After a great City Spectacular last weekend, we have another super-busy weekend ahead of us with lots of big events in Raheny, Bray, Swords, Finglas, Meeting House Square, the Liberties, Blackrock. All free!<\/p>\n

Hopefully you will get a chance to get out and enjoy some of these all-ages events. Looking at my event list for the year, this could be the busiest weekend of the year!<\/p>\n

The year is racing away from us and we are well in the second half of July already, which means that next weekend we are just 5 months away from Christmas! Wow, that is unreal! :-O<\/p>\n

Every week I remind you to spread the word about the Dublin Event Guide (for Free Events) and I also ask you to consider donating some money to keep the Dublin Event Guide on the road. Last week the donation side wasn’t successful and nobody donated, which means that we are still EUR 100 away from the monthly requirement of EUR 190 to pay for hosting, domain names and for the sending of the Dublin Event Guide every week. I hate begging, but if you can, please help with a donation<\/a>. EUR 12 would be great (that’s just EUR 1 per month), but more or less than that is also helpful. Every cent counts! Thanks!!<\/p>\n

This is my normal weekly appeal and I will just repeat it once again: These are two areas the Dublin Event Guide needs your continued help with: Your donations<\/a> help paying the bills for sending the Dublin Event Guide every week, so please help if you can. Just 1 Euro per month (12 Euro per year) would be great. Not very many subscribers are prepared to or able to help, so please don’t rely on others!<\/p>\n

And without you spreading the word we would have never reached 23,000 subscribers and 59,000 Facebook Likes. But it is just the start!! The goal is 50,000 subscribers and 100,000 Facebook Likes! Big goals, I know, but I believe we can achieve it! Imagine if everyone just got ONE additional person to subscribe to the Dublin Event Guide (for Free Events). Summer of Heritage – Dun Laoghaire-Rathdown<\/h2>\n

Dun Laoghaire-Rathdown is running their Summer of Heritage programme again and this year it will be from 29 June – 06 September.<\/p>\n

The programme is full of guided tours and other events and everything is free. 25 different venues\/locations take part and tours take place throughout the week (Not every day in evenry location, but if you are flexible, you will be able to find a tour somewhere from Monday-Sunday).<\/p>\n

Some of the locations are: Deansgrange Cemetery, Historic Milltown, Historic Blackrock, James Joyve Tower, Seapoint Martello Tower, Cabinteely House, The Metals, Historic Dun Laoghaire, Historic Dundrum, Foxrock Beckett Country Walk, Dublin Mountains Walk, Monkstown Castle and more.<\/p>\n

Nuclear burial grounds (salt mines and other underground spaces that contain nuclear waste) are marked with signs today to warn about the dangers coming from them. But Plutonium, one of the nuclear waste products has a half-life of 24,000 years and maybe we can assume that it is gone after 10 half-times, which is 240,000 years!!<\/p>\n

Now compare the wall paintings we find in caves or hieroglyphics with our ways of express information today. How can we ensure that even in 240,000 years the people living then will understand our warning signs and continue to protect and look after these nuclear burial grounds?<\/p>\n

“Riddle of the Burial Ground” attempts to imagine a time in which language, signs and forms will be beyond our current comprehension and the 16 artists involved in this exhibition expressed this through sculpture, film, photography, documentary, fiction, science-fiction, history, landscapes and imagined futures.<\/p>\n

Modern Wife, Modern Life is an exhibition exploring the \u2018ideal wife\u2019 turned \u2018modern wife\u2019 in 1960s Ireland as seen through the pages of women\u2019s magazines.<\/p>\n

Manuals on how to be a good wife had been widely available in Ireland at the start of the twentieth century, but with the emergence of new technologies, the advice extended to newly married women and housewives began to change in the 1960s. The concept of being an \u2018ideal wife\u2019 became closely bound up with being a \u2018modern wife\u2019. This is best identified in the pages of women\u2019s magazines, which came to replace the traditional manual as a source for guidance. The message, driven by the advertisers, was clear: a \u2018good wife\u2019 was not just beautifully presented, but also used all the latest \u2018modern\u2019 devices. Her home – especially the kitchen – was an extension of her appearance and reputation.<\/p>\n

The Great Dublin Swim (or Grand Dublin Swim) will happen on Saturday. From 12:00-16:00 every hour waves of swimmers will swim the distances of 750m or 1500m with wetsuit and non-wetsuit options.<\/p>\n

Over 500 swimmers are expected and for the people supporting the swimmers, there will be street performers, teddy bear picnic and face painting.<\/p>\n

The Science Gallery exhibition “HOME\\SICK – Post-Domestic Bliss” looks at the Home and asks what “Home” really is and also how it could be improved. The word means something different to everyone, but how will the future of technology and design, communities, families, resources, and nations change the nature of what we define as ‘home’?<\/p>\n

HOME\\SICK is the summer exhibition of the Science Gallery, which usually is the exhibition that is the most accessible and understandable for all ages and that goal was achieved again. It is not the Science Gallery’s best exhibition, but it is still definitely worth a visit.<\/p>\n

A Ceremonial Military Guard will parade at the site of the “National Memorial to Members of the Defence Forces who died in the Service of the State”, at Merrion Square during July and August. Ceremonies will take place at the pyramid at Merrion Square opposite the back entrance to the Dail, every Saturday from 18 July to 22 August 2015.<\/p>\n

Units from different sections of the Defence Forces (Army, Air Corps and Naval Service) will participate in this Military Guard Ceremony to remember their comrades. More Biodiversity Monitoring Talks will take place in July on four Sundays (05+12+19+26 July) in the Arkle Room of Farmleigh House.<\/p>\n

This week’s talk is entitled: “Wild Flowers of Ireland and Farmleigh”<\/p>\n

As many species of pollinators (bees, wasps, etc) continue to decline around the world, the need to monitor them has increased. The pollinators now rely on us to provide them with a healthy habitat and in turn provide us with food and beauty. By learning a few simple steps to help provide a healthy environment, these species can then continue to provide us with useful functions such as pollination.<\/p>\n

The talks will cover various interesting aspects of Biodiversity Monitoring in Ireland including species identification, how to set up a monitoring transect & how to increase pollen and nectar sources in you garden.<\/p>\n

The event will start with a 25 minute Biodiversity presentation in the Arkle room followed by a 25 minute outdoor exploration to view some species on Farmleigh grounds. (Weather Permitting).<\/p>\n

Three city centre contemporary art galleries, the Project Arts Centre, the Temple Bar Gallery + Studios and The Douglas Hyde Gallery are joining forces to offer a guided walking tour to these venues. Nicolas Maigret exposes the internal workings of media, through an exploration of their dysfunctions, limitations or failure thresholds. After completing studies in intermedia art, Maigret joined the LocusSonus lab in Aix France, where he explored networks as a creative tool.<\/p>\n

Sven Anderson will speak about his project Continuous Drift, a public sound installation that launches this month and will be permanently integrated into Meeting House Square in Dublin. The installation acts as a framework for different sonic atmospheres that can be activated by members of the public via mobile devices, to be played back from eight loudspeakers integrated in the four retractable umbrellas that cover the square.<\/p>\n

Andr\u00e9 will describe his experience of leading MSF\u2019s emergency response to the under-reported but brutal conflict in Yemen – where thousands have been injured or killed since March of this year due to relentless airstrikes and shelling. A trade embargo, fuel shortages and water insecurity further cripple the country. MSF has treated more than 4,000 war-wounded patients and has brought in over 105 tonnes of medical aid – but more must be done for the people of Yemen.<\/p>\n

The Festival of Curiosity is a brilliant Science & Art Festival in Dublin and I hope you saw it in the Upcoming Events section for the last two weeks, because the event is very very popular and the many (but not enough) free tickets for some of the events go like hot cakes.<\/p>\n

If you got your tickets in time, all is good, but if you didn’t, then the news is unfortunately not good: All free tickets are gone! There are still tickets for a few non-free events available and there are also some drop-in activities where you don’t need tickets.<\/p>\n

Dublin Mountains Partnership – Guided Walks<\/h2>\n

Every month the Dublin Mountain Partnership runs free guided walks in the Dublin Mountains on some Saturdays or Sundays during the month. Eircode – the idiotic system that can only happen in Ireland
\n<\/strong><\/p>\n

I have to start with just one figure: 27 Million!! That’s the outrageously high amount you and I have to pay to some consultants for the idiotic Eircode system. But despite my best efforts, I still have not been able to see any justification\/explanation for such a crazy bill.<\/p>\n

The money goes to Capita Ireland, the Irish arm of a British Business Process Outsourcing company. Capita’s pays on average a salary of EUR 40,000 per person with the Chief Executive getting the mad amount of EUR 1.1mio per year. So the 27m that we have to pay, will cover the salary for 675 employees!! Does that really mean hundreds of people worked on this idiotic system? And they couldn’t come up with anything better? Shocking!<\/p>\n

But let me explain why it is so idiotic: The purpose of a Postcode system is to mae sure that TOGETHER with the address, you have a unique identification of the address. But the Irish system goes a number of steps further. The first three letters\/digits identify the area, starting with “D” for Dublin and oddly with totally random letters for the rest of the country. Instead of “G” for Galway and “C” for Cork, Galway got “H” and Cork got “T” as the leading letter. The remaining four letters and numbers identify the building exactly based on a latitude\/longitude system, not on an area system. That means that your postcode and your neighbour’s have are completely different.<\/p>\n

So if someone has to deliver 5 parcels in the area, he can’t use the four digits to guide him, instead he would have to look up each code separately and then see on a map where it is. Very complicated and time consuming and for that reason courier companies like DHL and UPS said they won’t use the system.<\/p>\n

Wait! You don’t have to use it? No, not at all! You are allowed to use it but it is not compulsory and there seems to be no plan in place to make it compulsory ever. So 27m was spent for something that we might never use!!<\/p>\n

Other madness: Approx. 50,000 Irish named addresses in the Gaeltacht were ignored. For us English-only speakers you could say that this makes sense. But in a country where there is a separate TV channel and even a minister for Gaelic speakers, it is odd to say the least. Other nonsense? Yes, many (nobody knows how many) postcodes and addresses were put in the wrong building, in some cases even in the wrong county. And also: In some apartment block every apartment has its own Eircode. Why? Nobody knows! In other apartment blocks the whole building is identified by one Eircode.<\/p>\n

Yes, Ireland needed a postcode system, but there are PLENTY of countries worldwide that have successfully working systems and it would have been perfect to adopt one of these successful systems instead of re-inventing the wheel!<\/p>\n

To find out your postcode you can go to www.eircode.ie<\/a> and type your address in. You can do that for a maximum of 15 addresses per day. Why that limitation? Nobody knows it is completely random! If you want to look up more than 15 addresses you are assumed to be a commercial operation and will have to pay for the use of the postcode system. WHAT? Yes, pay! On top of the 27m. Imagine you had to pay to use the house number in an address. It is THAT nonsensical!<\/p>\n

(By the way, the 15 address limit per day is Cookie controlled, so if you want you can modify your browser so that the limit will never be reached.)<\/p>\n

Why can this only happen in Ireland? Because it seems that Irish politicians always hide behind consultants who then screw up. So what happens in Ireland and the politicians let it happen: The wheel is re-invented, but this time we make it square because square is much better than round! That’s what we are told! Sure, Capita! Sure, Irish Government! Where can I pay? :-\/<\/p>\n<\/div>\n
