I hope you had a good start of the new year and I am wishing you a 2015 full of happiness, health and success and full of (free) events.<\/p>\n

Did you make your New Year’s resolutions? I keep telling people that making New Year’s resolutions is just setting yourself up for failure and that the right approach is to set goals, but for some these resolutions are part of the New Year’s Eve ritual. Have you made New Year’s Resolutions on New Year’s Eve? Did you write them down? Often New Year’s Resolutions are not effective and are forgotten by 15 Jan. But it is good to use the start of the new year to take stock and to make an effort to improve the aspects of your life that could do with improvements.<\/p>\n

The reason why they New Year’s Resolutions are broken so easily and so fast is because they are badly formulated. Most people don’t write them in positive language, don’t set clear deadlines and don’t make them measurable. A New Year’s Resolution of “I should get fitter.” or “I want to eat\/drink less.” is no help. Instead you need to define them clearer.<\/p>\n

Maybe youi thought that last week was the all-time low as far as events are concerned, but it got lower and for good reason. Due to the relatively long holidays over Christmas and New Year, all event organisers have stopped organising events and will only restart on Monday, so in that first full week of January it is very very quiet. Expect the full range of events again from the end of this week (around 09 January) and this week, just take it a little easier. Your body might appreciate it after the festivities and parties. ;-)<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

First Fortnight – Mental Health Festival<\/h2>\n
\n

Mental Health is a serious issue in Ireland and it is not enough discussed and brought to the light. For some reason, people in Ireland are very uncomfortable talking about Mental Health in general and depression and suicide in particular. As if not talking about it will make it go away. Some think that if you talk about suicide for example, you would introduce people that have not considered it to think about it more. But many others are of the opinion that only openly talking abut it will show the people that would consider it that there are ALWAYS better options.<\/p>\n

Luckily the First Fortnight Festival is bringing mental health to the light and are prepared to talk about everything. There are only a few free events and I have\/will have them listed in this week’s and next week’s Dublin Event Guide (for Free Events), but I recommend that you have a good look at the whole list of events. There are a lot of good events for you, no matter if you struggle with mental health issues or not.<\/p>\n

UTV Ireland on Air – First Uproar<\/h2>\n
\n

UTV Ireland is on air since 01 January and will be a regional variant of the UTV programme, which means that in Ireland “home-produced” programmes will replace some of the other scheduled programmes the non-Irish UTV will show. The first viewer uproar was created when a allegedly highly boring programme with Pat Kenny was transmitted on UTV Ireland in place of the movie “The Dark Knight”. See here<\/a>.<\/p>\n

RTE to spend your money on modernisation<\/h2>\n

In related news to the UTV Ireland launch, RTE is looking to modernise their equipment<\/a> and to spend between 1 and 3 million on that. Shouldn’t be much of a problem if they have the money and if they operated in a level playing field, but UTV and TV3 have to earn the money through advertisement while RTE takes it from you through the TV license charges and ALSO competes for advertisement income with the others. There is something wrong there!<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<\/tbody>\n<\/table>\n\n\n\n

J.M.W. Turner – The Vaughan Bequest – National Gallery<\/h2>\n

National Gallery, Clare Street, Dublin 2<\/p>\n

\n

The “Vaughan Bequest” is a collection of 31 watercolours and drawings by Joseph Mallord William Turner (1775-1851). The collection spans Turner\u2019s early topographical scenes and expressive images from his later European tours.<\/p>\n

Henry Vaughan, the English collector who bequeathed these works, died unmarried in 1899, aged 90. He divided his Turner watercolours between the national galleries in London, Dublin and Edinburgh.<\/p>\n

“Studies on Shivering” is a part of a wider project by the artist Damir O?ko (HR). In this project, the artist creates a dialogue between film, poetry, musical scores, objects and drawing to explore a central theme; the shivering body as a metaphor for resistance and unrest. The title of the film in this exhibition, “TK”, comes from the phonetic description of the sound of teeth or stones clashing together. These types of sounds create a visceral, psycho-acoustic response in the listener and the effect is one of O?ko\u2019s central concerns.<\/p>\n

“Studies on Shivering” combines elements such as scores, collages, architectural intervention and collaborations to extend the normal cinematic space and to create a hybrid work in which film, research and poetry are equally weighted.<\/p>\n

BLOOD is the title of the new Science Gallery exhibition that will run from 24 Oct – 25 Jan.<\/p>\n

25 exhibits explore the symbolic, scientific and strange nature of blood and there are certainly some “out there” contributions. For example the video and relics from a bio-art performance where an artist had a blood transfusion form a horse. Or a spoof brand that uses bloodstain-formed fashion accessories addressing the stigma about men strual blood.<\/p>\n

But there are quirky things as well, like the Jukebox that will guess your age by taking your pulse rate and playing a song from your teenage years. And there are some practical aspects: You can take a test that will determine your blood type and you can find out what happens to to donated blood in Ireland.<\/p>\n

An interesting exhibition, but different than what you have seen before in the Science Gallery and that is reflected by the recommendation that the exhibition is only suitable for over 15 year olds.<\/p>\n

If you are ok with the focus on this red substance that makes some of us a bit queasy when we think about it, you should definitely go to the exhibition (and bring an open mind ;-) ). But if blood makes your knees wobbly, then it might not be for you.<\/p>\n

BLOOD is the title of the new Science Gallery exhibition that will run from 24 Oct – 25 Jan.<\/p>\n

25 exhibits explore the symbolic, scientific and strange nature of blood and there are certainly some “out there” contributions. For example the video and relics from a bio-art performance where an artist had a blood transfusion form a horse. Or a spoof brand that uses bloodstain-formed fashion accessories addressing the stigma about men strual blood.<\/p>\n

But there are quirky things as well, like the Jukebox that will guess your age by taking your pulse rate and playing a song from your teenage years. And there are some practical aspects: You can take a test that will determine your blood type and you can find out what happens to to donated blood in Ireland.<\/p>\n

An interesting exhibition, but different than what you have seen before in the Science Gallery and that is reflected by the recommendation that the exhibition is only suitable for over 15 year olds.<\/p>\n

If you are ok with the focus on this red substance that makes some of us a bit queasy when we think about it, you should definitely go to the exhibition (and bring an open mind ;-) ). But if blood makes your knees wobbly, then it might not be for you.<\/p>\n

Nearly everyone has a song that gets you up when you\u2019re feeling down or that captures exactly how you\u2019re feeling right now. Music connects. First Fortnight will explore that connectivity with a unique event in St Stephen\u2019s Green.<\/p>\n

Take two people, two playlists and a pair of headphone splitters. As they walk together around the Green this randomly paired couple will share a moving musical experience of the songs that resonate with each of them. This is an exercise in breaking down barriers, experiencing indirectly shared emotions, movement and most of all music.<\/p>\n

You have to prepare a bit ofr this event (bring a four-song playlist on a music player), but it’s not complicated and all is explained in a FAQ via the website below. You also have to book for this event, but admission is free.<\/p>\n

First Fortnight is an Arts Festival that wants to challenge mental health prejudices through creative arts so that people find it easier to start a conversation about mental health.<\/p>\n

Every month the Dublin Mountain Partnership runs free guided walks in the Dublin Mountains on some Saturdays or Sundays (or this month on St. Stephen’s Day) during the month. Workwear Joggers! Arghh! – An Irish solution to an Irish problem??
\n<\/strong><\/p>\n

Browsing through the newest Aldi brochure I came across something that just screamed to be included in this This is Odd! section of the Dublin Event Guide. From 08 January, Aldi will sell what they describe as “Workwear Joggers” and what is essentially tracksuit bottoms equipped with a “ruler pocket, a “woven back patch pocket” and to top it all with “woven fastening kneepad pockets”. I haven’t lived in many countries, but outside Ireland, I never came across any self-respecting and serious handyman\/builder that wore tracksuit bottoms to work. Since Aldi Ireland’s product selection seems to be heavily influenced by the UK, I would expect that the same “Workwear Joggers” are sold in the UK, so maybe it is a Britihs\/Irish oddity, but it is definitely odd. If you are a professional in your field and need protection clothing (kneepads) would it not make a lot of sense to dress professional? Or do I show my age my expecting that? ;-)<\/p>\n

Either way, to me Workwear Joggers are just plain wrong and very very odd!!<\/p>\n
