What a month! Last week we reached the great number of 23,000 subscribers, this week we arrived at a huge 55,000 Facebook Likes and next week I will send you the 400th Dublin Event Guide (for Free Events). Impressive – if I may say so – records week after week.<\/p>\n

No more Stena Ferries to Dun Laoghaire<\/h2>\n

It was a withdrawal in many small steps, but now the decision has been made and Stena Ferries, the only ferry company that still used Dun Laoghaire port for their route to the UK has announced that they will NOT use Dun Laoghaire any longer. I would say it was not that much of a surprise to the Councillors in Dun Laoghaire but they seemingly were still very shocked. Because the port Dublin Port is so close it just doesn’t make any sense for a ferry company to keep both bases.<\/p>\n

This exhibition is featuring watercolours and sketches by Roisin Murphy of the glasshouses of the National Botanic Gardens with particular attention to the work of the master iron founder Richard Turner (1798-1881).
\nTurner was highly sought after for his works with wrought and cast iron and glass. He is responsible for the iconic Curvilinear Range of glasshouses in Glasnevin as well as the glasshouses in the Winter Gardens in Regent’s Park, London and the Palm Houses in Belfast and The Royal Botanic Gardens, Kew.

In 1917 the British Ministry of Information commissioned several well-known British artists to produce a series of images on different aspects of the war effort. The aim was to encourage a war-weary public and raise support for the war effort. The images illustrate some of the changing attitudes at the time such as the role of women in the war, the industry of war and the casualties of war.<\/p>\n

The lithographs were divided into \u201cEfforts\u201d with nine artists producing six lithographs each on different aspects of the war effort, including Christopher Wynne Nevinson, William Rothenstein and Claude Shepperson. A further twelve artists were commissioned to produce a single image representing the \u201cIdeals\u201d for which the war was fought. These included Augustus John, Frank Brangwyn, George Clausen, Edmund Dulac, Charles Ricketts and Charles Shannon.<\/p>\n

Many of these artists are also represented in the collection of the Hugh Lane Gallery.<\/p>\n

Through the recollection of his own experience witnessing the winter solstice at Newgrange, and numerous visits to ancient sites throughout his life and travels, he questions the power such antiquated relics hold over us today.<\/p>\n

“The group exhibition shows the diverse practices of recipients of the UCD Science Artist in Residence Award. UCD Art in Science is a dynamic practice based programme that brings artists and scientists from undergraduate to professional levels, together in collaborative work. Since the pilot residency in 2012, the artists in residence have engaged with scientists in neuroscience, cognitive science, marine biology, plant biology, geophysics, paleobotany, advanced optical imaging, spectroscopy and astronomy. Their conversations have led to an inspiring body of work, through a mutual openness to communicating across the traditional boundaries of the disciplines. The diversity of the work reflects the open and dynamic nature of the project and includes, sculpture, installation, painting, drawing, video and performances. We will also launch our programme of public events and publication to accompany the exhibition.”<\/p>\n

Family Workshop – Irish Design 2015<\/h2>\n

Irish Design 2015 is inviting to a series of Family Day Design Workshops in their Design Hub @ Dublin Castle.<\/p>\n

The workshops encourage creative thinking, help to build dexterity and introduce children to new design\/craft skills through playful experimentation with materials, techniques and ideas.<\/p>\n

On alternate Saturdays of every month young makers and their families are invited to the ID2015 Design Hub in Dublin Castle, to take part in hands-on design and crafting workshops which begin with a tour of the gallery, specially designed to get you in the mood for creating.<\/p>\n

The 60 minute hand-on workshops are designed for 5+ children with parents \/ guardians. The 10:30 session is suitable for 5-8 years and the 12:00 session is more advanced for 9-13 years.<\/p>\n

Calories printed on all menus in restaurants soon?
\n<\/strong><\/p>\n

Leo Varadkar is determined to make us healthier, possibly not because he cares so much more than previous health ministers but because he sees that the shortage of hospital beds will probably NEVER get sorted in Ireland, so if you have too many sick people for the available beds, you have to try to make them all healthier asap. That way you don’t have to add any beds, but it seems as if all is fine in A&E.<\/p>\n

The newest madness is that all restaurants and takeaways will have to print calorie information on all menus. At first I thought that this is not a bad idea at all, but when you start thinking about the details and implications it becomes ABSOLUTELY mad. Let me give you a few examples:<\/p>\n

1) I have never been in a proper restaurant where my portion was EXACTLY the same as my neighbours. Because pieces of meat and vegetables etc grow and are cut in slightly different ways it is virtually impossible for a restaurant owner to be accurate all the time. So he\/she is then always with one food in illegal territory!<\/p>\n

2) Calorie information is helpful for people that already are aware of the implications of eating high calorific food, but unfortunately there is some connection between social level and obesity. So, the people that don’t have the money to make better food choices or don’t understand the exact consequences will never benefit from the calorie information.<\/p>\n

3) It is totally unclear how a restaurant that regularly changes the menu will be able to maintain accurate information. Absolutely accurate information costs quite a bit of money, so restaurants will GUESS the calories. Is that really a good solution?<\/p>\n

These are just three issues and there are lots more, but especially the first one alone renders the whole idea unpracticable because the information will ALWAYS be grossly unreliable.<\/p>\n
