Yes, you are seeing right. It is a Dublin Event Guide in your Inbox that has arrived BEFORE Saturday. It was the norm in earlier years of the Dublin Event Guide, but for quite some time it is a rarity. I hope you enjoy it and get an even better chance to use all the information that it contains.<\/p>\n

I wish I could promise or even guarantee that that is the new publishing time from now on, but unfortunately I can’t promise that. To achieve it, I had to start working on it already on Tuesday and I won’t be able to do that normally. The exceptional circumstances are that I will be on holidays from Friday until next Thursday. Nearly a week of holidays!? That is also a rarity. ;-) Nevertheless, don’t fret, the Dublin Event Guide will also reach you next week: As soon as I arrive in Dublin, I will start working on it on Thursday night.<\/p>\n

A sizeable logistical challenge, but I hope it will all work out and nobody will be disappointed.<\/p>\n

Even while I am away, I need your help and it the same as every week, but it is really really important:<\/p>\n

There are two areas the Dublin Event Guide needs your help with: Your donations<\/a> help paying the bills for sending the Dublin Event Guide every week, so please help if you can. Just 1 Euro per month (12 Euro per year) would be great. Not very many subscribers are prepared to or able to help, so please don’t rely on others! Last week, for example, not a single person did give any donation. :-(<\/p>\n

And without you spreading the word we would have never reached 23,000 subscribers and 57,000 Facebook Likes. But it is just the start!! The goal is 50,000 subscribers and 100,000 Facebook Likes! Big goals, I know, but I believe we can achieve it! Imagine if everyone just got ONE additional person to subscribe to the Dublin Event Guide (for Free Events). The Riverfest along the Liffey is always a good reason to get out on the June Bank Holiday weekend if you are not going to Bloom in Phoenix Park, where more than 100,000 people will be. The Riverfest was once the Maritime Festival and it has changed since, but it is still worth a visit. Bloom Fringe is an alternative to Bloom with more of a focus on people getting together and on collaboration. 36 events are part of Bloom Fringe and you should find something<\/p>\n

“New” People’s Park in Dun Laoghaire<\/h2>\n

After an extensive refurbishment, the People’s Park in Dun Laoghaire was re-launched again in its original Victorian layout. Less hard surfacing and more soft landscaping features will be found there now and the pavillion building has migrated from a tea house to a restaurant.<\/p>\n

I have to admit that without seeing it myself, I can’t imagine what the changes are and I would suggest the same to you! Go there, and check it out. The People’s Park Market is every Sunday, so that might be an added reason to have a look.<\/p>\n

Colla Castellera (Human Towers) in Ireland<\/h2>\n

Human towers “castells” are one of the most unique traditions in Catalonia built traditionally in festivals at many locations within Catalonia. At these festivals, several colles castelleres or teams often succeed in building and dismantling a tower’s structure.<\/p>\n

And the Colla Castelleras have found their way to Dublin. A new group is starting to make these human towers in Dublin and they want to invite everyone to participate and join them. The BloomFringe Festival doesn’t have much to do with Bloom in Phoenix Park, apart from the fact that they happen on the same weekend and that there is also a Gardening aspect to Bloom Fringe. And Bloom Fringe is full of really intersting events between Saturday 30 May and Monday 01 June.<\/p>\n

There are open days, talks, retail trails, secret dublin tours, workshops, art installations and foodie pop-up moments and social enterprise and inspired collaboration are core elements of Bloom Fringe. And creativity, community, healthy living and sustainable biodiversity are really important as well.<\/p>\n

A few events are explicitly mentioned in this Dublin Event Guide, but there are soo many Bloom Fringe events (at least 36) – and the majority are free – that it doesn’t make sense to list them all. The BloomFringe Festival doesn’t have much to do with Bloom in Phoenix Park, apart from the fact that they happen on the same weekend and that there is also a Gardening aspect to Bloom Fringe. And Bloom Fringe is full of really intersting events between Saturday 30 May and Monday 01 June.<\/p>\n

There are open days, talks, retail trails, secret dublin tours, workshops, art installations and foodie pop-up moments and social enterprise and inspired collaboration are core elements of Bloom Fringe. And creativity, community, healthy living and sustainable biodiversity are really important as well.<\/p>\n

The BloomFringe Festival doesn’t have much to do with Bloom in Phoenix Park, apart from the fact that they happen on the same weekend and that there is also a bit of a Gardening aspect to Bloom Fringe. The yearly Women’s Mini Marathon, a 10km run\/jog\/walk for women only, will take place again this Bank Holiday Monday.<\/p>\n

It is not a free event and registration is closed by now, but you are still invited and welcome to support the runners by cheering them on. There is usually a great atmosphere and any support is appreciated.<\/p>\n

Over 40,000 (!!!) participants are expected and many form our Dublin Event Guide Community are taking part. Have a great walk\/jog\/run and “Well done!” for taking part!!<\/p>\n

The event starts at Baggot Street Upper and then goes via Pembroke Road and Merrion Road to Nutley Lane towards the RTE mast. At Stillorgan Road runners will turn left to run a loop and then turn back to run into town via Donnybrook Road, Morehampton Road and Leeson Street with the Finnish in Fitzwilliam Street.<\/p>\n

Roads in that area of South Dublin will be closed for many hours, some from 06:00 in the morning and until 19:30. So ideally avoid the area if you only want to pass through.<\/p>\n

Advise for runners: If you travel by car to the race, you need to leave it a good bit away from the course, but be careful! Leave NOTHING in the car. A few years ago I saw two or three broken-in cars of participants on car parks in Clontarf with basjed side windows.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

“James Joyce\u2019s Dubliners contains references to approximately 200 locations in and outside of Dublin. When read carefully, it is also possible to extrapolate distinct routes, intersecting and overlapping paths that link characters and narratives together. To reveal the geospatial patterns and play, it is necessary to visualize the geographic references on a map. To this end, the Mapping Dubliners Project, begun in 2010, is a digital tool that utilizes Google Maps and Google Earth to locate and display each of the places and routes referenced in Dubliners.

Green Drinks is a monthly event in 711 cities around the world to bring people with an interest in green issues together. At this month\u2019s Dublin event, the topic is “Pollinators, why we need them”<\/p>\n

Dara Stanley from TCD Botany Department will talk about how pollination by bees, hoverflies and other insects is being increasingly recognised as a important wildlife service with real economic value. However these services are being threatened by a range of human activity. Dara is involved in the SYMBIOSYS project which is looking at all these threats in Ireland and how our changing land use is impacting on our pollinators.<\/p>\n

Entry charges at nearly all OPW sites are waived once a month. The Office of Public Works (OPW) wants to encourage people to visit the historic sites that it manages and has therfore started this initiative in 2011.<\/p>\n

William Butler Yeats received a Chinese carved stone in lapis lazuli as a 70th birthday present from the poet, Harry Clifton. ‘Lapis Lazuli’, one of his best-known later poems, was inspired by the carving and dedicated to Clifton.<\/p>\n

In this lecture, Professor Jerusha McCormack uses her experience of teaching in and about China to decode this poem as it moves from Western versions of immortality to the more elusive Chinese vision as inscribed in the carvings of this artefact.<\/p>\n

\nThe principal area of his work has always been medieval Florentine literature, especially historiography and the writings

Vokalensemble St. Lorenz is the chamber choir of the largest Protestant church in Bavaria. With 35 singers, the Vokalensemble regularly sings during the services at St. Lorenz and at a number of concerts covering all musical eras from Renaissance to contemporary music.<\/p>\n

At the concert in Dublin, the programme consists of many kinds of Protestant church music: Rarely performed Gospel motets by various composers (Raselius, Vulpius, Franck, Briegel), true gemstones of choral music from renaissance and early baroque. Psalms in form of works by Swiss composer Willy Burkhard (20th century) and Felix Mendelssohn. Liturgical music is represented by Kyrie and Gloria from Frank Martin\u2019s Mass for two four-part choirs, and finally the concert will be completed by one of the flagships of a cappella choral music, Johann Sebastian Bach\u2019s motet for double choir \u201cThe spirit doth our weakness help\u201d.<\/p>\n

See you next Sunday? Which NEXT Sunday?
\n<\/strong><\/p>\n

<\/strong>It is confusing me and seemingly many other people as well for years. You tell someone that you meet him\/her next Sunday and unless you know each other well, there is a high probability that you will be asked WHICH Sunday is “next” Sunday for you. And in my case, I find out nearly everytime that people I am talking to have difficulties with this little adjective.<\/p>\n

Imagine you stand in a line with a few other people to your left and to your right. If someone looked at you and asked you “WHo is the person next to you on your right?” where would you point? To the person that is so close that he\/she touches your arm? Or would you skip that person and point to the one that is more than an armslength away and where another person is between you and the one you point to? I’d bet all my money that you would point to the person that is touching your arm. True?<\/p>\n

So what black magic happens when we talk about days of the week?<\/p>\n

If it is Monday and I tell you, let’s meet next Wednesday, then OBVIOUSLY (to me!) this is the day just two days away, but that is the next closest Wednesday to today. I would NEVER think of the Wednesday that is 9 days away, because it is NOT the NEXT one!<\/p>\n

And before you tell me that there is a difference between “this” Wednesday and “next” Wednesday, I will have to tell you that “this” Wednesday is the NEXT Wednesday that will follow today in our example.<\/p>\n

How can ANYBODY think that “next” is not really “next”, but skips one in between? Odd!!!!<\/p>\n<\/div>\n
