Hi all!<\/p>\n

Something interesting happened this week: For well over a year I post a daily message on Facebook and it is the nature of Facebook that people can comment and like there. I would prefer some more engagement from people, but, hey, what can you do. Event announcements are not necessarily messages that get a huge amount of people to comment, they just read it and all is good. But at least there is SOME interaction.<\/p>\n

Here in the online magazine it is different! For 407 weeks I am writing this newsletter week after week, but the direct engagement every week is tiny. You would have to send me an e-mail to provide me feedback and while that sometimes happens, it doesn’t happen too frequently.<\/p>\n

Last week, however, I had to ask you to help with donations because the help in that respect had decreased quite a lot and 13 people did donate money as a direct reaction to my appeal. As I said, that was a direct reaction and it felt great to get that feedback. Thanks a lot to everyone who helped, you did not only help with crucial money that is necessary to keep the Dublin Event Guide going, but you also showed me that there are people out there that care enough that they react and even put their hand in their pocket to help! THANKS!!<\/p>\n

If you didn’t get around to it, you can still help. The weakness of the Euro in comparison to the Dollar keeps increasing my cost. And you can also hep by spreading the word. I think we should definitely be able to reach 50,000 people in Dublin, but we have still a long way to go. Imagine if everyone just got ONE additional person to subscribe to the Dublin Event Guide (for Free Events). That would be an immediate increase by a few thousand subscribers. Would be super!!!!<\/p>\n

The “Feel Good Slot” at this place in the Dublin Event Guide is to share some inspirational, motivational or thought provoking quotes, stories or video clips. You wonder why I added this section to this e-mail magazine? If your week was great, you might not need it, but most of us had some challenging moments in the last week and there could be more in the coming week and this section is for the people that want to overcome the hurdles, achieve more and remember that despite all, life is great!<\/p>\n

Today’s feel good slot is a video clip from a company that repeatedly creates really good videos about loving or at least accepting yourself. It is a pity that the video is in French (with subtitles!) because it reduces the effect somewhat when you read it (and you have to read fast!) than if you hear it. But the story is simple: They got a number of women to write in a notebook everytime they had any thoughts about themselves and interestingly most of these thoughts were negative. Then actors learned what the women had written about themselves. Next they invited the women back and had them overhearing a conversation at the next table in a cafe where one actor says to another actor all the negative things. It is brutal critique (“You look ugly. You are really fat and unattractive.” etc) and if one person destroyed another person like that it would be outrageous, but we do it to ourselves all the time! Edel Corrigan, a copywriter and novelist and who has a M. Phil in Creative Writing from Trinity College is running a 6-week writing class in Fumbally Exchange, where you will learn how to write. From the extreme beginners who haven’t written anything more in-depth than an email since school to the writer with a short story or start of a novel stuffed away in a drawer, you’ll get writing prompts to get you going, advice on how to keep going, feedback if you desire it and a place and a space to begin writing.<\/p>\n

Every class will be focused around writing prompts designed to get you writing from the very beginning of the course. Whether you feel you don\u2019t have a “voice” or the courage to p-p-pick up a pen, these easy exercises will have you scribbling away in no time.<\/p>\n

You will lose the fear and will reach freedom from the fear that, “you can’t” or “you’re not good enough”. Anyone can write – sign up and discover your writing voice.<\/p>\n

MusicTown Festival<\/h2>\n

From 10-19 April the first MusicTown Festival will take place in Dublin. More than 50 musical events for all ages and all tastes will take place and some are free, others are not. But many require tickets even if they are free, so have a look at http:\/\/www.musictown.ie<\/a> to see what you are interested in and to get tickets if they are required.<\/p>\n

H\u00e4ndel’s Messiah was the original starting point, but the discussion about the event immediately brought up that we need to provide a festival that offers something for everybody and not just turn it into a H\u00e4ndel festival.<\/p>\n

There will be a busking competition, lunchtime concerts, outdoor opera, workshops and masterclasses.<\/p>\n

Saucy Sundays not free anymore<\/h2>\n

It is with regret that I have to tell you today, that Saucy Sundays – a weekly Sunday evening gig night in the Grand Social – will from now on not be listed in the Dublin Event Guide (for Free Events) anymore. The organisers unfortunately decided to move away from “free” and to charge an admission charge of EUR 3 from this Sunday. EUR 3 is definitely not a huge amount of money, but it is more than Zero, so the rules are clear.<\/p>\n

The money from the admission charge is intended to go to the performers, which is fair and we can’t really quibble with that. Musicians also need to pay for rent and food etc. On the other hand, I wonder if these performances were really seen as revenue opportunities by the performers or rather as effective promotional events!?<\/p>\n

After the Sunday Roast’s demise in January, this is unfortunately the second Sunday evening live music event that will disappear from the list of free events and that is a big pity. But it is a natural development that bands that start with free gigs will charge money if they are good and when they are “discovered”, so I guess we have to accept the same from events.<\/p>\n

The “Dublin: One City, One Book” Festival is a yearly festival in April during which one selected book that features Dublin is celebrated with a whole variety of events. This year the people selecting a book couldn’t decide and chose not one but THREE books, but they are in one trilogy, so there is a link. The chosen books are The Commitments, The Snapper and The Van by Roddy Doyle and these books are also called the Barrytown Trilogy. Lifelogging – Science Gallery Exhibition<\/h2>\n

“Lifelogging – Do you count?” is the title of the newest Science Gallery exhibition, which started on Friday 13 Feb and will run until 12 April.<\/p>\n

Lifelogging is part exhibition, part Science Gallery Lab where you can take part in research projects and it deals with us tracking ourselves, measuring things we do and logging everything from heartbeat to heartbreak.<\/p>\n

Get a taste for tracking as you play games with your emotions, use your brainwaves to sort files, generate music wearing sensors, and explore a virtual world filled with real dreams and memories.<\/p>\n

The exhibits at this exhibition are fascinating: There is George Reynolds who recorded his health on paper since 2003. A sensible and understandable version of lifelogging. On the other end of the spectrum is Alberto Frigo who takes a picture every times he holds an object with his right hand. He started in 2003 and plans to continue until 2040. On the surface it doesn’t make sense AT ALL. But when you talk to him, you find out that there is a surprising sense to what he does.<\/p>\n

The exhibition contains 16 exhibits some so odd that you should get the super helpful and knowledgeable Science Gallery mediators to help you understand what is behind it.<\/p>\n

In one area, every week another group\/organisation will involve you in their work (the Lab part) and I will explain their project in a separate event posting in the weekly Dublin Event Guide.<\/p>\n

From Wednesday until Sunday (only Saturday this week because of Easter), the Lab in the Science Gallery that accompanies the Lifelogging exhibition will look at “Your Healthy Self”. Shimmer, a provider of wearable sensor technology and solutions, will run this week’s Lab.<\/p>\n

Shimmer will be testing and prototyping new technologies in the Lab all week. A team of researchers will measure a range of physiological metrics (galvanic skin response\/sweat levels, heart rate etc…) at different locations around the body in an attempt to quantify emotional responses to an array of stimuli. Joining them will be the researchers from DCU Sport, demonstrating the latest in wearable sports technology.<\/p>\n

1916 Easter Rising Commemoration<\/h2>\n

The formal Easter Rising Commemoration event is on Sunday in O’Connell Street, the interesting event is on Monday.<\/p>\n

The Sunday event is a somewhat anachronistic military ceremony attended by President Michael D. Higgins, Taoiseach Enda Kenny and Defence Minister Simon Coveney.<\/p>\n

Defence Forces Personnel, including a brass band, a pipe band and representatives of the Army, the Air Corps and the Naval Service will take part in the Ceremony, and there will be a fly over of some Air Corps planes at the end of it.<\/p>\n

During the event, the 1916 Proclamation will be read by an Officer from the Defence Forces. The President will then lay a wreath to commemorate those who died in 1916.<\/p>\n

If you want to be at that event you will have to wait for 45 minutes, because you will have to be in position at 11:15. In previous years, the ceremony was shown live on TV, but it seems that even RTE has given up on it now. Neither RTE1 nor RTE2 seem to show it and as the only alternative, the Irish Governmemt’s News Service at www.merrionstreet.ie<\/a> suggests that you follow their “live coverage” on Twitter at https:\/\/twitter.com\/merrionstreet<\/a><\/p>\n

O’Connell Street will be closed from 05:00-15:00 and traffic will be diverted.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

Dublin is turning the clock back: Experience Irish life as it was 100 years ago, when O\u2019Connell Street becomes an Edwardian thoroughfare. There will be lots of events during the day. In more than 60 talks and exhibitions, you can explore all aspects of social, political and cultural life during this period.<\/p>\n

+ The main event will be “Step into History<\/a>” on O’Connell Street, with a restored tram from 1914, a Vintage Carousel, a Steam Engine, Actors on the street recreating life in 1915, an oversized Gramophone and Guided Walking tours every 30 min. leaving at the James Larkin statue.<\/p>\n

+ A tented village on O’Connell Street will give you a glimpse into 1915 professions<\/a> with live demonstrations and talks by cooper, milliner, barber, hair-dresser and suit maker.<\/p>\n

+ Eason’s (Readings), Clery’s (shop window decoration) and Supermacs (Family events) will contribute.<\/p>\n

+ A special lunch menu<\/a> from 1915 and a authentic high tea from that year will be available in Wynn’s Hotel. And Clery’s, The Gresham and The Church Bar also promise 1915 authenticity for food and treats.<\/p>\n

+ On a Music Hall Stage<\/a> in O’Connell Street singers, musicians and bands from around the country will perform music from the 1915 era. Performers are The High Kings, The Kilkennys and Beoga, Jack L, tenor Simon Morgan, soprano Mairead Buicke, An Post Men\u2019s Choir, C\u00f3r Ch\u00fail Aodha, the Piccolo Lasso Children\u2019s Choir, The Brook Singers, East Coast Jazz Band, 4-in-a-Bar barbershop quartet and the Rathmines and Rathgar Musical Society.<\/p>\n

+ Eight episodes of ‘Insurrection<\/a>‘, a television drama made by Telef\u00eds \u00c9ireann for the 50th anniversary of the Rising will be screened for the first time in 50 years in Liberty Hall (12:00-17:00). Tickets are available on the door. This is a charity event and your donations for the Equity Actors’ Benevolent Fund are appreciated.<\/p>\n

+ The Silent Moviedrome<\/a> Cinemobile will screen films by the O’Kalem Film Company from 1910-1915, dealing with Ireland and Irish subjects.<\/p>\n

+ Lots of talks (scroll to the middle of the looong page here: http:\/\/www.rte.ie\/1916<\/a>) will also take place in various venues. I counted at least 15 events, some with multiple lectures. Some are drop-in, others have to be booked.<\/p>\n

Every year the Plato Centre at TCD runs a Stephen MacKenna Lecture, which is named after the Irish translator of Plotinus.<\/p>\n

This lecture series honours distinguished contemporary scholars working in the area of Plato and the Platonic Tradition. This year’s lecture is by Peter Adamson (Professor of Philosophy at the Ludwig\u2013Maximilians\u2013Universit\u00e4t M\u00fcnchen). His research interests lie in late ancient philosophy and Arabic Philosophy. He is also the presenter of the King’s College London produced podcast The History of Philosophy Without Any Gaps.<\/p>\n

Do you and your family celebrate birthdays? Yes? I bet these birthdays are made up of a day and a month and a year. So, for example 12 June 1986 or 06 August 1952 and you might even remember some important events from your history classes or from recent events? The Second World War ended on 02 September 1945, and the attacks on the World Trade Centre happened on 11 September 2001. All very clear and internationally the same system is used. It is called a “date”!<\/p>\n

But what about the 1916 Rising? Do you know when it happened? Sure, on Easter Monday! Come again? Easter Monday!<\/p>\n

Easter is the only relevant, completely moveable feast in our calender. It could take place any time between 22 March and 25 April and is calculated based on moon and sun<\/a>. In 725 the rule to determine the date of Easter was “The Sunday following the full Moon which falls on or after the equinox”. This was modified a little, but it still uses the same principle.<\/p>\n

So, how about we celebrate your birthday instead of on 12 June 1986, on the first Tuesday after the full moon in the sixth month of the year? You would probably say that that is stupid, right?<\/p>\n

But what about the Easter Rising in 1916? Yes, in 1916 it took place in Easter Monday, but does that justify to celebrate it every year on Easter Monday? ONLY if we can celebrate your birthday also based on the lunar-sun cycle!<\/p>\n

The event in 1916 took place on 24 April 1916 not on 06 April as it is celebrated this year or on 28 March as the 100th anniversary is celebrated in 2016. And that does NOT make ANY sense at all!<\/p>\n

Ohh and you might think the problem was because that many years ago, they gave the day more relevance than the date?! So in this day and age we should be smarter, right? Can I remind you of the “Good Friday Agreement”? Looks like an Irish problem!?<\/p>\n
