Christmas has firmly arrived!! This weekend is full of Christmas Markets and hopefully you will find one that you like.<\/p>\n

The Facebook Experiment over on http:\/\/www.facebook.com\/DublinEventGuide<\/a> is a big success and shows to be very helpful. We will continue until middle of the week. Watch out for the message on Tuesday morning, there will be an important piece of information in it.<\/p>\n

Next weekend I will be away so I will do my best to complete the Dublin Event Guide a little earlier, but it is a struggle every week. The biggest problem is that working rhough the night without sleep currently doesn’t work that successfully. Probably because the rest of the week is very busy for me as well, which means that there is not THAT much “gas left in the tank”.<\/p>\n

The Goethe-Institut Choir will perform Bach’s Christmas Oratorioat their christmas concert in the National Concert Hall on 08 December. Well-known soloists and the Orchestra of St Cecilia will join the Goethe-Institut Choir. The concert will also feature Christmas carols.<\/p>\n

Christmas FM is back<\/h2>\n

The radio station Christmas FM is back on air from midday on Sat 29 Nov! The charity this year is Age Action and Centra is sponsoring the station again. Christmas FM will broadcast around the clock from now until 26 December. You can listen online via http:\/\/www.christmasfm.com\/<\/a> or on FM frequency 94.3 in Dublin (frequencies for other parts of Ireland are on the website) or you can download the smarphone app.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n

More traffic mess in Dublin City? – Crazy or good ideas for College Green<\/h2>\n
\n

Dublin City has announced that they would like to pedestrianise College Green, but can’t because of the impact on the surrounding road network, which makes a lot of sense.<\/p>\n

However, they plan to shut down one side of College Green for tests and put all traffic to the other side: There are two lanes from Dame Street to Westmoreland Street and these two lanes will be closed in front of the Bank of Ireland building at College Green. The traffic in both directions will then be put on the two lanes of the other side, which currently both go from Trinity to Dame Street.<\/p>\n

Considering that there is and will never be a shop or a cafe in that area outside the Central Bank it is surprising that it gets highest priority for pedestrianisation tests. There are not even many people because there is no reason for being there. The only busy stretch is the pedestrian crossing that brings people from Grafton Street towards Westmoreland Street.<\/p>\n

The other surprising aspect is that the tests will take place on Sundays (at some point in 2015). It is doubtful that a test on a Sunday will really give enough of an idea about the impact of the partial pedestrianisation on traffic on a weekday.<\/p>\n

Dublin Gallery Map<\/h2>\n

Approx. two weeks ago a new resource for art lovers in Dublin and for tourists was launched it is the “Dublin Gallery Map”, a map that shows you the locations of galleries in Dublin. The map will be available in printed form in all galleries and in museums and some other locations. And there is also an online version at http:\/\/www.dublingallerymap.ie\/<\/a><\/p>\n

Some might think the map is a little too niche-ey, but I think its a good idea. The only thing that surprised me is that there are Galleries missing on the map. It’s not THAT easy to miss them or not that difficult to find them!
\nThere is no Centre for Creative Practices on the map, the Oriel Gallery is missing, and also the Inspire Gallery, as well as the Doorway Gallery, Balla Ban, the ! And these are just five that I could think of immediately without hesitation. Odd! If it was an online-only map, I would expect that they will be added in the next few days. But since the main distribution is through a printed map you would maybe expect a higher degree of completeness.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<\/tbody>\n<\/table>\n\n\n\n

Artists Cecilia Moore and Elke Th\u00f6nnes give audiences the chance to ponder the details of familiar places and everyday objects, to see the beauty in what is often overlooked. Cecilia Moore has dismantled metal household objects, like teapots and vases, gathered locally to re assemble and rework them into playful tactile sculptures. This body of work is accompanied by a quirky animation, detailing her design process.<\/p>\n

Elke Th\u00f6nnes has used various fine art print techniques to create a ‘love letter to Dublin. In the search for new methods to ‘read the city’, she has placed details of iconic city structures onto embossings of old maps, The tactile nature of the work is a comment on the craftsmanship and architecture of generations past.<\/p>\n

Cecilia Moore lives in Ballymun, she trained as a silversmith and sculptor and has exhibited widely, receiving several public art commissions, she is currently on a masters programme at the National College of Art and Design. Elke Th\u00f6nnes is a painter and printmaker who works at Graphic Studio Dublin. She has exhibited extensively in group and solo exhibitions nationally and internationally.<\/p>\n

This exhibition by Karl Gaff takes you on a visual odyssey to explore the richness, complexity and the sheer beauty of places far beyond the limits of human vision. A scanning electron microscope (SEM) was used to enter the micro to nanoscopic realms of nature and conduct a type of photography called ‘micrography’.<\/p>\n

Explore treacherous mountain ranges on a single grain of pollen, probe the steep valleys, ridges and rolling hills on the petal of a flower, venture through jungles of high rising spikes emerging from the surface of a leaf and much more.<\/p>\n

The exhibition is open daily in the visitor centre.<\/p>\n

“Studies on Shivering” is a part of a wider project by the artist Damir O?ko (HR). In this project, the artist creates a dialogue between film, poetry, musical scores, objects and drawing to explore a central theme; the shivering body as a metaphor for resistance and unrest. The title of the film in this exhibition, “TK”, comes from the phonetic description of the sound of teeth or stones clashing together. These types of sounds create a visceral, psycho-acoustic response in the listener and the effect is one of O?ko\u2019s central concerns.<\/p>\n

“Studies on Shivering” combines elements such as scores, collages, architectural intervention and collaborations to extend the normal cinematic space and to create a hybrid work in which film, research and poetry are equally weighted.<\/p>\n

BLOOD is the title of the new Science Gallery exhibition that will run from 24 Oct – 25 Jan.<\/p>\n

25 exhibits explore the symbolic, scientific and strange nature of blood and there are certainly some “out there” contributions. For example the video and relics from a bio-art performance where an artist had a blood transfusion form a horse. Or a spoof brand that uses bloodstain-formed fashion accessories addressing the stigma about men strual blood.<\/p>\n

But there are quirky things as well, like the Jukebox that will guess your age by taking your pulse rate and playing a song from your teenage years. And there are some practical aspects: You can take a test that will determine your blood type and you can find out what happens to to donated blood in Ireland.<\/p>\n

An interesting exhibition, but different than what you have seen before in the Science Gallery and that is reflected by the recommendation that the exhibition is only suitable for over 15 year olds.<\/p>\n

If you are ok with the focus on this red substance that makes some of us a bit queasy when we think about it, you should definitely go to the exhibition (and bring an open mind ;-) ). But if blood makes your knees wobbly, then it might not be for you.<\/p>\n

Author and playwright Michael Harding\u2019s creative chronicle of ordinary life in the Irish midlands is published as a weekly column in “The Irish Times”. BLOOD is the title of the new Science Gallery exhibition that will run from 24 Oct – 25 Jan.<\/p>\n

25 exhibits explore the symbolic, scientific and strange nature of blood and there are certainly some “out there” contributions. For example the video and relics from a bio-art performance where an artist had a blood transfusion form a horse. Or a spoof brand that uses bloodstain-formed fashion accessories addressing the stigma about men strual blood.<\/p>\n

But there are quirky things as well, like the Jukebox that will guess your age by taking your pulse rate and playing a song from your teenage years. And there are some practical aspects: You can take a test that will determine your blood type and you can find out what happens to to donated blood in Ireland.<\/p>\n

An interesting exhibition, but different than what you have seen before in the Science Gallery and that is reflected by the recommendation that the exhibition is only suitable for over 15 year olds.<\/p>\n

If you are ok with the focus on this red substance that makes some of us a bit queasy when we think about it, you should definitely go to the exhibition (and bring an open mind ;-) ). But if blood makes your knees wobbly, then it might not be for you.<\/p>\n

“Geansai Nollaig” translates roughly to “most horrendous, cheap quality, often outrageously priced, Christmas-themed jumper” and the only excuse for wearing a jumper like that is the World Record Attempt for most people with A Christmas Jumper in one place. ;-) More than 857 peole are needed to break the record.<\/p>\n

The World Record attempt is the opener to an afternoon of entertainment in O’Connell Street in the run up to the lighting of the Christmas Tree at 18:00.<\/p>\n

“After Crossing the Border: The Act of Translation in Literature, Life and Mind” is panel discussion in the Irish Writers’ Centre.<\/p>\n

Literary translation is seen by many as a means to an end, a necessary process to make a text accessible. Others see translations as a creative process that creates a new work of art. This will be discussed at this event.<\/p>\n

The event is hosted by the the Trinity Journal of Literary Translation (T-JoLT). T-JoLT is an an academic, student-run journal which publishes works of literary translation from any language into English or Irish.<\/p>\n

This event will be a panel discussion, chaired by T-JoLT\u2019s Editor-in-Chief Aine Josephine Tyrrell and will be followed by a Q&A session after the debate. Following the event tea and coffee will be served.<\/p>\n

The Christmas Tree at Smithfield Plaza is probably again the very unloved, but extremely expensive (EUR 300k!), “modern” Christmas Tree (see a partial picture on the website below) that was for a few years in O’Connell Street (2008-2011) and then got discarded to Smithfield Plaza when a proper Christmas Tree finally came back to O’Connell Street.<\/p>\n

Maybe to make up for the “second class” Christmas Tree, the Lighting Ceremony at Smithfiled comes with an Open Air concert on Thursday.<\/p>\n

“The advent of printing in fifteenth-century Europe meant that texts, ideas, and opinions could be reproduced and diffused on an unprecedented scale. In response, most European countries established new institutions, laws and other mechanisms to censor the press. Ireland was no exception. This series will look at the ways in which the press was censored in Ireland from the arrival of printing in 1551 to the late twentieth century. Speakers will discuss literary, political and religious works that have been censored; consider the ways in which printers, booksellers and authors were reprimanded for publishing controversial texts and reflect on the various ways in which press regulation has changed over time.”<\/p>\n

Winter wonderland in Ireland!?! Really?
\n<\/strong><\/p>\n

This is the time of the year when event organisers tell you that their venue will be turned into a Winter wonderland for their Christmas Market and with the best will in the world, this is more than incredible. Why? Well, go to Google and type “Winter wonderland” in and then go the IMAGE results of the search. NOW you see what a Winter wonderland should look like. How does that compare to your outdoor Christmas Market in Ireland or – even more incredible – to your Indoor Christmas Market here?<\/p>\n

Marketing is always embellishing descriptions and features of events and that is normal and not even too problematic as long as there is still some relationship to the truth. We all know that the “best event in the world” might just be the best event that that particular event organiser can put together. But when the descriptions reach the realm of fantasy and dreams, like the “Winter wonderland” or even better the “Magical Winter wonderland” description then someone should take the organisers (or their marketing “experts”) to task and check if their delusion is curable. ;-)<\/p>\n<\/div>\n
