The Dublin Event Guide (for Free Events) keeps growing and we are now 56,000 people on Facebook and more than 10,000 use the Smartphone App at http:\/\/m.dublineventguide.com<\/a> Great numbers in the approach to the 8th birthday of the Dublin Event Guide! :-)<\/p>\n

And the other good thing is that the number of free events is remaining steady, despite serious challenges for some organisations and organisers who have lost a LOT of funding and subsidies. Not a single event that is listed in this weekly online magazine is really free. Every event costs something, at least some time which the organisers could use for something else if they wanted to. So, please show your appreciation for the great work people in Dublin do. Go to the events and tell them if you enjoyed their events. And if you get a chance, it would also be great if you could tell them that you heard about it in the “Dublin Event Guide (for Free Events)”, so that they know how to reach you next time! :-)<\/p>\n

Dublin 2020 – Europen Capital of Culture Application<\/h2>\n

In 2020, a city in Ireland and a city in Croatia will both (!) be the European Capital of Culture. With two cities being THE capital and with the cities not having to be a capital in the first place, you can see that the title is not as significant as it should\/could be…or has been in the past.<\/p>\n

Nevertheless, Dublin City Council has decided that Dublin should apply to be the chosen Irish city, which makes a lot of sense. But there will be competition from other Irish Cities. Dublin was European Capital of Culture in 1991 and Cork had the role in 2005 and it seems that no European city got the title twice yet, so the odds are against Dublin.<\/p>\n

Because being the chosen European Capital of Culture will mean that there will be additional events (“with a European dimension”) taking place during the year, you won’t be surprised to hear that the Dublin Event Guide (for Free Events) is firmly supporting Dublin’s application.<\/p>\n

Bealtaine Festival in May<\/h2>\n

The Bealtaine Festival celebrates “creativity as we age”, it is organise by Age & Opportunity and is a great yearly festival that comes with a large amount of events and many of them are free.<\/p>\n

Unfortunately, though something major went wrong this year and the printed Bealtaine Festival Programme contains absolutely NO information about admission charges. The online programme at http:\/\/www.bealtaine.com\/bealtaine-2015\/programme\/listing\/Dublin<\/a> does list the admission charges (hidden in the text) for some events and has no information for many other events. That’s a pity. It should have been clearer. The 11 (web) pages of Dublin Programme are also not searchable for event type or date, so you will have a job and a half planning your May if the Bealtaine Festival is for you. Dublin City is one of the biggest contributors to the Bealtaine Festival through a vast amount of events in Libraries and they have created a useful programme brochure that you can download here<\/a>.<\/p>\n

The celebration of creativity extends to events around arts, music, dance and literature and there are talks, workshops, performances etc but in times of inclusivity and fear of discrimination and exclusion, the festival finds it difficult to define who it is for. It was originally for old people, then a suggested starting age of 55 was mentioned and now all indications about the targe group have been removed. Since the “creativity as we age” description applies to all of us because we all age and because we tend to think about ourselves as “young” well into mature ages it would help to have somem ore guidance. Without that guidance, I would suggest to roughly use a 55-65 years mark as a starting point and there is no upper limit.<\/p>\n

THACK DUBLIN – Sat 09 May
\nDevelopers in Dublin are getting a chance to participate in an open travel hackathon over the weekend. The latest stop on the Tnooz THack roadshow will take place at the NDRC in Dublin. THack @ Dublin is open to individual developers and teams of up to 5 members who will compete on-site for at least EUR 7000 in cash and other prizes. The event brings together up to 100 developers as well as leading travel and travel tech companies. This promises to be a creative competition that seeks solutions to travel challenges. BREWCON 2015 – Sat 09 May
\nBrewCon 2015, Ireland\u2019s first conference aimed solely at all levels of brewers & brewing, is being held on Saturday 09 May in Dublin, at the historic Smock Alley Theatre.
\nEducation in brewing is core to the National Homebrew Club, and that was the impetus behind the launch of BrewCon 2015. Over 150 attendees are expected to pack into the conference centre in Smock Alley Theatre. Whilst there they will hear about the four cornerstones of brewing (grain, hops, yeast & water) from highly respected brewing industry speakers.
\nKeynote speaker will be Chris White, President and CEO of White Labs Inc. and co-author of “Yeast: The Practical Guide To Beer Fermentation”. “Love…Italian Style – Changing Customs and Ideas and Love and Marriage in Italy between 1945 and 1974” is an exhibition curated by Dr Niamh Cullen (University College Dublin) that will uncover the reality behind the stereotype of the “Latin Lover”.<\/p>\n

The exhibition explores how ideas about courtship, love and marriage in Italy were changing in the 1950s and 1960s through the lens of popular magazines. The economic miracle of the late 1950s and 1960s also transformed Italian society, prompting widespread migration to the cities and the growth of a mass consumer society. The role of the family in Italian society, gender roles and relations were also changing, and as they did so, definitions of love and marriage themselves were being transformed.<\/p>\n

People\u2019s Art Dublin is a voluntary, part time, non profit making group, brought together by Dublin City Council to promote the visual arts to the public of Dublin. HOME\\SICK is the summer exhibition of the Science Gallery, which usually is the exhibition that is the most accessible and understandable for all ages and that goal was achieved again. It is not the Science Gallery’s best exhibition, but it is still definitely worth a visit.<\/p>\n

Canalphonics is a free Music and Culture Festival that is sponsored and supported by Dublin City Council’s South East Area Office in partnership with Dave Judge of Abner Brown\u2019s Barbershop. It will take place on Friday 08 and Saturday 09 May in Portobello and Rathmines.<\/p>\n

On Saturday from 13:00-21:30, bands will play on the Making Waves Stage on a barge at Portobello Harbour, followed by a wide range of gigs and club nights in 22 venues in the area.<\/p>\n

On Saturday barges participating in the Inland Waterways Association of Ireland\u2019s Dublin Rally will arrive and there will be a boutique market at Portobello Harbour from 11:00-21:30 with barge trips and family fun activities.
\nA second stage at Rathmines Plaza (14:00-17:00) will feature Eleanor Shanley, Mike Hanrahan, Paul Kelly, Daoir\u00ed Farrell, The Dorians and the Ceolt\u00f3ir Traditional Group BCFE. Childrens’ activities are taking place at St Marys College in Rathmines and Mart (the old Rathmines fire station) will feature a 20 piece jazz swing band at 19:00 on Saturday.<\/p>\n

Over the two days there will be art\/craft exhibitions, markets, pop up acoustic sets and guerrilla spoken word performances in Rathmines and Portobello and caf\u00e9s and eateries offer some discounts.<\/p>\n

The line-up for the Making Waves Stage on Saturday is Blue Moon Barbershop Quartet, Suzanne Savage, Johnny Stewart, <\/span>Mongoose, Kicking Bird<\/span>, Stomptown Brass<\/span>, Sin\u00e9ad White<\/span> and finally The Hot Sprockets<\/span>.<\/p>\n

Specific start and end times are not defined, but exhibition space has to be occupied by 11:00, so 11:00 is the latest start time. The event runs from Friday until Sunday, but Sat+Sun will most likely be the main days.<\/p>\n

People\u2019s Art Dublin is a voluntary, part time, non profit making group, brought together by Dublin City Council to promote the visual arts to the public of Dublin. To mark the 70th Anniversary of the Liberation of the Concentration Camps, the European Parliaments office is screening a number of films and on Tuesday, the film is “The Boxer and Death”, which is screened in cooperation with the Embassy of Slovakia.<\/p>\n

The Boxer and Death is a 1962 Slovak film directed by Peter Solan, the film is based on the life of Polish boxer Tadeusz \u201cTeddy\u201d Pietrzykowski. – In a Nazi concentration camp, an escapee awaiting execution is spared when the commandant, a former prize-fighter, discovers the prisoner has amateur boxing ability and makes him his exercise partner. A story of human degradation, where the only chance of survival is to accept the rules of an unequal game.<\/p>\n

On 22 May a big an important referendum will take place in Ireland and virtually everyone knows about it. Without having to think, you will most likely know that this is the Marriage Equality referendum. But do you know that on the same day there will also be a second referendum that you can vote on?<\/p>\n

And what is the important question in this second referendum? – Voters will be asked to decide if in future the President of Ireland has to be older than 35 as it is at the moment or if the age limit will be lowered to 21. The fact that you hardly hear anything about it and that there is not single poster reminding you of that second referendum tells you how relevant the question is. But let’s have a quick look at it:<\/p>\n

Then you will have to find at least 20 members of the Oireachtas (Dail and Seanad) or at least four county or city councils to come together to nominate you. And after you are nominated, the opposition and the press will pick on you and will try to convince the public why you are unsuitable. And if you survive all that, then you will have to be voted by the majority of Irish citizens before you will put your foot in Aras an Uachterain.<\/p>\n

Today you have to be 35 years of age before you can be nominated and many would say that a leader of a state should have a certain maturity and gravitas, which that age limit tries to ensure.<\/p>\n

But oddly some seem to think that this age limit is a major issue, a stumbling block that stops Ireland from having the most suitable candidate and they want to lower the age to 21.<\/p>\n

I am not aware that the age limit was ever an issue. Usually the candidates tend to be well above 35 years of age. and could you imagine a 21 year old to succeed in convincing the majority of voters in Ireland that he\/she is the right person to be the president for the next 7 years?<\/p>\n

So this limit is really a non-issue and it is surprising that there is a referendum about it. But because nomination and voting reality will build much bigger hurdles than the constitution does, I can see why removing the age limit won’t change anything. So it doesn’t matter at all what way you vote, it will not change a thing.<\/p>\n

You wonder why there will be that referendum if it won’t achieve anything? It is the famous Constitutional Convention<\/a> that was tasked with considering a reduction of the term of office for the president from 7 to 5 years that as the best and only result in this area came up with a completely different aspect, a total non issue: Their recommendation was that the term of office should not be changed but the age limit should be reduced from 35 to 21. So the Constitutional Convention is the reason for this (unnecessary!?) referendum.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n
