This is the City Spectacular Weekend, so make it spectacular! ;-)<\/p>\n

The Greater Dublin Area has seen some amazing festivals over the years, but unfortunately times are tough, money is tight and some organisers are better than others holding things together and for that reason, sometimes even the best festivals arrive at a road block and have to be terminated.<\/p>\n

The most painful “death” of a festival was when the “Dun Laoghaire Festival of World Cultures” was discontinued at the beginning of 2011 after 10 years of being the best festival in Ireland. (Reason: Significant overspending).
\nAnother outstanding festival that is not dead yet, but is on life support with an undetermined future is the “Dublin City Soul Festival”. Nursed through difficult years by Chris Maher and his team, but so short of funds that it had to be called off this year after 8 years and we have to wait and see if it will be back next year. Hopefully sponsors can be found so that it will be back in 2016.<\/p>\n

Luckily the third BIG and outstanding festival is still around and it is happening this week. This festival moved away from the ingeniously global and commanding name “Street Performance World Championship” and now uses the much less grande and a lot more parochial name of “City Spectacular”, but luckily the event hasn’t suffered from it. It is still one of the best Street Perfomance Events in the world and definitely the highlight of the year in Dublin.<\/p>\n

If you have never been there, do NOT miss out! And if you know the festival well, I am sure you need NO convincing. You will be there! ;-)<\/p>\n

And to make sure that the Dublin Event Guide will experience the fate of some of the other events in DUblin, there are two areas the Dublin Event Guide needs your continued help with: Your donations<\/a> help paying the bills for sending the Dublin Event Guide every week, so please help if you can. Just 1 Euro per month (12 Euro per year) would be great. Not very many subscribers are prepared to or able to help, so please don’t rely on others!<\/p>\n

A new website has been launched by the National Library at http:\/\/registers.nli.ie The website gives users access to over 370,000 digital images from parish registers for over 1000 parishes across Ireland. The records are mainly for baptisms and marriages and goes back to 1740.<\/p>\n

Access to this information is free for everyone.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n

Free Transport for children<\/h2>\n

Transport Minister Paschal Donohoe has announced that from Monday 06 July – Sun 19 July all Child Leap Card holders aged between 4-18 years) can travel free.<\/p>\n

Summer of Heritage – Dun Laoghaire-Rathdown<\/h2>\n

Dun Laoghaire-Rathdown is running their Summer of Heritage programme again and this year it will be from 29 June – 06 September.<\/p>\n

The programme is full of guided tours and other events and everything is free. 25 different venues\/locations take part and tours take place throughout the week (Not every day in evenry location, but if you are flexible, you will be able to find a tour somewhere from Monday-Sunday).<\/p>\n

Some of the locations are: Deansgrange Cemetery, Historic Milltown, Historic Blackrock, James Joyve Tower, Seapoint Martello Tower, Cabinteely House, The Metals, Historic Dun Laoghaire, Historic Dundrum, Foxrock Beckett Country Walk, Dublin Mountains Walk, Monkstown Castle and more.<\/p>\n

Nuclear burial grounds (salt mines and other underground spaces that contain nuclear waste) are marked with signs today to warn about the dangers coming from them. But Plutonium, one of the nuclear waste products has a half-life of 24,000 years and maybe we can assume that it is gone after 10 half-times, which is 240,000 years!!<\/p>\n

Now compare the wall paintings we find in caves or hieroglyphics with our ways of express information today. How can we ensure that even in 240,000 years the people living then will understand our warning signs and continue to protect and look after these nuclear burial grounds?<\/p>\n

“Riddle of the Burial Ground” attempts to imagine a time in which language, signs and forms will be beyond our current comprehension and the 16 artists involved in this exhibition expressed this through sculpture, film, photography, documentary, fiction, science-fiction, history, landscapes and imagined futures.<\/p>\n

Modern Wife, Modern Life is an exhibition exploring the \u2018ideal wife\u2019 turned \u2018modern wife\u2019 in 1960s Ireland as seen through the pages of women\u2019s magazines.<\/p>\n

Manuals on how to be a good wife had been widely available in Ireland at the start of the twentieth century, but with the emergence of new technologies, the advice extended to newly married women and housewives began to change in the 1960s. The concept of being an \u2018ideal wife\u2019 became closely bound up with being a \u2018modern wife\u2019. This is best identified in the pages of women\u2019s magazines, which came to replace the traditional manual as a source for guidance. The message, driven by the advertisers, was clear: a \u2018good wife\u2019 was not just beautifully presented, but also used all the latest \u2018modern\u2019 devices. Her home – especially the kitchen – was an extension of her appearance and reputation.<\/p>\n

The Bray Summerfest is back it seems, but is it?<\/p>\n

The website is unusable and there is virtually no information about the event, so I did some digging and it seems that after many years of a brilliant festival where Bray was big time punching above its weight, the wheels came off! Bray Municipal Council seemingly pulled the plug and the Summerfest has been cancelled<\/a>.<\/p>\n

But there are still some things happening! There will be the “Summerfest Fun Fair”, a normal Fun Fair until 03 August (Open daily: 12:00-22:00). During the week (Mon-Fri) there is a really interesting 10 ride special for EUR 12, but that doesn’t apply at the weekend.
\nAnd there will be the popular Bray Airshow next weekend. All the other events after that, which are also (still) mentioned on the website might or might not happen. I will keep you posted!!<\/p>\n

City Spectacular – Street Performance at its best!<\/h2>\n

I call the City Spectacular the “best festival of the year” and I am NOT joking!<\/p>\n

It started originally as the ingeniously titled “Street Performance World Championship” in 2006 and is running strong since. Last year it was renamed to City Spectacular and this year the event is celebrating its 10th birthday. It is sponsored by Laya Healthcare.<\/p>\n

Over the weekend (Sat+Sun) you will see amazing and outstanding Street Performers doing their full 45minute Street Performance Shows. There will be juggling, magic, acrobatics, comedy, sword swallowing and lots more. 9 performers will perform on 5 pitches in Merrion Square and outside on the street. And with 33 performances per day, that means each performer will do their show at least three times on the day.<\/p>\n

If you have been at the Street Performance World Championship in previous years , you might realise that the field of performers is a little smaller this year, but to see every performance you still need 9 hours, so you won’t get bored. ;-)<\/p>\n

Some of my highlights are the Space Cowboy from Australia who is a lovable freak, amazing performer and impressive Sword Swallower and Mario Queen of the Circus, who will hopefully perform his old\/original programme because it was just soooo great.<\/p>\n

In addition to the Street Performance, there is busking band “Keywest” performing in some of the slots on Sunday, then there is a Food Village and a Kids Court, Petting Farm and a whole children programme<\/a> organised by The Ark in an ESB-sponsored tent in the park. A Trampolin Show, Climbing Wall and the Doktor Kaboom Science Show will add even more variation.<\/p>\n

What’s your job? Enjoy the performance, take part in them by clapping and cheering and give a donation if\/when you have enjoyed it. Admission to the festival is free, but the performers don’t get paid, they only get what you and I give them after their performance.<\/p>\n

The Science Gallery exhibition “HOME\\SICK – Post-Domestic Bliss” looks at the Home and asks what “Home” really is and also how it could be improved. HOME\\SICK is the summer exhibition of the Science Gallery, which usually is the exhibition that is the most accessible and understandable for all ages and that goal was achieved again. It is not the Science Gallery’s best exhibition, but it is still definitely worth a visit.<\/p>\n

The Royal British Legion will conduct their yearly commemoration and wreath-laying ceremony at the Irish National War Memorial Gardens in Islandbridge. Everybody is welcome to attend.<\/p>\n

This event commemorates the people who lost their lives in the two World Wars, in particular the estimated 60,000 Irish men and women from all parts of the Ireland who served and died in the wars. The annual National Day of Commemoration Ceremony, to honour all Irish people who died in past wars or on service with the United Nations, will be held in the Royal Hospital Kilmainham and six other locations across Ireland.<\/p>\n

The ceremony in Dublin will be attended by the President, the Taoiseach, the Government and the Council of State, as well as members of D\u00e1il and Seanad \u00c9ireann, the Diplomatic Corps, the Judiciary and Northern Ireland representatives.<\/p>\n

Everybody is welcome to attend the ceremony, but you are asked to arrive at the Royal Hospital Kilmainham before 10:15.<\/p>\n

The ceremony will start with a multi-faith prayer, then the President will lay a wreath on behalf of the people of Ireland and there will be a parade by members of the Defence Forces.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

The Bray Summerfest is back it seems, but is it?<\/p>\n

The website is unusable and there is virtually no information about the event, so I did some digging and it seems that after many years of a brilliant festival where Bray was big time punching above its weight, the wheels came off! Bray Municipal Council seemingly pulled the plug and the Summerfest has been cancelled<\/a>.<\/p>\n

But there are still some things happening! There will be the “Summerfest Fun Fair”, a normal Fun Fair until 03 August (Open daily: 12:00-22:00). During the week (Mon-Fri) there is a really interesting 10 ride special for EUR 12, but that doesn’t apply at the weekend.
\nAnd there will be the popular Bray Airshow next weekend. All the other events after that, which are also (still) mentioned on the website might or might not happen. I will keep you posted!!<\/p>\n

City Spectacular – Street Performance at its best!<\/h2>\n

I call the City Spectacular the “best festival of the year” and I am NOT joking!<\/p>\n

It started originally as the ingeniously titled “Street Performance World Championship” in 2006 and is running strong since. Last year it was renamed to City Spectacular and this year the event is celebrating its 10th birthday. It is sponsored by Laya Healthcare.<\/p>\n

Over the weekend (Sat+Sun) you will see amazing and outstanding Street Performers doing their full 45minute Street Performance Shows. There will be juggling, magic, acrobatics, comedy, sword swallowing and lots more. 9 performers will perform on 5 pitches in Merrion Square and outside on the street. And with 33 performances per day, that means each performer will do their show at least three times on the day.<\/p>\n

If you have been at the Street Performance World Championship in previous years , you might realise that the field of performers is a little smaller this year, but to see every performance you still need 9 hours, so you won’t get bored. ;-)<\/p>\n

Some of my highlights are the Space Cowboy from Australia who is a lovable freak, amazing performer and impressive Sword Swallower and Mario Queen of the Circus, who will hopefully perform his old\/original programme because it was just soooo great.<\/p>\n

In addition to the Street Performance, there is busking band “Keywest” performing in some of the slots on Sunday, then there is a Food Village and a Kids Court, Petting Farm and a whole children programme<\/a> organised by The Ark in an ESB-sponsored tent in the park. A Trampolin Show, Climbing Wall and the Doktor Kaboom Science Show will add even more variation.<\/p>\n

What’s your job? Enjoy the performance, take part in them by clapping and cheering and give a donation if\/when you have enjoyed it. Admission to the festival is free, but the performers don’t get paid, they only get what you and I give them after their performance.<\/p>\n

This week’s talk is entitled: “Dragonflies and Damselflies of Ireland and Farmleigh”<\/p>\n

As many species of pollinators (bees, wasps, etc) continue to decline around the world, the need to monitor them has increased. The pollinators now rely on us to provide them with a healthy habitat and in turn provide us with food and beauty. By learning a few simple steps to help provide a healthy environment, these species can then continue to provide us with useful functions such as pollination.<\/p>\n

The talks will cover various interesting aspects of Biodiversity Monitoring in Ireland including species identification, how to set up a monitoring transect & how to increase pollen and nectar sources in you garden.<\/p>\n

Dublin Mountains Partnership – Guided Walks<\/h2>\n

Every month the Dublin Mountain Partnership runs free guided walks in the Dublin Mountains on some Saturdays or Sundays during the month. The walks have varying difficulty and duration and the details can be found on the Dublin Mountain Partnership website: http:\/\/www.dublinmountains.ie\/news\/upcoming_events\/?no_cache=1<\/a><\/p>\n

The next walks take place on 01+11+12+15+19+25 July.<\/p>\n

All walks are free, but pre-registration is required.<\/p>\n

In addition: From 05 July until 06 September a weekly Dublin Mountains Walk takes place as part of the Summer of Heritage programme in Dun Laoghaire-Rathdown. The walk starts at 11:00 (every Sunday) at the Barnaslingan Wood car park. It will have a 2 hour duration and max 20 people can take part. Pre book your place via heritage@dublinmountains.ie

Civil Servants in Ireland and Greece
\n<\/strong><\/p>\n

One of the biggest topics in the media at the moment is the situation in Greece. Grexit or not? Debt reduction or not? There are LOTS of questions. But interestingly I read something about Greece that I hadn’t known:<\/p>\n

+ Greece has 10.5 mio inhabitants and has approx. 800,000 civil servants.
\n+ Ireland has 4.6 mio inhabitants and has approx. 35,000 civil servants.
\n+ Germany has 80 mio inhabitants and has approx. 800,000 civil servants.
\n(The UK is seemingly even more efficient with 64 mio inhabitants and approx. 450,000 civil servants.)<\/p>\n

Does anybody see a problem? Twice the population of Ireland but 22 times the number of civil servants in Greece? Or: An 8th of the population of Germany, but the same number of civil servants?<\/p>\n

Greece should have between 70,000-100,000 civil servants in comparison to Ireland and Germany. What do the other 700,000 do??? Odd!<\/p>\n
