Hi all!<\/p>\n

I screwed up! Or rather my body didn’t conform with what my mind had planned. I was not able to work the long hours through the night this week and constantly fell asleep in front of my computer. The result is that this edition is even later again. And I have no words for my disappointment in this. Well, the only good thing is that I can guarantee that you will get the Dublin Event Guide a lot earlier next week. I hope that will compensate a little for the late arrival this week. (I know it doesn’t really!)<\/p>\n

The big events this weekend are the Africa Day on Sunday, and Battle for the Bay on both Saturday and Sunday.<\/p>\n

This weekend the Dublin City Soul Festival was meant to happen and at least for Saturday, the weather looks amazing, but unfortunately the Soul Festival has been canceled.<\/p>\n

Light & Shadow in UCD on Saturday also looks really interesting and so does the Renegade Hip Hop performance on Smithfield Plaza on on Saturday+Sunday.<\/p>\n

If you have kids, look into How? in Shankill for Sunday, it is a Science & Technology Festival for kids.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

Tea\/Coffee Houses for Dublin’s Parks<\/h2>\n
\n

Dublin City Council has launched an initiative to enhance visitors\u2019 experience of Dublin by providing tearooms in city parks where there is demand and the first one was opened last week in St. Patrick’s Park next to St. Patrick’s Cathedral.<\/p>\n

Last summer a similar venue was opened in Harold’s Cross Park and there are plans to open new tea\/coffe rooms in Herbert Park and St Anne\u2019s Park this year.<\/p>\n

Since there is nothing like that in the direct neighbourhood of St. Patrick’s Park this makes a lot of sense for this busy park in good weather. Herbert Park, on the other hand, doesn’t seem busy enough to ensure a tenant can survive there and doesn’t St. Anne’s Park already have a coffee shop in the Stables? And does anybody know if the Harold’s Cross Park tearoom is still open?<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n

You missed Pint of Science!? – There is good news!<\/h2>\n

If you missed Pint of Science, the great Science Talk festival from 18-20 May that featured lots of talks about 12 different topics from the categories The Mind, Physics, Technology and The Body. then you are not the only one. The Festival was so fast booked out that it didn’t even get mentioned in the Dublin Event Guide (for Free Events).<\/p>\n

I know heard that the Irish talks are uploaded on YouTube, but unfortuantely that doesn’t seem the case, Only some talks for onecategory are available: If Physics is your area of interest, the news is good. Three of the talks are now available on YouTube here<\/a>.<\/p>\n

That’s only a small subset of all talks , so I cast my web a bit wider and found out that the US Pint of Science Festival has made a lot more talks available on YouTube. Just search for “Pint of Science” in YouTube.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n

7TH AND 8TH BODY PAINTING JAM – SATURDAY+SUNDAY 10:00-18:00
\nThis is a meet up day for body painters, models, and photographers. It kicks off at 10:00 in The Back Loft and you can come for one day or for two days. You don’t need to have any experience as a body painter, a lot of the people on the day will be complete beginners, along with more experienced artists. You also don’t need to be a ‘model’ to model for the day, you just need a body with skin. Full nud ity is allowed, but not compulsory by any means. Wear what you feel comfortable in. Create any design you like!

The Aer Lingus Volleyball Club is celebrating its 30th anniversary this year and to mark this they are organizing a World Airlines Volleyball Tournament on the weekend of 22-24 May 2015.<\/p>\n

18 teams from all around the world will participate. They are coming from Australia, Hong Kong, Dubai, Amsterdam, Cologne, Frankfurt, Hamburg, Paris, Lisbon, London, Nice, Poland, Zurich, Vienna and Dublin.<\/p>\n

The main day of the tournament is on Saturday 23 May, with matches starting at 09:00 and the final is scheduled to start at 17:20. The event is free and everyone is welcome to come and watch volleyball while meeting people from different parts of the world.<\/p>\n

Unfortunately I wasn’t able to find out if there are any interesting events happening on Sunday and if we – the public – are invited to them. But maybe you can find out when you go to the tournament on Saturday.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

Irish Theatre Company Monkeyshine will come to St. Patrick’s Park next weekend for a whole range of free activities and performances as part of the International Literature Festival Dublin (ILFD).<\/p>\n

They are bringing The Vagabond, the company’s wonderful wandering venue, to Dublin, for a day of free story-telling activities in St Patrick\u2019s Park on Saturday 23 May. From this magical space they will be telling tales of Alice in Wonderland, and – working with Mr Leon, a flamboyant Parisian taxi driver – they will help their audience to tell their own stories of taxi rides – real or imaginary. Monkeyshine\u2019s \u201cStory Weavers\u201d events will also invite all listeners to hunt for their own story – in the park foraging for materials, and then back to the tent to weave their own tale from the ingredients they have found.<\/p>\n

The Science Gallery exhibition “HOME\\SICK – Post-Domestic Bliss” looks at the Home and asks what “Home” really is and also how it could be improved. HOME\\SICK is the summer exhibition of the Science Gallery, which usually is the exhibition that is the most accessible and understandable for all ages and that goal was achieved again. It is not the Science Gallery’s best exhibition, but it is still definitely worth a visit.<\/p>\n

Africa Day is back and will happen again in Farmleigh House this year.<\/p>\n

There will be three music stages with headliers on Stage 1, the Kwassa Kwassa stage (Kila, Loah, Tig Linn, RiZA and Kiruu), emerging rap and hip hop on the Atilogwu stage (DJ Wax, Pop Dogg, The Motivators etc) and African bands and Singer\/Songwriters on Stage 3, the Malika Stage (Rhythm Africana will be the headliner). On the Africa Day Facebook Page you can find a timetable of all performances and the link is here<\/a>.<\/p>\n

There will also be Family Fun, an African Bazaar, stalls of community groups, food stalls and more. If you come in your best traditional African clothes, you can win the “Best Dressed” competition.<\/p>\n

Admission to Africa Day is free and everybody is invited.<\/p>\n

Because Farmleigh House is a little tricky to get to and parking is very limited, Dublin Bus is providing a free shuttle bus service from the bus stop opposite the main entrance to the Phoenix Park at Parkgate Street to the main entrance into Farmleigh Estate. Groups led by Cote Calmet, Sean Maynard Smith, Dominic Mullan, Paddy Groenland, Georgia Cusack & Alex Mathias are performing regularly with occasional guest players, but there are also other bands from all over.<\/p>\n

Admission is free, with a suggested donation of EUR 5. The website clearly says that there is no entry fee, but – and that makes a lot of sense – that your donations are very much appreciated (Musicians need to pay for rent and food too!) Be generous after the gig if you liked it, but if someone wants to charge an admission charge, please point out that the “rules” as described on their website are like I have explained.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

Ireland, a Catholic banana republic?
\n<\/strong><\/p>\n

<\/strong>Let me start with a disclaimer: I am catholic and I do go to church. I am very much what strict catholics call an “a la card” catholic. I choose some elements for me and ignore others. And most importantly I am a strong proponent of tolerant acceptance of all religions and other believes and of complete separation of religious and state matters. But at the same time I am German and that means that rules are needed and these rules should be clear and non-quibbleable (I made that non-existing word up…so much about sticking to strict rules, right? ;-) )<\/p>\n

With that in mind, imagine my shock and abhorrence when I read on Friday on the RTE News website<\/a>, that bibles were provided to Polling Stations in cases “where a presiding officer asks a voter with no identification to swear an oath”!<\/p>\n

WHAT???<\/p>\n

So, you find a polling card that is not yours and for which you clearly have no identification and you will be allowed to vote just by putting your hand on a book and declaring that you are that person?? I so hope that I got that wrong!?<\/p>\n

Because if I didn’t get it wrong, I should leave my passport at home next time I travel and ask for a bible at Dublin airport.<\/p>\n

What Banana republic do we live in where a) you are allowed to vote without and identification, b) where a religious book and a few words count more than a formal, state issued document and c) where the Department of Environment explains that as if it was the most normal thing in the world.<\/p>\n

To buy a phone and get services from a company, I need an ID and also a proof of address. To vote in a constitution changing referendum, I just need a book and a promise. *shaking head*<\/p>\n

What if I am a Trekkie? Will then a Star Trek DVD replace the book? Or as Rastafarian? Just bring the Holy Piby?<\/p>\n

It gets better!! It seems there is a bit of a preference for catholicism, because if you are not religious you can just “make an affirmation” says the Department of Environment, you don’t even need a book! I should try that next time I am at a traffic checkpoint: “I can positively affirm that my name is Enda Kenny…and that I will pay that speeding ticket when you send it to me.”<\/p>\n

Looks like a Banana Republic to me!!!<\/p>\n<\/div>\n
