Lots of free events again. And the first big event of the year is the Temple Bar Trad Fest that starts this Wednesday. It will be interesting to see how the big events this year turn out. For example, will the Street Performance World Championship, or as it is now called, the City Spectacular get the sponsorship that they need after Laya Healthcare was taken over by AIG? And what about all these other events that need money from external sources? Will we maybe have to settle for smaller events and forget about the big free festivals? No big event has been announced yet.<\/p>\n

This weekend you could go to the Dublin Flea Market on Sunday and apart from that, I suggest that you select a museum that you have never been or not been for a long time.<\/p>\n

There is the National Museum (Kildare Street and Collins Barracks), the Natural Museum (Merrion Street), the National Gallery (Clare Street), the Hugh Lane Gallery (Parnell Square). Pick one of them!! Ohh, museums and galleries are not your thing? Then DEFINITELY go to one of them and try to go with an open mind. If you find something interesting in a museum depends in my opinion totally on how you approach it. Bring ALL your curiosity with you and if in general museums are a bit of a problem for you, then start with the National Museum in Collins Barrack this week!! Irish Design 2015 is a series of events this year about all aspects of Design. The events are organised by the Design & Crafts Council Ireland. J.M.W. Turner – The Vaughan Bequest – National Gallery<\/h2>\n

The “Vaughan Bequest” is a collection of 31 watercolours and drawings by Joseph Mallord William Turner (1775-1851). The collection spans Turner\u2019s early topographical scenes and expressive images from his later European tours.<\/p>\n

Henry Vaughan, the English collector who bequeathed these works, died unmarried in 1899, aged 90. He divided his Turner watercolours between the national galleries in London, Dublin and Edinburgh.<\/p>\n

His bequest to the National Gallery of Ireland stipulated that the drawings should be exhibited to the public, free of charge, each January when the light is at its lowest level. The Gallery continues to adhere to the conditions of Vaughan\u2019s bequest by showing these luminous watercolours for one month only. The exhibition this year will display the watercolours and drawings in their original frames.<\/p>\n

The NCAD Community Garden Farm was founded in January 2014 by the NCAD Students\u2019 Union in partnership with community gardener Tony Lowth. Since its inception, it has provided the skills, tools and space to turn raw materials such as land, compost, metal and wood into the resources needed for intensive growing. Stretching from Thomas Street to Oliver Bond Street, the brown-field site next door to the National College of Art and Design has been transformed into the largest food-growing garden farm in Dublin City Centre, producing seasonal vegetables, salad ingredients and fruit. The work, which is bathed in silences, investigates and plays with ideas of subtle representations and perceptions, its relationship to text, sound, touch, taste, smell, senses most associated with memory. In his solo exhibition “A Voodoo free Phenomenon” for the Project Arts Centre, Garrett Phelan explores the power and influence that cultural traditions and artefacts have on the contemporary psyche.<\/p>\n

Through the recollection of his own experience witnessing the winter solstice at Newgrange, and numerous visits to ancient sites throughout his life and travels, he questions the power such antiquated relics hold over us today.<\/p>\n

“The group exhibition shows the diverse practices of recipients of the UCD Science Artist in Residence Award. UCD Art in Science is a dynamic practice based programme that brings artists and scientists from undergraduate to professional levels, together in collaborative work. Since the pilot residency in 2012, the artists in residence have engaged with scientists in neuroscience, cognitive science, marine biology, plant biology, geophysics, paleobotany, advanced optical imaging, spectroscopy and astronomy. Their conversations have led to an inspiring body of work, through a mutual openness to communicating across the traditional boundaries of the disciplines. The diversity of the work reflects the open and dynamic nature of the project and includes, sculpture, installation, painting, drawing, video and performances. We will also launch our programme of public events and publication to accompany the exhibition.”<\/p>\n

Behind the Scenes is a Community Day at the Mermaid Arts Centre with guided tours to show you what you normally wouldn’t see!<\/p>\n

Do you wonder what goes on in-between shows, or what artists in residence do when in the theatre? On this day you are invited to come back stage and meet the new artists in residence.<\/p>\n

Mermaid\u2019s Technical Manager, Eoin Fegan will give two tours allowing access to all areas (behind the scenes, dressing rooms, back stage and control room), giving an insight into how an arts centre and theatre operates. The tours are free but booking is is required via the website below.<\/p>\n

You will also meet the artists in residence “The Company”, an ensemble of three theatre makers: Jose (Miguel Jimenez), Rob (McDermott), and Nyree (Yergainharsian). The Company have been invited to work in Mermaid for a week with the designer Stephen Dodd to research and develop a new theatre piece about Nyree\u2019s sister who plans her live meticulously but then was diagnosed with a rare cancer of the blood. The Company will give a showing of their work in progress at 18:30. Seats are free but booking is strongly recommended via<\/p>\n

+ “Stars from the city: Getting started in night sky photography” by John Dolan and

“John Dolan’s talk is an introduction to photographing the night sky, showing what’s possible from a back garden in Dublin City. It shows some good examples of astrophotography from the web and encourages individuals to consider night-sky photography as a hobby. It focuses on the use of a camera on a fixed tripod to achieve good results, and shows a method of coping with the challenge of Dublin’s light pollution when it’s not possible to get to a dark site.”<\/p>\n

In addition there is a “Music Trail” in 14 pubs in Temple Bar with free trad music from Wednesday until Sunday.<\/p>\n

Airport Security – You can bring a knife again!
\n<\/strong><\/p>\n

Good news for your granny! There is a good chance that she will be allowed to keep the nail clippers if she takes a plane to go on holidays or visit relatives. And your pocket knife is safe as well as long as the blade is not longer than 6cm!!<\/p>\n

In a surprise development the airport security rules were significantly loosened some months ago. You are still now allowed to bring toy guns, harpoons, catapults, tasers, axes, hatchets, razor blades (!), box cutters, swords and sabres, BUT you are not allowed to bring knives and scissors on board of a plane again as long as the blade is less than 6cm long.<\/p>\n

It might appear to us odd that this is allowed again, but when you think about it, it is not odd at all, because there has never been a plane hijacking where nail clippers or scissors or mini-knives have been used, so it is off that the nail clipper had been classified as a dangerous weapon in the first place.<\/p>\n

AND it is also odd that you are now allowed to bring a (small) knife, but your bottle of water is still not allowed. This is odd because there has never been an attempt to use liquids to cause any harm on board and the alleged “terrorists” that had planned to use weed killer and other chemicals were all released with NO charge because the threat was invented by the British police.<\/p>\n

What an odd world we live in!<\/p>\n
