Hi all!<\/p>\n

I know many of you will think that I lost the plot. This Dublin Event Guide (for Free Events) is the earliest out in many many months. But the reason for it is that I am away this weekend. I started working on it on Wednesday and worked through two nights non-stop, because as soon as it is sent on its way, I will get into my car to drive to Galway. Keeva and Sid will get married there tomorrow. Congratulations!!!! :-)<\/p>\n

This week, there is mainly blood and gore in the Dublin Event Guide. ;-) A crazy amount of Halloween events and half of them I couldn’t even mention because they were booked out already (at the Bram Stoker Festival). If you don’t like Halloween, lock yourself away, you will hardly be able to avoid it, but if you like it, this week is YOUR week!<\/p>\n

A weekend singing workshop with international vocal coach Jasmin Martorell will take place in the Harbour Playhouse. It is an intense and rewarding workshop suitable for non singers to professionals.<\/p>\n

With emphasis on breathing and vocal exercises, Jasmin\u2019s enthusiastic teaching and expert understanding of the vocal instrument give the participant the confidence and skill to develop their natural voice to its full potential. The work will be based on how to place your voice, how to breathe and how to reinforce the abdominal muscles, with development of the agility of vocal cords and awakening\/developing of the resonators. Participants will have the opportunity to work individually with Jasmin on a song of their choice.<\/p>\n

Jasmin Martorell comes from France and is a highly skilled and inspired teacher of singing technique. He is a charismatic, enthusiastic and patient teacher who delights with his pupils in finding new and exciting possibilities for their voice. Head of vocal studies at the Centre de Musique Medievale de Paris since 1991, he is regularly invited to conduct Workshops in Singing in France, Brazil, Iran, India, Morocco, the Island of Reunion and Ireland.<\/p>\n

The Beatles Show will consist of a performance of the comic play “Death and the Beatles Fan” plus Beatle songs performed live by Vyvienne Long and Jonathan Ward. Vyvienne is a very talented singer-songwriter who has released two solo albums and a brilliant Beatles EP. She has played cello with many Irish and international musicians \u2013 and is best known for her work with Damien Rice. She has also enjoyed huge radio hits with her own song \u2018Happy Thoughts\u2019 \u2013 and her cover version of \u2018Seven Nation Army\u2019 by The White Stripes. Checkout the statues on O’Connell Street! The Vampires have arrived. The statues were all equipped with capes. Good idea!<\/p>\n

Blood – Science Gallery Exhibition<\/h2>\n

BLOOD is the title of the new Science Gallery exhibition that will run from 24 Oct – 25 Jan.<\/p>\n

25 exhibits explore the symbolic, scientific and strange nature of blood and there are certainly some “out there” contributions. For example the video and relics from a bio-art performance where an artist had a blood transfusion form a horse. Or a spoof brand that uses bloodstain-formed fashion accessories addressing the stigma about men strual blood.<\/p>\n

But there are quirky things as well, like the Jukebox that will guess your age by taking your pulse rate and playing a song from your teenage years. And there are some practical aspects: You can take a test that will determine your blood type and you can find out what happens to to donated blood in Ireland.<\/p>\n

An interesting exhibition, but different than what you have seen before in the Science Gallery and that is reflected by the recommendation that the exhibition is only suitable for over 15 year olds.<\/p>\n

If you are ok with the focus on this red substance that makes some of us a bit queasy when we think about it, you should definitely go to the exhibition (and bring an open mind ;-) ). But if blood makes your knees wobbly, then it might not be for you.<\/p>\n

Bruno Groening Healings – Lecture<\/h2>\n

As part of an interntaional series of lectures the Bruno Groening Circle of Friends will be informing about a special path to health and happiness at numerous events in Ireland as well. Bruno Groening was a German “Miracle healer” who was active in the 1940s and 1950s.<\/p>\n

He believed that health was the natural state of all living things and told his followers that one can maintain health and heal from illness by absorption of a Divine life force that he called “Heilstrom” (“Healing Stream”).<\/p>\n

Two doctors will talk at the events in Ireland about the healings based on the Groening teachings. Groening himself died in 1959 only 52 years young from stomach cancer.<\/p>\n

Viruses, for example, is a special installation of felted sculptures inspired by the microscopic shapes and vibrant colours of common viruses. They are created by felt-maker and designer Niki Collier of Cow\u2019s Lane Designer Studio.<\/p>\n

All open-air workshops are next to the Gaiety School of Acting on Cow\u2019s Lane. No registration is required but places at the workshops are limited (frist come, first served basis).<\/p>\n

As part of an interntaional series of lectures the Bruno Groening Circle of Friends will be informing about a special path to health and happiness at numerous events in Ireland as well. Bruno Groening was a German “Miracle healer” who was active in the 1940s and 1950s.<\/p>\n

He believed that health was the natural state of all living things and told his followers that one can maintain health and heal from illness by absorption of a Divine life force that he called “Heilstrom” (“Healing Stream”).<\/p>\n

Two doctors will talk at the events in Ireland about the healings based on the Groening teachings. Groening himself died in 1959 only 52 years young from stomach cancer.<\/p>\n

BLOOD is the title of the new Science Gallery exhibition that will run from 24 Oct – 25 Jan.<\/p>\n

25 exhibits explore the symbolic, scientific and strange nature of blood and there are certainly some “out there” contributions. For example the video and relics from a bio-art performance where an artist had a blood transfusion form a horse. Or a spoof brand that uses bloodstain-formed fashion accessories addressing the stigma about men strual blood.<\/p>\n

But there are quirky things as well, like the Jukebox that will guess your age by taking your pulse rate and playing a song from your teenage years. And there are some practical aspects: You can take a test that will determine your blood type and you can find out what happens to to donated blood in Ireland.<\/p>\n

An interesting exhibition, but different than what you have seen before in the Science Gallery and that is reflected by the recommendation that the exhibition is only suitable for over 15 year olds.<\/p>\n

If you are ok with the focus on this red substance that makes some of us a bit queasy when we think about it, you should definitely go to the exhibition (and bring an open mind ;-) ). But if blood makes your knees wobbly, then it might not be for you.<\/p>\n

Sweeney Todd allegedly bled his victims to death before dumping them out of his barbers chair into the basement. But many barbers around that time were interested in blood letting to heal, not to kill. Blood on the Streets is series of public performance lectures that will all take place in the window of a babershop.<\/p>\n

On Saturday “The Butcher Barbers” will host Jamie Lewis Hadley and Dr Natasha Malik as they expose the history of bloodletting as a medical practice, tracing its roots in ancient medicine, the rise of the barber-surgeon and our current understanding of this incredible substance. BLOOD is the title of the new Science Gallery exhibition that will run from 24 Oct – 25 Jan.<\/p>\n

25 exhibits explore the symbolic, scientific and strange nature of blood and there are certainly some “out there” contributions. For example the video and relics from a bio-art performance where an artist had a blood transfusion form a horse. Or a spoof brand that uses bloodstain-formed fashion accessories addressing the stigma about men strual blood.<\/p>\n

But there are quirky things as well, like the Jukebox that will guess your age by taking your pulse rate and playing a song from your teenage years. And there are some practical aspects: You can take a test that will determine your blood type and you can find out what happens to to donated blood in Ireland.<\/p>\n

An interesting exhibition, but different than what you have seen before in the Science Gallery and that is reflected by the recommendation that the exhibition is only suitable for over 15 year olds.<\/p>\n

If you are ok with the focus on this red substance that makes some of us a bit queasy when we think about it, you should definitely go to the exhibition (and bring an open mind ;-) ). But if blood makes your knees wobbly, then it might not be for you.<\/p>\n

“New in the Old City” is series of mini festivals in Cow\u2019s Lane in Temple Bar and “Unravel” celebrates the start of the colder months with all things felt, yarn and woolly.<\/p>\n

On Sat+Sun come to see craft installations and take part in felting and knitting workshops, or see how the professionals do it. There will be handcrafted and designer fashion available from the Cow\u2019s Lane and West Essex Street makers and retailers.<\/p>\n

Viruses, for example, is a special installation of felted sculptures inspired by the microscopic shapes and vibrant colours of common viruses. They are created by felt-maker and designer Niki Collier of Cow\u2019s Lane Designer Studio.<\/p>\n

Co-operative housing could offer a way out of the precarious rental market and the trap of long-term mortgage debt, according to Donal O’Driscoll, a member of UK-based co-op network Radical Routes, who will explain how to set such a housing co-op up at this event.<\/p>\n

“The model of co-operative housing is well-established in the UK where legal recognition and corporation tax exemptions make the process of setting up a co-op relatively straightforward,” says Donal.<\/p>\n

“This year\u2019s Samhain will feature a longer route of spook than ever before with more scare footage of chills, freaks and frights than you can shake a broom at. The forest at Marlay Park will be alive, for one night only with freaky fog, ghastly spiders, all seeing eyeballs, spine chilling skeletons, menacing witches and wizards and rotten pirates.
\nFestoon lighting, sound effects and smoke will all add to the scare factor with the haunted forest open 20:30. The haunted forest is not for the faint hearted or easily freaked! The walk is approx 1.7km long on a path suitable for buggies and wheelchairs.”<\/p>\n

The Haunted Woods will be open between 15:30 and 20:30. Admission is free, but ONLY if you have a wristband, Wrsitbands are not available on the day of the event, instead that have to be collected at the DLR Coco Market in Marlay Park on Saturday 25 October from 11:00. And when they are gone, they are gone. (Limited to six per family.)<\/p>\n

This is not a free event and if you hadn’t planned to run 42 km, now would be a little late to opt for it anyway, but it is a BIG event in Dublin and many people take part by supporting the runners from the side of the street.<\/p>\n

Around 13,000 people take part and the first wave of runners starts at 09:00, but the Wheelchair users are already at 08:50 on their way. And then it takes the fastest runners just about 2 hours and 20 minutes (Wheelchairs: 2hrs 30 min) to get from start to finish. The slowest walkers will be 7.5 (!!) hours on the course.<\/p>\n

The start is at Fitzwilliam Square and the finish at Merrion Square and you can check the complete route and the times here<\/a>. I remember that the race course was – at least for the last few kilometres – quite different in previous years, so check the map to find out where you should support the runners\/walkers.<\/p>\n

Due to the Marathon, quite a number of streets are closed and getting into and out of Dublin City is not completely trivial. Information about street closures is on the AA Ireland website<\/a>.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

The Bram Stoker Festival took the legacy of Dublin horror novelist Bram Stoker and his gothic novel ‘Dracula’ as inspiration for a whole range of events from large-scale spectacles including a gothic ball, to small performances in unusual spaces, along with a whole range of film and literary events.<\/p>\n

Macnas populate this journey with mischief, active imagination, baptism and burial. These new priests and madmen whistle and unleash from the shadows, a haunted air heralding in the slumbering descent of countless agitations on high as they close the night upon the city like a trap door.”<\/p>\n

The gig is announced for 20:00-03:00, but that is clearly not the case. Unfortunately Sweeney’s gig times seem to be always wrong. There is nothing wrong in enticing people to come to a pub a bit earlier, we all need to make money somehow. But maybe announcing a gig for 20:00-03:00 that possibly only takes place at midnight and lasts for 1.5 hours or so, is stretching that understanding for the commercial needs a little.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

Christmas Madness in October<\/strong><\/p>\n

It HAS to be done! I can not NOT mention the madness and oddness of Christmas Lights going up in Grafton Street on 21 October. Even I got used to seeing Advents Calenders, Lebkuchen (Ginger bread) and other unique Christmas food products well before Halloween, but hanging up the Christmas lights in Grafton Street before the end of October is just mad!<\/p>\n

I’d suggest that we leave them hanging! Why would Dublin City [or is it Dublin Town (the business association in the Inner City, including Grafton Street)? ] waste the money it costs to take the lights down in January? For these remaining 10 months we could leave the lights hanging and, hey, maybe we should leave them switched on. Because the logic for already hanging them up and ALREADY switching them on on 13 November (MAD people!) should suggest that if we leave the lights all year around, this will increase the money people spend. Maybe they would buy Christmas presents then in March!?<\/p>\n<\/div>\n
