Great news! On Monday morning, I am invited to Dublin City FM (at 10:45) once again to talk about the “Dublin Event Guide (for Free Events)”. It will be only a relatively short interview and I am not sure what the reach of the station is at the moment, but it is the first opportunity this year again to spread the word about the Dublin Event Guide and I really appreciate these opportunities. “Dine In Dublin” a week long food festival in Dublin’s City Centre returns again from 23 Feb – 01 March. A whole range of restaurants have specials on the menu and also run special offers and there are some additional events like cooking demos and classes, tastings and food with music. AONTAS Adult Learners’ Festival<\/h2>\n

The yearly AONTAS Adult Learners’ Festival takes place from 23-28 February and the theme this year is “Learning: A Lifetime’s Work”. There will be lots of free events across the whole country, promoting learning opportunities for adults.<\/p>\n

During the festival there are 38 events in Dublin City, 9 in North Dublin, 5 in South Dublin and 3 in West Dublin and you can find the events here<\/a>. A selection is also included as separate listings in this Dublin Event Guide (for Free Events). From tours of St. Patrick’s Cathedral and March Library via Genealogy lectures at the National Library to an introduction to photography or social media, there are a good amount of classes available.<\/p>\n

The topics could maybe be a little wider spread, I couldn’t find anything for people that are interested in sports or music or science or business or literature or languages in the list of free events, but I’d say AONTAS would be very happy if they could increase the variety for next year and maybe you can offer your help teaching\/lecturing, if you have the skills.<\/p>\n

This exhibition is featuring watercolours and sketches by Roisin Murphy of the glasshouses of the National Botanic Gardens with particular attention to the work of the master iron founder Richard Turner (1798-1881).
\nTurner was highly sought after for his works with wrought and cast iron and glass. He is responsible for the iconic Curvilinear Range of glasshouses in Glasnevin as well as the glasshouses in the Winter Gardens in Regent’s Park, London and the Palm Houses in Belfast and The Royal Botanic Gardens, Kew.

In his solo exhibition “A Voodoo free Phenomenon” for the Project Arts Centre, Garrett Phelan explores the power and influence that cultural traditions and artefacts have on the contemporary psyche.<\/p>\n

Through the recollection of his own experience witnessing the winter solstice at Newgrange, and numerous visits to ancient sites throughout his life and travels, he questions the power such antiquated relics hold over us today.<\/p>\n

“The group exhibition shows the diverse practices of recipients of the UCD Science Artist in Residence Award. UCD Art in Science is a dynamic practice based programme that brings artists and scientists from undergraduate to professional levels, together in collaborative work. Since the pilot residency in 2012, the artists in residence have engaged with scientists in neuroscience, cognitive science, marine biology, plant biology, geophysics, paleobotany, advanced optical imaging, spectroscopy and astronomy. Their conversations have led to an inspiring body of work, through a mutual openness to communicating across the traditional boundaries of the disciplines. The diversity of the work reflects the open and dynamic nature of the project and includes, sculpture, installation, painting, drawing, video and performances. We will also launch our programme of public events and publication to accompany the exhibition.”<\/p>\n

“Lifelogging – Do you count?” is the title of the newest Science Gallery exhibition, which started on Friday 13 Feb and will run until 12 April.<\/p>\n

Lifelogging is part exhibition, part Science Gallery Lab where you can take part in research projects and it deals with us tracking ourselves, measuring things we do and logging everything from heartbeat to heartbreak.<\/p>\n

Get a taste for tracking as you play games with your emotions, use your brainwaves to sort files, generate music wearing sensors, and explore a virtual world filled with real dreams and memories.<\/p>\n

The exhibits at this exhibition are fascinating: There is George Reynolds who recorded his health on paper since 2003. A sensible and understandable version of lifelogging. On the other end of the spectrum is Alberto Frigo who takes a picture every times he holds an object with his right hand. He started in 2003 and plans to continue until 2040. On the surface it doesn’t make sense AT ALL. But when you talk to him, you find out that there is a surprising sense to what he does.<\/p>\n

The exhibition contains 16 exhibits some so odd that you should get the super helpful and knowledgeable Science Gallery mediators to help you understand what is behind it.<\/p>\n

In one area, every week another group\/organisation will involve you in their work (the Lab part) and I will explain their project in a separate event posting in the weekly Dublin Event Guide.<\/p>\n

Researchers at the ADAPT Centre, Trinity College Dublin have teamed up with AYLIEN, experts in Text and Sentiment Analysis, to create Bigfoot – a system that captures your online persona and determines how much of your data is out there. Take part in psychometric testing and contribute to real research on social media, online personalities, and data exhaust.<\/p>\n

At this Historical Re-enactment of events around the Napoleonic Wars (1803-1815), “Regiment Irlanda”, one of three Irish regiments in the Spanish Army during the Napoleonic Wars, will display foot and arms drill of 200 years ago. Re-enactment group “Lord Edward\u2019s Own” will to the performance.<\/p>\n

There will also be allies and enemies there as British Redcoats and French Grenadiers demonstrate their own drills, weapons and uniforms.<\/p>\n

“Lifelogging – Do you count?” is the title of the newest Science Gallery exhibition, which started on Friday 13 Feb and will run until 12 April.<\/p>\n

Lifelogging is part exhibition, part Science Gallery Lab where you can take part in research projects and it deals with us tracking ourselves, measuring things we do and logging everything from heartbeat to heartbreak.<\/p>\n

Get a taste for tracking as you play games with your emotions, use your brainwaves to sort files, generate music wearing sensors, and explore a virtual world filled with real dreams and memories.<\/p>\n

The exhibits at this exhibition are fascinating: There is George Reynolds who recorded his health on paper since 2003. A sensible and understandable version of lifelogging. On the other end of the spectrum is Alberto Frigo who takes a picture every times he holds an object with his right hand. He started in 2003 and plans to continue until 2040. On the surface it doesn’t make sense AT ALL. But when you talk to him, you find out that there is a surprising sense to what he does.<\/p>\n

The exhibition contains 16 exhibits some so odd that you should get the super helpful and knowledgeable Science Gallery mediators to help you understand what is behind it.<\/p>\n

In one area, every week another group\/organisation will involve you in their work (the Lab part) and I will explain their project in a separate event posting in the weekly Dublin Event Guide.<\/p>\n

Researchers at the ADAPT Centre, Trinity College Dublin have teamed up with AYLIEN, experts in Text and Sentiment Analysis, to create Bigfoot – a system that captures your online persona and determines how much of your data is out there. Family Workshop – Irish Design 2015<\/h2>\n

Irish Design 2015 is inviting to a series of Family Day Design Workshops in their Design Hub @ Dublin Castle.<\/p>\n

The workshops encourage creative thinking, help to build dexterity and introduce children to new design\/craft skills through playful experimentation with materials, techniques and ideas.<\/p>\n

On alternate Saturdays of every month young makers and their families are invited to the ID2015 Design Hub in Dublin Castle, to take part in hands-on design and crafting workshops which begin with a tour of the gallery, specially designed to get you in the mood for creating.<\/p>\n

The 60 minute hand-on workshops are designed for 5+ children with parents \/ guardians. The 10:30 session is suitable for 5-8 years and the 12:00 session is more advanced for 9-13 years.<\/p>\n

MY event is the best event the world has ever seen!
\n<\/strong><\/p>\n

I love enthusiasm and passion and people that are enthusiastic or passionate about what they do are sooo much easier to work with than people that constantly feel bored or depressed at work. In the event world, you expect that Press Releases are at least moderately enthusiastic, but often there is too much navel gazing going on. Which means that people involved in an event\/organisation start believing their own bs a little too much and forget that not every stone they touch can turn into gold.<\/p>\n

I regularly get Press Releases that sound like the headline: “My event is the best event the world has ever seen!”. In cases like that the enthusiasm is noted and fully appreciated, but don’t be surprised when I am softening the boisterousness a little in the Dublin Event Guide (for Free Events).<\/p>\n

This week it was a “Dine in Dublin” listing<\/a> (run by dublintown.ie ) that made me giggle: On Tuesday an nice event takes place in the context of Dine in Dublin, when a Luas tram will be at the St. Stephen’s Green Luas stop and food samples from three restaurants will be served to everybody in the area. Great idea nd great event, but the enthusiasm of the author of the listing made it a little bigger than you would have expected and called it a “a once in a life time dining experience”. ;-)<\/p>\n

Sure, STRICTLY speaking, this could be true. If next year OTHER restaurants do something like that again or if a Dublin Bus instead of Luas will be the stall that serves the food, then the event this year will be a once-off event forever. Or if a participant won’t survive tomorrow. :-O
\nBut we usually connect a different meaning with “a once in a life time dining experience” and – while the three restaurants will most likely serve really nice tasting food – eating a little food sample on the street of Dublin might not be seen by everyone as a “once in a life time dining experience”.<\/p>\n

Maybe tooooo much enthusiasm!? …but it was of the well meaning sort! :-)<\/p>\n<\/div>\n
