/p>\n

There was this lovely bookshop “Books Upstairs” at 36 College Green (just 2 up from the new-ish Abercrombie&Fitch shop). Luckily it didn’t have to close down, but instead moved to new premises in 17 D’Olier Street (opposite Doyle’s Pub), but guess what goes in their old premises on College Green? …another flippin Spar! Such a pity!<\/p>\n

There is a red banner outside on the railings at the moment promising that an “exciting” Spar shop will open soon. I don’t know if you get excited about groceries, but I don’t.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n

Dublin City Summer Arts Programme for children<\/h2>\n

The Dublin City Council Arts Office and The Dublin City Libraries have put together a Summer Arts Programme for children. The Children’s Art in Libraries (CAL) Programmes are all free and take place in July and August. The full brochure can be downloaded here<\/a>.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n

Summer of Heritage – Dun Laoghaire-Rathdown<\/h2>\n

Dun Laoghaire-Rathdown is running their Summer of Heritage programme again and this year it will be from 29 June – 06 September.<\/p>\n

The programme is full of guided tours and other events and everything is free. 25 different venues\/locations take part and tours take place throughout the week (Not every day in evenry location, but if you are flexible, you will be able to find a tour somewhere from Monday-Sunday).<\/p>\n

Some of the locations are: Deansgrange Cemetery, Historic Milltown, Historic Blackrock, James Joyve Tower, Seapoint Martello Tower, Cabinteely House, The Metals, Historic Dun Laoghaire, Historic Dundrum, Foxrock Beckett Country Walk, Dublin Mountains Walk, Monkstown Castle and more.<\/p>\n

Nuclear burial grounds (salt mines and other underground spaces that contain nuclear waste) are marked with signs today to warn about the dangers coming from them. But Plutonium, one of the nuclear waste products has a half-life of 24,000 years and maybe we can assume that it is gone after 10 half-times, which is 240,000 years!!<\/p>\n

Now compare the wall paintings we find in caves or hieroglyphics with our ways of express information today. How can we ensure that even in 240,000 years the people living then will understand our warning signs and continue to protect and look after these nuclear burial grounds?<\/p>\n

“Riddle of the Burial Ground” attempts to imagine a time in which language, signs and forms will be beyond our current comprehension and the 16 artists involved in this exhibition expressed this through sculpture, film, photography, documentary, fiction, science-fiction, history, landscapes and imagined futures.<\/p>\n

Modern Wife, Modern Life is an exhibition exploring the \u2018ideal wife\u2019 turned \u2018modern wife\u2019 in 1960s Ireland as seen through the pages of women\u2019s magazines.<\/p>\n

Manuals on how to be a good wife had been widely available in Ireland at the start of the twentieth century, but with the emergence of new technologies, the advice extended to newly married women and housewives began to change in the 1960s. The concept of being an \u2018ideal wife\u2019 became closely bound up with being a \u2018modern wife\u2019. This is best identified in the pages of women\u2019s magazines, which came to replace the traditional manual as a source for guidance. The message, driven by the advertisers, was clear: a \u2018good wife\u2019 was not just beautifully presented, but also used all the latest \u2018modern\u2019 devices. Her home – especially the kitchen – was an extension of her appearance and reputation.<\/p>\n

The Festival of Curiosity is a brilliant Science & Art Festival in Dublin and I hope you saw it in the Upcoming Events section for the last two weeks, because the event is very very popular and the many (but not enough) free tickets for some of the events go like hot cakes.<\/p>\n

If you got your tickets in time, all is good, but if you didn’t, then the news is unfortunately not good: All free tickets are gone! There are still tickets for a few non-free events available and there are also some drop-in activities where you don’t need tickets.<\/p>\n

Military Guard CeremonyThe National Monument<\/p>\n

A Ceremonial Military Guard will parade at the site of the “National Memorial to Members of the Defence Forces who died in the Service of the State”, at Merrion Square during July and August. Ceremonies will take place at the pyramid at Merrion Square opposite the back entrance to the Dail, every Saturday from 18 July to 22 August 2015.<\/p>\n

Units from different sections of the Defence Forces (Army, Air Corps and Naval Service) will participate in this Military Guard Ceremony to remember their comrades. More Biodiversity Monitoring Talks will take place in July on four Sundays (05+12+19+26 July) in the Arkle Room of Farmleigh House.<\/p>\n

This week’s talk is entitled: “Polinators of Ireland and Farmleigh”<\/p>\n

As many species of pollinators (bees, wasps, etc) continue to decline around the world, the need to monitor them has increased. The pollinators now rely on us to provide them with a healthy habitat and in turn provide us with food and beauty. By learning a few simple steps to help provide a healthy environment, these species can then continue to provide us with useful functions such as pollination.<\/p>\n

The talks will cover various interesting aspects of Biodiversity Monitoring in Ireland including species identification, how to set up a monitoring transect & how to increase pollen and nectar sources in you garden.<\/p>\n

The event will start with a 25 minute Biodiversity presentation in the Arkle room followed by a 25 minute outdoor exploration to view some species on Farmleigh grounds. (Weather Permitting).<\/p>\n

Dublin Mountains Partnership – Guided Walks<\/h2>\n

Every month the Dublin Mountain Partnership runs free guided walks in the Dublin Mountains on some Saturdays or Sundays during the month. Safefood – We will scare you sooner or later!<\/strong><\/p>\n

Tiny Ireland has two organisations that look after food safety. One is doing a good job, all considered, and the other one is trying to scare the bejaysus out of you if you let them. Unfortunately, though, the superfluous organisation is an All-Ireland organisation and therefore more or less untouchable.<\/p>\n

The two players in this field are in one corner, the Food Safety Authority of Ireland, who inspect restaurants for food safety breaches and can close them down. They advise us on Food Safety and seem to do a good and balanced job. And the other corner there is Safefood, who love sensationalism, constantly try to scare you about bacteria and germs. You probably remember the TV ads. They tell you to boil dishclothes every two days and live in constant fear and panic of food poisoning.<\/p>\n

Well, the newest campaign<\/a> with which Safefood want to scare you is Folic Acid! It is not that the food supplement is bad for you, no, this time they are telling you that you should take it every day as long as you are female and are seksually (wrong spelling to avoid the wrath from spam checkers!) active. Why should you take it EVERY day? Because you COULD get pregnant, no matter what type of protection you might use and\/or what your intentions are regarding becoming pregnant. You might have been seksually active for 10 years and still not been pregnant once in that time, but according to Safefood it could have happened ANY time. I hope you see the MASSIVE risk that would have totally justified taking Folic acid for the last 3650 days!<\/p>\n

Well in this case, I’d say you should take Blood Thinners (Heparin\/Warfarin etc) on a daily basis because you COULD get a stroke ANY day and you also should take antibiotics every day because you COULD get an infection in the next 10 minutes. And while you are at it, better add some Prozac as well, because you could start suffering from depression tomorrow.<\/p>\n

Safefood is just odd!<\/p>\n
