We are now more than 23,000 people who have subscribed to the Dublin Event Guide (for Free Events). In recent weeks the growth has been slower than before Christmas, but we made it to 23,000 now and I am very happy about that. Mind you, the declared goal is 50,000, so there is still a good distance to travel until we arrive there, but with your help, we will faster than expected! :-)<\/a><\/p>\n

I don’t like talking about the money side, because I hate begging for donations, but sometimes I have to mention it. The weak Euro creates increased pressure and that will probably stay. In the last few months the cost, which are charged in Dollar have steadily increased so that now the monthly cost is at EUR 190. …and last month I only got EUR 90 of donations. Ouch!<\/a><\/p>\n

The Dublin Event Guide (for Free Events) only exists because you told other people about it and because a few generous people support it with donations. Keep doing exactly that, please! This section is intended to provide some help in picking and choosing from the huge number of events by sharing with you what I will\/might or would do. This is not a “best of…” list and if an event is not listed here, it by no means implies that the event is not interesting. Instead my “picks” are just based on my personal preferences. All events mentioned here are described in detail further down.<\/em><\/p>\n

This weekend I suggest that you give Trad Music a chance. Go to at least ONE event, maybe on the Music Trail, so that you have experienced that again. In previous years there was an outdoor stage in Temple Bar for the Tradfest, but with the current temperatures it is probably better that there is none this year.<\/a><\/p>\n

In the evening on Saturday there are a good few gigs and if you have never heard them, go to see Soulpower, they are really really good. On Sunday the very last (for ever!) Sunday Roast Gig Night will take place. Don’t miss it if you want to celebrate the end of this event. The American Super Bowl will start later that evening and will run until approx. 03:00 and lots of pubs open for it this year.<\/a><\/p>\n

On Wednesday another First Wednesday is taking place: A day where admission charges at OPW owned sites are waived. Dublin Castle and Kilmainham Gaol are two of the sites in Dublin.<\/a><\/div>\n

Dublin Ships – Public Art Installation<\/h2>\n

“Dublin Ships” by by Cliona Harmey is a new public art installation that will be unveiled by Dublin City and the Dublin Port Company on Tuesday 03 Feb and it will stay in place for approx. 6 months. The installation will be on the Scherzer Bridges, the small and nowadays unused road bridges on North Wall Quay.<\/a><\/p>\n

The installation brings the movements of the ships in Dublin Port to life. The artwork is generated from live electronic signals (Automatic Identification System) which track the arrival and departure of each ship in Dublin Port. The name of the ship is then transmitted in real-time to two large LED screens facing towards the city, and remains illuminated in black and white until the next ship either arrives in or leaves the port.<\/a><\/p>\n

Some would wonder if this is art or if it is just a ship identifier in the same way as your SatNav in the car is a map system, and not necessarily a piece of art. But maybe the fact that the ships system at Scherzer Bridge doesn’t really have a practical use and that there is no real need for it confirms the art claim?<\/a><\/div>\n<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n

Bicycle hangars – Dublin City needs your opinion<\/h2>\n

Dublin City has installed the first bike hangar on Francis Street. Interesting idea and it might be the only workable solution against the crazy rate of bike theft in Dublin.<\/a><\/p>\n

But it only takes six bikes and you have to pay EUR 38 per year and it takes away already sparse car park spaces (mind you, that is probably not the biggest concern for cyclists). So now Dublin City is looking for your opinion.<\/a><\/p>\n

The trial in Francis Street will last for 3 months and then all the gathered opinions will be used to decide if more hangars should be rolled out. Saturday is the last day of this exhibition for another year:<\/a><\/p>\n

The “Vaughan Bequest” is a collection of 31 watercolours and drawings by Joseph Mallord William Turner (1775-1851). The collection spans Turner\u2019s early topographical scenes and expressive images from his later European tours.<\/a><\/p>\n

Henry Vaughan, the English collector who bequeathed these works, died unmarried in 1899, aged 90. He divided his Turner watercolours between the national galleries in London, Dublin and Edinburgh. <\/a><\/p>\n

His bequest to the National Gallery of Ireland stipulated that the drawings should be exhibited to the public, free of charge, each January when the light is at its lowest level. The Gallery continues to adhere to the conditions of Vaughan\u2019s bequest by showing these luminous watercolours for one month only. The exhibition this year will display the watercolours and drawings in their original frames.<\/a><\/p>\n

Efforts and Ideals: Prints of the First World War<\/h2>\n

In 1917 the British Ministry of Information commissioned several well-known British artists to produce a series of images on different aspects of the war effort. The aim was to encourage a war-weary public and raise support for the war effort. The images illustrate some of the changing attitudes at the time such as the role of women in the war, the industry of war and the casualties of war.<\/a><\/p>\n

The lithographs were divided into \u201cEfforts\u201d with nine artists producing six lithographs each on different aspects of the war effort, including Christopher Wynne Nevinson, William Rothenstein and Claude Shepperson. A further twelve artists were commissioned to produce a single image representing the \u201cIdeals\u201d for which the war was fought. These included Augustus John, Frank Brangwyn, George Clausen, Edmund Dulac, Charles Ricketts and Charles Shannon.<\/a><\/p>\n

Many of these artists are also represented in the collection of the Hugh Lane Gallery.<\/a><\/p>\n

In his solo exhibition “A Voodoo free Phenomenon” for the Project Arts Centre, Garrett Phelan explores the power and influence that cultural traditions and artefacts have on the contemporary psyche.<\/a><\/p>\n

Through the recollection of his own experience witnessing the winter solstice at Newgrange, and numerous visits to ancient sites throughout his life and travels, he questions the power such antiquated relics hold over us today.<\/a><\/p>\n

“Welcome Disturbances” is a group exhibition of new work by Cindy Cummings, David Stalling, Sofie Loscher, Maeve O\u2019 Connor, Emma Finucan, Siobhan McDonald, Mark Cullen. It is curated by Sheena Barrett and Emer O\u2019Boyle.<\/a><\/p>\n

“The group exhibition shows the diverse practices of recipients of the UCD Science Artist in Residence Award. UCD Art in Science is a dynamic practice based programme that brings artists and scientists from undergraduate to professional levels, together in collaborative work. Since the pilot residency in 2012, the artists in residence have engaged with scientists in neuroscience, cognitive science, marine biology, plant biology, geophysics, paleobotany, advanced optical imaging, spectroscopy and astronomy. Their conversations have led to an inspiring body of work, through a mutual openness to communicating across the traditional boundaries of the disciplines. The diversity of the work reflects the open and dynamic nature of the project and includes, sculpture, installation, painting, drawing, video and performances. We will also launch our programme of public events and publication to accompany the exhibition.”<\/a><\/p>\n

Belvedere College Art Department is inviting to a 2-day exhibition on Sat 31 Jan and Sun 01 Feb which will feature art works created by past and present students and artists from the wider Belvedere College Community. The work will be showcased in Belvedere House, one of the finest Georgian buildings in Dublin. <\/a><\/p>\n

There are contributions from current pupils, graduates who are studying Art, Craft and Design at third level and those who have pursued their careers in the Visual Arts, alongside work from other artists. The exhibition will showcase the work of a number of notable past pupils such as Harry Clarke, sculptor Patrick Campbell, Film director Se\u00e1n Branigan, Architects Sam Stephenson, Michael Scott and David Leech, designers Alan Aboud and Dermot Flynn, members of the RHA Geraldine O\u2019Neill, Thomas Ryan and Se\u00e1n O\u2019 Sullivan. <\/a><\/p>\n

The collection will feature over 120 artworks including paintings, drawings, prints, graphic design, sculptural pieces, architectural designs, film and jewellery. All in the beautiful surroundings of Michael Stapleton\u2019s ornate stucco decoration. The exhibition marks the opening of the recently refurbished building, Belvedere House. <\/a><\/div>\n

In addition there is a “Music Trail” in 14 pubs in Temple Bar with free trad music from Wednesday until Sunday.<\/a><\/p>\n

The festival is hugely popular and ALL events will book out, so check availability asap if you want to go any of the events.<\/a><\/p>\n

Another protest against Water Charges takes place on Saturday. Meeting points are Heuston Station and Connolly Station and a march along the Liffey (on both sides) will follow. It is not clear what will happen when all participants reach O’Connell Bridge, because the organisers point out that there will be “no stage, no speeches and no concert”.<\/a><\/p>\n

On Saturday and Sunday (14:30-16:30), The Ark in Temple Bar is inviting families to an Uilleann Pipes Demonstration with Na P\u00edobair\u00ed Uilleann (NPU), the Society of Uilleann Pipers. This is a Drop-In activity.<\/a><\/p>\n

Join pipe makers and players and see how Uilleann Pipes are made \u2013 starting from the surprising beginnings of just a few small pieces of wood. Learn about the craft of making these instruments, their fascinating history and watch pipe reeds being made live in teh Ark. There are contributions from current pupils, graduates who are studying Art, Craft and Design at third level and those who have pursued their careers in the Visual Arts, alongside work from other artists. The exhibition will showcase the work of a number of notable past pupils such as Harry Clarke, sculptor Patrick Campbell, Film director Se\u00e1n Branigan, Architects Sam Stephenson, Michael Scott and David Leech, designers Alan Aboud and Dermot Flynn, members of the RHA Geraldine O\u2019Neill, Thomas Ryan and Se\u00e1n O\u2019 Sullivan.<\/a><\/p>\n

The collection will feature over 120 artworks including paintings, drawings, prints, graphic design, sculptural pieces, architectural designs, film and jewellery. Join pipe makers and players and see how Uilleann Pipes are made \u2013 starting from the surprising beginnings of just a few small pieces of wood. A whole range of pubs in Dublin will show the American Football Super Bowl this year, Some years ago, there were only two or three and I remember that one of them even kicked out their guests beause the game ran later than they had expected! This year the list of pubs showing it is as long as your arm. Most places don’t charge for admission and if a pub wants to charge you for admission make sure that you check that they provide adequate food or drink for free as part of the deal.<\/a><\/p>\n

The game between the New England Patriots and the Seattle Seahawks will start at 23:30 and will be finished up to 4 hours later.<\/a><\/p>\n

Entry charges at nearly all OPW sites are waived once a month. The Office of Public Works (OPW) wants to encourage people to visit the historic sites that it manages and has therfore started this initiative in 2011.<\/a><\/p>\n

Most OPW owned sites can already be visited for free, but the sites that normally charge a fee will be free every first Wednesday as well. In the (extended) Greater Dublin Area this means you can visit the following sites for free:
+ The Casino, Marino (closed from 01 Nov-13 March)
+ Dublin Castle, State Apartments
+ Kilmainham Gaol

From Bolivia to Ireland, the struggle to ensure that water is kept in public hands has sparked mass protest movements, centred on resistance from local communities. This talk will draw on the experience of one community’s struggle in the Global South (El Alto, Bolivia) and relate it to the Irish movement against water charges.<\/a><\/p>\n

The evening will start with the film screening of the documentary “Water Rising” which focuses on the struggle against water privatisation in Bolivia. This will be followed by a panel discussion. <\/a><\/p>\n

Comhl\u00e1mh is an organisation of development workers, volunteers and activists who work together to achieve a just and equitable world.<\/a><\/p>\n

ActionAid and AkiDwA will host a free screening of the documentary “A Handful of Ash” to mark International Day of Zero Tolerance to FGM (Female Gen ital Mutilation) on Friday. The screening will be followed by a short panel discussion.<\/a><\/p>\n

AkiDwA will also launch the first Information Guide for Education Professionals in Ireland on FGM on that evening.<\/a><\/p>\n

In 2010 Kurdish film director Nabaz Ahmad together with Shara Amin, travelled through Kurdistan to record “A Handful of Ash”, a documentary about FGM in the region. The film approaches the subject respectfully and carefully through different women\u2019s testimonials. Shortly after watching the documentary, the Kurdish parliament outlawed the practice. Since then, the number of girls being mutilated in Kurdistan has fallen by over 60%, an incredible success.<\/a><\/p>\n

The “Halloween Festival of Gothic Horrors” is a yearly festival organised by Howard Linnane and as an extension to that festival, Howard also runs events that celebrate some of the important “creators” of Gothic Horror.<\/a><\/p>\n

Gothic writer Sheridan Le Fanu, who was born in Dublin on 28 August 1814, died on 07 Feb 1873 and to mark the 142nd anniversary of his death, Howard will run a mini-festival with events on Thursday 05 Feb, Friday 06 Feb and then on Sat 07 Feb.<\/a><\/p>\n

The events will take the form of literary readings and film screenings and it will most likely take place in the Central Hotel and possibly also The Bleeding Horse.

ARENA is the RT\u00c9 Radio 1 arts programme with reviews and news, live acts and recorded performances, interviews etc about arts in Ireland. The programme is presented by Se\u00e1n Rocks and Arena will be in Farmleigh House on 12 Feb to record a show in front of a live audience.<\/a><\/p>\n

You can be part of that life audience and see how the programme is created. If you are interested, send an e-mail to farmleighinfo@opw.ie with the subject “A Night with Arena” and your name will be entered in the draw for two free tickets per winner. (Only winners will be notified.)<\/a><\/p>\n

Dublin Mountains Partnership – Guided Walks<\/h2>\n

Every month the Dublin Mountain Partnership runs free guided walks in the Dublin Mountains on some Saturdays or Sundays during the month. The walks have varying difficulty and duration and the details can be found on the Dublin Mountain Partnership website: http:\/\/www.dublinmountains.ie\/news\/upcoming_events\/?no_cache=1<\/a><\/p>\n

The next walks take place on 17, 18, 24 January and on 01 February.<\/a><\/p>\n

Irish Politicians – A shower of idiots?
<\/strong><\/p>\n

Politicians in every country seem to be a special breed. The amount of scandals we read\/hear about can’t just be because they are more in the public eye than others, there must be more to it.<\/a><\/p>\n

Maybe many of them only became politicians because they are scheming, sometimes corrupt, maybe not so bright shower of underperformers in other areas of life?<\/a><\/p>\n

Ireland seems to have its fair share of dubious specimens in public offices and in the Dail and we find them in all the parties, but one special case seems to be Michael Lowry from Tipperary. He was once a Chairman of Fine Gael and was a Minister for Transport, Energy and Communications for the short period of 1994-1996. But he seems to be dodgy as hell as even the Moriarty Tribunal found and was barred from Fine Gael after even they found him unsuitable. Shockingly he got re-elected into the Dail by the people of Tipperary North (as an Independent candidate) at every election since 1996, and it makes you wonder about the Tipperary North crowd as well.<\/a><\/p>\n

Many think Lowry more belongs into a prison than into the national parliament, but maybe the line is thin between the suitable location for more than one TD.<\/a><\/p>\n

If anybody ever thought, though, that Lowry is suited in the slightest to represent the people of Ireland, I seriously hope they will re-think this again because this is what happened during last week:
Lowry sent a note to the Taoiseach Enda Kenny to reappoint Valerie O’Reilly to the board of the National Transport Authority. We don’t know what got him to give that recommendation, but he claims that Valerie O’Reilly asked him to do that for her. (Unfortunately that doesn’t throw a good light on Valerie O’Reilly, but let’s not go there!)
I am sure that recommendations of that sort are a daily thing and in the Irish system where it is most important WHO you know in your move to an influential position, it is a very “normal” thing.<\/p>\n

But what was Lowry thinking when he wrote “Taoiseach, could you please consider Valerie O’Reilly to the Board of NTA. A woman, bright, intelligent and not bad looking either! Michael Lowry”<\/a><\/p>\n

Read that second sentence again! – I’d say you have to be exceptionally dim and utterly unprofessional to measure a Board members suitability in that way AND you have to be even dimmer to write this in a recommendation.<\/a><\/p>\n

We can hope that the people of Tipperary North (and especially the women there) reward Lowry appropriately at the next election, but they happily accepted all his dodgyness in the last 19 years, so maybe there is no hope for them…and for us!?<\/a><\/div>\n
