The Record Store Day(s) are the biggest event this week. I know, that is not THAT big, but you get some weeks like that. If not, let me explain briefly: I normally don’t ask for anything for myself from the wonderful Dublin Event Guide community. Spanish painter Jordi Forni\u00e9s is currently in Asia for two research masters: one based on the interaction of painting and music, with the Lasalle College of the Arts (in Singapore) and Goldsmiths University of London, and another one based on the use of unconventional materials in painting with The University of Sydney.<\/p>\n

Illustrator Jo Jobson is inspired by the narratives that shape our lives: the stories, poetry and drama that we share and are entertained by. She also draws inspiration from the underlying narratives of the mundane, the everyday objects we use and the human experiences we cannot avoid. Her love of fairytales and folklore from all over the world comes across in her work and she likes to explore their underlying themes – along with how they can connect with our own experiences.<\/p>\n

Jo has been drawing, painting and illustrating all her life. Whilst living in Japan and Poland, in particular, she was very impressed by the art work produced by the people there. It continues to influence her work to this day.<\/p>\n

“Music and technology are getting cosy for this novel musical installation which will allow 12 people at a time to create musical loops by pressing buttons on a system of electronically controlled but mechanically played acoustic instruments. Each electronic sequencer will control one note of a marimba and a chime, the sound they make is up to you! The installation takes its name from the latin word for 12 and was designed and built by Ed Devane only last year. Ed will be on hand for the duration of the installation to show visitors how the system works and get the creative juices flowing.”<\/p>\n

In connection with this exhibition, the Dublin School of Flamenco presents an evening of Sevillanas in collaboration with the Olivier Cornet Gallery and the Irish Georgian Society. The lecture examines the commemorative \u2018afterlife\u2019 of a single, self-contained WWI battlefield: the Gallipoli campaign of 1915. The original trenchlines of the Gallipoli peninsula are preserved to this day by the surfeit of monuments and commemorative sites arrayed on either side of the ridges and gullies that once narrowly divided allied and Turkish combatants. But whereas a century ago the battlelines signalled bitter conflict and bloody mayhem, today the enduring message is one of shared sacrifice and reconciliation. In 1916 the Easter Rising took place on Easter Monday, but that obviously was on a specific date and it would make a lot more sense to commemorate it on that date than on Easter Monday every year and the GPO Museum seems the only organisation that got that.<\/p>\n

It was 24 April 1916 when it all happened and this year, 99 years later, the GPO Museum is inviting you to a free tour on that day. The tours start at 10:00, 12:00 and 14:00 and you can book your free tickets on the Eventbrite site here<\/a>.<\/p>\n

The museum closes at the end of May to be replaced by a Commemorative Centre for 1916. SO if you haven’t seen the museum yet, not would be the best time and free tickets are also available via this site<\/a>.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

Helmets for kids on scooters? Why?
\n<\/strong><\/p>\n

Let me start with this: I am NOT an expert on this, but I see it lately everywhere and I don’t really get it. The mini plastic scooters for kids on their way home from school etc seem to have spread like a virus. There is a school in Booterstown where I get the impression that not a single child still uses their legs and feet to move their bodies forward. Instead they stand on their little scooter and get the parent to push them on the foot path. Obesity here I come? Maybe, but that is not what puzzles me most.<\/p>\n

Even more than the new transport mode, it puzzles me that every child is wearing a bicycle helmet and I don’t understand why. A bicycle helmet can help in some (not all!) situations when a cyclist falls on the ground due to a slip or contact with something (for example a car), But if it is a serious impact, we have seen in Formula 1 driver Michael Schumacher’s case that even a proper skiing helmet can’t properly protect your head.<\/p>\n

So these helmets are providing questionable protection, but there is another aspect. Due to the physics of a bike, you can’t get off really fast and therefore there is a higher chance that you fall on your head than on an open scooter. I’d say if you fall off a scooter you more hurt wrists, arms and knees. So why these helmets? Is it case of “better a weak protection than none”? Or is it that parents want to educate their kids to wear a helmet by default? Because the next question is really how standing on a scooter is different than walking. Does that mean that from now on parents will insist on their children wearing a helmet also in the (rare!) cases that their kids walk?<\/p>\n

By the way, I don’t have a problem with the kids wearing a helmet and there is no harm done at all, but I find it odd that a differentiation is made between slow-speed-pushed scooter on a foot path and walking.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n
