The first full working week of the year is over and it wasn’t as bad as we had expected. :-)<\/p>\n

And with that in mind, we might as well try another week. What do you think? I know, I know, that’s pushing it a bit, but I am confident that you can do it!<\/p>\n

The good news is, that the events are coming back. We already have a significant increase in comparison to last week and the trend will continue. And another good thing: A number of regular events ended with the New Year because the organiser wanted to try new things. But already this week, a number of gaps are filled by new events emerging. The Anseo Comedy Night is one of these new events despite the fact that it is not new at all. The Anseo Comedy event has been around for years, but from now on it is a free (donations appreciated) event. Show your support and go to events like that, the organisers need you!<\/p>\n

And if you check the daily messages at www.facebook.com\/DublinEventGuide<\/a>, you know that the Dublin Event Guide needs you to: The Goal this year is to get from 54,000 Likes to 75,000 Likes and to increase the subscribers of the e-mail magazine by 5,000 to 28,000. Regular Events in the Dublin Event Guide (for Free Events)<\/h2>\n

Some of Dublin’s event organisers and venues are so great that they don’t just every now and then invite you to free events, but they run weekly free events. I include these as Regular Events in the weekly e-mail magazine and because there are many of these weekly events, I can’t check them every week. As a consequence it does happen that an event has been paused or cancelled and I don’t know about it.
\nIf you find out about such a change, PLEASE let me know so that I can update the listings and PLEASE don’t be upset with me for not knowing about it. (You can reach me at dublineventguide@gmail.com )<\/p>\n

The only alternative would be NOT to include free weekly events unless I get a confirmation every week form the event organiser and I am not sure if that is the better solution. (I will go for that option, if an event organiser has proven to be repeatedly unreliable and keeps forgetting to notify me about cancellations and pauses in their event schedule.)<\/p>\n

Bewley’s Cafe in Grafton Street closed!<\/h2>\n
\n

It is sad news, but Bewley’s Cafe in Grafton Street, a Dublin institution, has closed. I wanted to tell you today that you should hurry to experience it one last time, but unfortunately it too late. I understand the Cafe has closed already and has made all 140 workers there redundant.
\nInitially the Cafe is just closing for a six month period for renovations, but when you read what is planned, you realise that the Bewley’s Cafe that we know has closed for good and will be replaced by a sad shadow of itself when\/if it reopens.
\nThe new Cafe will operate on the ground floor only and all the many upstairs areas will be closed, there won’t be any hot food anymore and the number of employees will be halved.
\nConsidering that the new cafe only has half the seating capacity but still needs to bring in enough money to pay the crazy rent of EUR 1.5m per year and with additional renovation cost of approx. EUR 1m, there are people that wonder if this is just the beginning of the end which could result in a complete closure.

Iveagh Markets will be redeveloped<\/h2>\n
\n

Great News about Iveagh Markets, which is was a food and clothes market near in Francis Street from 1906 until the early 1990s (or late 1980s?). After several attempts since 1993, 2015 seems to be the year when it finally will be redeveloped and it could open in 2017. The site includes the big market hall, Mother Redcaps, a pub that closed a few years ago, and seemingly some other adjacent buildings.
\nIt is great news that something is done about this historic building and the whole site because currently it is completely unused!
\nBut there are some downsides as well: The redevelopment will cost around EUR 90m and you can imagine that that money has to come back somehow, so instead of a super market similar to, for example, some Spanish markets in Madrid (http:\/\/www.mercadodesanmiguel.es\/<\/a>) or Barcelona (http:\/\/www.boqueria.info\/<\/a>), the emphasis for Iveagh Markets might be much more on the hotels that will also be built.
\nMartin Keane, who will re-develop the site, is the owner of Blooms Hotel and the pub St. Oliver John Gogarty, both in Temple Bar.

Comedy Music Panel Show – Audience Seats available<\/h2>\n

A new Comedy Music Panel Show for RTE2 is called ‘Hey-Ho Let’s Go’ and will be filmed from 18 January. Currently there are still some audience seats available (over 18 years only) and you could be in a TV audience and enjoy also the wine\/soft drink reception beforehand.<\/p>\n

RTE writes: “Presented by comedy impresario and air guitar fanatic Dermot Whelan, with two teams led by John Colleary, funny man and forgotten rockstar and Colin Murphy frustrated frontman and comic genius (their words not ours), this show is packed full of gags about gigs. The “Vaughan Bequest” is a collection of 31 watercolours and drawings by Joseph Mallord William Turner (1775-1851). The collection spans Turner\u2019s early topographical scenes and expressive images from his later European tours.<\/p>\n

Henry Vaughan, the English collector who bequeathed these works, died unmarried in 1899, aged 90. He divided his Turner watercolours between the national galleries in London, Dublin and Edinburgh.<\/p>\n

His bequest to the National Gallery of Ireland stipulated that the drawings should be exhibited to the public, free of charge, each January when the light is at its lowest level. The Gallery continues to adhere to the conditions of Vaughan\u2019s bequest by showing these luminous watercolours for one month only. The exhibition this year will display the watercolours and drawings in their original frames.<\/p>\n

“Studies on Shivering” is a part of a wider project by the artist Damir O?ko (HR). In this project, the artist creates a dialogue between film, poetry, musical scores, objects and drawing to explore a central theme; the shivering body as a metaphor for resistance and unrest. The title of the film in this exhibition, “TK”, comes from the phonetic description of the sound of teeth or stones clashing together. These types of sounds create a visceral, psycho-acoustic response in the listener and the effect is one of O?ko\u2019s central concerns.<\/p>\n

“Studies on Shivering” combines elements such as scores, collages, architectural intervention and collaborations to extend the normal cinematic space and to create a hybrid work in which film, research and poetry are equally weighted.<\/p>\n

BLOOD is the title of the new Science Gallery exhibition that will run from 24 Oct – 25 Jan.<\/p>\n

25 exhibits explore the symbolic, scientific and strange nature of blood and there are certainly some “out there” contributions. For example the video and relics from a bio-art performance where an artist had a blood transfusion form a horse. Or a spoof brand that uses bloodstain-formed fashion accessories addressing the stigma about men strual blood.<\/p>\n

But there are quirky things as well, like the Jukebox that will guess your age by taking your pulse rate and playing a song from your teenage years. And there are some practical aspects: You can take a test that will determine your blood type and you can find out what happens to to donated blood in Ireland.<\/p>\n

An interesting exhibition, but different than what you have seen before in the Science Gallery and that is reflected by the recommendation that the exhibition is only suitable for over 15 year olds.<\/p>\n

If you are ok with the focus on this red substance that makes some of us a bit queasy when we think about it, you should definitely go to the exhibition (and bring an open mind ;-) ). But if blood makes your knees wobbly, then it might not be for you.<\/p>\n

BLOOD is the title of the new Science Gallery exhibition that will run from 24 Oct – 25 Jan.<\/p>\n

25 exhibits explore the symbolic, scientific and strange nature of blood and there are certainly some “out there” contributions. For example the video and relics from a bio-art performance where an artist had a blood transfusion form a horse. Or a spoof brand that uses bloodstain-formed fashion accessories addressing the stigma about men strual blood.<\/p>\n

But there are quirky things as well, like the Jukebox that will guess your age by taking your pulse rate and playing a song from your teenage years. And there are some practical aspects: You can take a test that will determine your blood type and you can find out what happens to to donated blood in Ireland.<\/p>\n

An interesting exhibition, but different than what you have seen before in the Science Gallery and that is reflected by the recommendation that the exhibition is only suitable for over 15 year olds.<\/p>\n

If you are ok with the focus on this red substance that makes some of us a bit queasy when we think about it, you should definitely go to the exhibition (and bring an open mind ;-) ). But if blood makes your knees wobbly, then it might not be for you.<\/p>\n

First Fortnight is an Arts Festival that wants to challenge mental health prejudices through creative arts so that people find it easier to start a conversation about mental health.<\/p>\n

The festival will run from 01-14 Jan in Dublin and lots of different events are planned. Some of the events are free, others not. I will list here the free events, but I strongly suggest that you also have a look at the non-free events, if mental health and arts is of interest to you.<\/p>\n

The first free events is on Fri 02 Jan and will take place in the Octagonal Gallery of the City Assembly House, South William Street, Dublin 2.<\/p>\n

“I Have To Say, I Have To Say” explores suicide amongst migrants. The work stemmed from the death of the artist\u2019s former housemate, a Polish woman living in Ireland. Told through sculptural installation, video and performances, the work looks at the connections between Poland and Ireland,<\/p>\n

It was performed at the festival opening on 02 Jan and on 09 Jan and a last lunchtime performance (30 mins) is on 13 Jan at 13:00. Admission is free.<\/p>\n

The Royal College of Physicians in Ireland (RCPI) tweeted during the week:<\/p>\n

“Despite being classified by WHO as a group 1 carcinogen, health warnings on alcohol are not mandatory”

And when you think about that for a moment, it is indeed very odd.<\/p>\n

Tobacco is bad for you and we all know that. Cigarette packs are “decorated” with horrible pictures of the health effects of smoking. Cigarette Companies are not allowed to show their name anymore. Prices for cigarettes are through taxes kept as high as possible. Advertisement is forbidden and smoking in films or on TV is also completely banned.
\nWe don’t really know what effect these different measures have, but smoking (and smokers) are more and more marginalised, which will most likely result in a decrease in the number of smokers in the medium to longterm.<\/p>\n

Now let’s look at alcohol. Have you ever seen the smallest health warning on a beer or wine bottle? Could you imagine a picture of a alcohol destroyed liver on the label of a Champagne bottle? Taxes are mad high in comparison to other countries, but are seemingly not at all used to limit the attractiveness of drinking. The Dail has a thriving bar and alcohol advertisement is one of the biggest sponsors of sports clubs and sports events.<\/p>\n

You would definitely think that Tobacco is an absolute killer substance, but alcohol is totally harmless. Odd, isn’t it?<\/p>\n
