The Dublin Event Guide train is moving along nicely with continuous increases in subscribers and Facebook Likes and next week I will tell you about another company that will provide some support. The biggest challenge is still the one of the late sending time of the weekly e-mail magazine. I absolutely have to improve on that because I know that at the current late time the Dublin Event Guide (for Free Events) is not as useful to you as it should and would be if it arrived earlier with you. I am working on some options, but am always open for suggestions.<\/p>\n

Just because some people don’t seem to be too sure what the Dublin Event Guide really is, I want to explain it to you again: The Dublin Event Guide (for Free Events) is NOT a company and I don’t make any money from it. I am not the CEO or Managing Director of it, I am just the guy who came up with the idea and then made it happen. I don’t earn a cent from it and the fact that there are 23,000 subscribers and more than 55,000 Facebook Likes is purely down to the usefulness of the service in your eyes. I don’t advertise it, instead you are (hopefully) spreading the word by telling your friends. Some people seem to think that this is a company and that I am employed or paid by the Dublin Event Guide, this is not the case. The reason why I ask for money is not for me, but to cover the monthly cost of sending it and it does NOT include any cost of compiling\/editing it. The compiling and editing is all done for free by me.<\/p>\n

Because of that, your help is needed every week for two other aspects: Your generous donations help paying the bills for sending the Dublin Event Guide every week and without you spreading the word we would have never reached 23,000 subscribers and 55,000 Facebook Likes. But it is just the start!! The goal is 50,000 subscribers and 100,000 Facebook Likes! Big goals, I know, but I believe we can achieve it! Imagine if everyone just got ONE additional person to subscribe to the Dublin Event Guide (for Free Events). That would be an immediate increase by a few thousand subscribers. Would be super!!!! This section is intended to provide some help in picking and choosing from the huge number of events by sharing with you what I will\/might or would do. This is not a “best of…” list and if an event is not listed here, it by no means implies that the event is not interesting. Instead my “picks” are just based on my personal preferences. There are a good few interesting events taking place this weekend. The first to mention is the Dublin Bay Prawn Festival in Howth on Saturday and Sunday. The event combined with the beauty of Howth on a good day and with the possibilities for walks there are definitely worth a visit.<\/p>\n

On Saturday there is a Gallipoli re-enactment at the Phoenix Park Visitor Centre, which sounds interesting if you are interested in History.<\/p>\n

On Sunday the Pets in the City event on Smithfield Plaza and the Dublin Flea Market, which always is a good place to go to when it is on, are my recommendations.<\/p>\n

If you like shopping, have a look at the “Shop for Good” initiative in Dundrum Town Centre this weekend. You pay EUR 1 to Suicide charity Console and in return you get a discount (typically 10-20%) from a Dundrum Town Centre Shop. Nearly all shops are participating so you should by many EUR 1 discount vouchers and get lots of discounts because that help the charity most. ;-)<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

Snow warning for Dublin!?<\/h2>\n

Yes, you have read right. Met Eireann has warned that temperatures will drop so much this weekend that there is a risk of snow. Temperatures are meant to go down to -4 as the lowest value and that is – at the end of April – certainly a throwback. Keep the plants in your garden covered up and look a last time at the gorgeous looking cherry blossom trees, because after this weekend with rain and frost, they will be gone.<\/p>\n

Imaginarium to close Dublin shops<\/h2>\n

If you are a parent and have children in the age group when educational toys are the most suitable present then check this: Educational toy shop chain Imaginarium will close both of their remaining shops in Dublin at the end of June (Swords shop) and at the end of July (Dundrum shop), probably because the business was not going well enough for them here.<\/p>\n

Because there are not many alternatives, you might want to stock up on some of the toys you will need in the near\/medium term future for your child.<\/p>\n

Imaginarium has approx. 400 shops in 25 countries and they had two more in Ireland (Blanchardstown and Dun Laoghaire), but these two closed a while ago.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<\/tbody>\n<\/table>\n\n\n\n

DUBLIN GREEK FILM FESTIVAL PRESENTS: ANNA
\nFor one weekend The Dublin Greek Film Festival have curated a ambitious programme which will consist of features, shorts films and documentaries. But it’s not all about moving pictures they also want to get you to move your body through special events like a Greek dance workshop! The events is hosted in well known venues such as Filmbase in Temple Bar. A highlight of the festival is the screening of the short film, Anna. It’s a story about an elderly gent, Mr Michalis, who is obsessed with the lead female character in a daytime soap named \u2018Anna\u2019. Mary the lead character who looks after Mr Michalis, embarks on an adventure to investigate how important this soap opera star is.

The Dublin Bay Prawn Festival 2015 is taking place this weekend and it is a a very popular event. There is good food, but also lots of other events and for many people it is just a good reason to go to Howth for the day.<\/p>\n

Many restaurants have special Prawn Festival Dinner Menus and there is a Festival Village near the Harbour with Cooking Demos, Food Stalls and Family Fun from 11:00-17:00. The Howth Coast Guard Station and the RNLI Station are open for visitors. And there are craft stalls, History exhibitions and Music performances in the Arts & Heritage Marquee. Live music is available also in the evenings and on Sunday during the day in Pubs and Restaurants and Family Entertainment will be on the Village Square.<\/p>\n

In previous years, the programme on the website gave a nice and useful indication of which events were free and which weren’t with just a Euro sign behind the event. This year, the person putting the events up wasn’t as visitor friendly. You can still see last years list of full day events here<\/a>. The events are the same again and still have the Euro sign indicator. The new events list for Saturday<\/a> and Sunday<\/a> unfortunately lost that useful feature.<\/p>\n

It is a wonderful weekend out if the weather is good because you have some good food, some markets and can go for walk on the Pier or around Howth Head. if the weather is not so good, you still have plenty of pubs and restaurants in Howth to at least enjoy some prawns.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

The Union of Students in Ireland is inviting to a World Record Attempt for “building” the biggest human love heart in the world as part of their Marriage Equality Campaign.<\/p>\n

Digiwise is a family programme to learn how to use social media apps in a safe way. It consists of two classes: The first one is for parents only. The Dublin Bay Prawn Festival 2015 is taking place this weekend and it is a a very popular event. There is good food, but also lots of other events and for many people it is just a good reason to go to Howth for the day.<\/p>\n

Many restaurants have special Prawn Festival Dinner Menus and there is a Festival Village near the Harbour with Cooking Demos, Food Stalls and Family Fun from 11:00-17:00. The Howth Coast Guard Station and the RNLI Station are open for visitors. And there are craft stalls, History exhibitions and Music performances in the Arts & Heritage Marquee. Live music is available also in the evenings and on Sunday during the day in Pubs and Restaurants and Family Entertainment will be on the Village Square.<\/p>\n

In previous years, the programme on the website gave a nice and useful indication of which events were free and which weren’t with just a Euro sign behind the event. This year, the person putting the events up wasn’t as visitor friendly. You can still see last years list of full day events here<\/a>. The events are the same again and still have the Euro sign indicator. The new events list for Saturday<\/a> and Sunday<\/a> unfortunately lost that useful feature.<\/p>\n

It is a wonderful weekend out if the weather is good because you have some good food, some markets and can go for walk on the Pier or around Howth Head. if the weather is not so good, you still have plenty of pubs and restaurants in Howth to at least enjoy some prawns.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

The last “Up Close with Music” concert in this years Spring Series, by contemporary music ensemble “Concorde” will be run in the Royal Hibernian Academy.<\/p>\n

The focus is on new Irish music in an international context and the programme showcases new commissions by Irish composers Linda Buckley, Ed Bennett and Jane O\u2019Leary. Following submission of over 250 scores from composers around the world, Concorde has selected music from the USA, Scotland, Spain, Finland, Australia, Iceland, Hong Kong, Portugal, England and Sweden to feature alongside works by Irish composers.<\/p>\n

The good news is, however, that after 18:00 you don’t need any tickets and access is freely available. Stock will be replenished throughout the day, so even if you come in the evening slot, you still have a good chance of getting a bargain. Clothes are sold at EUR 20 per kilo.<\/p>\n

There are Irish monks everywhere in the known world (in Britain, Scotland, France, Switzerland, Belgium, Italy, Slovakia, Russia, Iceland, Greenland, America) and their skills and their knowledge of reading and bookmaking, made them counsellors in Charlemagne\u2019s Court, founders of monasteries, cities and universities, teachers and educators, publishers and very well respected figures in other fields.<\/p>\n

The Bealtaine Festival “celebrates creativity as we age” and is in essence a month long festival for older people organised by Age and Opportunity, but the term “older people” is a difficult one because we more think of elderly people or old people, but Bealtaine is definitely open for everybody from around 55.<\/p>\n

It is a nationwide programme with dance to cinema, painting to theatre and any other type of creative pursuits you could think of.<\/p>\n

Dublin Mountains Partnership – Guided Walks<\/h2>\n

Every month the Dublin Mountain Partnership runs free guided walks in the Dublin Mountains on some Saturdays or Sundays during the month. Tacsa\u00ed!? Wie bitte?
\n<\/strong><\/p>\n

What I selected today for the This is Odd! section is not really THAT odd and not outrageous, but it is still intriguing and especially for a foreigner causes some consternation.<\/p>\n

If you have ever been abroad in a non-English speaking country, I am sure that you have witnessed business owners and their employees going out their way to serve\/greet\/help you in English instead of their native language. They do whatever they can, to accommodate you. And if you are a business owner or have ever considered to start a business, you probably have thought about what name you would choose. Most think, it should be a name that is easily recognisable, understandable, pronounceable and that ideally provides some relevant information about what you do to your customers.<\/p>\n

And then you see a car with “TACSAI” written on the side! :-O<\/p>\n

Taxi drivers can choose if they want to have the big sticker on the front door of their Taxi in English or in Irish. The vast majority chooses English (and possibly considers the points above), but a surprisingly large amount of Taxis in Dublin use the Irish language version “Tacsa\u00ed”. And the ones that choose Tacsai seem to go against all logical reasons for choosing a specific business name as a service provider in an industry that particularly serves a very international audience. Unsurprisingly – but somewhat inconsistently – they won’t greet you with “Conas at\u00e1 t\u00fa?” when you enter the taxi, but their brand on the outside is not at all considering to accommodate their international customer base.<\/p>\n

Without a doubt you might think of “800 years of occupation” and “forced adoption of English” as reasons why some prefer the Irish language brand, but there are also other countries in this world where English was forced upon the population and you probably won’t be too surprised that Indian taxis are called “Taxi” despite the role of Britain in their history.<\/p>\n

Even more puzzling, though, is why the word “Tacsai” even exists! The word “taxa” is originally Latin and means “charging”. That word was used in 1890 in Germany to make “Taxameter”, an automatic meter to record the distance and fare. So does “Tacsai” have the same root? Does it go back to the Latin “taxa”? No, not at all! It is a made up word that tries to copy but be different at the same time.<\/p>\n

I’d say the Irish that is used nowadays could easily live with some “foreign” words like “Taxi”. It hasn’t done any harm to all the other languages that just use the word “Taxi”. But there seems to be a flavour of Irish speakers that seem to have to translate EVERYTHING just for the sake of it. After all there is even a word for “Internet”, one of these olden Gaelic communication concepts, you know!? In case you want to know, it is the “Idirghr\u00e9as\u00e1n”. Oddly, force-translating modern words makes Irish more outdated than if it just adopted the words!<\/p>\n
