Hi all!<\/p>\n

Last week I mentioned that we had reached 56,000 Likes and within a couple of days that number switftly grew to 57,000. Nice! You wonder what happened? Well, a lot actually. ;-)<\/p>\n

I asked on Facebook for suggestions how to increase our Dublin Event Guide Community on Facebook, but also in the people that have subscribed to the weekly e-mail magazine and I got a lot of good suggestions! Among them was a message from the people behind studynotes.ie, they had created a Facebook event called “Free events in Dublin: Summer2015” and it went absolutely viral! Within less than 24 hours the event notice reached more than 60,000 people! (Respect to the studynotes.ie team!!)<\/p>\n

I am sure many of you saw that event as well and three Dublin Event Guide supporters (A big thanks to Patricia Keane, Clodagh O’Connor and Martin O’Sullivan!!) mentioned that the “Dublin Event Guide (for Free Events)” brings you free events the whole year around. Just because of that within two two days our Facebook Community grew by about 1200 people and a few hundred new subscribers found us. Welcome everybody! ;-)<\/p>\n

Like a virus epidemic in real life (I learned that in the Science Gallery some while back!), the growth came soon after to a sudden halt at the nevertheless impressive number of 81.000 people. It’s a pity that not all 81,000 found us, but I am happy about every little direct or indirect success!<\/p>\n

For all the people that now found us, but also if you are with me on this path for some time, please know that you don’t HAVE to do anything of what I am asking you now here, but you also know that only with your help, the Dublin Event Guide will be able to continue:<\/p>\n

There are two areas the Dublin Event Guide needs your help with: Your donations<\/a> help paying the bills for sending the Dublin Event Guide every week, so please help if you can. Just 1 Euro per month (12 Euro per year) would be great. Not very many subscribers are prepared to or able to help, so please don’t rely on others! Last week, for example, not a single person did give any donation. :-(<\/p>\n

And without you spreading the word we would have never reached 23,000 subscribers and 57,000 Facebook Likes. But it is just the start!! The goal is 50,000 subscribers and 100,000 Facebook Likes! Big goals, I know, but I believe we can achieve it! Imagine if everyone just got ONE additional person to subscribe to the Dublin Event Guide (for Free Events). That would be an immediate increase by a few thousand subscribers. Would be super!!!! Can you help?<\/p>\n

Here is the explanation regarding donations: To send the Dublin Event Guide and for domain names and for web hosting, I have a monthly bill of EUR 190 to cover. This is not for me, but all that money goes directly to external service providers. I am working approx. 35 hours on the Dublin Event Guide every week and don’t make any cent, that’s why I ask you to help with the cost if you can. If you can spare EUR 1 per month (that’s just 25 cent per edition!!) please donate EUR 12 for the year (or more if you can …or even less if you can’t). You wonder why I added this section to this e-mail magazine? If your week was great, you might not need it, but most of us had some challenging moments in the last week and there could be more in the coming week and this section is for the people that want to overcome the hurdles, achieve more and remember that despite all, life is great!<\/p>\n

Today’s feel good slot is a video clip of a super-talented 11 year old. It just inspires and amazes me when I see what outstanding feats some kids are able to achieve. As grown ups we (often happily!) surround ourselves with limitations. “I can’t do this and can’t do that because….” But when we were kids we originally didn’t have these limitations until someone GAVE you a limitation and you accepted to run with it, like “You are not good at maths.” or “You are not sporty!”.<\/p>\n

Look at 11 year old Joey Alexander who learned playing Jazz piano mainly by listening to records. He is absolutely amazing. A really interesting film clip and make sure you listen to what the grown-ups have to say about this kid!!<\/p>\n

A weekend singing workshop with international vocal coach Jasmin Martorell will take place in the Harbour Playhouse. It is an intense and rewarding workshop suitable for non-singers to professionals.<\/p>\n

\u201cWith emphasis on breathing and vocal exercises, Jasmin\u2019s enthusiastic teaching and expert understanding of the vocal instrument give the participant the confidence and skill to develop their natural voice to its full potential. The work will be based on how to place your voice, how to breathe and how to reinforce the abdominal muscles, with development of the agility of vocal cords and awakening\/developing of the resonators. Participants will have the opportunity to work individually with Jasmin on a song of their choice.\u201d<\/p>\n

No Dublin City Soul Festival 2015! Festival got canceled.<\/h2>\n

Bad news reached me during the week: One of my most favourite festivals, the Dublin City Soul Festival will NOT happen this year. It was already very close last year, but the festival got saved in the last minute. This year the lack of funds meant that there was not enough money there to run it this year.<\/p>\n

Chris Maher and his team, who ran the festival for eight great years tried to reach out to all the Soul Festival fans through a crowd-funding campaign, but the response was very disappointing and stayed far below the amount that was required. And despite its clear popularity, the festival never managed to attract sufficient corporate sponsorship.<\/p>\n

Will it be back in 2016? Who knows! I’d say the Soul Festival Team will try their best, but without a miracle regarding funding, we can’t be too optimistic.<\/p>\n

The Pint Bar closing<\/h2>\n

The Pint Bar & Venue at 28 Eden Quay, Dublin 1 is closing down and will only operate for another short while to accommodate some bookings. The Pint ran a good few dance and DJ events, but seemingly that was not enough. No reason was given for the closure.<\/p>\n

The building is from 1768 and while in a somewhat tricky corner for attracting large amount of business, it would be surprising if not some other pub oftened in the premises soon again.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n

Bealtaine Festival + International Literature Festival Dublin in May<\/h2>\n

The Bealtaine Festival, the festival for older people (celebrating “creativity as we age”) is continuing and will run until the end of May. Nearly all events are free and if you are in the target age group of approx. above 55, then you should check the events out at http:\/\/www.bealtaine.com\/bealtaine-2015\/programme\/listing\/Dublin<\/a> Dublin City is one of the biggest contributors to the Bealtaine Festival through a vast amount of events in Libraries and they have created a useful programme brochure that you can download here<\/a>.<\/p>\n

“Love…Italian Style – Changing Customs and Ideas and Love and Marriage in Italy between 1945 and 1974” is an exhibition curated by Dr Niamh Cullen (University College Dublin) that will uncover the reality behind the stereotype of the “Latin Lover”.<\/p>\n

The exhibition explores how ideas about courtship, love and marriage in Italy were changing in the 1950s and 1960s through the lens of popular magazines. The economic miracle of the late 1950s and 1960s also transformed Italian society, prompting widespread migration to the cities and the growth of a mass consumer society. The role of the family in Italian society, gender roles and relations were also changing, and as they did so, definitions of love and marriage themselves were being transformed.<\/p>\n

Every year in May a 10km fundraising run is organised for members of the legal professions in Ireland. It is called the “Calcutta Run”, a 5km and 10 km run where participants collect money of at least EUR 100 before the day. Last year about 1,100 people took part and since the first Calcutta Run about 17 years ago, more than 3 mio was raised for homeless youths in Dublin and Calcutta.<\/p>\n

You can’t take part in the race, but you can cheer the runners on and after the run there will be a BBQ, bar, live music, DJ and fun activities at the Finish Line Festival in the grounds of the Law Society at Blackhall Place. Because you pay for your burger etc, in previous years people that weren’t running weren’t kicked out but could also join the festivities and positive atmosphere.<\/p>\n

The start and finish of the race is at Blackhall Place and the race then goes to Phoenix Park and back.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

National Drawing Day is taking place this Saturday and under the leadership of the National Gallery over 170 Museums, Galleries, Libraries and Cultural Centres across Ireland are taking part.<\/p>\n

At the National Gallery, Donald Teskey will launch Drawing Day at 11:00 and he will lead a team of artists: Michelle Boyle, Comhghall Casey, Alan Daly, Mollie Douthit, Grainne Dowling, Vera Klute, Fintan Mahon, Cian McLoughlin, Dorothy Smyth and Saoirse Wall, who will tutor and draw in the galleries. It\u2019s the ideal opportunity to try your hand at sketching, and to pick up some valuable hints and tips.<\/p>\n

People from across Ireland will attend drawing workshops at the National Gallery of Ireland, the Hunt Museum, Limerick, Creative Spark, Louth and the LAB and will virtually combine their drawings to make one large art work.<\/p>\n

At the LAB, you will be drawing with the help of artist Gabhann Dunne, currently showing in the First Floor Gallery.<\/p>\n

The Science Gallery exhibition “HOME\\SICK – Post-Domestic Bliss” looks at the Home and asks what “Home” really is and also how it could be improved. The word means something different to everyone, but how will the future of technology and design, communities, families, resources, and nations change the nature of what we define as ‘home’?<\/p>\n

HOME\\SICK is the summer exhibition of the Science Gallery, which usually is the exhibition that is the most accessible and understandable for all ages and that goal was achieved again. It is not the Science Gallery’s best exhibition, but it is still definitely worth a visit.<\/p>\n

An Afternoon with Diana Erskine-Hill<\/h2>\n

A collection of poetry by the late Diana Erskine-Hill will be recited. Her husband, Kenneth Edwards and a group of Diana’s friends will recite. Diana was herself deaf and she regularly recited at meetings with people with a hearing impairment. She lost most of her hearing when she was four years old at a time when young children weren\u2019t given hearing aids. She learned to lip read and eventually was given a hearing aid, life really began for her. She never gave up trying to overcome the difficulties posed by a hearing difficulty and spent much of her time helping others cope.<\/p>\n

Kenneth Edwards, Diana\u2019s husband, has published a collection of her poetry. The poems reflect her struggles with hearing impairment, her sensitivity to others as well as her love of nature, singing, chanting and drumming.<\/p>\n

The message, driven by the advertisers, was clear: a \u2018good wife\u2019 was not just beautifully presented, but also used all the latest \u2018modern\u2019 devices. Her home \u2013 especially the kitchen \u2013 was an extension of her appearance and reputation. \u2018Modern life\u2019 and \u2018modern wife\u2019 became blended into the one ideal.<\/p>\n

Monkeyshine Theatre at the International Literature Festival Dublin<\/h2>\n

Irish Theatre Company Monkeyshine will come to St. Patrick’s Park next weekend for a whole range of free activities and performances as part of the International Literature Festival Dublin (ILFD).<\/p>\n

They are bringing The Vagabond, the company’s wonderful wandering venue, to Dublin, for a day of free story-telling activities in St Patrick\u2019s Park on Saturday 23 May. From this magical space they will be telling tales of Alice in Wonderland, and – working with Mr Leon, a flamboyant Parisian taxi driver – they will help their audience to tell their own stories of taxi rides – real or imaginary. Monkeyshine\u2019s \u201cStory Weavers\u201d events will also invite all listeners to hunt for their own story – in the park foraging for materials, and then back to the tent to weave their own tale from the ingredients they have found.<\/p>\n

World Airlines Volleyball Tournament<\/h2>\n

The Aer Lingus Volleyball Club is celebrating its 30th anniversary this year and to mark this they are organizing a World Airlines Volleyball Tournament on the weekend of 22-24 May 2015.<\/p>\n

17 teams from all around the world will participate. They are coming from Australia, Hong Kong, Dubai, Amsterdam, Cologne, Frankfurt, Hamburg, Paris, Lisbon, London, Nice, Poland, Zurich, Vienna and Dublin.<\/p>\n

The main day of the tournament is on Saturday 23 May, with matches starting at 09:00 and the final is scheduled to start at 17:20. The event is free and everyone is welcome to come and watch volleyball while meeting people from different parts of the world.<\/p>\n

Marriage Equality Referendum – I changed my opinion!<\/strong><\/p>\n

<\/strong>Just a few more days and I’d say both sides are by now happy when the whole process is over. But it ain’t over yet and I am not allowed to vote on it so I will blatantly use this platform to tell you what my opinion is about this whole issue. And it might surprise you to hear that I changed my opinion some months back!<\/p>\n

I grew up in a village in Germany and all people around where I grew up were white, so I never experienced “tolerance” or “equality” in that respect. I had no clue what g ay people are, but there was one thing in my village that I was very aware of. That elephant in the room was RELIGION! There were Catholic people and Protestant people in our village. And there was a catholic choir and a protestant choir and catholic farmers would sell land only to other catholic farmers and the same on the protestant side. There was no discrimination in the form of bad behaviour towards each other, but people had their preferences and lived by them, so the boundaries were clearly defined. Odd you think? And I thought so too!<\/p>\n

The separation NEVER made sense to me despite the fact that my catholic parents also clearly lived by these unwritten rules. My mother separated from a boyfriend because in their opinion there was no chance that they could get married because he was Protestant!! Imagine! And that wasn’t in the stone ages, that was in the early 60s.<\/p>\n

Now where am I going with that? There are a number of aspects to it. First of all, to most of us this religion based separation sounds totally crazy to us nowadays because we have moved on and the second aspect: From early on I realised that arbitrary boundaries don’t make sense. But I also learned why people are soooo much against tolerance and equality: They are afraid!! Afraid that there world would be turned upside down, that they might be told do do something they don’t want to do. That they might have to change.<\/p>\n

Interestingly and importantly though, this referendum does not require anybody to change!! No straight man (or woman) will ever be forced to marry another straight man or woman! So people relax! No need to start panicking when you think about two women or two men loving and caring about each other!<\/p>\n

And in my opinion that is what this referendum is about: Allowing two people who feel strongly for each other to be there for each other in ALL aspects.<\/p>\n

This referendum will NOT change how people might or might not behave in their bedroom (or elsewhere), it will not force anybody to do anything against their will AND it will have no impact on adoptions or surrogacy. So forget that straight away.<\/p>\n

Vote YES and allow these two people to love each other if they want or just care for each other into high age and in all aspects.<\/p>\n

In the intro I said that I changed my opinion, so what is that all about?<\/p>\n

I was never against Marriage Equality, but I have to admit that I don’t like the term “marriage” for a civil union of two people and initially I was of the opinion that the Civil Partnership was already there, so why do we need a Marriage Equality Referendum?! But then I found here<\/a> that currently there are 160 differences between the rights of two people who are married vs the rights of two people in a civil partnership. That was the decider. Either you have full rights or you don’t.<\/p>\n

I still would prefer if we changed some significant aspects of the marriage procedures, but that’s not really relevant for this referendum: All marriages should take place in a registry office and then afterwards people can opt to get married in a church if they want. The church should not be allowed to stand in for the state, instead the two procedures should bee totally separated. But as I said, that is not really relevant in this referendum. Mind you, I hope the catholic church will refuse to do the civil marriage part after the referendum!<\/p>\n

So, if I was allowed to vote, I would vote YES! If you are allowed to vote, please vote for me!!!<\/p>\n
