Last chance this weekend to see the free Shakespeare Play in Iveagh Garden and with a bit of luck the weather gods will guarantee a good finish of that run. And also last chance to see the Sand Sculptures Exhibition, don’t miss it.<\/p>\n

Apart from that, it is another weekend with a steady supply of good events, but not one really big event. By the way, that’s absolutely ok. Because usually really big events, like the Fringe Festival or the Opera Festival or the Theatre Festival are not free, so I am very happy with a steady supply of free events that are not sooo much headline.<\/p>\n

This week the Dublin News section is quite full with information and opinion. ;-) Maybe I need to expand the This is Odd section, because the amount of odd things happening is just unbelievable! Have a look!<\/p>\n

You wonder why I added this section to this e-mail magazine? If your week was great, you might not need it, but most of us had some challenging moments in the last week and there could be more in the coming week and this section is for the people that want to overcome the hurdles, achieve more and remember that despite all, life is great!<\/p>\n

This week the Feel Good Slot is a lot more sombre than usually.<\/p>\n

It really shocked me when I heard about Robin Williams death during the week. He made me love when he showed his comedy genius, which I saw the very first time in 2002 here https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=4LaJDOD5cJI<\/a> and he made me think in films like Dead Poets Society and many others. He was an outstanding actor and comedian and it is sad to hear that the challenges he saw in his life were bigger than the pleasures life gave him.<\/p>\n

But there is more: The Feel Good Slot is there to make you smile or happy (and sometimes also to poke you a bit), but not to make you sad, so why did I choose to write about Robin Williams today?<\/p>\n

The reason is in the last “line” of the tribute video above: Robin Williams says “Make your life SPECTACULAR!” Take this from him! And if you remember nothing else, then just remember his appeal to you: Make your life spectacular!<\/p>\n

Sadness and joy are very close to each other and some say, that one can’t be without the other. I am sad that Robin Williams is gone, but I am overjoyed that he made me laugh like no other comedian was ever able to. He is leaving a legacy of laughter and joy and he certainly showed us that life can be great, until he couldn’t take the burden of his illnesses anymore.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

The 80s hair metal Tribute Band SHIFT, will celebrate a successful first half of 2014 with a gig in the Sugar Club on 23 Aug. The night will open with a screening of \u201cWayne’s World 2\u201d, followed by an extended performance by SHIFT, with an 80s DJ until late. Tickets can be bought online here<\/a> for EUR 10. Temple Bar going posh?<\/h2>\n
\n

A surprising piece of news emerged on Thursday: Dublin City Council has decided that the “traditional” looking shopfronts of the relatively new Supermacs in Temple Bar and its sister eatery Papa John’s are inappropriate and will have to be removed.<\/p>\n

This is surprising, considering that most pubs and at least some of the shops in Temple Bar have very traditional looking shop fronts. The Joy of Coffee to the left and Farrington’s to the right, BOTH have completely traditional shop fronts and Hungry Harry’s (who was there before) looked pot-ugly as you can see here<\/a>. In comparison to that the facade now<\/a> doesn’t look too bad. I am not a fan of Supermacs and only ate there once in my life, but on this planning issue, I definitely think Dublin City got it wrong!<\/p>\n

And there are more surprising aspects: Supermacs has to remove the shopfront, but they are seemingly allowed to stay. An article in the Irish Times<\/a> about this describes that the two new eateries are in the premises where Hungry Harry’s (26-27 Essex Street) was before and the article continues saying that Hungry Harry’s was “closed after it was twice refused permission to use the building as a takeaway”. Wait, what type of restaurant is Supermacs? Or Papa John’s? Can anybody really seriously claim that they are NOT takeaways? But if they are takeaways, how come they are allowed to stay?<\/p>\n

The no-takeaway rule is interesting in itself with McDonalds having opened not too long ago at the corner of the Temple Bar Square. Maybe they are not seen as a takeaway either!?<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n

Northside Music Festival is gone!<\/h2>\n
\n

This week, while preparing for the current Dublin Event Guide (for Free Events), I realised that I hadn’t heard anything about the Northside Music Festival this year. For years it was a series of great, free gigs, spread out over a number of weeks, in venues and parks of the Northside. Dublin City was the organiser of the event.<\/p>\n

Unfortunately it is no more. The Urban Fleadh was allegedly the “replacement” for the Northside Music Festival, but I can’t see how a 2-day music festival that features nearly exclusively Irish music, can replace a whole set of gigs that ranged from Classical via African Music and Kletzmer Music to Ballymun Rap.<\/p>\n

The Broadcasting Authority of Ireland (BAI) has lost it!<\/h2>\n

Imagine, if I was forced to “balance” an opinion every time I express one. So if I wrote about a gig saying “This is a really good band, you should go to that gig!” I would HAVE to quote someone else who disagrees and says “The band is awful! Stay away from it at all cost.” If I would do that EVERY time. you would think I have lost it, right?<\/p>\n

So what if someone said on radio or on TV: “My wife and I are really happy. I am so happy that I married her.” What if that radio or TV station would HAVE to invite someone who is not happy in his relationship and who thinks that marriages are overrated. EVERY time!? You would also think they lost it, right?<\/p>\n

Well, the Broadcasting Authority of Ireland (BAI) has decided that this will have to be done from now on. EVERY time! And yes, they have lost it indeed!<\/p>\n

Or could it be that the BAI only insists on this balance when the discussion is about a very specific and limited subject?<\/p>\n

On 20 January 2014, the Mooney Show on RTE Radio One supported same-gender marriages in a programme. During the programme two guests and the presenter made several statements supporting same-gender marriage and now the Broadcasting Authority of Ireland has decided that they broke the rules for broadcasting in Ireland and that the programme was “not fair, objective or impartial”. http:\/\/www.thejournal.ie\/bai-complaint-same-sex-marriage-mooney-show-1620082-Aug2014\/<\/a><\/p>\n

I am sure the BAI had no intention of singling out only on topic or type of comment, right? Dale Chihuly’s vibrant coloured glass installations and opulent Chandeliers hang in many of the world’s most prestigious museums and public spaces including the Victoria and Albert museum, the Metropolitan Museum of Art, and the Louvre in Paris.<\/p>\n

A world premier of “Ulysses Cylinders” inspired by James Joyces’s Ulysses will come to the Coach House of Dublin Castle. This collaborative exhibition combines the alchemic artistry of Dale Chihuly with painter Seaver Leslie’s pen and ink drawings to create a unique collection of golden glass Cylinders.<\/p>\n

Working with Leslie’s drawings on paper, artists Mace and Kirkpatrick constructed fragile glass drawings, which Chihuly’s team studio amalgamated into individual Cylinders of glass wrapped in gold leaf. Each drawing offers a visual trigger into selected narratives of Ulysses as recounted by Joyce.<\/p>\n

Participants in the Citizens Wallpaper project produce visual sections of a wallpaper that reflect their view of their world by highlighting topics which interest and define them. It explores modern cultural connections by sharing extracts from personal stories, giving a powerful voice to communal experiences.<\/p>\n

A Citizens Wallpaper exhibition is on show in the Fumbally Exchange Gallery and it comes in form of a film and photography exhibition. The Science Gallery Summer Exhibition “Strange Weather: Forecasts from the Future” has opened on 18 July and will run until 05 October.<\/p>\n

The exhibition explores how we understand, adapt to and control the changing weather and shows also a lot educational and even quirky bits around weather: A Raindrop hovering in mid-air, a Tornado Diverter, a Cloud Collector, Weather Models, a machine making house shaped clouds and an archive of old events from around the world that were (or are) impacted by weather and of new events emerging because of weather.<\/p>\n

There are 26 exhibits and – like all Science Gallery exhibitions -, it is a really interesting exhibition. Well worth a visit with the whole family.<\/p>\n

The Science Gallery Summer Exhibition “Strange Weather: Forecasts from the Future” has opened on 18 July and will run until 05 October.<\/p>\n

The exhibition explores how we understand, adapt to and control the changing weather and shows also a lot educational and even quirky bits around weather: A Raindrop hovering in mid-air, a Tornado Diverter, a Cloud Collector, Weather Models, a machine making house shaped clouds and an archive of old events from around the world that were (or are) impacted by weather and of new events emerging because of weather.<\/p>\n

There are 26 exhibits and – like all Science Gallery exhibitions -, it is a really interesting exhibition. Well worth a visit with the whole family.<\/p>\n

You can even be a TV weather man\/woman in a professional studio set-up! An interesting experience!

The fantastic Fortune Fool’s Productions who brought free Shakespeare plays to Ranelagh and Iveagh Gardens are back and will perform “Much Ado About Nothing in Iveagh Gardens from 07-17 August.<\/p>\n

There are only two performances left at 15:00 on 16 + 17 August, so if you don’t want to miss out, you have to go this weekend!<\/p>\n

Admission is free (donations are welcome) and no tickets are required. Entry to Iveagh Gardens is through the entrance at Clonmel Street, which is off Harcourt Street. Dress weather-appropriately and bring a blanket or even a chair to sit on<\/p>\n

The Jack of Diamonds Rhythm & Roots Festival takes place from Fri 15 – Sun 17 August. The festival has grown massively over the last few years and will mainly take place indoors in Button Factory, Mercantile, Sweeney Mongrels and Grand Social and outdoors through the “Rock ‘n’ Roll Conference” in the Dame District.<\/p>\n

The Rock ‘n’ Roll Conference is listed separately in this Dublin Event Guide. The Jack of Diamonds gigs start at around 21:00 on Saturday in the Mercantile, Sweeney’s and Grand Social and on Sunday the Grand Social and Sweeney’s already start at 18:00 and the Mercantile at 20:00.<\/p>\n

The Rose of Tralee Festival is not your usual event. It takes place in Tralee, but over two nights (Mon + Tues) and a total of six LONG hours, the main event will be shown on TV (RTE1). So it is just a live TV show, but that show is so odd, that I have to mention it here, especially for all the non-Irish readers of the Dublin Event Guide.<\/p>\n

The purpose of the event is to determine the next “Rose of Tralee”, a woman that will represent Tralee for a year. But the competition is not a beauty competition, not a talent competition (in some cases maybe rather the opposite) and not a personality competition. So you wonder what it is? Who knows!!!<\/p>\n

Somehow one of the 32 competitors (who come from Irish communities from all over the world) will be chosen and announced on Tuesday night.<\/p>\n

But before that you can have the pleasure or torture of listening to little life stories, anecdotes, praising the parents, praising the “esco rts” (young men that are “assigned” to the competitors for the duration of the festival as accompanyment), listening to mad proud parents cheering their daughter and waving silly banners and – the worst – listening to or watching the competitors perform their often very questionable talent in form of a song, dance or – if all else fails – the recital of a poem.<\/p>\n

The event totall harmless, but it is also as anachronistic as it gets and it is as “traditional” Irish as you can only imagine. The fact that RTE broadcasts it live over two whole evenings every year, says a lot and if you have never seen or heard about it, give it a go. You will shake your head in amazement! :-)<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

\nThe first concert is entirely devoted to the music of German Romantic Robert Schumann, who left a treasure trove of masterpieces for various combinations of instruments with piano. Starting with the rarely heard ‘Phantasy Pieces’ for piano trio from 1840, a Christmas gift to his recently-wed Clara, the concert will feature his great ‘Piano Quintet’ where, for the first time in Farmleigh. The pianist at this concert is Caterina Lemoni.<\/p>\n

Fri 19 Sept: “Romantic Russian Music”
\nThe second concert is the best music written for solo strings from romantic heavyweights Tchaikovsky and Rachmaninov. The programme also includes the ‘Trio Pathetique’ written originally for clarinet, bassoon and piano by Russian musical pioneer Mihail Glinka; the ‘Potpourri for Strings’ duet by late romantic Reinholt Glier; and Rimsky-Korsakov\u2019s favourite ‘Flight of the Bumblebee’. The pianist at this concert is Edward Holly.<\/p>\n

Both cocnerts are free but ticketed. Tickets will be given out via a lottery and you can only apply for max. two tickets and you will only be notified if you won the tickets.<\/p>\n

Customer Service in Ireland? F\u00f3nfix is a BAD example!
\n<\/strong><\/p>\n

Last week my phone and trusted companion, a Samsung Galaxy SIII, died. It was lying on the table all on its own and next time I checked it, the Samsung boot logo was on the screen and the phone didn’t react to any button presses anymore. A reboot put it in a worse state and there was no recovery possible. The phone had to get repaired.<\/p>\n

In my years of using mobile phone, this was not the first case of dead phone, but it is stressful everytime. I have the normal contacts and a few other bits backed up, but a LOT of information (extensive notes, an event specific database, lots of recordings and some pictures) will be lost forever due to my mistake of not making comprehensive backups.<\/p>\n

In the past I brought my phone to a company that was then called “The Mobile Phone Repair Company” (MPRC) in Sandyford Business Park and I was able to collect it repaired a few days later. This time I went to the same offices because I was in the area anyway. The offices are now used by a company called “F\u00f3nfix”, which is possibly the same company under a new name (Despite very clear Company Registration Office rules, the company does not list their Company Registration Number on the website www.fonfix.ie.)<\/p>\n

I rang the door bell and someone opened who was prepared to take my phone. She started filling out a form when she told me that there will be a charge of EUR 15 for this. WTF!? This is a warranty case! My phone is still within warranty! Yes, she replies, but the Walk-in service costs EUR 15. It is free if you send the phone in by post or if you drop it in to the phone shop (in my case Vodafone). So I am asking her why there is a charge. She tells me because usually (not always!) the service is faster when you drop the phone in. I am telling her that I don’t want them to prioritise my phone, just take the time you want\/need. If I don’t get a prioritised service, can I then leave my phone here (I am standing in reception in front of her.) without paying the charge? No, she says, that’s not possible. So to get my phone repaired for free, I have to leave the offices and either send it in or drop it into a Vodafone shop.<\/p>\n

I left with my phone and without paying the EUR 15 and – if I ever have a choice – F\u00f3nfix will not get my business.<\/p>\n

In hindsight I realise that I should have left, put the phone in an envelope, but a clipboard under my arm and should have claimed that I am a courier delivering a parcel. I wasn’t smart enough, but I was and still am fuming over the Customer “Service” at F\u00f3nfix.<\/p>\n

(By the way: Charging for a priority service is not a horrible thing. It is an extra and improved service that possible justifies an extra fee. But accepting a delivery by post for no fee, but not accepting a delivery by hand under the same conditions (i.e. without prioritisation) is not ok.)<\/p>\n<\/div>\n
