Hi all!<\/p>\n

There is nothing more frustrating than if you try really hard to improve something and despite all the result will be a worsening of the situation. The Dublin Event Guide arrives later and later and I am providing you with a seriously bad service at this stage. I could explain what happened in the last two nights, but at this stage I am sure I am boring you with my explanations, so I won’t even try. I will cry in my cornflakes and keep working until the final version is completed. (I am posting this version to the website and also have the updated smart phone version (which also works in every other non-smartphone browser).<\/p>\n

The mail will be sent whenever it is finished and by the looks of it this might be not before Monday (I am joking…I hope…but not that much!).<\/p>\n

More than ever I need your help, because clearly I can’t hack it on my own anymore. Grrr! I am soo sorry!<\/p>\n

There are two areas the Dublin Event Guide needs your help with: Your donations<\/a> help paying the bills for sending the Dublin Event Guide every week, so please help if you can. Just 1 Euro per month (12 Euro per year) would be great. Not very many subscribers are prepared to or able to help, so please don’t rely on others! Last week, for example, not a single person did give any donation. :-(<\/p>\n

And without you spreading the word we would have never reached 23,000 subscribers and 58,000 Facebook Likes. But it is just the start!! The goal is 50,000 subscribers and 100,000 Facebook Likes! Dublin City Traffic Plan – Dramatic changes afoot?<\/h2>\n
\n

It was clear that the LUAS interconnect will have a significant impact on traffic in the City Centre of Dublin and it also is clear that there is just too much traffic (and that INcludes buses and taxis!) in some parts of the city centre, but the proposed traffic plan is still surprising in its severity. In essence it attempts to ban all through-traffic from the City Centre and from the quays by blocking off Bachelor’s Walk, George’s Quay and Westmoreland Street and D’Olier Street.<\/p>\n

Considering that the car ban around College Green was met with SIGNIFICANT resistance by shop owners in the area and then was very much reduced in duration, these new suggestions will again find a lot of opposition and rightly so! Pedestrianisation of some additional areas in the City Centre does make sense, but that will have to include a ban on taxis and buses as well, otherwise no remarkable improvement for pedestrians is achieved.<\/p>\n

There is a lot more that could be said about the plan and I might do that at some stage in the This is Odd! section but for now, I just want to draw your attention to this new proposal and ask you to submit your opinions via the consultation website here<\/a>, before 16 July at 17:00.<\/p>\n

Clerys Departrment Store is gone for good!<\/h2>\n
\n

On Friday evening, in a shock development, staff was told that Clerys Department store in O’Connell Street would not re-open again and that all 460 people had lost their jobs. The losses were so significant that the appointed liquidator decided to close the shop with immediate effect. (Between August 2012 and January 2015, the business lost EUR 4.3 million.)<\/p>\n

Only on Friday morning the sale of the business to an Irish newly founded investment group was announced and their analysis of the company lead to the rapid closure.<\/p>\n

The department store was operating under different names and different owners for 162 years and without a doubt, the new owners will do their best to find a new tenant as soon as possible, but it won’t be easy! It is a significantly negative development that the company was not able to reduce the losses or maybe even make a profit and any new tenant will be interested in what this might say about the Irish marketplace.<\/p>\n

Zoological Museum in Dublin!?!?<\/h2>\n

Did you know that Dublin has a Zoological Museum? And that that “unknown” museum is more than 200 years old and has approximately 25,000 specimens!? It is something completely new to me and I’d say most of you hadn’t heard about it either! The Zoological Museum is part of Trinity College and is only a stone-throw away from the Science Gallery. It is not free, but at EUR 3 for adults, EUR 2 for children and EUR 10 is definitely affordable.<\/p>\n

The museum will only be open from 02 June – 30 August 2015 from Monday-Sunday 10:30-16:00. An information flyer is here<\/a>. I will definitely go there for a visit before the end of August and if you make it before me, let me know what you think of it!<\/p>\n

Science Educator Mary Mulvihill passed away<\/h2>\n
\n

Mary Mulvihill was a enthusiastic and passionate Science Educator and science journalist and she was also a real nice and interesting person. Her untimely death will be a big loss for Dublin!<\/p>\n

I found out about her death after a short illness on Twitter and it shocked me. Mary was just 55 years of age and MUCH too young to leave already.<\/p>\n

I met Mary a few times, initially talking about her Science Event website and the Dublin Event Guide and later about her great “Ingenious Ireland” project and company. She told me how much work and how little real reward the Science Event website created and maybe I should have listened to her more, it was at the early stages of the Dublin Event Guide (for Free Events).<\/p>\n

Ingenious Ireland<\/a> later created walking tours and audio guides about Science and Dublin with a particular focus on the historical side of Science in Dublin and Mary got involved in lots of Science related popular events in Dublin, like some Family-friendly Treasure Hunts. But a really big passion of hers was the whole area of “Women in Science” and she worked and supported it by organising events, talking at events and by heading up the “Women in Technology and Science (WITS)<\/span>” group for some time. In just about 10 days she was meant to give a keynote speech about “Lessons from History” at the Inspirefest!<\/p>\n

The Science Gallery exhibition “HOME\\SICK – Post-Domestic Bliss” looks at the Home and asks what “Home” really is and also how it could be improved. The 1-day conference on Saturday is about “How to Succeed as a Music Artist in the new Music Business”. It will take place in the Central Hotel in Exchequer Street and there is an admission charge of EUR 20.<\/p>\n

The Science Gallery exhibition “HOME\\SICK – Post-Domestic Bliss” looks at the Home and asks what “Home” really is and also how it could be improved. The word means something different to everyone, but how will the future of technology and design, communities, families, resources, and nations change the nature of what we define as ‘home’?<\/p>\n

HOME\\SICK is the summer exhibition of the Science Gallery, which usually is the exhibition that is the most accessible and understandable for all ages and that goal was achieved again. It is not the Science Gallery’s best exhibition, but it is still definitely worth a visit.<\/p>\n

Street Feast is a big event, but it is not done for you. Instead it is what you and others make of it.<\/p>\n

The idea behind it is to get as many people as possible across Ireland to sit down to have lunch with their neighbours. You can do that in your house, in the garden on the footpath or in a park. In some smaller streets in Dublin, neighbours even take over the whole street for their party\/festivities\/get together.<\/p>\n

You organise the Street Feast yourself in your own street or your local community and what and how you do it is completely up to you.<\/p>\n

The website below has some ideas and suggestions for your own event and there is also a list of events taking place so that you can go to one of the Streetfeasts near you even if you didn’t know that there is one.<\/p>\n

Biodiversity Monitoring Talks will take place over three Sundays (14+21+28 June) in the Arkle Room of Farmleigh House.<\/p>\n

As many species of pollinators (bees, wasps, etc) continue to decline around the world, the need to monitor them has increased. The pollinators now rely on us to provide them with a healthy habitat and in turn provide us with food and beauty. By learning a few simple steps to help provide a healthy environment, these species can then continue to provide us with useful functions such as pollination.<\/p>\n

The talks will cover various interesting aspects of Biodiversity Monitoring in Ireland including species identification, how to set up a monitoring transect & how to increase pollen and nectar sources in you garden.<\/p>\n

The event will start with a 25 minute Biodiversity presentation in the Arkle room followed by a 25 minute outdoor exploration to view some species on Farmleigh grounds. (Weather Permitting).<\/p>\n

Bike Week 2014 takes place from 13-21 June and as part of the week, a leisurely 10km cycle is planned from Blackrock Village to UCD and back.<\/p>\n

Starting in Blackrock’s Main Street and continuing along the new cycle route on Frascati Road, the cycle then travels west along Rock Road (4km route for younger children turns into Blackrock Park at Booterstown Dart Station and back to Blackrock) and turns left on Trimelstown Avenue and onto UCD via Woodbine Road.<\/p>\n

Following a short route within the UCD campus, the cycle will come back along the same route and back Blackrock via Blackrock Park.<\/p>\n

The aim of the event is to promote the new Frascati Road and Temple Hill Route Improvement Scheme and the Booterstown Dart to UCD route.<\/p>\n

Admission is free and registration starts at 14:30. There will be a range of activities and entertainment before the cycle begins and a goodie bag and refreshments will be waiting for everyone at the finish line.<\/p>\n

The event notive asks you to register via cycling@dlrcoco.ie but since that won’t reach them anymore in time, I would suggest to hope for a registration opportunity on the day in Blackrock.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

The 1-day conference on Saturday is about “How to Succeed as a Music Artist in the new Music Business”. It will take place in the Central Hotel in Exchequer Street and there is an admission charge of EUR 20.<\/p>\n

For some, Bloomsday is the high point of the year and for other it is an odd and superflous celebration of the fictional account of a day from an unreadable book.<\/p>\n

James Joyce Fans love this story from Ulysses, the unreadable book by Joyce. They dress up and recite Joyce and follow the foot steps of Leopold Bloom, the character in the book. Gorgonzola Sandwiches and Black Pudding have to be eaten, David Norris has to be listened to and David Norris-invented fancy dress has to be worn. All in all it is a harmless, fun (for Joyce fans) celebration of James Joyce that might have turned a little more pompous than Joyce would have wanted, but nevertheless it is not really offending anyone. It is interesting, though that you are either IN or OUT. Fully behind it or totally left baffled. There is no “little bit” of Bloomsday, it seems.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

Threshold Conference: ‘Generation Rent – The Future of the Private Rented Sector in Ireland’<\/p>\n

The private rented sector has doubled in size over the past decade, with one in five households in Ireland now renting from a private landlord and an even higher proportion in our urban centres. But this sector is now under pressure, with a shortage of supply, rapidly rising rents, high numbers of landlords in mortgage arrears, and concerns about the suitability of accommodation.<\/p>\n

This conference is about the future of this generation of renters, whether they are young families, single parents, immigrants or older people living alone. It is also about the over 150,000 landlords whose livelihoods, at least in part, depend on the private rented sector.<\/p>\n

This conference will explore the current challenges facing the private rented sector and what options there are for the future direction of the sector. The Mexican Tallship “The Cuauht\u00e9moc” will be in Dublin for five days and you are invited to visit the ship while it is at Sir Rogerson’s Quay. The ship is a sail training vessel of the Mexican Army and it was built in 1982 in Bilbao, Spain. The Cuauht\u00e9moc was in Dublin before, so some of you might recognise it again: In 2012 the ship was here as part of the Tall Ship Races and at that time 23,000 visitors came on board during the Dublin visit.<\/p>\n

Opening hours are Thursday-Saturday 10:00-19:00 and on Sunday 10:00-15:00. You will find in some media outlets (print and online) that the ship is open on Wednesday as well, but the Mexican Embassy thinks differently according to their website. The ship does arrive on Wednesday and is then open from Thursday.<\/p>\n

The Cuauht\u00e9moc will arrive on Wednesday at 10:00 and before entering the port it will “salute the city” with a cannon shot in Dublin Bay. The Mexican Tallship “The Cuauht\u00e9moc” will be in Dublin for five days and you are invited to visit the ship while it is at Sir Rogerson’s Quay. The ship is a sail training vessel of the Mexican Army and it was built in 1982 in Bilbao, Spain. The Cuauht\u00e9moc was in Dublin before, so some of you might recognise it again: In 2012 the ship was here as part of the Tall Ship Races and at that time 23,000 visitors came on board during the Dublin visit.<\/p>\n

Opening hours are Thursday-Saturday 10:00-19:00 and on Sunday 10:00-15:00.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

This is a Digital Environmental Humanities public lecture by Professor David J. Bodenhamer (The Polis Center, Indiana University Purdue) organised as part of the Networking the Digital Environmental Humanities Workshop.<\/p>\n

Geo-spatial technologies such as Geographical Information Systems (GIS) have transformed how the world is perceived and how cartographic (mapping) practices are conducted. But these tools are rooted in a positivist vision of the way the world is; they demand precise, measurable, abstract data. Although valuable for certain domains, they do not allow for a more complex understanding of the world as experience, expressed through emotions, values, poetics, memory, and other characteristics that define space as place. In other words these technologies largely fail to represent other ways of knowing. It is here where spatial humanities and the deep map, a new form for managing and visualizing information, become important, perhaps essential.<\/p>\n

This event will be followed by the launch of two books:
\nDeep Maps and Spatial Narratives (Indiana University Press: 2015) edited by David J. Bodenhamer, John Corrigan, and Trevor M. Harris and Abstract Machine: Humanities GIS (Esri Press: 2015) by Charles Travis.<\/p>\n

The Wellington Weekender is a three day festival in the Workman’s Club starting on Friday 19 June at 17:00 and running until Sunday night.<\/p>\n

On Friday the “A Tribe Of Nomads” will be starting the festival. They will feature Simi Crowns, DVO Marvell and Kobina.<\/p>\n

Simi Crowns is a lyricist rapper from Dublin with rhymes and unique soundscapes influenced by his African roots and other contemporaries, like Kanye West, Mos Def, Nas and old skool RnB.<\/p>\n

DVO Marvell is a Dublin hop hop artist who draws his inspiration from contemporary hip hop but also resepcts hip hop\u2019s earlier generations, Madlib, A Tribe Called Quest and Q-Tip. Kobina is Dublin based producer Sean Arthur, who has played Electric Picnic, Longitude and lots of high profile support acts to boot.<\/p>\n

Following A Tribe Of Nomads, there will be The Connoisseur Soul Sessions and Northern Soul Club Night on until late.<\/p>\n

Upstairs, DJs will keep you dancing.<\/p>\n

The Chocolate Factory will host a weekend-long (19-21 June) furniture and interiors exhibition and pop-up shop showcasing the work of some of the in-house designers along with invited guests. The whole weekend event is free and along with the opportunity to browse the exhibition and purchase directly from the makers, there will be drop-in family friendly workshops and a chance to hear from the exhibiting designers in a series of short pop-up talks.<\/p>\n

On Friday Night the Launch Night will take place:
\nA special launch night event with a preview of the Chocolate Factory Collection furniture and interiors exhibition and pop-up shop and a Design Caf\u00e9 event where participants can sign up for mini-consultation sessions with a designer, interior designer or architect in an enjoyable and informal setting. Are you going to “Movies on the Beach DUBLIN”? – NO, you are not!!!
\n<\/strong><\/p>\n

Are you one of the 46,000 (!!!!) people that are going to the event “Movies on the Beach Dublin”? Fourty-six-THOUSAND!! That would be a busy beach! If you did declare on Facebook that you are going to this event<\/a>, I have bad news for you. You are most likely not going to it. Why so?<\/p>\n

Let’s have a look at Facebook announcement: Somebody…and it could be you!….called him\/herself “Movie on the Beach Dublin” and invited to an event on a specified date (Sunday 02 August) at an unspecified location using a photoshopped picture from a hotel in Bali. The person didn’t give any contact information and is quite unresponsive on the Facebook Event Page. For some odd reason, it turned into a frenzy and 46,000 people said that they are going with many asking where they can buy tickets.<\/p>\n

Why did it turn into a frenzy is anybody’s guess. It’s not that we don’t have cinemas and its not that the beaches are not there at other times. It is not either a rare occurrence that you can watch a movie outdoors, that has happened numerous times last year and earlier this year and will happen again during the summer. One example are the movie screenings organised by “Happenings”, which usually cost EUR 5-10 and sometimes are even free, when on Grand Canal Plaza. At no previous film screening that really took place in Dublin has been interest that came close to these numbers, so what is so magical about this event? Maybe it is the beach? Maybe the expectation that when something happens on a beach, automatically the weather will be super hot. Or maybe it is the hope that that movie screening will turn into a massive beach party (obviously with the super weather included). If you have clicked on JOIN, then you know better than I do what the fascination is.<\/p>\n

How real is such an event? The person posting the event couldn’t have known how many will be interested. So we can’t say he\/she is totally unrealistic. On the other hand, not indicating that there might be a limit in posts since the high interest was detected is probably intentional. And it is misleading.<\/p>\n

Can such an event be organised for 46,000? Absolutely not! Can it be done for 10,000? Still too much! Can it be done for 5000? We are getting closer. Realistically, it can be done for about 1000-3000 people.
\nIn Sydney, Australia the “St George OpenAir Cinema” has a 350 square meter cinema screen, and 32 speakers and caters for 1,900 people. A film festival in the Pula Arena, a 2000 year old amphitheatre in Pula in Croatia, can in a stadium environment host approx. 5000 people. Germany’s biggest movie event the “Filmn\u00e4chte am Elbufer” in Dresden has standing room for 12,000 and sitting rom for 3,500 people.<\/p>\n

But for such an amount of people, the screen has the be massive and the sound system enormous, And to build that on a beach ( I guess Dollymont Strand would be the only one big enough!?) is a big job.<\/p>\n

So your chance shrunk by a factor of 9 when this reduced the max number from 46,000 to 5,000.<\/p>\n

But the probability that you will be at a Movie Screening on a beach will shrink a LOT further because many think that the whole event is just fake.<\/p>\n

Maybe the poster wanted to market research to see if there would be interest in such an event OR it was a test balloon to get a sponsor on board: “I can get you 46k attendees, if you can somehow finance my huge budget.”<\/p>\n

For an event of that size on public land, a formal planning application is required, proof of insurances and lots of other formalities are required. And the risk that this event would turn into a massive beach party with (smuggled in) alcohol and all other shenanigans, will scare the livin’ daylight out of any authority.<\/p>\n

So, 46,000 people on a beach in Dublin ain’t gonna happen! And the small sized event? Most likely not either.<\/p>\n

(Ohh, and if you are still convinced that that event is genuine and definitely going ahead, then I assume you also had signed up for “The Moonlight Cinema comes to Dublin<\/a>“, a Facebook event that got 65,000 (!!) people to declare their intention to go to this event TONIGHT (Friday) and which was totally unexpectedly ;-) only three days ago postponed to 03 July. Reason: “an unfortunate delay in the delivery of Moonlight Cinema film licensing”. Because there are soooo many people wanting to go, you now could increase your chances of getting a ticket by filling in your name, e-mail address and Date of Birth in a form. Sure, no problem! Can I please give you my credit card details too!?)<\/p>\n<\/div>\n
