\nJust a quick explanation about what went wrong this week: I was away on holidays until Thursday evening, then I started working and I normally work through the night, but this time I was not able to keep my eyes open and wasted hours fighting against the sleep. Result: Sleep 1 – Joerg 0. Friday night was not much better.
\nFinally, on Saturday I posted the web version at around 11:00 and also the smart phone version but I still had a whole list of events to go through. Then my database system crashed and it looked as if I had lost everything, but some work and some luck and I recovered most. But with all this it meant that the final version was only posted and then sent by e-mail to everyone after 18:00. A total write off, for the key day Saturday. I know and I apologise! I am very frustrated about it, but wasn’t able to do any better. Better next week? I really hope so!<\/p>\n

I was hoping that it would be with you much earlier because this week is the 8th Birthday of the Dublin Event Guide (for Free Events), but I only came back from holidays late on Thursday night and must have too good a holiday: I couldn’t keep my eyes open while working through the two nights. :-(<\/p>\n

Just 1 Euro per month (12 Euro per year) would be great. Not very many subscribers are prepared to or able to help, so please don’t rely on others! 8th Birthday for the Dublin Event Guide (for Free Events)<\/h2>\n

In early June of 2007, I sent the first e-mail entitled “Dublin Event Guide” to about 10 friends. It came as a result of having been at a number of really good events that were poorly frequented and subsequently finding out that my friends hadn’t heard about these events.<\/p>\n

Today, I can report that at 416 issues (and having never missed a week in all this time), this week is the 8th anniversary of the Dublin Event Guide (for Free Events). This week’s edition will reach more than 23,500 subscribers and we have more than 58,000 Facebook Likes and more than 11,000 users of the smart phone app.<\/p>\n

The Dublin Event Guide (for Free Events) is still a one-man band, and I have to admit that this one man is a little proud today on having reached this goal, considering that this was never planned initially! ;-)<\/p>\n

Thanks for all your support because this publication would not exist without you, your support (financially and otherwise) and for your help in spreading the word all the time!<\/p>\n

Parnell Square redevelopment for 60mio<\/h2>\n

Dublin’s new cultural quarter will be around Parnell Square when the total refurbishment of that area is completed in (or after) 2019. It will cost at least 60mio and will provide a brand new home for the Central Library, a 200 seat auditorium, a new civic plaza and a new park. Councillors will decide on Monday, but after everything is confirmed on the planning side, it is expected that all will be approved.<\/p>\n

Running a company or planning to start one? Read this!<\/h2>\n

If you are running a small company or are planning to start one then you have to look into all the changes the new Company Act brought with it that has replaced the old laws on 01 June.<\/p>\n

Many current business owners are already at least partially aware of some or all changes, but for some smaller companies, the focus might be on acquiring customers and these law changes are further down the priority list, but don’t forget about it, because it does affect you!<\/p>\n

For people that plan to start a new company soon, make sure that you read up on all the changes. Most of the new rules simplify the setting up even more than before, but you need to learn a good bit new if you had looked into it before June.<\/p>\n

There are many resources like the ones below around and you will find them when you search on Google for “New Companies Act Ireland”, but the new act has more than 1100 pages so it is some monster piece of law.<\/p>\n

New weekly Dublin Online Newspaper: Dublin Inquirer<\/h2>\n

A new weekly online newspaper was launched. It is called “Dublin Inquirer” and will be published every Wednesday.<\/p>\n

We need to wait and see how it will be different from the big newspapers and their online offerings, but the weekly publication and the non-internationality regarding the news reports already indicates that it might more compete with the freesheets from the “DublinPeople” Group (i.e. Southside People and Northside People, etc) and with the Gazette Group and not with the Irish Times or Irish Independent etc and also not with Waterford Whispers and Broadsheet.<\/p>\n

Only time will tell if the Dublin Inquirer can find a niche that will ensure its survivability. I read somewhere that they might plan to issue a printed version at some stage in the future, but – as we know – that has killed other and more established newspapers.<\/p>\n

The one-day interdisciplinary workshop “Master of Misinformation: William Le Queux, Invasion Scares and Spy Fever, 1880-1930” will take place on Tuesday.<\/p>\n

It will investigate the life and work of the colourful and controversial popular author, journalist, and amateur spy William Le Queux. The workshop focuses on the phenomenon of British invasion and spy scare fiction and its contribution to the climate of militarism and anxiety that preceded the Great War.<\/p>\n

The workshop brings together William Le Queux scholars from around the world with a view to producing an edited collection of essays offering new thoughts\/approaches to Le Queux. Speakers include: Michael Hughes (Lancaster), Anthony Taylor (Sheffield Hallam) and Michael Matin (Warren Wilson).<\/p>\n

The keynote address will be delivered by Roger Stearn, whose biographical article \u2018The Mysterious Mr Le Queux\u2019 is one of the best examinations of Le Queux\u2019s unusual life.<\/p>\n

As part of the Summer Rising Festival, the Irish Museum of Modern Art will run two 3-day long workshops for teens. They both run from Tuesday 09 June until 11 June. The 12-15 year olds have theirs at 11:00-13:00 and the older group has the timeslot 14:00-16:00.<\/p>\n

The participants will meet artists, explore exhibitions, discuss ideas, and make artworks in the studios: join artist Janine Davidson for an exciting 3-day workshop inspired by the artist Stan Douglas. This workshop will explore history and narrative with analogue and digital technologies, and create with daily outputs to be shared on social media.<\/p>\n

“Inspired by Stan Douglas\u2019s play Helen Lawrence (2014) we will make a stage set, with the use of overhead projectors, transparencies, props and perhaps their own bodies. This will set a scene from which we will develop multiple narratives. The narrative will be inspired by the architecture and grounds of the museum. It will also be informed by the IMMA Collection Show Fragments and the current Heritage exhibition which explores the history of the building to the present day. Combining elements from the Past, Present and Future, each person will create a fragment of the story. Our daily events we will be published through social media the aim is to question the traditional model of storytelling, of a beginning middle and end, instead offering variable and diverse outcomes.”<\/p>\n

Ireland\u2019s newly-appointed Head of Lobbying Regulation Ms Sherry Perreault will deliver a special lunchtime lecture at the launch of TASC\u2019s new Toolkit to Open Government.<\/p>\n

Sherry Perreault will give a talk on the new online registration system for lobbying, which follows the recent enactment of the Regulation of Lobbying Act 2015.<\/p>\n

The new system is designed to provide information to the public about who is lobbying whom about what. It is a key element of a series of legal reforms by the Department of Public Expenditure and Reform which are designed to open government decisions up to fuller public scrutiny.<\/p>\n

Before her talk, Sherry Perreault will formally launch TASC\u2019s new Toolkit to Open Government. This is a set of practical guides that aim to help citizens and organisations to more effectively seek official information, understand and query public decision-making, and promote alternatives.<\/p>\n

I totally missed the start and I wonder if you did too. Maybe this year the “Temple Bar Night Market” wasn’t advertised that well? Or did I just not see it?<\/p>\n

The market struggles a little with being more an afternoon and evening market. From 15:00-20:00 is not really delivering on the name! And in previous years the missing food and drink stalls at the market (probably to protect the pubs and restaurants in Temple Bar) was mentioned by visitors as a limit to the attractiveness of the market.<\/p>\n

Until 19 August there will be a Temple Bar AFTERNOON and EVENING Market (let’s not call it a Night Market!! :-) ) every Wednesday with art and crafts.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

The 1-day conference on Saturday is about “How to Succeed as a Music Artist in the new Music Business”. It will take place in the Central Hotel in Exchequer Street and there is an admission charge of EUR 20.<\/p>\n

In addition, over the whole weekend, from Friday until Sunday, there will be a vast amount (more than 60!) of bands and acts performing on a Busker Stage and in the Mercantile and Sweeney’s.<\/p>\n

It is becoming a pet hate of mine and I can see that quite soon, I will just bin all mails without anything in the subject line.<\/p>\n

I get hundreds of mails per day and it takes a significant amount of time to check all mails. The easier the sender makes it for me to understand in what category that mail belongs, the faster I can sort and get through the mails, but lately I seem to get more and more mails where the sender has decided that giving me an early idea of what the mail is about, is just too much hassle for him\/her. If the sender doesn’t care, why would I? In the words of famous Sweet Brown: Ain’t nobody got time for this! ;-) (https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=waEC-8GFTP4<\/a>)<\/p>\n

The inventors of written communication decided that headlines are a great way to introduce a topic to the reader because it summarises what he\/she will find in the remaining text and headlines still make a LOT of sense.<\/p>\n

So if you have something to say AND you want to be heard, then park your laziness or subject-line-rebellism for a moment and spend the 5 seconds of putting something in the subject line of your e-mails. If you don’t do that, I just have to assume that your mail can’t be worth much, after all you didn’t even put any effort in convincing me that I should read it.<\/p>\n

NO problem about any random mail, but if someone wants me to help them promote their event, you would expect that they want to help me to want to help them, if you get my drift? Odd!<\/p>\n
