Hi all!<\/p>\n

I am not sure if many of you will get this mail, because it seems that an exodus has befallen Dublin again at this Electric Picnic weekend. ;-) But the good news for us who stayed behind is that there are a good few interesting events taking place.<\/p>\n

It was probably good that so many people went to Stradbally to Electric Picnic so that there is enough space for the 20,000 Americans that came for the Croke Park Classic American Football Game today. But don’t start looking for the 20,000 becuase as round as this figure is as invented it probably is. We know that nearly all organisations involved in tourism or events in Ireland suffer from a certain form od attendance delusion. On the other hand, in this case there is a countable crowd because tickets for Croke Park were sold and it sold out. So maybe they could be right? We will never know for certain.<\/p>\n

This week’s Dublin Event Guide contains lots of events, but you will miss many gigs if you look through it in detail. And here is the reason: Venues update their next month schedules often only when the previous month is over. Because this time the week ends with the last day of the month, there is a high probability that the schedules will all be updated on Monday – too late for this Dublin Event Guide. SO be aware that as far as gigs in pubs are concerned (Mercantile, Sweeney’s, Mother Reilly’s, Whelan’s, etc.) more might come to light during the coming week.<\/p>\n

A BIG Thank You to the people thatread my appeal for donations here last week and helped with their money. All the donations go directly into the Dublin Event Guide pot and I don’t make a cent from it, I just pay the bills with it and try to build a little reserve so that I can afford some improvements at some stage. It is the steady and continuous little things that can change the world. What can you do to change the world? Pouring water (with a handful of icecubes in it) over your head won’t change the world, but the EUR 2 or EUR 10 or whatever people are prepared to donate, that makes the change. And with that in mind, the water bucket is not absolutely required, but it is what made that campaign viral so it is absolutely ok.<\/p>\n

The reason why want you to watch it first is because there is a disclaimer about the video. The students did exactly what you see in the video in a two cities in Germany with\/for a number of homeless people. But when they decided to create a film for YouTube they became concerned about the moral aspect of “using” a homeless person to create the video. For that reason they re-created the real situation but replaced the homeless person with a person who acted.<\/p>\n

Because they first did the act of kindness in reality and then only recreated the metaphorical element of it, I think it is justified what they did, but if you knew that before watching the film, it could have diluted the message.<\/p>\n

This section is intended to provide some help in picking and choosing from the huge number of events by sharing with you what I will\/might or would do. This is not a “best of…” list and if an event is not listed here, it by no means implies that the event is not interesting. Instead my “picks” are just based on my personal preferences. All events mentioned here are described in detail further down.<\/em><\/p>\n

This week, the first event I would go to (but I won’t be able to make it) is the Croke Park Classic Tailgate Party, just to get the atmosphere. The next event on Saturday is the Merrion Square Open Day, a great opportunity to see some really interesting buildings. If you have never been in No 29, the Georgian House Museum, put it on your must-do list.<\/p>\n

On Sunday the Dublin Flea Market is great and the weather forecast for Sunday is really good. So after the flea market, get out and do something in the open air!<\/p>\n

On Wednesday the First Wednesday takes place again where OPW sites (e.g. Dublin Castle) don’t charge any admission fees. And on Thursday the Dublin Fashion Festival starts.<\/p>\n

National Heritage Week<\/h2>\n

From 23-31 August the National Heritate Week takes place. It is a brilliant event with lots of individual events in historic locations. 1700 events take place throughout Ireland and approx. 400 of these are in Dublin. But unfortuantely the User Interface on the website at http:\/\/www.heritageweek.ie<\/a> is really bad. Forget the map, instead select the part of Dublin that you want to go to in the fields below and then search through 22 (!!) pages of events (for Dublin City). It would be great if for next year the information was easier accessible.<\/p>\n

In previous years there were books (they were thick!) available in the Tourist Office in Suffolk Street and I don’t know if they are available again, but without something like that, you are lost.<\/p>\n

An alternative strategy would be to go to the website of the location you are considering to visit and check there directly for events.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n

Sculpture in Context is a brilliant exhibition in the Botanic Gardens and it is Ireland’s largest outdoor sculpture exhibition.<\/p>\n

Every year a panel of selectors chooses sculptures from established and from upcoming artists and they will then be expertly placed in the garden setting of the Botanic Gardens and it makes a visit to the Botanic Gardens even more interesting then at other times.<\/p>\n

National Heritage Week is packed with events and even on these last few das (it ends on 31 August) there is still lots to do. All over Ireland more than 1700 events took place during the week<\/p>\n

Whether it’s castles, crafts, music or stories, National Heritage Week aims to involve you in something unique and memorable. Medieval fairs, night-time bat walks, wildlife walks and traditional music sessions, storytelling, historical re-enactments, and workshops for children; Heritage Week is a feast of events offering something for everyone and many of the events are especially for the family. Learn about Ireland’s multi-cultural past, its great ruins, unique stories, hidden histories and so much more.<\/p>\n

Unfortunately, the event search facility on the website is an absolute pain. The map on the What’s On site is nice, but delivery back a long list of non-descriptive headlines in tiny font. Instead select your region of Dublin in the search fields below. You still have to search through tooo many pages, but at least the output list contains a bit more information.<\/p>\n

Innovative craft frontiers, beautiful objects, textiles and more will be on display at the Wandering Methods exhibition in Dublin Castle. Wandering Methods is an art and craft initiative developed in partnership by Bealtaine and Craftspace (Birmingham) in association with the Office of Public Works and participants have been working in Dublin Castle over the past few months with artists Liz Nilsson and Jenny Walsh in order to learn about the realms of textile printing and digital craft fabrication.<\/p>\n

On Saturday (30 August) many buildings around Merrion Square open their doors for the annual Merrion Square Open Day. The Goethe Institut is one of them and due to the imminent redevelopment of the building and site, this is the last chance to see it in its current state.<\/p>\n

The redevelopment of the Goethe-Institut’s Irish HQ at 37 Merrion Square will see the 1790 Georgian townhouse refurbished to its period glory and add a new garden and contemporary mews building for its language department on the site. Designed by German-Irish architects Henchion Reuter, redevelopment will the take from September 2014 until autumn 2016. The Goethe-Institut will temporarily relocate all services to 62 Fitzwilliam Square.<\/p>\n

Before the building work beginns, Architect Martin Henchion will give tours through the building at 13:00 and 15:00 and talk about the design. An exhibition about the building project will be on show in the Goethe-Institut’s Return Gallery.<\/p>\n

The Science Gallery Summer Exhibition “Strange Weather: Forecasts from te Future” has opened on 18 July and will run until 05 October.<\/p>\n

The exhibition explores how we understand, adapt to and control the changing weather and shows also a lot educational and even quirky bits around weather: A Raindrop hovering in mid-air, a Tornado Diverter, a Cloud Collector, Weather Models, a machine making house shaped clouds and an archive of old events from around the world that were (or are) impacted by weather and of new events emerging because of weather.<\/p>\n

There are 26 exhibits and – like all Science Gallery exhibitions -, it is a really interesting exhibition. Well worth a visit with the whole family.<\/p>\n

You can even be a TV weather man\/woman in a professional studio set-up! An interesting experience!

National Heritage Week is packed with events and even on these last few das (it ends on 31 August) there is still lots to do. All over Ireland more than 1700 events took place during the week<\/p>\n

Whether it’s castles, crafts, music or stories, National Heritage Week aims to involve you in something unique and memorable. Medieval fairs, night-time bat walks, wildlife walks and traditional music sessions, storytelling, historical re-enactments, and workshops for children; Heritage Week is a feast of events offering something for everyone and many of the events are especially for the family. Learn about Ireland’s multi-cultural past, its great ruins, unique stories, hidden histories and so much more.<\/p>\n

Unfortunately, the event search facility on the website is an absolute pain. The map on the What’s On site is nice, but delivery back a long list of non-descriptive headlines in tiny font. Instead select your region of Dublin in the search fields below. You still have to search through tooo many pages, but at least the output list contains a bit more information.<\/p>\n

Innovative craft frontiers, beautiful objects, textiles and more will be on display at the Wandering Methods exhibition in Dublin Castle. Wandering Methods is an art and craft initiative developed in partnership by Bealtaine and Craftspace (Birmingham) in association with the Office of Public Works and participants have been working in Dublin Castle over the past few months with artists Liz Nilsson and Jenny Walsh in order to learn about the realms of textile printing and digital craft fabrication.<\/p>\n

The Science Gallery Summer Exhibition “Strange Weather: Forecasts from te Future” has opened on 18 July and will run until 05 October.<\/p>\n

The exhibition explores how we understand, adapt to and control the changing weather and shows also a lot educational and even quirky bits around weather: A Raindrop hovering in mid-air, a Tornado Diverter, a Cloud Collector, Weather Models, a machine making house shaped clouds and an archive of old events from around the world that were (or are) impacted by weather and of new events emerging because of weather.<\/p>\n

There are 26 exhibits and – like all Science Gallery exhibitions -, it is a really interesting exhibition. Well worth a visit with the whole family.<\/p>\n

The STRANGE WEATHER Hackathon brings together designers, developers, climate scientists, artists, academics and members of the public to build working prototypes of new apps, websites and tools to tackle real challenges associated with climate change and extreme weather. Facilitated by experts from the Met Office, Met Eireann and the Environmental Protection Agency, teams will respond to challenges set by organisations like D\u00f3chas, Concern and UNICEF Ireland who regularly deal with the uncertainty and impact of weather extremes across the globe.<\/p>\n

Over two days participants will code, hack, 3D print, solder, circuit-bend and brainstorm their way to create unique and innovative solutions to real-world challenges and present them to a panel of experts. The winning team will then travel to London and take part in the Digital Design weekend Hackathon at the V&A Museum as part of London Design Week, on 20+21 September.<\/p>\n

The Hackathon runs from 08:00-20:00 on 03+04 September. Open data, materials and helpful advice will all be available, but feel free to bring along your own laptops and hacking gear.<\/p>\n

The Sophisticated Neanderthal Interview is a new film work by British artist Nathaniel Mellors. The action focuses on an interview between Truson, a character from Mellor\u2019s earlier work Ourhouse and an apparently genuine Neanderthal man.<\/p>\n

The site for the interview is the exterior of a large cave called \u201cE-Den\u201d. (in fact the location of the original 1960s Batcave in Griffiths Park, Los Angeles). This metaphorical place is meant to represent the shift from the hunter-gatherer mode of human existence to the more knowledge-based Neolithic way of life, in which people began to rely on farming and ownership of land. This period of change in human history can be seen as the starting point of the modern economy of ownership, and the subsequent slide into ecological unsustainability.<\/p>\n

The film will be screened after this Preview from 05 September until 01 November.<\/p>\n

“The advent of printing in fifteenth-century Europe meant that texts, ideas, and opinions could be reproduced and diffused on an unprecedented scale. In response, most European countries established new institutions, laws and other mechanisms to censor the press. Ireland was no exception. This series will look at the ways in which the press was censored in Ireland from the arrival of printing in 1551 to the late twentieth century. Autumn Sounds at Farmleigh House<\/h2>\n

“Autumn Sounds” are two concerts in Farmleigh House. The first on is on Friday 05 Sept and the second is on Fri 19 Sept.<\/p>\n

Duo Chagall (Gillian Williams, violin, and Arun Rao, cello) will entertain you on two evenings.<\/p>\n

Both concerts are free but ticketed. Tickets will be given out via a lottery and you can only apply for max. two tickets and you will only be notified if you won the tickets. The ticket application for the first concert is closed now, so therefore only the second concert is listed below:<\/p>\n

Fri 19 Sept: “Romantic Russian Music”
\nThe second concert is the best music written for solo strings from romantic heavyweights Tchaikovsky and Rachmaninov. The programme also includes the ‘Trio Pathetique’ written originally for clarinet, bassoon and piano by Russian musical pioneer Mihail Glinka; the ‘Potpourri for Strings’ duet by late romantic Reinholt Glier; and Rimsky-Korsakov\u2019s favourite ‘Flight of the Bumblebee’. The pianist at this concert is Edward Holly.<\/p>\n

Irish Postcodes – Already a shambles before they are introduced!
\n<\/strong><\/p>\n

Is it only the Irish Government or do even lots of “respected” company just have a particular talent to mess things up!? This time it is the postocde system that will be introduced in Spring of 2015. It seems that Ireland is the only country in Europe that doesn’t use postcodes yet and while things seem to work here without postcodes, it COULD possibly be more efficient with postcodes.<\/p>\n

The great thing when you introduce a new system that others are already using, is that you could avoid their mistakes and just go for the best possible solution. But the Irish way is a little different. A tender was issued some while ago and a number of companies replied (we hope). In the end the tender was awarded to Capita Business Support Services Ireland last year. But they couldn’t do the job on their own (I would love to know what it entails apart from coming up with a suitable numbering system.) instead, they need support from BearingPoint, Autoaddress and Strand Communications.<\/p>\n

So now we have four companies that should put their heads together and copy the good things from other countries anywhere else in the world and ensure that none of the bad things are introduced in the Irish Postcode system.<\/p>\n

But what do they do? They must have had an absolute “Lightning moment” when they came up with the most brilliant idea: “Ahh, lads, you know what: Let’s not invest much work and let’s not change what we have now, We will just use the current Dublin postcodes and add something to it.” An ingenious (NOT!!!!) idea and well worth the money these companies probably are getting!<\/p>\n

The current postcodes don’t make much sense. Dublin 1 and Dublin 2 are much too big. Dublin 8 is not only in the Liberties, but to make sure that the President can live in an area that doesn’t have an uneven number (uneven = Northside), they current Dublin 8 code is also used for Phoenix Park.<\/p>\n

So a radical overhaul would have made sense. …it was the perfect opportunity.<\/p>\n

But they didn’t do that! Instead they are keeping the current postcode in a 3digit form and are bolting another 4 digits on to it. So the GPO could be something like “D01 K4AT”. But it gets worse Penney’s next to the GPO could have the number “D01 A4PL”. In other words, the 4-digit code doesn’t use logic but is completely random. There should be some logic in it, so that maybe the next door building gets the code D01 K3AT or D01 K4AS to express the physical closeness.<\/p>\n

What amazing level of incompetence!<\/p>\n
