The fact that the fern grew immediately and the bamboo didn’t do anything for years, and only then started growing and beautifying the forest culminated in statement by god: “Don’t compare yourself to others.”, he said. “The bamboo had a different purpose than the fern. Yet they both make the forest beautiful. Your time will come”, God said to me. “You will rise high”. If you didn’t get a chance to read the story, you can find it here again http://www.accomplishlife.com/articles/492/1/The-Fern-and-the-Bamboo/Page1.html

Many of you probably have heard of Paul Potts, the mobile phone sales man who appeared last year on Britain Got Talent and surprised and amazed everybody with his brilliant singing: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1k08yxu57NA Nobody thought he had any talent, but when his time came, she proved everybody wrong.

This season the TV show managed to find another similarly hear-warming story of the ugly duckling turning into a swan. This time the audience and judges were left speechless by a Susan Boyle from a small village. Her time came and she shined BIG: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9lp0IWv8QZY If you doubt yourself sometimes and wonder if your talents will ever be appreciated or discovered, watch these two videos and do NEVER give up!

Believe in your dreams and that your time will come, but be aware that you have to help Lady Luck a little – she might not find you otherwise. William Arthur Ward, a well known American inspirational speaker and author said “If you can imagine it, you can achieve it. – If you can dream it, you can become it.” But he said also “The pessimist complains about the wind; the optimist expects it to change; the realist adjusts the sails.” So adjust your sails if necessary and then go full speed forward!
[ad]
——-
Since I started writing the Event Guide new subscribers are joining the Event Guide Community every week in quite large numbers. I am fully aware that this would not happen without your help, without you all recommending it and telling your friends about it. And I really really appreciate your help. Unfortunately the recession is hitting even the Event Guide Community! Not in a financial or redundancy related way, but the effect of economic issues is that more and more people leave Ireland. In recent weeks at least 30 people sent me mails saying that they are leaving or have left Ireland and will therefore unfortunately not need the Event Guide any longer. It is a pity to loose members of the Event Guide Community, but it is unavoidable.

There is another downside, however, and I need your help with it. As a personal goal and to increase the impact this Event Guide will possibly have on Event Organisers, it is important to keep growing it and I had mentioned before that I would like to reach 5000 subscribers by October. You probably told all your friends and family about it by now – if not, please tell them! :-) But maybe you could let more people at work or in your gym or college/university know if you had the right tools. I want to help you. ;-) If you are in a college/gym/work place etc and there is a blackboard or similar in sight, I would very much appreciate if you could print out this A4 page
http://www.broighter.com/EventGuide_NewSubscribers.pdf maybe you even have a scissors to cut the contact labels at the bottom and then please hang it up in as many places as possible!! Every bit of help is appreciated! Spread the word and let people know about the Dublin Event Guide (for Free Events). Thanks!

—–
A huge thanks to Wanda J and Siv M-J who forwarded a donation to me this week. Going to free events saves you a LOT of money AND is good fun. True? ;-) But if you didn’t know about these free events you couldn’t go. True as well? In that case the question is what the value is of finding out about all the events. Do you agree that 1 Euro per month (which is just 25 cent per newsletter) is a very modest amount? It would be great if I could count on your 12 Euro per year!! Feel free to give more if you can, but please do seriously consider the 12 Euro.
To contribute you can transfer your donation directly to “Joerg Steegmueller, AIB, SortCode 93-36-78, AccountNo 03556043” or go donate using PayPal or your credit card by going “http ://tinyurl . com/68dmlq ” and just remove the three Spaces in the web address (I have to write it like this, otherwise Spam Checkers complain about the tinyurl address.)
Alternatively you can send a mail to me (dublineventguide@gmail.com) and we can arrange a different route for your donation. This Event Guide is a hobby and NOT a commercial enterprise, so I do need donations! But I spend more than 25 hours per week (for some people that is a half-day job!) on writing and researching it.

All events listed in this Event Guide are free of any admission charges or at least appear to be free unless otherwise stated. I try to find confirmation in all cases and do my best to double-check the information. However errors can happen and therefore no guarantee for correctness can be given.

______________________________
______Joerg’s Picks______________

Since this newsletter is getting longer and longer with all the free events available, this section is meant to provide some help in picking and choosing the events I will or would go to. This is not the “best of…” list and if an event is not listed here, it by no means implies that the event is not interesting. Instead my “picks” are just based on my personal preferences, so if it helps you I am glad, but feel free to ignore this section completely! :-) All events mentioned here are described in detail further down.

–Advertisement————————————
NEW ADVERTISEMENT OPPORTUNITIES IN EVENT GUIDE
If you want to let the Dublin Event Guide Community know about your products or services, you can do that now on a regular and repeated basis by advertising in the Event Guide. On Saturday I will probably leave Dublin behind for a day trip outside. On Sunday there is always the weekly Gospel Mass. Next week I will be very busy because I will be at a seminar from the Friday of next week (until Tuesday) and still need to prepare for it. But the Shackleton Talk in the RDS on Wednesday sounds very interesting and the Five Lamps Arts Festival during the week is worth a visit. From Wednesday the Cultivate Festival “Convergence 14” and from Thursday the Rathmines Arts Festival are hot contenders for a visit. ;-)

______________________________
______Competition______________

TOLTEC SELF MASTERY TALK – TICKET COMPETITION
On Wed 22 April from 19:00-21:00 Don Luis Molinar, an international teacher of Toltec Mastery, will be in Dublin for an introductory talk on Toltec Self Mastery.
Don Luis Molinar is a Master teacher in the Toltec tradition, an ancient path of self awareness and knowledge from Mexico. This teaching has been around for centuries in Mexico and went underground on the arrival of the Spanish into Mexico. It has subsequently been passed down from generation to generation until emerging in the late sixties with the writings of Carlos Castaneda and more recently with Don Miguel Ruiz (author of the books ‘The Four Agreements’ and ‘The Mastery of Love’) who received the teaching from his mother and grandmother. Don Luis was apprenticed by Don Miguel for many years and in 1992 Don Miguel initiated him to carry the ancient teaching of the Toltecs.
The Toltec teaching is not a religion but a system of self awareness, of living life from a place of heart and love and getting past the limited patterns and conditionings we all hold. The Toltecs believe that we are dreaming all the time, whether asleep or awake, and that we have the power to change that dream from fear to love in any moment, to create a new dream of happiness and fulfilment for ourselves, our families and our communities. Contact 086 3856001 or visit www.ToltecHeartWisdom.com for further details.
His talk in Dublin will take place in the Mercer Hotel, Mercer Street (behind the St Stephens Green Centre) on 22 April from 19:00-21:00 and admission is EUR 10/7.
The organisers of this event have made a pair of tickets available for the readers of the Event Guide and if you would like to win this pair of tickets, just only have to send a mail to dublineventguide@gmail.com with the subject TOLTEC and your name and mobile phone number in the body of the mail. Please make sure that you are available on Wed 22 April before you enter the competition. Your e-mail has to be with me by 17:00 on Monday 20 April!

FROM PLAYING TO THINKING – TALK ABOUT EDUCATION
After a LOT of work, the Liberty Steiner/Waldorf Initiative, a community group working to establish a centre for Steiner/Waldorf education for children in Dublin City, have been offered a building with planning permission and have applied for a grant. They are now informing and spreading the word about Steiner/Waldorf schools in the wider Dublin public and parents with children aged 2 or less.
This Sunday (19 April) from 16:00-18:00 the initiative is inviting to a talk by Eugene Schwartz, an American educator (www.millennialchild.com). The talk is entitled “From Playing to Thinking” and in this talk, “Eugene will reveal the surprising and profound connection between the joyful play of the four year-old and the high-level cognitive activity of the adolescent. Drawing on the insights of neurologists and physicists, he presents an insightful look at the real work of the Waldorf kindergarten and its ramifications for academic achievement at primary and secondary school level and beyond.
Eugene Schwartz began his teaching career by adapting the Waldorf schools’ curriculum to educate a group of handicapped and emotionally disturbed adolescents, after which he became a class teacher at Green Meadow Waldorf School. In addition to his thirty years’ experience as a class teacher, high school teacher, and educator of Waldorf teachers, Eugene has served as a consultant to Waldorf endeavours throughout the United States, as well as in Ireland, England, Canada, Mexico, Austria and Italy.
The event will take place in the Unitarian Church on St. Stephen’s Green on Sun 19 April from 16:00. Admission to the event is EUR 10/5 and tickets will be available at the door. For further information you can contact steiner@dublin.ie or check http://www.dublinsteiner.org.
The Waldorf/Steiner Initiative have offered to make 3 tickets available for this talk, but because the event is already on Sunday, it is a little short notice to do it the usual way, so instead it works like this: The first 3 people in the door mentioning “Dublin Event Guide (for Free Events)” will get in free. If you have children around the age of 2 or if you are just interested in Waldorf/Steiner education, you should go to this event and bring your friends in a similar situation. And if it is not for you, then please still let your friends know, they might be interested.

FLAMENCO CLASSES – TASTER
Solo Flamenco, a great and very friendly group of Dublin-based talented Flamenco dancers is teaching Beginners and Improvers courses and on Monday 20 April a set of new courses will start. The winner of the pair of Festival Passes is Lisa Fallon. Congratulations!

All events in this Competition Section are non-free events, but the organisers are making free tickets available for you to win. I usually get lots of competition entries and unfortunately not everybody can win, so even if you are not the winner, please consider going to an event to support the organisers. :-) If you don’t win, and will go to the event, please help showing the organisers that promoting their event in the Dublin Event Guide is beneficial and mention to them that you heard about the event through “Joerg’s Dublin Event Guide (for Free Events)”. First there was the fish and fruit/vegetable market and in more recent years the multi-cultural shops of “Little Africa” and “Little China” gave the street some colour and vibrancy. To loose that will be a big cultural loss. However, this is a completely different reason than what the Moore Street lobby raises. They think that the street or at least No 16 in Moore Street should be protected because some historical important persons spent there a few days. If a few hours in a place makes a place a National Monument we will encounter a situation where EVERY building/place street will have to become a National Monument.

FAMILY EVENT – HUGH LANE GALLERY
“Sunday Sketching”, the weekly workshop in Hugh Lane Gallery (Parnell Square) for 7+ year olds from 15:00-16:00 is this week entitled “Sculpture in Focus”. http://www.hughlane.ie/whats_on_detail.php?id=228

REGULAR SUNDAY EVENTS
*The Mary Stokes Band (Blues) from 18:30 in Bruxelles near Grafton Street and near the Westbury Hotel. The group is inviting to a monthly REAL Irish night out but doesn’t give ANY detail about what a REAL Irish night is.
They claim that they have 304 members but that the events are intended to be small events with not more than 150 people and for that reason they don’t want to tell you where the event takes place.
Well, the event is free (Thurs 23 April) so that’s why I mention it here. I have never been there and therefore, can’t empathise with the fascination some people have for this event. But I think that EUR 240 for a weekend of camping in dirt and listening to music is quite steep! But will that stop you from buying? It will definitely stop me. The only way I can express that I am unhappy with prices of products or services is by NOT buying them.

—————–
I am not sure what is wrong with me today, but I am sooooo tired and was hardly able to finish the Event Guide (I started writing at 23:30 on Thursday and it is now after 10:30 on Friday morning and a bit of sleep would be good! :-O ) I guess I better catch up on sleep over the weekend again.

Have a good weekend!

–Joerg

*********************************************
For donations please copy the following line in the address line of your browser and then delete the three spaces in the line (left and right of the dot and after http). It covers mostly free events based on the thinking that free events deserve additional support and that non-free events have the money to pay for advertisement. The Guide is a _guide_ and not just a listing and is therefore at times quite extensive. It is sent for free to anybody who is interested and if you want to be added to the mailing list or know somebody who would like to receive this guide, just send a mail to dublineventguide@gmail.com with the Subject “Subscribe”.
If you have feedback – good or bad – PLEASE tell me via the same e-mail address.
BTW: I am not paid or otherwise rewarded for compiling and distributing this Event Guide it is purely a hobby. However, I won’t say No to donations ;-) and if you want to help me with the running of it (no minimum amount!) just send a mail to dublineventguide@gmail.com with the word “Donation” in the subject and I will reply with a link that will allow you to make your donation by PayPal or per credit card or follow the link just above this section.
