Interesting things happening in Dublin. Venues closing (Centre for Creative Practices), regular gigs terminating (Monday Echo and Crafty Monday at year end and now Sunday Roast has been announced to end), other venues not updating their events list (maybe because there is nothing happening!?). Is this the dooms day scenario that will bring all free events to an end?<\/p>\n

No, I don’t think so, BUT there is a re-alignment happening at the moment and new people need to enter the space and show their passion and ability.<\/p>\n

Having said that, overall there might be a few less events this year (but it is too early to tell!), however as a reader of the Dublin Event Guide (for Free Events), you will always be the one who knows what is going on and where these free gigs are. This section is intended to provide some help in picking and choosing from the huge number of events by sharing with you what I will\/might or would do. This is not a “best of…” list and if an event is not listed here, it by no means implies that the event is not interesting. Instead my “picks” are just based on my personal preferences. All events mentioned here are described in detail further down.<\/em><\/p>\n

Unfortunately a number of venues are not so good at the moment with updating their websites. The Mercantile and Sweeney’s, two of the main free gig venues still seem to be in hibernation and Whelan’s, who usually also have a fair share of free gigs, currently only runs non-free gigs. Could there be a significant change? Because the Sunday Roast, a super weekly event that gives new and rstablished performers a great chance to get on stage is closing down. This is at least the fourth regular event that has come to an end since the beginning of the year.<\/p>\n

You want to know where to go? Definitely the Science Gallery if you haven’t seen the “Blood” exhibition yet. It is closing next Friday. Apart from that? Well, there are a good few events, but not much that is outstanding. I will be in Ikea on Saturday and in the Science Gallery on Sunday. ;-)<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

A weekend singing workshop with international vocal coach Jasmin Martorell will take place in Sophia House. It is an intense and rewarding workshop suitable for non-singers to professionals.<\/p>\n

“With emphasis on breathing and vocal exercises, Jasmin\u2019s enthusiastic teaching and expert understanding of the vocal instrument give the participant the confidence and skill to develop their natural voice to its full potential. The work will be based on how to place your voice, how to breathe and how to reinforce the abdominal muscles, with development of the agility of vocal cords and awakening\/developing of the resonators. Participants will have the opportunity to work individually with Jasmin on a song of their choice.”<\/p>\n

Centre for Creative Practices to close :-(<\/h2>\n
\n

For the last 5 years, the Centre for Creative Practices in 15 Lower Pembroke Street was an important venue and supporter of art and music in Dublin. Exhibitions, Film Screenings, concerts and gigs were organised by the CFCP team and in addition the space was used by different organisations for their events. Due to the cost, many events couldn’t be free, but there were still plenty of free events and on top of that the CFCP was a very helpful sponsor of the “Dublin Event Guide (for Free Events)”.<\/p>\n

Many art organisations and venues were hit by a declining economy in the last few years and by reduced grants and subsidies that resulted. At the CFCP a different reason forces them to close and ironically it might be the improving economy that forced the end. The building they are currently in will be sold (probably due to higher price in the improving economy) and all tenants need to move out. As a consequence the space at 15 Pembroke Street will go and the CFCP will become homeless.<\/p>\n

On the positive side: Ian Oliver and Monika Sapielak are not running away and you can expect more interesting things from them in the future even if (for now) the CFCP will live under a bridge.<\/p>\n

The “Vaughan Bequest” is a collection of 31 watercolours and drawings by Joseph Mallord William Turner (1775-1851). The collection spans Turner\u2019s early topographical scenes and expressive images from his later European tours.<\/p>\n

Henry Vaughan, the English collector who bequeathed these works, died unmarried in 1899, aged 90. He divided his Turner watercolours between the national galleries in London, Dublin and Edinburgh.<\/p>\n

His bequest to the National Gallery of Ireland stipulated that the drawings should be exhibited to the public, free of charge, each January when the light is at its lowest level. The Gallery continues to adhere to the conditions of Vaughan\u2019s bequest by showing these luminous watercolours for one month only. The exhibition this year will display the watercolours and drawings in their original frames.<\/p>\n

BLOOD is the title of the Science Gallery exhibition that will run from 24 Oct – 23 Jan.<\/p>\n

25 exhibits explore the symbolic, scientific and strange nature of blood and there are certainly some “out there” contributions. For example the video and relics from a bio-art performance where an artist had a blood transfusion form a horse. Or a spoof brand that uses bloodstain-formed fashion accessories addressing the stigma about men strual blood.<\/p>\n

But there are quirky things as well, like the Jukebox that will guess your age by taking your pulse rate and playing a song from your teenage years. And there are some practical aspects: You can take a test that will determine your blood type and you can find out what happens to to donated blood in Ireland.<\/p>\n

An interesting exhibition, but different than what you have seen before in the Science Gallery and that is reflected by the recommendation that the exhibition is only suitable for over 15 year olds.<\/p>\n

If you are ok with the focus on this red substance that makes some of us a bit queasy when we think about it, you should definitely go to the exhibition (and bring an open mind ;-) ). But if blood makes your knees wobbly, then it might not be for you.<\/p>\n

This is your last chance to see the Science Gallery exhibition on a weekend before it closes on Friday:<\/p>\n

BLOOD is the title of the new Science Gallery exhibition that will run from 24 Oct – 23 Jan.<\/p>\n

25 exhibits explore the symbolic, scientific and strange nature of blood and there are certainly some “out there” contributions. For example the video and relics from a bio-art performance where an artist had a blood transfusion form a horse. Or a spoof brand that uses bloodstain-formed fashion accessories addressing the stigma about men strual blood.<\/p>\n

But there are quirky things as well, like the Jukebox that will guess your age by taking your pulse rate and playing a song from your teenage years. And there are some practical aspects: You can take a test that will determine your blood type and you can find out what happens to to donated blood in Ireland.<\/p>\n

An interesting exhibition, but different than what you have seen before in the Science Gallery and that is reflected by the recommendation that the exhibition is only suitable for over 15 year olds.<\/p>\n

If you are ok with the focus on this red substance that makes some of us a bit queasy when we think about it, you should definitely go to the exhibition (and bring an open mind ;-) ). But if blood makes your knees wobbly, then it might not be for you.<\/p>\n

The “Dublin Sketchers” is an informal group of (hobby) artists who go somewhere different in Dublin every Sunday (e.g. National Museum, Maritime Museum, Dublin Flea Market, Farmleigh, Botanic Gardens, Dublin Castle, Science Gallery, …), sketch for one to two hours and then meet up for coffee afterwards and discuss their sketches.<\/p>\n

There are some hugely talented people among them and it is a great idea to meet up with others who have the same hobby. Temple Bar Trad Fest – Pre-Booking required!<\/h2>\n

From 28 Jan until 01 Feb the 10th Temple Bar Trad Fest will take place. There are lots of events throughout the 5 days. There are non-free headline gigs, but then there are also lots and lots of free ticketed events and on top of that 14 pubs in Temple Bar will have free trad music during the festival.<\/p>\n

The festival is hugely popular and ALL events will book out, bit at the moment it is still looking relatively good, so if you hurry, you can get tickets for some great events.<\/p>\n

Thanks to Mary F, who is a Dublin Event Guide reader and regularly lets me know about interesting free events, I can list all the free events with individual links, so that you don’t have to search on the website http:\/\/www.templebartrad.com\/events\/<\/a> but nearly all the work is done for you. Behind The Scenes – Mermaid Arts Centre Bray<\/h2>\n

Behind the Scenes is a Community Day at the Mermaid Arts Centre with guided tours to show you what you normally wouldn’t see!<\/p>\n

Do you wonder what goes on in-between shows, or what artists in residence do when in the theatre? On this day you are invited to come back stage and meet the new artists in residence.<\/p>\n

Mermaid\u2019s Technical Manager, Eoin Fegan will give two tours allowing access to all areas (behind the scenes, dressing rooms, back stage and control room), giving an insight into how an arts centre and theatre operates. The tours are free but booking is is required via the website below.<\/p>\n

You will also meet the artists in residence “The Company”, an ensemble of three theatre makers: Jose (Miguel Jimenez), Rob (McDermott), and Nyree (Yergainharsian). The Company have been invited to work in Mermaid for a week with the designer Stephen Dodd to research and develop a new theatre piece about Nyree\u2019s sister who plans her live meticulously but then was diagnosed with a rare cancer of the blood. The Company will give a showing of their work in progress at 18:30. Seats are free but booking is strongly recommended via<\/p>\n

A free hip hop dance fitness workshop for the 13+ age group will take place next Saturday in the Loft of the Taney Parish Centre in Dundrum. It is a fun class where students will learn dance routines to contemporary music while getting fit. Because it already starts at 11:30, I am including it here this week already.<\/div>\n

Dublin Mountains Partnership – Guided Walks<\/h2>\n

Every month the Dublin Mountain Partnership runs free guided walks in the Dublin Mountains on some Saturdays or Sundays during the month. World Leaders at protest march in Paris!? …or maybe not!!
\n<\/strong><\/p>\n

When I heard after the attacks on Charlie Hebdo in Paris that World Leaders from all over the world would be in in Paris for the protest march against the attacks, the first thing I thought was “What a high risk for the individual politicians and what a security nightmare for the police!”
\nDo you remember when Barack Obama and soon after the Queen were in Dublin and manhole covers were welded shut, snipers were positioned on roofs and every step was planned and discussed for weeks in advance?
\nIn Paris they had a 2 day warning of more than 40 state leaders arriving to walk on the open street surrounded by high buildings.<\/p>\n

But after hearing it, I didn’t think about it much more and on that Sunday evening I read that 1.7 mio people marched and among them were the more than 40 world leaders from the French president Francois Hollande, via the German Chancellor Angela Merkel and the UK Prime Minister David Cameron to the Israeli and Palestinian leaders walking just a few people from each other.<\/p>\n

A momentous event and while not without controversy, especially when you consider that not a single world leader marched in solidarity of the 2000 Nigerians who got killed in the same week the 18 people died in Paris, this was a loud (albeit most likely ignored) signal to any terrorist.<\/p>\n

But I have to admit that I felt a little cheated when I found this article<\/a> with that remarkable picture of the world leaders FAKING a big protest march.<\/p>\n

Yes, I know it doesn’t really matter if they marched or if they didn’t march and it doesn’t really matter either if they were in the middle of the crowd or a good bit away from them, but the media definitely intentionally or uncritically misled us when the previous pictures<\/a> seemed to indicate that these world leaders were the front row of a massive march.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n
