It is a busy event week and it took me ages to search for all the events. There are soo many badly promoted AND badly described events, but I think I got most. I am running very late again, though. This section is intended to provide some help in picking and choosing from the huge number of events by sharing with you what I will\/might or would do. This is not a “best of…” list and if an event is not listed here, it by no means implies that the event is not interesting. Instead my “picks” are just based on my personal preferences. This week, the Fringe Festival is the main event, but there is only one free event, so check it out. It is on Saturday evening at the Samuel Beckett Bridge. It is a musical performance called “Harp”. If you are into fashion, the Dublin Fashion Festival is running this weekend as well.<\/a><\/p>\n

A Job Expo and Which Course Expo is in Croke Park and Indonesian Music Concerts are on Saturday and Sunday entertaining you in the National Concert Hall (Gamelan Concerts).<\/a><\/p>\n

If you want to keep your kids busy and interested, bring them to the National Emergency Services Day in the Royal Hospital Kilmainham or to the Wolly Wards Animal Farm in Marlay Park.<\/a><\/p>\n

The Smithfield Horse Fair takes place on Sunday, only the second and the last time this year.<\/a><\/p>\n

“The O2” is now the “3Arena”<\/h2>\n

You might have seen it already, but if you didn’t, check this out so that you won’t get confused:<\/a><\/p>\n

Since the mobile phone company “3” completed the take over of O2 in Ireland now, the Point Depot’s branding “The O2” had to be changed as well and 3 chose to call it “3Arena”. The change is taking effect immediately, so most web sites that link to the venue have already changed the name.<\/a><\/p>\n

Originally, the building was a railway goods handling depot and was called “Point Depot”, even when it became a entertainment venue later. After a bit renovation the naming rights were sold to O2, but maybe we should just stick to the original name.<\/a><\/p>\n

Sculpture in Context is a brilliant exhibition in the Botanic Gardens and it is Ireland’s largest outdoor sculpture exhibition.<\/a><\/p>\n

Every year a panel of selectors chooses sculptures from established and from upcoming artists and they will then be expertly placed in the garden setting of the Botanic Gardens and it makes a visit to the Botanic Gardens even more interesting then at other times.<\/a><\/p>\n

The class is donation based, but all proceeds go to the Dublin Simon Community, a charity that does invaluable work for the homeless people in Dublin and the suggested donation for this very good cause is EUR 5.<\/a><\/p>\n

The Hare Krishna Chariots Festival (or: Ratha Yatra Festival) takes place in Dublin tomorrow. It is not something that many of us know a lot about it, but it sounds interesting.<\/a><\/p>\n

Dublin will be illuminated by the colours and sounds of this annual Hare Krishna festival, a vibrant celebration of Indian culture and spirituality. Festival-goers, pilgrims, and faith leaders will hand-pull the giant colourful chariot carrying the sacred deities of Lord Jagannatha, Lady Subhadra and Lord Balarama from the Garden of Remembrance to St. Stephen\u2019s Green. The chariot will be accompanied by a procession of singers, musicians and dancers. At St. Stephen\u2019s Green, the whole family can enjoy cultural and educational displays and exhibitions, revealing the spiritual heart of India. There will be workshops, music, food and crafts.<\/a><\/p>\n

The Science Gallery Summer Exhibition “Strange Weather: Forecasts from te Future” has opened on 18 July and will run until 05 October.<\/a><\/p>\n

The exhibition explores how we understand, adapt to and control the changing weather and shows also a lot educational and even quirky bits around weather: A Raindrop hovering in mid-air, a Tornado Diverter, a Cloud Collector, Weather Models, a machine making house shaped clouds and an archive of old events from around the world that were (or are) impacted by weather and of new events emerging because of weather.<\/a><\/p>\n

There are 26 exhibits and – like all Science Gallery exhibitions -, it is a really interesting exhibition. Well worth a visit with the whole family.<\/a><\/p>\n

For generations, the Smithfield Horse Fair was a monthly event. But concerns over animal safety, tax avoidance and Dublin City’s general discomfort and concerns about the event itself and the audience it attracted meant that Dublin City tried to end the Horse Fair. However the laws allowing it are above the powers of Dublin City! So instead of forbidding it, it was reduced to two markets per year (March + September).<\/a><\/p>\n

The second market this year and – as far as I remember – the second market under this new regime is taking place on Sunday. It will be heavily supervised by Gardai, Dublin City and Animal Welfare organisations and it remains to be seen if it still attracts plenty of horse sellers and buyers.<\/a><\/p>\n

In happier times this was a very unique and interesting event, but I wouldn’t dare a “forecast” for this weekend’s event. It could be extra big because it is only twice a year or it could be very small.<\/a><\/p>\n

Many thought that it was a good decision to limit the markets to two and were hoping that this would be helpful for the horse’s welfare as well, others, however, are more in favour of an open market that can be supervised instead of pushing the – undoubtedly continuing – selling and buying of horses into the grey and unsupervised area.<\/a><\/div>\n

The Science Gallery Summer Exhibition “Strange Weather: Forecasts from te Future” has opened on 18 July and will run until 05 October.<\/a><\/p>\n

The exhibition explores how we understand, adapt to and control the changing weather and shows also a lot educational and even quirky bits around weather: A Raindrop hovering in mid-air, a Tornado Diverter, a Cloud Collector, Weather Models, a machine making house shaped clouds and an archive of old events from around the world that were (or are) impacted by weather and of new events emerging because of weather.<\/a><\/p>\n

There are 26 exhibits and – like all Science Gallery exhibitions -, it is a really interesting exhibition. Well worth a visit with the whole family.<\/a><\/p>\n

You can even be a TV weather man\/woman in a professional studio set-up! An interesting experience!

This weekend, the last Supermoon will be visible (if we have a cloudless sky). A supermoon is a Full Moon that occurs when the Moon is closest to Earth.<\/a><\/p>\n

On Sunday night the closest position will be at 00:27 (Monday morning), when the distance between Moon and Earth is a mere 355,392km. There were two other supermoons this year (13 July + 11 Aug) and this is the last one for 2014.<\/a><\/p>\n

But the good news is that you don’t have to wait until 00:27 on Monday morning, the brighter than usual moon will be over us and is visible (if there are no clouds) from Saturday until Tuesday.<\/a><\/p>\n

A Marine Biodiversity Workshop, given by Karin Dubsky (International Coordinator Coastwatch Europe and expert on marine conservation) will take place.<\/a><\/p>\n

It will include a walk and talk across Dollymount Beach to identify seashells using Coastwatch\u2019s sea shells poster, which was recently launched for Heritage Week. You will also be shown how to use the Coastwatch Survey Questionnaire to describe the condition of your coast in terms of its biodiversity, evidence of litter, waste and pollution, aqua culture harvesting activity and shore changes due to nature, erosion, water changes.<\/a><\/p>\n

Dublin City Council Biodiversity staff will accompany you on the walk detailing the history and ecology of Bull Island and the challenges to its habitats, particularly the invasive plant species Sea Buckthorn. On the walk you will be shown the unique protected habitats of the Island including coastal dunes, humid dune slacks, mudflats and marshes. <\/a><\/p>\n

One day, while walking from Dunsink Observatory to the Royal Irish Academy, he suddenly had the crucial idea and to make sure that he won’t forget it, he inscribed the formula for Quaternion Equations on Broom Bridge.<\/a><\/p>\n

The Cannonball Run Ireland, a super car rally from Dublin via Sligo and Galway to Tullamore (Why Tullamore!?!?!) will take place from Friday to Sunday.<\/a><\/p>\n

It is a super tiny version of similar events in other countries (the recent UK event went all over Europe). The participating cars are Lamborghinis, Ferraris, Porsches, Mercedes etc and up to 160 cars could take part. The Cannonball Run is a charity event and is raising a significant amount of money for children’s charities.<\/a><\/p>\n

Your part – unless you have one of these cars AND have the money and time to enter the event – is a watching and maybe admiring role: The Cannonball Run will leave at 10:00 at the Point Village and you are welcome to see the car assemble and then leave together.<\/a><\/div>\n

Autumn Sounds at Farmleigh House<\/h2>\n

“Autumn Sounds” are two concerts in Farmleigh House. The first on is on Friday 05 Sept and the second is on Fri 19 Sept.<\/a><\/p>\n

Duo Chagall (Gillian Williams, violin, and Arun Rao, cello) will entertain you on two evenings.<\/a><\/p>\n

Both concerts are free but ticketed. Tickets will be given out via a lottery and you can only apply for max. two tickets and you will only be notified if you won the tickets. The ticket application for the first concert is closed now, so therefore only the second concert is listed below:<\/a><\/p>\n

Fri 19 Sept: “Romantic Russian Music”
The second concert is the best music written for solo strings from romantic heavyweights Tchaikovsky and Rachmaninov. The programme also includes the ‘Trio Pathetique’ written originally for clarinet, bassoon and piano by Russian musical pioneer Mihail Glinka; the ‘Potpourri for Strings’ duet by late romantic Reinholt Glier; and Rimsky-Korsakov\u2019s favourite ‘Flight of the Bumblebee’. The pianist at this concert is Edward Holly.<\/p>\n

Dublin Mountains Partnership – Guided Walks<\/h2>\n

Every month the Dublin Mountain Partnership runs free guided walks in the Dublin Mountains on some Saturdays or Sundays during the month. In September there will be 3 walks. The walks have varying difficulty and duration and the details can be found on the Dublin Mountain Partnership website: http:\/\/www.dublinmountains.ie\/news\/upcoming_events\/?no_cache=1<\/a><\/p>\n
