Don’t you just love bank holiday weekends? Getting an extra day off is a special treat and should be cherished. The only downside is that the bank holiday is often a less event-ful day than other days because even event organisers like a day off. But there are plenty of other things to do and there are also always the parks of Dublin available even if some museums are closed. Speaking of museums: The National Gallery never (or hardly ever) sleeps, so even on bank holidays it is open (10:00-17:30) and if you haven’t been there for a while or maybe even have never seen it, this Monday is the day on which you and the National Gallery could have a date! ;-) Enjoy!<\/p>\n

Bank Holiday weekends come with their own “event dynamic” and often there are less events than in normal weeks. But this weekend we have the Bray Jazz Festival and the Phizzfest in Phibsborough, and also a Mexican Cinco de Mayo Festival on Monday, so that’s not bad! The new Science Gallery Exhibition has also be launched and next Friday Canalphonics will start.<\/p>\n

The weather is allegedly improving over the next few days with the worst on Saturday, a little better on Sunday and cloudy but dry on Monday. Not really the bank holiday weekend you would wish for, but I think we will put up with it and find something to keep ourselves busy! Poolbeg Chimneys are staying!!<\/h2>\n
\n

Good news for an iconic Dublin landmark emerged on Wednesday: The Poolbeg Chimneys are staying! They are the two chimneys on Poolbeg peinsula at the entrance to Dublin Port that everybody knows.<\/p>\n

The chimneys are not used anymore since in 2010 the ESB power plant there was decomissioned and the ESB would have liked to knock the chimneys down because they will cost a good bit of money over the years to maintain. Concrete chimneys tend to get dirty all the time and the concrete starts to crumble after a while, so having to maintain them is a bit of a pain for the ESB, but the outcry was so huge when they indicated that they would prefer to knock them down, that it is a lot better for ESB’s reputation to keep them where they are.<\/p>\n

The two chimneys are not the same age and not the same size. One was built in 1969 and the other in 1977 and one is a little wider than the other. They are 207 metres high and are the 6th tallest structure in Ireland. Now a lid will be put on them to stop rain to get inside and more maintenance work might be required in the future.<\/p>\n

Camino Real Information Centre in Dublin<\/h2>\n

The Camino Real or Camino de Santiago is as popular as never before with a massive amount of people walking parts of it every year. Some do it for religious reasons, others for spiritual reasons and others again see it as a great holiday activity.<\/p>\n

Ireland has for quite some time an Irish Society of the Friends of St James which organised information events and now a dedicated Information Office has been added. It is located in St. James Church on James Street and has its own entrance. The Information Centre is open on Thursdays, Fridays and Saturdays from 10:30-15:30.<\/p>\n

Bealtaine Festival in May<\/h2>\n
\n

The Bealtaine Festival celebrates “creativity as we age”, it is organise by Age & Opportunity and is a great yearly festival that comes with a large amount of events and many of them are free.<\/p>\n

Unfortunately, though something major went wrong this year and the printed Bealtaine Festival Programme contains absolutely NO information about admission charges. The online programme at http:\/\/www.bealtaine.com\/bealtaine-2015\/programme\/listing\/Dublin<\/a> does list the admission charges (hidden in the text) for some events and has no information for many other events. That’s a pity. It should have been clearer. The 11 (web) pages of Dublin Programme are also not searchable for event type or date, so you will have a job and a half planning your May if the Bealtaine Festival is for you. Dublin City is one of the biggest contributors to the Bealtaine Festival through a vast amount of events in Libraries and they have created a useful programme brochure that you can download here<\/a>.<\/p>\n

The celebration of creativity extends to events around arts, music, dance and literature and there are talks, workshops, performances etc but in times of inclusivity and fear of discrimination and exclusion, the festival finds it difficult to define who it is for. It was originally for old people, then a suggested starting age of 55 was mentioned and now all indications about the targe group have been removed. Since the “creativity as we age” description applies to all of us because we all age and because we tend to think about ourselves as “young” well into mature ages it would help to have somem ore guidance. Without that guidance, I would suggest to roughly use a 55-65 years mark as a starting point and there is no upper limit.<\/p>\n

Her love of fairytales and folklore from all over the world comes across in her work and she likes to explore their underlying themes – along with how they can connect with our own experiences.<\/p>\n

Jo has been drawing, painting and illustrating all her life. Whilst living in Japan and Poland, in particular, she was very impressed by the art work produced by the people there. It continues to influence her work to this day.<\/p>\n

The Science Gallery exhibition “HOME\\SICK – Post-Domestic Bliss” looks at the Home and asks what “Home” really is and also how it could be improved. HOME\\SICK is the summer exhibition of the Science Gallery, which usually is the exhibition that is the most accessible and understandable for all ages and that goal was achieved again. It is not the Science Gallery’s best exhibition, but it is still definitely worth a visit.<\/p>\n

The Science Gallery exhibition “HOME\\SICK – Post-Domestic Bliss” looks at the Home and asks what “Home” really is and also how it could be improved. HOME\\SICK is the summer exhibition of the Science Gallery, which usually is the exhibition that is the most accessible and understandable for all ages and that goal was achieved again. It is not the Science Gallery’s best exhibition, but it is still definitely worth a visit.<\/p>\n

Wings for Life – Worldwide Charity Run<\/h2>\n

The Wings for Life World Run is a Charity Run that takes place at 35 location at the same time and it is a race with a big difference: There is no finish line! The race will start at Newtownsmith Green and goes towards Dalkey, Bray and then onwards towards Wicklow. The runners start at 12:00 and then 30 minutes later the Chaser Car will start and once the chaser car catches you, you are out, until the last person is reached. The rules for the Chaser Car are unfortunately not revealed, so it is unclear how long the race will go.<\/p>\n

As you can imagine, for a charity race the entrance fee is the charity contribution and therefore the race is not free, but watching and cheering on the participants is! Different to most other charity races, the organisers of the Wings of Life run promise that 100% of the entrance fee will go to the charity and all the money will be used to find a cure for spinal cord injury.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

On the 400th anniversary of his birth, Mexico and Ireland are paying homage to a hero of both nations: William Lamport or Guillen de Lampart.<\/p>\n

His memory is revered along with other National Heroes in the Column of Independence, (“El Angel”) in Mexico City. The historic character is less well known than the fictional character that inspired: “El Zorro”, despite the fact that the hectic life and tragic end of the Lamport are more fascinating than the adventures of El Zorro.<\/p>\n

Born in Wexford in 1615, Lamport, who was catholic and fascinated by poetry, astronomy and mathematics, first conspired to free Ireland from British oppression and later authored Mexico’s first proclamation of independence.<\/p>\n

He failed on both counts and after an unjust and prolonged trial, he was sentenced to death and buried at the stake by the Tribunal of the Holy Office, but centuries later the seed of freedom and justice that he planted in both nations would see fruition.<\/p>\n

His life and work will be discussed by Mercedes de Vega Armijo, Andrea Mart\u00ednez Baracs, Fabio Troncarelli, Thomas O\u00b4Connor and Carmen Sanjuli\u00e1n.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

The Warrenmount Community Education & Development Centre is inviting to four Cultural Taks over the next four Fridays. The first one is on 08 May and looks at “Broadway Musicals” from the 1940s and 50s.<\/p>\n

In his lectures on 08+15 May, John Allen will explore the history of this uniquely American theatrical phenomenon as it developed during the 1940s and 1950s. John\u2019s lectures will be illustrated by many recorded excerpts from the shows featured.<\/p>\n

The first two Music Talks are follwoed by Literature Talks:<\/p>\n

Susan Knight will give a lecture on “Dublin in Poetry and Prose” on 22 May and on “Young Skins: the latest generation of Irish writers” on 29 May.<\/p>\n

In connection with the Canalphonics Festival a walking tour of Cathal Brugha Barracks in Rathmines takes place at 16:00 on Fri 08 May and at 12:00 on Sat 09 May. The tour will vist the guardroom, now visitor centre, which houses an exhibition of military artefacts including personal items that belonged to General Michael Collins. It also includes the guardroom exercise yard in which Francis Sheehy Skeffington, Thomas Dickson and Patrick McIntyre were executed by the British forces without trial on 26 April 1916.<\/p>\n

Admission is free. No information is available if the event has to be booked and where the meeting point is. Maybe the gates of the Barracks?<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

Canalphonic Music & Culture Festival<\/h2>\n

Canalphonics is a free Music and Culture Festival that is sponsored and supported by Dublin City Council’s South East Area Office in partnership with Dave Judge of Abner Brown\u2019s Barbershop. It will take place on Friday 08 and Saturday 09 May in Portobello and Rathmines.<\/p>\n

On Friday from 17:00-21:30 and on Saturday from 13:00-21:30, bands will play on the Making Waves Stage on a barge at Portobello Harbour, followed by a wide range of gigs and club nights in 22 venues in the area.<\/p>\n

On Saturday barges participating in the Inland Waterways Association of Ireland\u2019s Dublin Rally will arrive and there will be a boutique market at Portobello Harbour from 11:00-21:30 with barge trips and family fun activities.
\nA second stage at Rathmines Plaza (14:00-17:00) will feature Eleanor Shanley, Mike Hanrahan, Paul Kelly, Daoir\u00ed Farrell, The Dorians and the Ceolt\u00f3ir Traditional Group BCFE. Childrens’ activities are taking place at St Marys College in Rathmines and Mart (the old Rathmines fire station) will feature a 20 piece jazz swing band at 19:00 on Saturday.<\/p>\n

Over the two days there will be art\/craft exhibitions, markets, pop up acoustic sets and guerrilla spoken word performances in Rathmines and Portobello and caf\u00e9s and eateries offer some discounts.<\/p>\n

The line-up for the Making Waves Stage on Saturday is Blue Moon Barbershop Quartet, Suzanne Savage, Johnny Stewart, <\/span>Mongoose, Kicking Bird<\/span>, Stomptown Brass<\/span>, Sin\u00e9ad White<\/span> and finally The Hot Sprockets<\/span>. For Friday and for the the other venues I only found a very general line-up of all contributing acts here<\/a>. Hopefully we will find out more details before Friday!<\/p>\n

Marriage Equality: United we are strong? …or maybe not!
\n<\/strong><\/p>\n

When I drove through Dublin during the week, I was wondering why some of the lamp posts had five different Marriage Equality Referendum posters on them. There was one from Fine Gael, Fine Fail, Labour, Sinn Fein all asking for a YES vote and then there was one poster asking for a NO vote from an unidentifiable (print too small) organisation. The Yes Equality posters were only added a few days later.<\/p>\n

Going through all the events in Dublin I came across quite a number of fundraising events for the Yes Equality campaign, but the four parties that also ask for a YES vote didn’t ask for money.<\/p>\n

These two things together made me wonder why the Yes side doesn’t work together!? I would expect (and hope) that the Yes side will achieve a landslide victory in this referendum and considering the extremely rare scenario that ALL relevant political parties and a huge proportion of the non-politically organised population are of the same opinion we really can expect that outcome, but would it not have been EVEN stronger if the YES side had come together, had left their differences aside and would have presented a block of support for the referendum?<\/p>\n

In a football team it helps if the 11 players work together while trying to achieve a win. Imagine if all 11 tried to play their own game without helping and co-operating with their team members!? The match could still be won, but it would be a lot riskier than if they all helped each other.<\/p>\n

Sure, I can think of a number of reasons why all players in this competition did want to get (and claim) the goal for themselves, but is the common goal of winning the match not much bigger and more important than getting individual goals?<\/p>\n
