Did you see the parade? I was talking to a number of people afterwards and the common ground was that it is stagnating for the last 3 years. Not getting better anymore! Actually this year the floats were less interesting, the theme “Celebrate Now” has absolutely no meaning and none of the floats seems to care about the theme and the marching bands were plentiful but a lot lower profile than last year. So could it be that the quality is going down? What is your opinion? Closer to home: Ladies and Gentlemen, we have a problem! There are less and less donations and this month just EUR 80 came together from the wonderful people that did continue to support the Dublin Event Guide (for Free Events). I really really don’t like begging, but more donations are required to keep the whole service going. The money is not for me (I actually don’t make a cent from the Dublin Event Guide.) instead it is to cover all the cost. I am in the process of looking for cheaper service providers, but if you don’t think the Dublin Event Guide is worth just EUR 1 per month, then we have a completely different problem! So if you can spare EUR 1 per month (that’s just 25 cent per edition!!) please donate EUR 12 for the year (or more if you can …or even less if you can’t). The Imps – Comed Improv – Ticket Competition<\/h2>\n

The Imps (formerly: The Improrphans) are a comedy improv troupe\/show and they run regular events in Dublin. Sometimes the were free and other times they are not. The Imps are fortnightly in the Workman’s Club and monthly in MVP and the next shows are on 24 March in the Workman’s Club and on 26 March in MVP. The Tuesday show is a special double bill where The Imps will be joined by another improv group, the Identical Knees.<\/p>\n

Admission is EUR 5 and you can pay at the door, but to spread the word, they have made some tickets available for Dublin Event Guide readers. I have two pairs of tickets for the show on 24 March and two pairs for the show on 26 March.<\/p>\n

Polish-Irish Festival<\/h2>\n

From Saturday 21 March until Sunday 29 March the Polska-Eire\/Polish-Irish Festival will take place. Surpisingly the website www.polskaeirefestival.com<\/a> diverts to the website of the Department of Justice and Equality (!?), but unfortunately there is not much more than a PDF with the event programme. And this event programme lists a whole range of events for the week from 21-27 March, but not much detail. Maybe these events are not for the public?<\/p>\n

Next Saturday and Sunday (28+29 March a number of public events will take place in Temple Bar on Wolfe Tone Square and other locations and I will tell you more about it next week. But feel free to have a look already now and maybe some events this week will catch your attention and you could then ring the number given on the programme to find out more. Even a Press Release that was sent to me didn’t contain any details about this week’s events, so they seem to be by invitation only.<\/p>\n

Cycling along the Liffey – Your opinion counts!<\/h2>\n

Dublin City wants to create a cycle route from Phoenix Park to the Point Depot and to achieve that, some significant changes need to be made to the street layout along the Liffey (especially from Heuston Station to O’Connell Bridge). Discussions about this started already more than 3 years ago and it will take another while (at least until 2017) until the final plan is put into reality. But now is the time when your opinion is asked because there are four options for providing such a new cycle path.<\/p>\n

The public consultation runs from 19 March until 17 April and if you are interested in Dublin you should look at the different options at http:\/\/www.dublincitycycling.ie\/blog\/?p=1479<\/a> and hopefully you will have a few minutes to fill in the short 2-page questionnaire (Online Survey) here<\/a>. You don’t have to be a cyclist or a regular user of the route along the Liffey, your opinion counts no matter what your circumstances are.<\/p>\n

The new route will have an impact not only on cyclists but also on pedestrians, bus users and car users. Traffic jams will get longer and slower for some of the options and car park spaces will disappear, pedestrians, buses and possibly cars will be diverted for other options.<\/p>\n

Maps, pictures and descriptions are on the website, but if you would like to see the options in person, go to the Civic Offices on Wood Quay, the Central Library in the Ilac Centre or the Dublin City Library & Archive in 138-144 Pearse Street, where you find information stands.<\/p>\n

Frank Rieger, born in 1971, is a German hacker, author and internet activist, as well as spokesperson for the Chaos Computer Club. His texts and essays on the impact of technology on society can be read regularly in major papers like the Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung or Lettre International. The Chaos Computer Club (CCC) is Europe’s largest association of hackers. It provides information about technical issues and their influence on society, organizes campaigns and events and works on publications as well as encrypting services and communication infrastructure.<\/p>\n

“Lifelogging – Do you count?” is the title of the newest Science Gallery exhibition, which started on Friday 13 Feb and will run until 12 April.<\/p>\n

Lifelogging is part exhibition, part Science Gallery Lab where you can take part in research projects and it deals with us tracking ourselves, measuring things we do and logging everything from heartbeat to heartbreak.<\/p>\n

Get a taste for tracking as you play games with your emotions, use your brainwaves to sort files, generate music wearing sensors, and explore a virtual world filled with real dreams and memories.<\/p>\n

The exhibits at this exhibition are fascinating: There is George Reynolds who recorded his health on paper since 2003. A sensible and understandable version of lifelogging. On the other end of the spectrum is Alberto Frigo who takes a picture every times he holds an object with his right hand. He started in 2003 and plans to continue until 2040. On the surface it doesn’t make sense AT ALL. But when you talk to him, you find out that there is a surprising sense to what he does.<\/p>\n

The exhibition contains 16 exhibits some so odd that you should get the super helpful and knowledgeable Science Gallery mediators to help you understand what is behind it.<\/p>\n

In one area, every week another group\/organisation will involve you in their work (the Lab part) and I will explain their project in a separate event posting in the weekly Dublin Event Guide.<\/p>\n

From Wednesday until Sunday, the Lab in the Science Gallery that accompanies the Lifeblogging exhibition will look at “Your Say Whuuut? Self”.<\/p>\n

There will be an interactive installation where visitors can try out us+, a video-chat that monitors conversation and provides real-time feedback for optimised interaction.<\/p>\n

What if a computer could understand our relationships and algorithms could suggest better interpersonal decisions than we can make ourselves? When does it go too far? Want to find out who stresses you out or makes your happy? By tracking your overall physical and emotional responses while you hang out, the pplkpr app automatically manages your relationships so you don\u2019t have to!<\/p>\n

Us+\/pplkpr creators Lauren McCarty and Kyle McDonald are both artists and programmers, based in Brooklyn NY and teach at NYU ITP. Us+\/pplkpr are art projects that questions the future of quantified relationships.<\/p>\n

The next protest march against Water Charges takes place on Saturday. There are three Assembly Points at Connolly Station, at Merrion Square and at Heuston Station. From there, three marches will all go to the City Centre.<\/p>\n

However, there are a few problems:
\nIt seems that the organisers are unsure about the starting time. There are two different times here<\/a> and here<\/a> given on Facebook. The 14:00 event is attracting lots more people than the 13:00 event, but I would guess that the REAL starting time is 13:00.
\nAlso there doesn’t seem any central event, so eventually the participants from the three (or will it be six? Three at 13:00 and three at 14:00?)) marches will all end up in O’Connell Street and won’t know what to do next.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

“Lifelogging – Do you count?” is the title of the newest Science Gallery exhibition, which started on Friday 13 Feb and will run until 12 April.<\/p>\n

Lifelogging is part exhibition, part Science Gallery Lab where you can take part in research projects and it deals with us tracking ourselves, measuring things we do and logging everything from heartbeat to heartbreak.<\/p>\n

Get a taste for tracking as you play games with your emotions, use your brainwaves to sort files, generate music wearing sensors, and explore a virtual world filled with real dreams and memories.<\/p>\n

The exhibits at this exhibition are fascinating: There is George Reynolds who recorded his health on paper since 2003. A sensible and understandable version of lifelogging. On the other end of the spectrum is Alberto Frigo who takes a picture every times he holds an object with his right hand. He started in 2003 and plans to continue until 2040. On the surface it doesn’t make sense AT ALL. But when you talk to him, you find out that there is a surprising sense to what he does.<\/p>\n

The exhibition contains 16 exhibits some so odd that you should get the super helpful and knowledgeable Science Gallery mediators to help you understand what is behind it.<\/p>\n

In one area, every week another group\/organisation will involve you in their work (the Lab part) and I will explain their project in a separate event posting in the weekly Dublin Event Guide.<\/p>\n

The Sundays at Noon Concert Series continues in the Sculpture Gallery at the Hugh Lane Gallery. This series of free (mainly classical) concerts continues to present the best of Irish and International music and musicians. Concerts run from September to June.<\/p>\n

The next concert will feature Finghin Collins piano and Istv\u00e1n V\u00e1rdai cello playing works from Brahms, De Falla and Shostakovich.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

There will be an interactive installation where visitors can try out us+, a video-chat that monitors conversation and provides real-time feedback for optimised interaction.<\/p>\n

What if a computer could understand our relationships and algorithms could suggest better interpersonal decisions than we can make ourselves? When does it go too far? Want to find out who stresses you out or makes your happy? By tracking your overall physical and emotional responses while you hang out, the pplkpr app automatically manages your relationships so you don\u2019t have to!<\/p>\n

Us+\/pplkpr creators Lauren McCarty and Kyle McDonald are both artists and programmers, based in Brooklyn NY and teach at NYU ITP. Us+\/pplkpr are art projects that questions the future of quantified relationships.<\/p>\n

“The Essential Berkeley and Neo\u2013Berkeleian Empiricism” is a lecture series of the Department of Philosophy. The lectures are all given by Professor David Berman and they will take place in the Neill Hoey Lecture Theatre, Trinity Long Room Hub.<\/p>\n

The lectures will take place on Monday 23 March, Wednesday 25 March and Thursday 26 March from 10:00-12:00 on all three days.<\/p>\n

The lectures will present George Berkeley’s essential philosophy and its development and how it became a museum piece, but could become a living philosophy again. George Berkeley (1685-1753), also known as Bishop Berkeley, was an Anglo-Irish philosopher whose primary achievement was the advancement of a theory he called “immaterialism”. This theory says that material substance does not exist, instead all familiar objects like tables and chairs are only ideas in our minds and can not exist without being perceived.<\/p>\n

There is something fascinating about this theory, but could imagine that the lectures might be challenging for a newbie in that area.<\/p>\n

“The Essential Berkeley and Neo\u2013Berkeleian Empiricism” is a lecture series of the Department of Philosophy. The lectures are all given by Professor David Berman and they will take place in the Neill Hoey Lecture Theatre, Trinity Long Room Hub.<\/p>\n

The lectures will take place on Monday 23 March, Wednesday 25 March and Thursday 26 March from 10:00-12:00 on all three days.<\/p>\n

The lectures will present George Berkeley’s essential philosophy and its development and how it became a museum piece, but could become a living philosophy again. George Berkeley (1685-1753), also known as Bishop Berkeley, was an Anglo-Irish philosopher whose primary achievement was the advancement of a theory he called “immaterialism”. This theory says that material substance does not exist, instead all familiar objects like tables and chairs are only ideas in our minds and can not exist without being perceived.<\/p>\n

There is something fascinating about this theory, but could imagine that the lectures might be challenging for a newbie in that area.<\/p>\n

“The Essential Berkeley and Neo\u2013Berkeleian Empiricism” is a lecture series of the Department of Philosophy. The lectures are all given by Professor David Berman and they will take place in the Neill Hoey Lecture Theatre, Trinity Long Room Hub.<\/p>\n

The lectures will take place on Monday 23 March, Wednesday 25 March and Thursday 26 March from 10:00-12:00 on all three days.<\/p>\n

The lectures will present George Berkeley’s essential philosophy and its development and how it became a museum piece, but could become a living philosophy again. George Berkeley (1685-1753), also known as Bishop Berkeley, was an Anglo-Irish philosopher whose primary achievement was the advancement of a theory he called “immaterialism”. This theory says that material substance does not exist, instead all familiar objects like tables and chairs are only ideas in our minds and can not exist without being perceived.<\/p>\n

There is something fascinating about this theory, but could imagine that the lectures might be challenging for a newbie in that area.<\/p>\n

Two weeks ago I had an appointment at the NCT for my car. I left it a little late – as you do – and the NCT cert had already expired, so when I rang the call centre to make an appointment I was prepared for getting an appointment weeks away and I was very surprised when I was told that I could choose between either the following Monday, Tuesday or Wednesday. WHAT? Where is the NCT backlog that everybody talked about before?<\/p>\n

Well, the woman on the other side was not finished. She then told me, yes, you have a choice BUT the times are very early. Hmm, getting up really early is not my strongest point but if it HAS to be, ok. But then she tells me that the appointments are for either 01:30 on Monday or 00:30 on Tuesday or 00:30 on Wednesday. I wouldn’t call it really early. Just conveniently timed for a night owl. ;-)<\/p>\n

Ok, that was all odd. By the way, I went on Tuesday at 00:30 and against all expectation my car passed, but that is not the reason to mention it here. The odd part was what happened at the NCT test centre:<\/p>\n

If someone tells me Tuesday at 00:30, I would double check and say “So that is in the night from Monday to Tuesday at 00:30, right?” Yes it is! I didn’t even have to ask because the call centre woman already explained it again.<\/p>\n

But when I arrived at the test centre there was a big uproar at the reception desk. Someone got the days wrong!!! The person was told Monday at 00:30 and she arrived on Tuesday at 00:30! Ooops! Yes, it can happen, but then don’t act upset and blame others and shout like someone tried to hurt you. Tail between the legs and “oops” is a better choice of reaction. How could 00:30 on the day that follows after 24 hours of the Monday have passed NOT be Tuesday? We all make mistakes, but blaming others for your own mistakes is very very uncool!<\/p>\n<\/div>\n
