The Dublin Event Guide (for Free Events) is growing and growing! Every week a minimum of 70 new subscribers join us and sometimes the figure is up to 150. And with that steady growth, the Dublin Event Guide now has more than 22,000 subscribers! I am happy and proud to help you week after week with a looong list of free events.<\/a><\/p>\n

Thanks for your support! Growing numbers spur me on and motivate me to send this weekly e-mail magazine now in the 373rd week and I haven’t missed a week in the last 7 years. What started as a little hobby is now nearly a full time job (35 hours per week) in my spare time.<\/a><\/p>\n

This section is intended to provide some help in picking and choosing from the huge number of events by sharing with you what I will\/might or would do. This is not a “best of…” list and if an event is not listed here, it by no means implies that the event is not interesting. Instead my “picks” are just based on my personal preferences. This is an odd weekend! In the middle of the year, it is summer and many people have time because the kids are on holidays, but there is no big event happening. No festival, no special gigs.<\/a><\/p>\n

BUT, if you are prepared to make it a little further south to Marlay Park and if you like some of the movies they screen, you can come to a cool free cinema screening in a park. Not too bad!<\/a><\/p>\n

And then there is the great Sunday Fusion Market on again. I like that monthly market. It is inside in the Food Co-op, but it is a nice atmosphere.<\/a><\/p>\n

The Sand Sculptures Exhibition continues and there are more Shakespeare in the Garden performances, so you will find something to do, I am sure. :-)<\/a><\/p>\n

And if not, just go for a walk or take a Dublin Bike for a ride.<\/a><\/div>\n

8mio to restore Mountjoy Square<\/h2>\n
\n

Dublin City plans to return Mountjoy Square to its original Georgian glory – for a whopping 8mio.<\/a><\/p>\n

Currently the park is home of a creche, some sports courts, a community centre and a parks works depot. All these facilities will be relocated, which is a good decision. At least the sports grounds are used quite a lot and hopefully they can stay nearby (I don’t know much about the other facilities, but assume they are also intensively used.) So half the money is for the relocation, but more than 4.5mio for restoring the park sounds quite high.<\/a><\/p>\n

Nevertheless, it will be great to have a park as nice as Merrion Square at Mountjoy Square. Work is due to begin in the coming months.<\/a><\/p>\n

New Facebook Messenger? – No thanks!!<\/h2>\n
\n

Facebook announced it long time ago that they will separate the Messenger App from the main Facebook app and in the last few days the forced switch over has started, which means that Facebook tells you that to use their messaging system you have to download the Messenger app now and can’t continue using the Facebook app anymore for it.<\/a><\/p>\n

First problem is that this needs another app and many phones are already creaking under the load of the currently installed apps. But the problem gets so much bigger when you read the app permissions the new Messenger demands. The Huffington Post posted an article that everyone should read who considers installing the Facebook Messenger. The article is here<\/a>.<\/p>\n

Some think the Facebook Messenger app is not demanding more permissions than other similar apps, like Skype or Whatsapp and that might even be correct. (see here<\/a>.) But the discussion about the Messenger app does raise awareness to the over-the-top permissions some apps demand and to what we are prepared to accept.<\/p>\n

I will definitely not rush to install the Facebook Messenger app and my problem is more the memory space (both RAM and ROM) and speed\/responsiveness of my phone. I was perfectly happy with the Facebook Messegner functionality in the Facebook app and I won’t install another Facebook application. Dale Chihuly’s vibrant coloured glass installations and opulent Chandeliers hang in many of the world’s most prestigious museums and public spaces including the Victoria and Albert museum, the Metropolitan Museum of Art, and the Louvre in Paris.<\/a><\/p>\n

A world premier of “Ulysses Cylinders” inspired by James Joyces’s Ulysses will come to the Coach House of Dublin Castle. This collaborative exhibition combines the alchemic artistry of Dale Chihuly with painter Seaver Leslie’s pen and ink drawings to create a unique collection of golden glass Cylinders.<\/a><\/p>\n

Working with Leslie’s drawings on paper, artists Mace and Kirkpatrick constructed fragile glass drawings, which Chihuly’s team studio amalgamated into individual Cylinders of glass wrapped in gold leaf. Each drawing offers a visual trigger into selected narratives of Ulysses as recounted by Joyce.<\/a><\/p>\n

Zines are most commonly described using some or all of the following words: non-commercial, non-professional, small-circulation magazines whose creators also manage their production, publishing and distribution themselves. They are often treated as ephemera by readers and authors alike, and their chances of surviving long past their creation date are slim as a result. Initially created in 2004 out of the personal collections of just four Irish artists,<\/a><\/p>\n

The Forgotten Zine Archive now exists as a curated collection of over two thousand zines donated by collectors and creators from all over the world. Its purpose is to protect its zines while also making them available as a resource to the wider public. Its items range in date from 1976 to 2014, and in topic from anarcho-feminism to science fiction to bus drivers.<\/a><\/p>\n

Citizens Wallpaper – Film & Photography Exhibition<\/h2>\n

Participants in the Citizens Wallpaper project produce visual sections of a wallpaper that reflect their view of their world by highlighting topics which interest and define them. The Citizens Wallpaper reflects serious contemporary issues such as ecology, politics, identity and memory. It explores modern cultural connections by sharing extracts from personal stories, giving a powerful voice to communal experiences.<\/a><\/p>\n

A Citizens Wallpaper exhibition is on show in the Fumbally Exchange Gallery and it comes in form of a film and photography exhibition. The themes covered are described here: http:\/\/www.citizenswallpaper.com\/?p=128<\/a> The images and films are based on themes around citizenship and identity and the exhibition is a view on new society at home and other parts of Europe.<\/p>\n

The organisation behind the exhibition is “Associated Photojournalists for Art & Culture” lead by international photojournalist Martin Nangle.<\/a><\/p>\n

This is the fifth year for “Yoga in the Park”, a brilliant initiative for a very worthy cause: From May until September, Tine from http:\/\/www.aditiyoga.org\/<\/a> and her team of teachers invite to an hour of Yoga in Phoenix Park every Saturday. No booking is required. <\/p>\n

The class is donation based, but all proceeds go to the Dublin Simon Community, a charity that does invaluable work for the homeless people in Dublin and the suggested donation for this very good cause is EUR 5.<\/a><\/p>\n

Just bring a mat or a towel, some water and (hopefully) even some sun protection to the class. Should the weather be bad, the bandstand will be shelter or even training location. The training is suitable for all levels, so even total beginners are very welcome.<\/a><\/div>\n

The Science Gallery Summer Exhibition “Strange Weather: Forecasts from te Future” has opened on 18 July and will run until 05 October.<\/a><\/p>\n

The exhibition explores how we understand, adapt to and control the changing weather and shows also a lot educational and even quirky bits around weather: A Raindrop hovering in mid-air, a Tornado Diverter, a Cloud Collector, Weather Models, a machine making house shaped clouds and an archive of old events from around the world that were (or are) impacted by weather and of new events emerging because of weather.<\/a><\/p>\n

There are 26 exhibits and – like all Science Gallery exhibitions -, it is a really interesting exhibition. Well worth a visit with the whole family.<\/a><\/p>\n

You can even be a TV weather man\/woman in a professional studio set-up! An interesting experience!

The fantastic Fortune Fool’s Productions who brought free Shakespeare plays to Ranelagh and Iveagh Gardens are back and will perform “Much Ado About Nothing in Iveagh Gardens from 07-17 August.<\/a><\/p>\n

The performances take place at 19:00 on 07, 08, 12, 13, 14, 15 August and at 15:00 on 09, 10, 16, 17 August. (No show on 11 August). Doors will open 30 minutes before the show.<\/a><\/p>\n

Admission is free (donations are welcome) and no tickets are required. Entry to Iveagh Gardens is through the entrance at Clonmel Street, which is off Harcourt Street. Dress weather-appropriately and bring a blanket or even a chair to sit on<\/a><\/p>\n

The Science Gallery Summer Exhibition “Strange Weather: Forecasts from te Future” has opened on 18 July and will run until 05 October.<\/a><\/p>\n

The exhibition explores how we understand, adapt to and control the changing weather and shows also a lot educational and even quirky bits around weather: A Raindrop hovering in mid-air, a Tornado Diverter, a Cloud Collector, Weather Models, a machine making house shaped clouds and an archive of old events from around the world that were (or are) impacted by weather and of new events emerging because of weather.<\/a><\/p>\n

There are 26 exhibits and – like all Science Gallery exhibitions -, it is a really interesting exhibition. Well worth a visit with the whole family.<\/a><\/p>\n

You can even be a TV weather man\/woman in a professional studio set-up! An interesting experience!

The “Dublin Sketchers” is an informal group of (hobby) artists who go somewhere different in Dublin every Sunday (e.g. National Museum, Maritime Museum, Dublin Flea Market, Farmleigh, Botanic Gardens, Dublin Castle, Science Gallery, …), sketch for one to two hours and then meet up for coffee afterwards and discuss their sketches.<\/a><\/p>\n

There are some hugely talented people among them and it is a great idea to meet up with others who have the same hobby. The fantastic Fortune Fool’s Productions who brought free Shakespeare plays to Ranelagh and Iveagh Gardens are back and will perform “Much Ado About Nothing in Iveagh Gardens from 07-17 August.<\/a><\/p>\n

The performances take place at 19:00 on 07, 08, 12, 13, 14, 15 August and at 15:00 on 09, 10, 16, 17 August. (No show on 11 August). Doors will open 30 minutes before the show.<\/a><\/p>\n

Admission is free (donations are welcome) and no tickets are required. Entry to Iveagh Gardens is through the entrance at Clonmel Street, which is off Harcourt Street. Dress weather-appropriately and bring a blanket or even a chair to sit on<\/a><\/p>\n

I have been at all previous Shakespeare performances by Fortune’s Fool Productions and in previous year, the “Dublin Event Guide (for Free Events)” also helped as a media partner and I am a big fan of their performances. The display of massive Sand Sculptures in the Upper Courtyard is back for the 15th year. This year the theme is “Black, White & Grey”. The live carving took place from 22-29 July and the finished sculptures will now be on display until 21 August.<\/a><\/p>\n

At the meeting Kirsten Doherty, Jonivar Skullerud and Will Andrews will give a talk on their experiences at Velo-City Adelaide 2014, the largest international cycling planning conference with over 1000 attendees. All three are members of Dublin Cycling Campaign and they gave presentations at Velo-City on topics ranging from \u2018Barriers and incentives to cycling among staff in an Irish academic hospital\u2019, to \u201cCycling in Ireland 2005-2015\u201d, to a comparison of policies in Ireland and New Zealand. They will give an overview of their own presentations and what they learnt about best practices for creating and sustaining cycling-friendly cities.<\/a><\/p>\n

The fantastic Fortune Fool’s Productions who brought free Shakespeare plays to Ranelagh and Iveagh Gardens are back and will perform “Much Ado About Nothing in Iveagh Gardens from 07-17 August.<\/a><\/p>\n

The performances take place at 19:00 on 07, 08, 12, 13, 14, 15 August and at 15:00 on 09, 10, 16, 17 August. (No show on 11 August). Doors will open 30 minutes before the show.<\/a><\/p>\n

Admission is free (donations are welcome) and no tickets are required. Entry to Iveagh Gardens is through the entrance at Clonmel Street, which is off Harcourt Street. Dress weather-appropriately and bring a blanket or even a chair to sit on<\/a><\/p>\n

The display of massive Sand Sculptures in the Upper Courtyard is back for the 15th year. This year the theme is “Black, White & Grey”. The live carving took place from 22-29 July and the finished sculptures will now be on display until 21 August.<\/a><\/p>\n

Supported by the OPW, the Sand Sculptures are created by Duthain Dealbh (meaning: Fleeting Sculpture) (http:\/\/www.duthain-dealbh.com\/)<\/a><\/p>\n

The fantastic Fortune Fool’s Productions who brought free Shakespeare plays to Ranelagh and Iveagh Gardens are back and will perform “Much Ado About Nothing in Iveagh Gardens from 07-17 August.<\/a><\/p>\n

The performances take place at 19:00 on 07, 08, 12, 13, 14, 15 August and at 15:00 on 09, 10, 16, 17 August. (No show on 11 August). Doors will open 30 minutes before the show.<\/a><\/p>\n

Admission is free (donations are welcome) and no tickets are required. Entry to Iveagh Gardens is through the entrance at Clonmel Street, which is off Harcourt Street. Dress weather-appropriately and bring a blanket or even a chair to sit on<\/a><\/p>\n

I have been at all previous Shakespeare performances by Fortune’s Fool Productions and in previous year, the “Dublin Event Guide (for Free Events)” also helped as a media partner and I am a big fan of their performances. After a successful first year, the Temple Bar Night Market is back this year and thist time there will not just be a few sporadic events, but it will take place every Thursday from 05 June until 28 August.<\/a><\/p>\n

It is an Arts & Craft Market (and not more – see below!) that will will feature the work of artists & craft makers and street entertainment from music to painting & from dance to workshops.<\/a><\/p>\n

Last year many people criticised that they missed food stalls at the market and I expect that this won’t change: The market is organised by the Temple Bar Company, an association of the traders in Temple Bar, so it is not in their interest to have competing traders at this market. The fantastic Fortune Fool’s Productions who brought free Shakespeare plays to Ranelagh and Iveagh Gardens are back and will perform “Much Ado About Nothing in Iveagh Gardens from 07-17 August.<\/a><\/p>\n

The performances take place at 19:00 on 07, 08, 12, 13, 14, 15 August and at 15:00 on 09, 10, 16, 17 August. (No show on 11 August). Doors will open 30 minutes before the show.<\/a><\/p>\n

Admission is free (donations are welcome) and no tickets are required. Entry to Iveagh Gardens is through the entrance at Clonmel Street, which is off Harcourt Street. Dress weather-appropriately and bring a blanket or even a chair to sit on<\/a><\/p>\n

N-plates for Novice drivers since 01 August! “N” for nonsense?
<\/strong><\/p>\n

I haven’t seen any on the streets of Dublin yet, but you might have heard that novice drivers, i.e. drivers in the first two years after they got their full license, now need to have an N-Plate attached to their car. If they don’t they can be fined with up to EUR 1000 and with 2 or even 4 penalty points. The Road Safety Authority claims<\/a> that “these changes are important road safety measures”.<\/p>\n

In my opinion this new plate is total nonsense and the penalties are outrageously high. If you drive in the wrong direction on a motorway, you will get 2 or 4 points, so not having a plastic sign on your windscreen is as bad as driving in the wrong direction on a motorway?<\/a><\/p>\n

And you can imagine what will come next!? If they are consequent, they will have to introduce a O-Sign for old people! And then, we should have a B-sign for mothers with “Babies on Board” and a S-Sign for people in stressful jobs. A T-sign for guys with too much Testosterone and maybe a P-sign for women during that precarious phase of the month? A H-sign for people with Heart conditions and an A-sign for people that ever were addicted to any illegal substances or to alcohol. And what about a sign for when you are tired or after a bereavement? Or after a fight with your spouse?<\/a><\/p>\n

All conditions that influence your driving!!<\/a><\/p>\n

No, the right thing would be to get rid of ALL plates, including the L-Plate! What? The L-Plate too? Yes, absolutely. Get rid of the L-Plate and with that remove all drivers that have not passed their test yet immediately from the roads. If changes are needed that are “important road safety measures”, then surely it has to be a change to the stupid system that allows people to drive home from their failed driving test or that allows them to drive at all without having been tested.<\/a><\/p>\n

By the way, I agree that a novice driver is not yet experienced enough and therefore some limitations could be in place (specific speed limits, for example), but I am driving in Dublin long enough to know that age or years of driving often has often no positive impact on driving skills.<\/a><\/p>\n
