Congratulations! :-) Having made the trip, I holidayed for the first time in many years again in the West of Ireland. The weather was slightly mixed, but I have to say, I had one of the best weekends in years. Three great days, amazing how the right “ingredients” can make you feel good and you don’t even have to travel to the other side of the world for that. :-)

This week a number of festivals take place in Dublin, but the free events are not as plentiful as I would like. The G ay Film Festival, Cinemagic (a youth film festival) and the Dublin Dance Festival are ongoing or starting. And Bealtaine, the art festival for the slightly older generation is continuing as well. Bealtaine, however, has lots of free events and if you are in the age category around or above 55, you should definitely check http://bealtaine.com/

For the uplifting slot of this week’s Dublin Event Guide (for Free Events) I found a short film! Have a look at it if you can, I think it is worth it: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Cbk980jV7Ao and after watching it, make someone else smile by making an unexpected appreciative/positive remark about that other person. And if it feels good, to make someone else smile, then don’t stop with ONE person. ;-) It is fun! And you might find out that our friends get the Event Guide too because maybe they surprise YOU with a nice message that outs a smile on your face.

[ad]
——-
Please help spreading the word about this newsletter! Just print this PDF file http://www.broighter.com/EventGuide_NewSubscribers.pdf and hang it up in work or gym or university or wherever else you think it might find people that would be interested in knowing about free events! If you have a scissors to cut the contact labels at the bottom, it is a bonus! Spread the word and let people know about the Dublin Event Guide (for Free Events) I will show my appreciation for your help by producing an as comprehensive as possible Dublin Event Guide for Free Events every week. ;-) Thanks!
—–
This Event Guide is sponsored by Esme E, Cliodhna D, Brian L, Padraig S, Kathie S, Orla niF, Jef B, Susanna N, Kate C, Nicola J, Claus Sch, Gordon S, Jeanne M, Fiona O’C, Marta M, Angela C, Isabelle F, Saundra S, Meisoon N, Ruth F, Valerie McN, Estelle O, Aoife M, Mairin M, Fionán O’L, Maeve L, Blaithin O’D, Ciara D, Mike G, Andrej G, Deirdre R, Vanessa O’L, Chris McK, Frank B, Dolores P, Cornelia K, Cathy A, Orla C, Kevin McC, Steph G, Wanda J, Siv M-J, Niamh niS, Gwen H and www.stickyfingerstravel.com (The travel guide for parents travelling with their children.), www.target2020.com (…a training company that focuses on personal and career development.), www.thepaulkanegallery.com (A great Art Gallery, located at 6 Merrion Square, which supports contemporary Irish artists.) and www.a1computers.ie in Dun Laoghaire/Cabinteely (…who repair computers, printers and sort out Internet problems fast and who sell computers, laptops and low priced printer cartridges). Going to free events saves you a LOT of money AND is good fun. True? ;-) But if you didn’t know about these free events you couldn’t go. True as well? In that case the question is what the value is of finding out about all the events. Do you agree that 1 Euro per month (which is just 25 cent per newsletter) is a very modest amount? It would be great if I could count on your 12 Euro per year!! Feel free to give more if you can, but please do seriously consider the 12 Euro.
To contribute you can transfer your donation directly to “Joerg Steegmueller, AIB, SortCode 93-36-78, AccountNo 03556043” or go donate using PayPal or your credit card by going “http ://tinyurl . com/68dmlq ” and just remove the three Spaces in the web address (I have to write it like this, otherwise Spam Checkers complain about the tinyurl address.)
Alternatively you can send a mail to me (dublineventguide@gmail.com) and we can arrange a different route for your donation. This Event Guide is a hobby and NOT a commercial enterprise, so I do need donations! But I spend more than 25 hours per week (for some people that is a half-day job!) on writing and researching it.

All events listed in this Event Guide are free of any admission charges or at least appear to be free unless otherwise stated. I try to find confirmation in all cases and do my best to double-check the information. However errors can happen and therefore no guarantee for correctness can be given.

______________________________
______Joerg’s Picks______________

Since this newsletter is getting longer and longer with all the free events available, this section is meant to provide some help in picking and choosing the events I will or would go to. This is not the “best of…” list and if an event is not listed here, it by no means implies that the event is not interesting. Instead my “picks” are just based on my personal preferences, so if it helps you I am glad, but feel free to ignore this section completely! :-) All events mentioned here are described in detail further down.

–Advertisement————————————
NEW ADVERTISEMENT OPPORTUNITIES IN EVENT GUIDE
If you want to let the Dublin Event Guide Community know about your products or services, you can do that now on a regular and repeated basis by advertising in the Event Guide. Advertisement can be by text – like this note – or with a picture/graphics. The cost for advertisement are definitely affordable and you donate to the production of the Event Guide at the same time.
Contact me via dublineventguide@gmail.com to find out more.
——————————————————–

Well, this week even I find it difficult to identify some MUST-GO events. Not that there are no interesting events on, but there is nothing that tempts me so much that I DEFINITELY want to go, apart from Centre Stage 2009 on Sunday maybe. Maybe I will just wait and see how the weather is going and if it is good then I might stroll around the City Centre a bit or leave Dublin for another weekend? I know the coming weekends will be busier, so maybe that is the calm before the storm? :-P During the week I would love to go to some TrinityWeek lectures (see Monday), but unfortunately they are during working hours. Next Thursday I will try to go to the EYP event. So, this week I won’t give you any strong recommendations, but I hope you will find some things to do. :-)

______________________________
______Competition______________

CREATIVE WRITING WORKSHOPS – IRISH WRITERS’ CENTRE
The Irish Writer’s Centre made two free Creative Writing courses available for two readers of this Event Guide to win. This is a GREAT prize and many many of you entered the competition. I was glad that I didn’t have to choose, but only had to do a random draw, because I would have liked to give a free course to everyone who entered. :-) One interesting thing I noticed was that quite a number of the people who went to the trouble to explain a little about why they are keen to win the price (Thanks for that!!) mentioned financial constraints as the main reason for not doing this course that they wanted to do for a long time. I know that no two people are in the same situation, and for some the financial constraints are so severe, that there is just NO option of spending money on a course, but if you are in the “inbetween” state and you feel passionate about moving forward, then try everything to get the money together. Assess your finances, identify areas where you can save and then invest in your passion! It is not too late yet for this season term! Have a look at the list of courses at www.writerscentre.ie And to book a place on a course please contact the Irish Writers’ Centre as soon as possible on 01 872 1302 or at courses@writerscentre.ie.
And now…drum rolllllll…..the announcement of the winners: The winners of the two Creative Writing Courses are Deirdre Moran and John Higgins!! Congratulations!

All events in this Competition Section are non-free events, but the organisers are making free tickets available for you to win. I usually get lots of competition entries and unfortunately not everybody can win, so even if you are not the winner, please consider going to an event to support the organisers. :-) If you don’t win, and will go to the event, please help showing the organisers that promoting their event in the Dublin Event Guide is beneficial and mention to them that you heard about the event through “Joerg’s Dublin Event Guide (for Free Events)”. Thanks!

______________________________
______Dublin News______________

PLASTIC BAG CHARGE AT DUBLIN AIRPORT
It was good while it lasted, but now Dublin Airport has stopped giving out resealable plastic bags for free to carry your liquids in your hand luggage on board. Nearly all airports are charging between 50 cent and 1 Euro for two of these bags for quite some time already and now Dublin Airport has introduced this as well (1 Euro for two bags). Just be prepared when you fly out the next time! You can bring your own bags that you bought in a supermarket, but remember they have to be resealable and must not be larger than 20cm x 20cm. I know that both conditions do not make the slightest bit of sense, but breaking the rules in this scenario will mean risking the loss of expensive perfumes, crèmes, lip-sticks or similar.
http://www.rte.ie/news/2009/0506/terror.html

RECESSION FOCUSES THE MIND
Have you heard about the Video/DVD Rental company that managed to accumulate losses of EUR 15 million?? I am still amazed about the HOW! The company went into examiner ship and a lot of suppliers lost huge amounts of money because onyla tiny percentage of the outstanding debt was paid back, but at least a solution was found to save 172 jobs: http://www.rte.ie/business/2009/0428/chartbusters.html
Another company, Xtravision, is trying to capture the customers with a different approach: For the month of May all DVDs are 1 Euro per night. Now, don’t ask me how EVER a charge of 8 Euro was justified! Oh, it was for two nights and for two films, I know, but why would I want a film for TWO nights? I never understood the thinking behind it and consequently did not rent any films. With 1 Euro per film per night, the story is different! If I had the time to watch a film, I would definitely use that offer (however, I would probably stay away again if the prices go up after May). www.xtravision.ie

GREEN SPHERES TICKETS – WATERFORD
Unfortunately this is not for Dublin, but maybe you fancy a trip down South? No government can’t turn the ride around! They can balance the books – or at least try to, but the solution will not be found by the government. In my opinion only courageous individuals will be able to trigger the turn around. If you are one of the courageous people and have recently started a company – out of need or because you saw this great opportunity -, I am happy to help you! If you want, I will let the 3900+ readers of the Event Guide know about your new business and hopefully that will help you a bit. Let me know what you do and over the coming months I will regularly introduce a new company/project/venture/idea.
(Please note that this offer is for start-ups in relatively early stages, not for established companies/enterprises. If you are established and you want to reach the readers of this Dublin Event Guide (for Free Events) I will be happy to discuss the (very inexpensive) advertisement options with you. :-) )

If you want to promote your start-up/young company here for free, let me know (dublineventguide@gmail.com).

DUBLIN IN SPANISH
A friend and long term Dublin Event Guide Community Member told me about the company that he has started recently. www.dublinenespanol.com is made for Spanish speaking tourists who want to find out more about Dublin, but have limited English. The Temple Bar Cultural Trust and Phantom 105.2 work with the Dance Festival on providing a free Headphone Disco on Meeting House Square in Temple Bar on Fri 08 May from 19:00-23:00. Gates Open at 18:30 and the event is free but ticketed. Tickets can be
collected from Dublin Dance Festival Box Office at Temple Bar Cultural Information Centre and hopefully the organisers are so flexible to let people without tickets in, if there is still room on Meeting House Square. Since this is the Opening Night for a Dance Festival, it is, however possible, that the event will be very very popular and will be booked out. I would suggest you try it and if you get in all is well, if not , then enjoy one of the many (free) music venues in Temple Bar. :-) Make sure that you have some radio and headphones, if you want to enjoy the event, because the music will not come through speakers but through the radio (Phantom 105.2)
The evening starts with Teaser classes & Guerilla performances from 19:00-20:30 and then moves to the Headphone Disco from 21:00-23:00. http://www.dublindancefestival.ie/2009/02/27/bumper-2-bumper/

REGULAR EVENTS – FRIDAY
* James Sheeran (Acoustic/Rock/Trad) is playing from 18:00 in Peadar Kearney’s in 64 Dame Street, Dublin 2. The head of your company might be good, but nobody knows because he doesn’t come across as a capable boss at all. His leadership skills are either not there or VERY well hidden. Now your company realises that they need to employ a new Sales Manager. And the selection process is underway. Who would YOU recommend? A person who has a strong vision and has leadership skills and is someone people feel motivated by? Or someone who has never (yet?) shown any vision or leadership, but only delivered a backward perspective full of negativity and full of bad bad depressive views?
I am not sure about your preference, but I would search until I found the visionary, the leader, the motivator!
Not so one of the opposition parties! Fine Gael decided for the OTHER candidate. Odd, isn’t it? The candidate is Mr. Doom & Gloom George Lee, who has brought the most negative and pessimistic views to your dinner table in evening news and other RTE programmes. I find it odd that the man that is the messenger of the most depressing news and who happily made them sound worse and worse is now suddenly meant to provide vision and leadership so that people will vote for him.
Here is the announcement http://www.rte.ie/news/2009/0505/finegael.html and if you don’t know the man, enjoy is optimism here http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GpV4eIdja6w

—————–
Issue 99 of the Event Guide is done!
